The Digest – a new regular. The concept is simple – capture the Gameweek past under three headings, assessing the player, the team and the one event that has the Fantasy Football community stirring.

Gameweek One provided an easy introduction, although sadly, around the genius of one Argentinian and the artistry of a sparkling Monday night display, some of its events are best forgotton.

The Player

Sergio Aguero
Late to the party, Sergio Aguero transformed the Gameweek in thirty minutes by dismantling Swansea with two goals and a smart assist for David Silva’s third goal. Busy and bustling, Aguero’s impressive industry was surpassed by moments of brilliance, capped by a 20-yard drive that dipped and curled away from the grasp of Vorm – a keeper who had, for so long, repelled City’s best efforts.

Any doubts that Aguero would take time adjusting to Premier League life were extinguished – concerns that Mancini’s men would need more matches to gel with their new talisman quelled. The link up play with Silva, in particular, looks to have the potential to dismantle defences and Aguero clearly has the end product to convert the creative spark supplied by the Spaniard.

Fantasy Managers will have revised their plans of the back of the half-hour cameo. Suddenly Aguero is no longer a “wait and see” prospect – he’s firmly in our plans with heavy investment heading his way.

The Team

Man City
City’s slow ascent from a teasing tormentor to ultimate destroyers of Swansea’s plucky Premier League baptism sent a clear message to their title rivals. The firepower available to Roberto Mancini is clearly devastating, reinforced considerably by Aguero’s explosive introduction on the hour-mark.

Around the Argentinian, last season’s campaigners stepped up accordingly. David Silva conjured and cajoled in midfield, linking play, seeking the ball, dazzling the visitors forlorn attempts to shackle his influence. Yaya Toure was immense – by pushing his presence further up the pitch, Mancini turned the game, imprisoned Swansea in their own half and was able to sustain the pressure to such a degree, breaking point was inevitable. Even Edin Dzeko, rejuvenated by a pre-season and clean slate, toiled as the lone striker before providing the focal point for Aguero to buzz around with such effect. A 75-minute appearance for Adam Johnson, the usual smattering of step-overs this time accompanied by an end product as he provided the ammunition for Dzeko’s crucial opener.

Behind all finery, Vincent Kompany marshalled a defence which started the campaign with a clean sheet – the first of many for a defence which topped the rankings last term.

We shouldn’t be seduced too easily – Swansea’s resistance seemed to drain once Dzeko breached their defence; clearly Brendan Rodgers has a lot of work to do before his outfit can compete with such an effective foe. However, it’s apparent that City’s attacking talent bristles with Fantasy potential and with defensive resolve also on offer, the temptation to boost the City quota in our lineups is strong.

The Talking Point

Fantasy Premier League Woes
Much as we’d like to dwell on some sparkling on-field displays, the Fantasy Gameweek was dominated by the problems suffered by the Fantasy Premier League game. Demand on Friday evening created issues which ultimately saw the service disrupted with managers unable to log on to tweak their lineups and new managers denied the opportunity to sign-up. Despite toiling overnight and a brief window of normality from 5am onwards, big demand again on Saturday morning again threatened the service and Friday night’s issues returned.

Live points were disabled while the service looked to recover and it wasn’t until Sunday that the FPL began to edge back to near working order.

Yesterday came the apology for the issues – the FPL have taken the step to lift the cost on transfers leading up to this weekend’s deadline and emphasised the option or mini-league admins to scrap Gameweek One’s tallies. New monthly prizes were introduced; an extra incentive for Gameweek’s 2-4 thrown into the mix. Inevitably, the solution left some feeling aggrieved and there’s still concerns that the message has yet to reach those who play the game. There’s still confusion.

In truth, the FPL manager just wants stability. We want the game to get back on its feet, to make a recovery and to reinvigorate our Fantasy seasons. We’ve got everything crossed for Gameweek Two. We hope to be talking football in next week’s digest.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Anyoe care yo rate my new team? :p

      Given(Ruddy)
      Kompany,Cashley,Enrique(Taylor,Orr)
      Silva,Zogbia,Moses,Sinclair(Formica)
      Bent,Suarez,Torres

      Any changes I should do?
Will Aguero rise so much? Maybe loads of people buy him in before deadline and he will not rise so much after?

