Fernando Torres is an early doubt for Chelsea’s weekend trip to Stoke after reportedly suffering concussion whilst playing for Spain this evening.

The striker lined up for the Spanish against Italy in tonight’s friendly but lasted just 14 minutes before being forced off with a head injury.

Medical staff are expected to examine Torres before offering a further assessment. Already they are insisting that his withdrawal was purely a precaution.

However, if Torres has suffered concussion, he would seem likely to be forced to sit out of the trip to Britannia.

There are already doubts over Andre Villas-Boas’ team selection for Sunday’s game with Torres unable to take his opportunity to impress in the pre-season. Didier Drogba’s physical presence against Tony Pulis’ muscular outfit may well have been preferred regardless of the availability of the £50 million Spaniard.

Drogba was also in action tonight, scoring his 50th international goal via a penalty in Ivory Coast’s 4-3 victory against Israel in Geneva.

Torres is currently owned by over 88,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – Drogba currently claims almost double that figure.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Watch, we'll each be at 250000 after GW1 while some 4.5 Norwich 4.5 mid scores twice. It's a long season.

My latest (and possibly final) side

    Given (Al Habsi)
    Kompany, Baines, Hughes (Bardsley, Simpson)
    Silva, Sinclair, Taraabt, N'Zogbia (Moses)
    Rooney (c), Zamora, Rodallega

2.5 in the bank to upgrade Zamora to Suarez.

    Thoughts? Criticisms? Abuse?

Why do the BBC allow emotional wrecks on "debates"- in fact it's probably too soon to be trying to fully debate the riots anyway....

Post from a Wolves fan on our forums, it is absolutely laughable, they are all so deluded, one dingle said he would only take one player from our team, Mulumbu, is that why we finished 11th? Anyway look at this post, especially at the bottom, it is cringeworthy.....

    Foster or Hennessey? Foster
    Shorey or Elokobi? Elokobi
    Tamas or Johnson? Johnson
    Olssen or Stearman? Olssen
Reid or Foley / Zubar? Foley / Zubar
    Thomas or Jarvis? Jarvis
    Dorrans or O'Hara? O'Hara
    Mulumbu or Henry? Mulumbu
    Brunt or Hunt? Hunt
    Long or Doyle? Doyle
Odemwingie or SEB? Not sure, it's close.

Loads of people are whacking Drogs in their team from day 1 cos Torres has had a knock. When I look at the fixture list every season though, Stoke away is always a fixture where i say oh.... they're tight as a ducks arse at home.

When Chelsea went there last season it was 1-1. Drogba scored it. The year before, Chelsea won 2-1. Drogba and Malouda scored. Chelsea beat them 2-0 in 07-8, but Drogba didn't score.

So in 3 home games in the league, Stoke have conceded 5 goals to Chelsea, 2 of which were scored by Drogba.

Why the big discrepancy in clean sheets for Man City defenders last season? Just want to make sure Kompany is the best choice.

    Kompany 18
    Zabaleta 12 (2 goals)
    Lescot 10 (3 goals)

I recall some rotation, personally I suffered when Toure was playing defense and got subbed out at 58 min on a few clean sheets. Also, when will he be back and at what price?

    Thanks All

Holt's statistics are impressive and he's on spot-kicks.

The only other I'd consider around that price is Graham (5.0), Campbell (5.5) and Ba (6.0).

Stephen Fletcher is an extra 1.0, so there is quite a big price gap there. Even so, I'd still go with Holt since he is on both penalties and set pieces, where as Fletcher is not.

Fulham are managed by Jol now who is known for his attacking football which if he plays will leave them more open at the back. I'm not saying theyvell keep no clean sheets but I do expect less than what Villa will keep under a manager known who's style is the total opposite to Jol.

Ok now we at the quiet time of night when all the sensible discussioons happen , id like to to throw open a discussion on the cheap defenders if anyone interested.

Thinking of starting with five cheapies, not as a season long strategy but as a starting one. Logic is that defences at start of season are a lottery , and the cheapies can do just as well as the expensive players. There also no risk of them dropping in price so can concentrate transfers on the mids and attackers.

Playing three at back each week which helps.

So far i have picked out simpson Orr and Alcaraz , am looking for a couple more 4-4.5 defenders , any ideas?

I immediately thought Givet was a deal when I saw him, if you're interested. Bramble/Brown seems like an absolute must with this strategy.

I wish I had the balls to do it myself. It was my gut instinct when I first saw the ridiculous prices. I bet your forward 8 is marvelous.

I think Bramble is nailed on, I remember reading an interview with Steve Bruce a week or two ago talking about his importance. Plus he had him at Wigan and brought him to Sunderland too.
I can't remember where I saw the article though! I'll have a root around.

De Laet (4m) for Norwich isn't a bad shout and maybe Brown (4.5m) for Sunderland?
A risky strategy but i see the logic in your thinking, for the start of the season at least.

"Logic is that defences at start of season are a lottery"...nonsense...Cole will start for Chelsea and they've got decent fixtures...there are other good players too...so what's the problem?

"There also no risk of them dropping in price"...rubbish...the only player who can't drop in price is the one that you own and nobody else at all has him...he will only drop £0.1m after you sell him

the problem starting with 5 cheapies is that it's a bit of a lottery...they won't rotate well if you get an injury or two so you'll end up with Simpson at Old Trafford sort of thing

if you want 5 cheapies get 3 at the back and 2 elsewhere...most likely they'll rotate better

if you go for this strategy you won't be alone...some good players will do it

if chelsea and man city concede you'll be happy...but if Chelsea and Man City get cleanies you'll be in a world of pain compared to your competitors...your competitors are the people on this site who'll finish the season at the business end of the table

I considered this, but I don't see as much value in the 4.5 defenders this year.

