The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Thoughts on this team please.

    Given (Vorm)
A.Cole, Kompany, Hughes (De Laet, Simpson)
    Malouda, Silva, Sinclair, Moses (Brunt)
    Rooney(V), Bent(C), Holt

I have a VERY similar squad. I have Ruddy instead of Vorm, Ferguson instead of Brunt, Suarez instead of Rooney and Zamora instead of Holt. Ya reckon Bent will put up a solid performance v. Blackburn? I didn't watch the Villa game and didn't see how he did. I was thinking the same, but was debating Zamora also as a sleeper pick. Thoughts?

Ruddy got same points as Vorm. Norwich kept more clean sheets in their preseason. Ruddy rotates better with Given, the most popular choice for 1st GK. I'm sticking with Ruddy.

Vorm played a lot better though. I was tossing up between Vorm and De Laet or Ruddy and Taylor but I think both of the former look the better option, based on gw1 at least.

11.0 for Torres, who is still not in form, no set piece or pk duty and at risk of rotation with one solid performance from Drogba putting his time in doubt, imo a waste of money. even with the fixtures.

I think the best investment in Chelsea right now is in their defense!

We all know he is a good striker, he showed good signs on the weekend and is hitting the age (27?) were strikers are at there best.

He will be first choice now, Drogba is still good but getting old.

Yes, the defence looks weak but most important is that they will play and if you look at the history the difference of getting in a star name points wise in defence is outweighed by the attacking threat of the others. VP is always gold, a captain choice and can rotate with Rooney.

Is RVP a stick or sell? If I keep him I won't get Baines into my team and my mid would be a bit weaker too. Ah, tough because RVP is class but just worried about the rest of the Arsenal team at the moment. Slotting in Aguero means I won't be keeping RVP without weakrning the team.

RVP is an interesting one - picked him GW1 and would still have him but for the bonus wildcard this week. Obviously the midfield behind him is somewhat unsettled and this prompted my thoughts to take him out.
On the other side of the coin, Arsenal at home, they play attacking football and RVP is their best attacker. Now I'm doubting my decision to take hime out.

He'll still be in charge of rampaging down the left and whipping deadly-accurate balls into the box, that's for sure.

I'm actually not 100% convinced that Arteta would just come straight into the team and take over spot-kicks anyway. I may be wrong on this, but I see he actually missed one in the league last season, whereas Baines has a pretty good record. Would seem harsh for Moyes to take him off them.

after the emergence of Torres and Aguero, have been tinkering with my team for quite a bit. but decided to stick back to my original for now.

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Acole, Brown, Simpson, Hall
    Malouda, Silva, Sessegnon, Moses, Dyer
    Carroll, Rooney, Holt

    1.5 in bank.

how's the look of this team? any suggestion?
Brown rotates well with the other 2 4.0 defenders. thinking of getting Malouda as Chelsea cover, he normally does well against weaker opponents. with his price, he can be a straight swap to anyone.

was deciding between Sess and larsson and thought goals are more important. Moses and Dyer will just rotate.

i also think that Carroll will do well against Arsenal. and with the money in bank, i can easily get Aguero/RVP if anyone fires up. not too keen on Aguero at the moment cos of fixtures and fitness.

    thoughts?

    Ok guys, what about this:

    Given Vorm
    Brown Rangel Kompany Senderos Simpson
    Nani Toure Sinclair Hoolahan Neville
    Rooney Torres Suarez

That's six players with two consecutive home games. I'll be very interested to see how Swansea and Norwich get on at home. No N'Zogbia, despite the good fixtures - I don't know what to make of Villa yet.