No United cover? Bold. Looks good though, quite balanced. GW4 will be hard though, need to check the fixtures and plan some changes.

Brunt's quality, he's been alternating between winger and attacking midfield, he's their captain and talisman now and he's on set pieces. Cheap as chips too.

Ivanovic will not play this week. Bosingwa was very attacking against Stoke so AVB will probably keep him in.

Brunt has tough fixtures ahead, but could be a good differential if you fancy him. Nani didn't really show up for the WBA game, but he is known to rip it up at OT, will be a toss up between him and Young for me, with Young leading it a bit for being on FKs for the time being.

RVP and Suarez have tough fixtures coming up, but if their team scores, they'll be involved.

I don't think we should make wild claims like "Ivanovic will not play this week"

Last week, everybody was saying Torres won't play because AVB would prefer Drogbas strength against Stokes defense

Try to keep a Chelski defender in at least, they have 2 easy home games (on paper at least) after which you can swap them out. Bosingwa looks likely to play those two, or at least one. Alex is almost a certainty as well, so either one of them will do, but Alex would be the safer choice with Bosingwa being the cheaper alternative.

            Old team:

            Given Ruddy

            Cole Kompany Senderos Enrique Simpson

            Nani Brunt Sessegnon Moses Taarabt

            Suarez Drogba Bent

            New Team:

            Given Ruddy

            Cole Brown Senderos Enrique Simpson

            Silva Brunt Sessegnon Moses Ramsey

            Suarez Aguero Torres

Taking Kompany out was a big decision but I figure I've got enough points in defense with those players rotating to warrant it.

I have .5 in the bank So that I can change Silva with VDV when the Spurs double game weeks comes around, or change for Nani/Young depending on fixtures.

Lack on Man UTD worries me but they're expensive boys lol.

Any Everton fans in the house? Can we get some info about your team/ form players? Really confused by pre-season - poor results, hardly any game time for the likes of Cahill, Arteta, Saha. Dont know what to make of it. Both Cahill and Saha are pretty big investments in terms of $ so need to be sure before picking them.

That said, some Everton attacking cover looks pretty essential for the next few weeks with fixtures and a DGW coming up at some point.

So prices are 'frozen'. What does this mean?

Is it like it were GW1, or like all players are 'protected'? If the latter we can expect Aguero, Cahill, Suarez et al to go up on Saturday night.

Where did Lampard play against Stoke? Is he looking like a decent option? I just have the feeling he is more nailed on than Torres

Lamps will still be getting forward and will be a goal threat, both are nailed on against West Brom imo.

yeah, went for that one myself too. If they stick with the same formation than hell be the best option, especially if drogs is out(hell get more free kicks too) And as of torres im not so convinced yet aswell and prefer Suarez/Bent to him.

I'm leaving Torres out of my team, only because if he doesn't score and I have him its double dissapointment, if I don't have him and he does score, who cares, he scored!

Cheers guys. The only problem I can envisage is that Mikel might not play, in which case perhaps Lamps will be further back?

I do see Torres being nailed on against West Brom but if he doesn't score and Drogba comes on and does then perhaps Drogba starts against Norwich, its a risk.

Thats the thing with Lampard, he can go half a game without doing anything, then he gets the ball in a good position and scores, or we get a pen. All this Lamps is sitting deeper is silly as the whole team is just tracking back more and working harder to get the ball under AVB.

You don't have to have Baines, but if you don't have Baines, in my eyes you have to have Cole. One of the other, they're both point scoring machines, Baines will may be get more bp but Cole will still get a lot and he'll get more clean sheets.

