The first major team news going into the weekend comes from the Arsenal camp with Arsene Wenger confirming that Robin Van Persie should be amongst a string of players available for Saturday’s trip to Newcastle.

The Dutchman was a slight doubt going into the weekend having suffered a knock in the first half of the friendly with Benfica. Wenger has however offered us reassurance that the striker should figure at St James’ Park…

“From the players who played in the last game, everyone should be available.”

There’s more positive news on both Thomas Vermaelen, who was nursing a back complaint and Theo Walcott who has returned to training ahead of schedule following an ankle problem. Kieran Gibbs is also thought to be available and will likely claim the left-back berth.

With Aaron Ramsey and Andrei Arshavin both also given a clean bill of health, Arsenal’s resources look plentiful enough even without both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri who remain unlikely to figure. The Gunners will also be without both Jack Wilshere and Abou Diaby in midfield.

Van Persie’s availability could now cause a shuffle within our Fantasy squads. Despite a testing opening three Gameweeks, Arsenal appear to have a run of fixtures during the first-half of the season which should hand the Dutchtman opportunity to flourish. The recent squad upheaval and the continuing doubts over Van Persie’s durability will be a concern but, even so, the Dutchman is currently owned by over 140,000 Fantasy Premier League managers – a figure which could be set to rise as the day progresses.

This early team news from the Emirates has been collated in our Team News section – keep popping back there for all the updates as today unfolds.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Bench this week - O'Hara or Hoolahan? O'Hara the proven, reliable one but Hoolahan plays for a promoted side away to Wigan on the opening day, and we all know what can happen there.

Okay, I messed up a comment up there by someone using italics haha!
I think I'm set on my team now, only thing shakey is the defence.
    Robinson/Hughes/Gabbidon/Enrique/Kompany.

I have 0.5 in the bank and will have 1 when I go from Carroll to Suarez so was going to update Robinson to Cahill. I know Bolton don’t have the best start but I’ve looked and Bolton/QPR/Fulham seem to rotate pretty well!

    Rooney vs Van Persie?
This is the only thing I can't decide now.

    • Rooney seems to be fully fit.
    • Van Persie, has been passed fit but that doesn't really give me great confidence.

    • Van Persie was a goal machine last season once he returned to fitness.
    • Rooney had a bit of slump, although did well with assists.

    • Rooney's fixtures: West Brom (A), Tottenham (H), Arsenal (H), Bolton (A), Chelsea (H), Stoke (A).
    • Van Persie's fixtures: Newcastle (A), Liverpool (H), Man Utd (A), Swansea (H), Blackburn (A), Bolton (H).

Overall, I prefer Van Persie's opening 6 fixtures, but perhaps Rooney's first 3 are slightly better.

    Who would YOU pick?

Tha's a very good point. I have currently got Rooney in my team anyway, but I suppose the wise thing to do would be wait and see how Van Persie is doing after the first 3 gamesweeks and then consider bringing him in for Rooney.

RVP because there are other United options who could score big whereas if Arsenal do well RVP is almost certainly going to be involved.

I still haven't been convinced that Rooney's new position will make him an assist and goal-scoring machine. Which you would expect not less of a player worth 12 mil.

Rooney is extremely important to us, but not in the same way he was 2 season ago.

I have had Rooney since day one. RVP injury concern was enough to put me off him but knowing he will now start has caused me to re-think over the two.
But I agree. No matter who I pick in the end, the other one will come out good. Sods law.

Its the age old question Rooney or RVP. In Man Utd's attack there are Rooney, young and Nani as stand outs. I can't see Valencia playing for a couple more games. Nani is the slight rotation risk, but more likely to do something special. Young is the steady eddy assist machine. Rooney will get points

Arsenal have reasonably tough ffixtures, or which Newcastle away is not one. they will attack and only have one major goal threat in RVP. If they score it will be through him somehow. In Man UTd score it may or may not involve a rooney goal or assist.

RVP wins for me with Nani or Young as my man utd cover.

I just don't know. He's never kicked a prem ball before so no evidence to say either way. I'll wait and see. Fixtures get better from gwk4 so may consider him then. No time for risks for me at this stage. That money can be much better spent on proven performers.

I'm planning on bringing in a United player a few weeks down the line. I'm not overly keen on any of their players from a fantasy perspective - Rooney not prolific enough to justify 12M, midfield subject to rotation and my strategy involves a cheap defence so I can't really get any of their back line in.

I'll probably bring in Young, Valencia or Nani in a few weeks depending on how early games go.

I too am going for a planned transfer in gw2...its a risky move...may be better to give yourself some wiggle room though with some choices of transfer. Another of your stars may get injured and need transferring...that's going to leave you perhaps with Dzeko for a couple more weeks.

It could work out for you, but I think you add a slight risk.

I'd personally prefer Silva or Yaya - both players I'd be happy to keep for a while in case trannies are needed elsewhere. Why not just get Bent in anyway?

I'd steer clear of 4.5s personally unless you can happily play all your other mids/forwards every week. 6.0s would be much more balanced and I like the two you suggested, or even a 6.5 and a 5.5.

Not that it helps but I doubt Tiote would get many points this season as I think the Toon will struggle and seems to atract Yellow Cards so I would stay clear.

        Defenders are ok.

Would steer clear of Tiote - no good in FPL terms. Good player, but he'll only get 2 points a game, and quite often 1 point with the amount of cards he gets.

I'd go for Nathan Dyer for 4.5, or find another .5m and get on the Moses-mobile.

Midfield looks a bit weak, Taarbat and Moses get a lot of hype on here but not proven yet
