Two games into the season and Chelsea have struggled to make much of an impression. Andre Villas-Boas’ side have dominated both their opening fixtures in terms of possession – 66% at Stoke followed by 67% at home to West Brom on Saturday evening – but it’s already obvious that in order to implement the new manager’s philosophy, more creativity in the key attacking areas is needed.

At present, both full-backs, Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa, have carried the game to Chelsea’s opponents more than any Blues player. Re-installed to the first-team this season, Bosingwa showed on Sunday that his attacking tendencies could be a vital component of Villas-Boas’ team over the 2011/12 season and with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 5.5 in comparison to Cole’s 7.5, will likely rocket in Fantasy ownership if he continues in the same vein.

Both players have picked up the maximum 3 Bonus Points in each of Chelsea’s first two games- Cole in Gameweek 1 and Bosingwa in Gameweek 2- and with that in mind, here’s some analysis on the pair’s respective performances at Stamford Bridge against the Baggies:

Cole and Bosingwa versus West Brom

A look at the Chelsea average position map from the Baggies game highlights just how far forward Cole (3) and Bosingwa (17) played- the pair were almost as high up the pitch in possession as Frank Lampard (8) and Ramires (7) and both saw far more of the ball.

Bosingwa, in particular, was a real stand-out against Roy Hodgson’s side. He made 102 passes, more than any other player this Gameweek and with 68% of his distribution in the opposition half, he carries a significant threat going forward for Chelsea. Cole made 73 passes, a substantial drop in comparison, with 70% coming in the Baggies half.

Lampard and Ramires Passing

Much of this difference in the number of passes each full-back made can be attributed to the midfielders on either side of John Obi Mikel. When the ball went left, Cole had Frank Lampard to contend with for possession whereas on the right, Bosingwa had Ramires. Lampard was far more willing to take on responsibility and make things happen- Cole made 16 passes to Lampard but received 8 in return.

On the other flank, Bosingwa passed to Ramires 13 times and received 11 in return- a far more even ratio. Lampard made a total of 70 passes to Ramires’ 45- clearly, when the ball went right, Bosingwa was far more liable to be the player in possession and as a result, created the assist for Florent Malouda’s winner.

Narrow Baggies
For as much as the Chelsea full-backs were impressive going forward, West Brom’s lack of width was noticeable on Saturday evening and summed up Roy Hodgson’s savvy tactics. A look at the average position map show the two midfield wide men, Chris Brunt (11) and James Morrison (7) stayed narrow and with both central midfielders, Paul Scharner (33) and Youssuf Mulumbu (21) shielding the back-four, Villas-Boas’ side were unable to find a way through from central areas.

Aware of Chelsea’s lack of central cutting edge, Hodgson allowed Villas-Boas’ side the flanks, meaning Cole and Bosingwa bombed forward and left space at the back. When in possession West Brom hit 69 Long Balls for the hard-working front two, Shane Long and Somen Tchoyi , to chase into the space vacated- the ploy clearly worked as John Terry and Alex were troubled with the Baggies strikers’ movement throughout.

Though it’s early days in his stewardship, it’s clear Villas-Boas is still searching for a better balance. There’s something of an air of predictability about the Blues right now and it’s a problem the new boss must solve if he’s to live up to the heady levels of expectancy so typical of the Roman Abramovich regime.

Last night’s news that the club have agreed a fee with Valencia for the services of Juan Mata represents a significant step forward in his rebuilding process. Someone with the ability to beat a man and unlock defences from the middle of the park will not only add a vital component to Chelsea’s play and bring Villas-Boas a step closer to his ideal line-up, it will perhaps prevent the likes of Hodgson setting his team out in such a stolid and stubborn manner.

Price Rises...dang...just when I thought the game would "allow" for some correction to my team without losing out on more...fun times ahead.