Boswinga will be sat on the bench when Ivanovic is fit, Enrique is better than Jags in FPL this season because he's at a better team, he's an attacking full back and he's cheaper. Your midfield bench is poor so if you have bad fixture weeks you'll struggle to rotate and Zamora would be better than Gyan.

Besides those things I can't see a problem.

              (just my opinion ;o))

If you ask me I think Ivan will rotate with Alex until Luiz is fit. Bosingwa should in theory get a decent run if you look at pre-season and GW1. He may not be 100% to start the entire season though. It's crazy but Bos had a similar if not more threatening game to Cole yet all the work he did meant he had more failed opportunities and is why I think Cole got BPs rather than him...It's a shame that the system creates misconceptions like that even though, in theory, it's accurate in terms of how they have set it up to score people for BPs. Oh well..

Sinclair wasn't great, you have 3 UTD attacking players and they have a horrible run of fixtures. Your defense doesn't contain a player from Chelsea or Man City and your keepers are weak.

2..nani risk rotation wise and is hot and cold

N zog or bent doesnt really matter all their attacks will go through both of them with Haskey being their other attacking mid (dont ask me why)

UTD's fixtures are terrible but I'd choose Nani Bent if I was to choose from those. I fancy Young to play more than Nani though.

We smashed you boys by more than 1 goal last year ;o) but I do get your point, especially strong at home I just think that having more than 1 UTD attacking player with the up and coming fixture list is risky.

Who's the better budget 4M Newcastle defender? Simpson or R. Taylor?

Danny Simpson is a safer pick. He should start 30+ games, but is unlikely to offer anything but the occasional clean sheet. R.Taylor offers some set piece potential (he does have to share them with Barton and Cabaye though), but he is only in the LB role temporarily until we sign a new left back. Which will hopefully be very soon.

Hey all, any thoughts on my team?

            Vorm (Ruddy)
Richards, Baines, Bosingwa (Da Laet, Taylor R)
            Hoolahan, Silva, Moses, Cahil(Barton)
            Johnson, Torres (c), Rooney (VC)

            1.0 in the bank

Captain choice will be a hard one. But overall I like how this team stacks up for the next 2 GWs. Anything I missed?

              I like it.

The Boswinga this is an issue but seeing as you've got Richards and Baines that's not too much of a prob. Johnson up top, hmmm I dunno but I like it in general.

Upgrade one of your keepers imo. Cahill Hoolahan i dont reallu like. Baines is enough everton coverage i think

Hmmm, I am taking a risk with the keepers, but I think that the will come good. Cahill is a preemptive strike, I expect him to rise and there a DGW somewhere along the lines for him. Hoolahan looks to be the creative outlet for NOR, if they score I think he will be involved, so BPs and assists in it for him, plus some goals. That's basically my reasoning for those players.

Thanks for the input though, might rethink the keepers.

Yeah...keepers will haunt you the entire season...I think Cahill is a good choice simply because he's really an OOP player if you think of how Everton usually set up...and he's amped to get going too...Just watch the Richards and Bos situation and I don't think R Taylor will stay in the team for long especially as Newcastle are looking for a LB now.

Nani for me, I think that he will do well against a TOT defense that hasn't played a Premier League game yet. Could get something from the game.

Since everyone else is doing a RMT, here's mine

            Given-Vorm

            Baines-Cole-Kompany-Brown-Simpson
            Silva-Sessegnon-Formica-Walters-Moses
            Aguero-A Johnson -Rooney

I already had the likes of Vorm and Formica, too bad they are in most teams now 🙂

Hmmm...I know bonus points are the flavour at the moment but don't forget that goals and assists are also point scoring options. That said, I worry that you have such an expensive defense that may or may not score goals or assist and a mid range midfield with the same problem. I would guess to have proper solid players who will stay forward is better than some who play in teams where they are more prone to not fire. Big guys still get goals even if their team struggles. I could be wrong but I'm not sure it's the correct option unless you're working on a plan to WC soon and want a team for the next few weeks. Aguero will be a bench player (just saying) until his first proper start so keep that in mind if you think it's a legit theory.
