Spot the Differential

As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

Warnock is more of an attacking fullback; check the prior season history for specifics; he should be good for a few goals (around 3 or so) and assists over the course of a year

Neither really, but if you had to choose one it'd probably be Warnock.

The way Mcleish has Villa set up, at least last week seem quite attacking on paper.

      Heskey, Bent, Agbonlahor
      Delph, Petrov, N'Zogbia

So he's playing 3 forwards and 2 very attack minded wide men in Delph & N'Somnia so i'd imagine this wouldlimit how much the full backs push forward. But yeah, Warnock.

guys, if you post a Q, could you try to leave two pieces of feedback per item you post? It takes no time really and worked out really well the other night with people actually getting answers and decent feedback. It always seems to be the same few actually feeding back on Q's.

Just a thought, call me fascist.

I wish there was a function to click GW3 and the fixtures under each players name would change to GW3 fixtures, so you could easily see how your team is set up as a whole each GW with 1 click!

put my team in a box for current gw, with a cropped screenshot of the ticker on the left, then to the right of my current team box, i have a couple of other boxes with my team for the following 2 gameweeks, then you just update it each week so can always look a couple ahead, plan a bit, put some notes in for later etc etc

I reckon Jarvis too tbh, Surman is a bigger goal threat, and Fulham will probably be harder to break down than Stoke away from home.

Yeah, I have gone for a pricey defence, but I think Baines and Cole are worth the price tag as they'll get goals. Cahill is a punt in midfield, but you've got to take risks if you wanna win it!

personally i wouldn't captain cahill, but it could be a good diff

      i chose sinclair over taarabt

i wouldn't have baines AND cole - pick one deluxe def if you want one

I'd agree you gotta choose with Baines or Cole. Sinclair over Taarabt is personal choice, nothing wrong with Taarabt! I like the gamble with Cahill as captain, something original!

btw I have these same 3 subs and was wondering what order is best to have them in?

    A. Hughes with Nathan Dyer as a sub + 0.5m in bank

    or

    B. Hughes with Ferguson as a sub with Enrique as defence sub (as his value is gonna skyrocket) with 0 in bank.

i have 5-2-3, but feel i have overweighted on Liverpool especially away against arsenal.

    MF: sinclair & adam
FW: torres & suarez & rooney

should i replace either adam or suarez with VDV or Aguero..

    thx for your advise pls.

What do you guys think of doubling up on Malouda AND Torres. Is Malouda essential? with his price he is an easy swap to any midfielders.

Having Malouda will give me a midfield of Malouda, Yaya, Brunt, Moses, Dyer. With Torres, Rooney and Suarez up front.

So is it better to spread Malouda's money elsewhere in my midfield or just stick to it?

I have TOTALLY thought about this. I would not say Malouda is essential, but that front 8 you have there is very good.

        Malouda, Yaya, Brunt, Moses, Dyer
        Torres, Suarez, Rooney

is not a too weak front 8 then? if i lose Malouda my front 8 would be

        Silva, Sessegnon, Sinclair, Brunt, Moses
        Torres, Suarez, Rooney

        with 1.0 in bank.

I'd agree if I had seen even one sliver of positive football last week. I just think they are the new Birmingham. Its such an ugly, defensive set. Otherwise, I agree fully. But Bent ends up very expensive for a negative mid-lower table team.