Also, with the money saved, where are you going to use it effectively?

If you were going to go for it, and I commend you if you do, I'd recommend:

      Orr, Taylor, Bramble, Hughes, Simpson

Two sets of perfect rotations in Orr, Taylor and Bramble, Simpson, then you can play Hughes or another solid 5.0 every week.

his attacking potential is what warrants his price, but for 8 i'd want a bit more of a clean sheet option, just easier to get cole for the .5 less

i want baines but not at that cost + im still bitter over a season or 2 ago where i had him for like 5, i refuse to pay almost double!

I don't like mandatory transfers. If I'm going to get Malouda GW 2, I might as well start with him.

I've changed my team around lately. It's nicely balanced now, and it's not particularly risky. Plenty of room for change which I feel will be important.

ok but i could start and keep nani or malouda or both...basically you can get players very similar to your big guys if you accept N'Zog for one of your trio and dirt-cheap cheapos...the pay-off is Baines who should be way better than Bramble...possibly by 100 points

speaking for myself i'd definitely do this if it wasn't for the tougher everton fixtures from gw6

              I don't like Baines.

Think he's overpriced now. Last season was a one-off. He still plays left back, and for an Everton side who haven't strengthened much in the off-season.

I don't think you can say last season was a one-off... maybe he got lucky with getting a few penalties to smash in, but the season before he still got 9 assists, and scored 138 points.

He may be left-back, but he's still one of Everton's most attacking players (if not THE most)

    My final team:

    Cech (Moreira)
    Hughes Baines Kompany (Orr, Simpson)
    Moses Nani N'Zogbia Taraabt Silva
    Rooney Zamora (Beattie)

Pretty happy with it overall, Baines is the big swing in the balance do you think i should downgrade him to a 5m or 4.5m defender and upgrade Zamora to Bent or Drogba?

I give alot of credit to pen takers- Baines is your expensive defender, everyone should have one. So go for it. Plenty of dissent though with slow start, too expensive, wait for team value to rise so you can afford him. You've heard it all before.

You could go for another 4.0 def for Hughes and upgrade Zamora or Beattie.(who I don't know)

I'm not very keen on any of the top midfielders to begin with. Nani doesn't have great fixtures and will get rotated, I personally don't think Malouda will have a good season under AVB and Lampard could be playing in a deeper role.

It will work, Van Persie, Drogba & Bent will all play 100% and the latter two have excellent opening fixtures.

RVP may not play but I'm sure you know that. Nani will definitely start GW1 against West Brom and Malouda's a big hitter for a team with great fixtures. N'Zogbia's a steal at 7.5 I reckon and Downing looks set to knock-up some assists in a strong Liverpool side.

It's not just the mid-field that's suffered from such a strong front three; Cole is the only one I can see getting enough clean sheets to be worth it.

Sessegnon, Taarabt and Sinclair have never proven themselves as fantasy gold thought I don't doubt they could be, but when it comes to picking your first team before the season's started I'd suggest having at least one other safe-betalong with Silva.

Of course you could be on to a winner but it's a risk.

I don't fancy Nani to do much against us and don't just want a player for GW1 anyway, he will get rotated at some point in the first 3 ganmes.

I don't really could N'Zogbia as a big, expensive mid but yeah I agree, he is class but he's at a new team where he probably won't be the main man. I don't think he will have as big impact at Villa as he did at Wigan.

Whoever you get it will be hard to get consistent clean sheets, as proved last season, so many goals in the English leagues these days.

I don't see my team as a risk, the top three are very safe picks. I see where you are coming from in regards to the tactics maybe, but I just fancy the top strikers to do better than the top midfielders in the first 3 weeks with fixtures and certainty over their starts so that is basically the reason I'm looking at those front three.

how the hell is drogba a safe pick? we dont know if hes starting and even if he is you know torres will be coming in the 60th min at least for him, so hes not going to be getting 90!

Well Nani's been looking good pre-season and a player of that quality to be guaranteed a start by SAF is always worth looking at.

I agree with your point about N'Zogbia though at that particular price range there's no-one better.

Consistent clean sheets are always hard but you can guarantee the likes of Chelsea and Man City will get many more than say the new-comers or Wolves etc.

Like I said, you could easily do well with that team but naturally I like to pick safe, balanced teams and I think that's of more importance at the beginning of a season. What's more, if one of those players gets injured (RVP springs to mind) you could be in trouble.

      I like most of it.

A few too many risks in there. Midfield could be gold or a disaster, but at least one or two of those 4 risks will disappoint.

Strikeforce is a risk too with Drogba sitting there.

Obertan -- does anything think as a winger at Newcastle, he could be the best 5.0 (or even better than the 5.5 mids available) in the game. He was very sharp in preseason. I haven't made any decision concerning him yet.

too many options in midfield - with the new guys coming in barton might get moved wide and ben arfa is still to come back -- id wait and see

+1 That midfield is very hard to predict given how many players have come in this summer. Plus there's always the risk that The Toon can self-destruct at any moment.

Jack Frost, here is Gabriel Obertan's premier league record: 14 games, 4 starts, 0 goals, 0 assists, 4 shots on target, 7 off target. Maybe he'll come good with regular starts, but there are better options at this stage.

What are people's thoughts on Dempsey and Benayoun?

I like Dempsey's fixtures and figure he'll be one of the main goal threats again this season, even if Jol plays two up top. Thoughts?

Also Benayoun seems to have had a very good preseason and AVB seems to like having a technical player 'between the lines' when he plays.

Scratch that, I think I'd prefer Zamora.

      Benayoun Q still stands though!
