As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

    Play Enrique (Arsenal A)
    or
    Dyer (Wigan H)?

Dyer's fixture is obviously easier, but can see Pool keeping a cleanie against the lackadaisical Gunners...and maybe Enrique will ping in some nice crosses for Carroll (and Suarez)!

Actually thought Enrique did quite well for his first time out.

Backed RVP last week (gave him the armband stupidly). Didn't see too much creativity in the side, but I'm sure now RVP will score a brace and Enrique will get a red! 🙂

Forward line is Arguero Torres (c) Bent

Just mulling things over, got N'Zogbia in midfield but concerned about no Liverpool cover but normally Arsenal-Liverpool is traditionally low scores 1-1, 1-0. Concerned about Suarez but will probably downgrade Bent to him in next couple of weeks, plus not sure Arguero will start?

    What do you reckon?

I'd stick Aggers in my team, but there's just too much uncertainty now that it looks like Tevez might actually stay and even play this weekend according to Mankini (Although I think it's highly unlikely that it will be more than a cameo appearance if he does).

I have similar questions with my Suarez-Rooney-Aguero front line...not sure if it is worth switching Aguero to Torres or Bent until we are sure he is a 90 minute starter...

I do think Suarez will give the ARS back line a torrid time of it...

I probably won't wildcard in GW4 but will try to save up an extra transfer to get some Citeh attacking cover (Silva or Yaya).

Next 2 games are away though and I expect City to be much more defensive minded so I don't mind getting rid of Silva and just keeping Kompany for next 2 weeks.

I'm normally on here earlier in the day so some of you may not know me, but I'm an all round good guy so I'll be posting lots of replies to RMTs in the next couple of hours.

If you could be so kind as to rate mine, then that would be fine and dandy, as long as you give me reasons for any changes I should make.

Short replies like "Get rid of X" will be ignored.

So here it is. My dream team for the net few weeks:

    Given (Vorm)
    Brown, Kompany, Baines (Senderos, Simpson)
    Lampard, Sessegnon, Silva, Surman, Moses
    Rooney, Suarez (Graham)

Sod all left in the bank, which is a tad worrying, but plenty of flexibility to transfer in Mids and Forwards if it turns out to be the team from hell.

Give it your best shot, and I'll be chuffed.

I'm not rude, just don't want/need useless replies.

SAB: I just cant bring myself to bring in Bent or N'Zog because of the way that Big Eck lined up last week. I'll have to give them more time to work out whether he's going to change his overly defensive tactics.

Bent can get a goal out of nowhere, but he does need the supply, which he definitely wasn't getting last week, and N'Zog is his usual selfish self (which is usually good) but just looked off the pace.

I know they have good fixtures but their defence looks like a better area to invest.

Thanks, Vican. Moses vs Graham is a tough one.

I think I've changed that about twenty times in the last few hours. What's your thinking behind Graham over Moses?

Brown may pick up a card since it's a derby, but I think he's mature enough not to get involved in fights any more.

EPL Lover: thanks. Don't know whether Senderos is nailed on but it's the only way I could fit in Lamps. In for a penny, in for a pound and all that.

      Like it a lot!

Standard GK combo (I've gone for the same)
Solid defence-Would monitor Senderos...is he nailed on now? Hate wasting transfers on defenders!

Great to see that you squeezed Lamps in without compromising the rest of your squad, with Man U, Pool, and City coverage still in the mix.

I've found a need for Villa coverage with their nice fixtures...but with McLeish's defensive style, a lot of 1-0, 1-1, and 0-0 results could be common.
So it actually may not be a huge deal to go without Bent/N'Zog.

Not much to offer in the way of changes, well done!

Not too dissimilar to mine actually. Same 3 forwards and 4/5 of my defence. I downgraded Silva for Dempsey for next few weeks as Fool'em have got some nice games coming up and City have 2 trickier away ones.

