Spot the Differential

As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

    Given – Vorm
    A Cole – Kompany – Brown – (Simpson – De Laet)
    Sessegnon – Cahill – N Zogbia – Moses (Ferguson)
    Rooney – Torres – Carroll

First I planed Silva and Suarez instead of Cahill and Carroll but….I chose this option cause I will maybe change Torres for Aguero for Gw4 and if Nasri come in City I am not sure how that impact on Silva and his contribution to City game… And, I prefer Carrol more than Suarez cause he will play 90 minutes for sure, he is better in playing with head and think he can make more damage to Arsenal defense.
    Anyone to comment

Terrible keeper combination. Why won't you use one of the cheaper Chelsea defence covers like Hilario or Bosingwa instead of Cole? I would get rid of Ferguson, and maybe Arteta is better long term than Cahill, but Cahill is safer. Like the plan with Torres-Aguero, probably will be doing the same. Carroll can come good against this Arsenal defence, agreed.

I will play Given most of the time.
A Cole is sure, I dont want to use transfers in a few weeks to fix it.
        Ferguson is bench warmer.
        Cahill is safe option.

But when Given has a tough away game, Vorm has a tougher one, I don't know why can't you just look it up.
There are better bench warmers for 4.5 than Ferguson.

Get a Villa defender instead of Evans, MU have quite a few injuries at the back, tough fixtures over the next 5 and a shaky keeper. Villa will get you the same amount of clean sheet short term guaranteed.

    I've been thinking...

If the objective of the game is to get the most points for your 100m then the only reason to have someone in your team that doesn’t return high points/mil is if they are a good captain choice. So this for me casts big doubts on players like Toure, Downing, A Young etc – mid to high price players who will score well but not necessarily return high pnts/mil. If I’m not prepared to captain them I’m starting to think I can’t really justify having them in the team. I’d be better off with the likes of Hoolahan, O’Hara, Taarabt etc and get more big guns that will give me the best captain options each week. This will lead to a very unbalanced team which everyone seems to warn against, but now I’m starting to think it might be the way to go.

I must admit I expected to see Baines pnts/mil projections being lower than they are so I had talked myself out of having him but he may as good as any which has turned my squad upside down now.

      Vorm + Given terrible choice.
      Lampard is too expensive.

seriouslt RM9, why is vorm and given so bad? whats that all about? They are this season's essential 2 - cheap clean sheeter, ultra cheap shot stopper.

Look at the season ticker and you'll know. When Given has a tough week so does Vorm. Why won't you use someone who rotates well, instead of jumping on a bandwagon without thinking?

Laugh thank you for dismissing my choice as jumping on the band wagon. Next time you talk some shit why don't you explain yourself rather than just insult people.

Problem with Given and Vorm is that they don't rotate well.Look at the fixtures. Some weeks you'd be happy to start either of them, other weeks you wouldn't want to start either of them.
            Schwarzer and Vorm is better.

I want Lampard so he's staying, price be damned. Now on the Johnson thing, he is rated like 1.4 points higher on ratemyteam (3.1 to 1.7) and he's a featured player on this site's scouting report.

      Still say Ward?

First RMT of the season after GW1's debacle.

    Hilario (Ruddy)
    Richards, Baines, Brown (Simpson, Gabbidon)
    Malouda, Cahill, N'Zogbia, Moses (Dyer)
    Holt, Rooney(v), Torres (C)

Could do Bosingwa instead of Richards, and have Given instead of Hilario. Not sure about that bit.

Cahill is an attempt at a differential but no idea about form.

    Thoughts?

Good team, but I'd definitely get some defender from Villa for the next few gameweeks, look at their performance last week and fixtures. Cahill has good games coming up, I'm going with Arteta though.

Thanks. Arteta is definitely an option. That might allow me to upgrade someone in the back line.

Just not sure if he's fit though.

Right a query for any fulham fans.

Im hearing rumour rhat Senderos was left out of europe game because he might be sold , any truth in this?

I was going to pick him but am now spending my 4.5 on a wolves defender (better defence this year)

save .5 swapping Given for Hilario, get Gabbidon right the **** out of dodge, perhaps R Taylor (unless they sign this new left back), I can't see the Tiote love - essentially poor bench, nice starting 11 IMO