    Latest team to pull apart

    Given Vorm

    Brown Cole Kompany (Ebrique simpson)
    Lampard Sesegron Silva Moses Obertan
    Suarez Bent Holt

    Defence i think is fine

Midfield bought in fat frnk not because i like him but because he certain starter unlike malouda or torres , who i dont trust anyway

Eventually will get aguero but that can wait and have silva to cover city
Think liverpool will go well against a weakened arsenal

Team is just for next couple of weeks when lampard will go and will bring in some man u and man c

Lampard's the safest choice I suppose but why not take a gamble on Torres? West Brom and Norwich aren't the most defensively robust sides and if he can't score against them who will he score against?

Fair enough, I suppose. I had Lamps at the back end of last season and although he scored a few points he just upset the balance of the team. Torres and Sinclair appeal to me more than Lamps and Holt but then they are more of a gamble.

This just convinced me to change my team to include Lampard.

Rooney out cos of terrible fixtures. Lampard in as he on pens and has good fixtures.

After 2 weeks, do a double transfer to RVP and Brunt.

      Perfect!

Mr. balance is back at it.

      Personally, I don't like it.

Lampard is too expensive and has no straight swap alternatives, Bent is also over priced.

More value in the likes of N'Zogbia, Malouda etc.

Defense is heavy, and you'll be benching Enrique many weeks at a time unless you plan to play him ahead of Obertan, in which case, you might as well downgrade him to Surman or Dyer.

      Can be streamlined more.

What do you mean by Lampard has "no straight swap alternatives"?

As the most expensive midfielder, you can do a straight swap for any other midfielder in the game?

My point is, why is a lack of "straight swap alternatives" a bad thing? Surely flexibility is a positive... if you have N'Zogbia, for example, and suddenly Malouda or Van der Vaart or Nani hits some serious form, you can't bring them in without making 2 trades. With Lampard you can get anyone who hits form.

It's not "downgrading" if you get in someone who is performing better.

I agree that both Lampard and Bent are probbly overpriced long term , however their fixtures mean that temporarily they are not overpriced.

Plan is no transfersnext week and then in a couple of weeks time bent will come out for Aguelero or rooney or van persie and lampard will come out for VDV or some other likely candidate.
Or if bent doing really well will downgrade Lamps and change holt into Aguero.

So basically tthere plenty of flexibility.

Your flexibility is not in straight swaps though. For a person who doesn't like taking gambles, you're choosing players for short term gains over long term value. Can't see the logic there.

We have different playing styles. You like your team built one way, I like it built another way. We'll see whose strategy comes out on top at the end of the season.

It's got nothing to do with getting back at anyone, really 😉 All the best.

Camzy, you've not replied about what you mean by straight swaps... if you have Lampard you can get him out for anyone, that's the ultimate in flexibility. I don't quite see your point.

The answer is straight swaps. Lampard out means a downgrade. Money sitting in the bank when it could have been invested elsewhere.

              Here's an example.

              Lampard, N'Zogbia
              Nani, Silva

Say Van Der Vaart hits form all of a sudden. Lampard owners can do Lampard > VdV, but they'll have 2.0 in the bank wasted.

The second player can do a straight swap to Nani and have the added advantage (theoretically) of Silva over N'Zogbia and no wasted money.

I see what you mean... I just don't think that money is necessarily "wasted" by having it in the bank- you'll be using it the next week no doubt.

The real-life scenario is likely to be more complicated than you make out- as you acknowledge by saying "theoretically". Let's say VDV hits form, but N'Zogbia and Nani are also in form and have decent fixtures coming up. Player 1 can then get VDV and N'Zogbia, and have 2m in the bank for whatever trade you need to do the following week.

Player 2 has to decide between Nani and VDV, and whatever he chooses he won't have any cash for a trade next week, so he'll have to either do another straight swap or a downgrade.

Of course it's possible that Lampard will be in good form too, so you'll have to decide if it's worth swapping him or not, but at least if you do you've then got an extra 2m to spend on your next transfer.

I guess we just view "downgrading" differently: for me, if I make a trade that leaves me with a squad I'm happy with and money in the bank too, brilliant. The distribution of funds around your team will inevitably change over the course of a season anyway.