Enough good captain choices there as well. Solid team that will serve you well over the long term.

Yep, but Man City are too, and Fulham have easier fixtures.

I'm really worried about the PPI index which gave Dempsey no bonus points at all whereas Silva picked up 1 measly point.

So I'm trying not to overthink this, but maybe Dempsey is the better bet as long as he doesn't have lots of shots off target.

Then again, Silva is getting into the swing of the Premier league and could well profit from a cameo appearance from Aggers again.

            Decisions, decisions... 🙂

I'll be playing Given 99% of the time, so Vorm is just the better 4.0M choice over Ruddy even though the rotation is almost non-existent with Given.

This is solely based on GW1 but Vorm looked like a class goalie.

Ruddy looked out of his depth.

Consdering the price difference of £3.5m between the two then clearly picking Aguero involves you having to make downgrades in other areas, right?

Without knowing what the options are its hard to say, but both look like they may not get a lot of minutes early on.

£4m in bank wont earn you many points. You have Tim Cahill in MF so no need for Saha.

Aguerro at least gives you some Man City coverage.

No Man Utd coverage. Interesting. They are the champions and will win most weeks, meaning they are more likely to score goals than any other club in the Prem.

Nani likes his home cooking and his next games are at OT.

Silva on the road next 2 so will likely be more defensive mindset from Mancini?

Personally I've gone with Rooney for MUFC cover and he will prob be a season keeper for me. He gives you all the Utd security and attacking threat that you need.

          No worries.

As I said above, Utd are the defending champions and red hot favourites to win it again. That means they will win more games than anyone else so they are going to score in probably 90% of the games they will play in.

You can't really go wrong with Utd attacking cover.

You have free transfers all this morning until 11:30.

I would use them if I were you.

Too expensive on keepers, defence, frankly, sucks and no need for Yaya and Silva in MF. Have one of them but not both.

      No Chelsea attacking coverage.

Moses looks like he's going to be pretty integral to everything Wigan do.

Hoolahan got lucky that Al Habsi pushed the ball into his path when he should have held on to it. That kind of luck won't come eery week, plus Norwich tend to spread the wealth around.

Neither really is a bad pick but I think Moses and the extra £0.5m to spend elsewhere will end up serving you better.

            Just my opinion though.

Only problem with Hilario is that you will spend a transfer swapping him out once Cech is back. Unless you plan to use WC that week then its a wasted transfer especially when you already have a Chelsea defender.

Too top heavy on strikers as well which has left you with a weaker midfield.

    1. Chelsea without cech can concede against anyone so no Hilario for me , very risky
    2. Suarez long term but next few weeks are awful , Rooney is a better bet even if more expensive
    3. Anyone considering ramsey ? cheap as chips and def starter now surely?
    4. Toure will score more pts over this season than Silva IMO, he will play more games and he is cheaper
    5. Nani or Young a must for me

      1. Great point but still offers decent value considering the fixtures. I wouldn't bring him in simply for the fact I wouldn't want to waste a transfer.

      2. Agreed. Going to bring him in later but can still see Suarez scoring regardless of fixtures which scares me a bit with the amount of ownership he has

      3. After GW4 he'll be on my radar

      4. Hard to say. I've stuck with Silva for now but if it appears to be a trend then thats definitely a nice place to save some cash

      5. Sadly I have neither and I'm a United fan. I've gone with just Rooney.. I simply couldn't pick one of them. I feel like whatever player I don't have will go out and do the business aka I had Nani last week lol

Lampard has been and will surely be playing deeper tomorrow so I'd prefer to have Torres. N'Zog has great fixtures coming up and besides Bent Villa don't have much firepower so you think he'd figure in the equation. Fletcher could be a nice differential though tbh. Fletcher appears to have carried on from where he left off last season and Lamps still on chelsea set pieces and pens.

Lots of Torres love, but he never actually scored last week, did he? Until he shows some goals I still think he's a risk at £11m.