For those wondering about certain players, I managed to catch the Review show for the weekend matches and this is what I thought: Cahill and Baines were inches away from scoring assists and goals and seem worth keeping for sure. They could easily have done great for any team who has them in...like my team. That was +/- 14pts and some BPs missed for sure. Sess blasted some killer shots that would have beaten most keepers on the day and is one kick short of a ton of goals I reckon. I thought City could have lost (probably should have drawn) their game against Bolton were it not for a keeper error and quality (and lucky) strike from Barry. By that account I could be suggesting that only Dzeko really scored a "proper" / "regulation-type" goal. Moses hit the crossbar with a "striker-type" break (very encouraging)...Swansea seem very light at the back too...almost too light. Liverpool were perhaps a bit fortunate to have scored either goal but Downing again shows promise with a cracking shot at goal and a near-assist for Carroll who managed, perhaps only one, decent header attempt at goal which was saved brilliantly (and obviously Suarez is/was great but must be noted that at that time Arsenal were down and out). RVP had a decent chance at goal and was a bit unfortunate to have not scored so I wouldn't discard his worth just yet. Villa simply beat a poor Blackburn and any team facing Rovers will now be confident of a win there. With that said...I didn't hear N'Zogbia's name once!

Now for most this will be old news but for those looking for answers to players in their team...this has at least put some of my doubts to rest. Hope my mad "scribble" helps some of you...sorry for the long post.

Look guys...I can see some of you don't like what I said...It's cool...I don't mind....I put this out there so that someone may read and take something from it. If you don't agree...that's fine by me.

It happens every so often that a long range goal goes in...but Barry won't be doing that every week...perhaps not at all again this season...I did say it was quality but had to stress it was perhaps also a tad lucky...so stop reading parts of what I've written...There is no denying the "champions" luck City are creating...Man U have had it for ages now...again...these are simply views of one single fan of the game...

In games where they want to go all-out attacking they could feasibly drop Barry and De Jong, play Toure as their deepest-lying midfielder, Nasri or Silva as an attacking midfielder with the other on the left, Johnson/Milner taking up the 4th spot in midfield, and Dzeko and Augero up front. Chuck Tevez into the mix too if he stays and that's a pretty terrifying front line.

I think that yes, it will slightly affect Silva who was looking like the sole provider for an impressive array of attacking options. Think Young/Nani. They are even priced the same at 9.5. Not great news for Silva owners (boo) but excellent news for City fans (yay!!).

Silva should play more central while Silva takes on the left side of midfield, but should continue to drift inward. He should also get priority over set pieces.

Been a great deal of conjecture in recent weeks regarding good value 4.5mill midfielders.

Allow me to answer. There really isn't such a thing this year. You will never play them so u may as well av ferguson from toon.

There are however excellent bargains to be had in the 5mill and 5.5mill bin.

Crazy! This was the strategy I followed in my first ever FPL season: Buy 1-2 players on your bench because they are the cheapest and you'll never play them anyway, use the extra cash to buy some big-guns.

This never really works. You'll do 'well' but not 'excellent'. You might end up in the top 100,000 places but not the top 10,000.

The top FPL players have a fully functioning bench. This serves 3 main purposes:

      1) Inevitably you'll get hit by a spate of injuries and WILL need all of your bench (normally around Nov - Jan time).

      2) Even the weaker players have double GWs sooner or later, you need to be in position to capitalise on that.

      3) Rotation, if O'Hara at 5.5 million is playing away at Man United and Dyer (swans) is playing at home to Blackburn (Dyer at 4.5 mill got 6 points this week), you'll want to go with Dyer, so you rotate.

If you go with Ferguson (New) you'll do OK. If you use your bench properly you can excel.

Guys I made my transfer on monday night as I was led to believe my total fpl that squarez was going up. He hasnt, is totalfpl wrong by alot this year? Fiso seems to be sayig that they need 79 k transfers in to rise by 0.1 where as total fpl are saying 45,000 or so?

Are the prices frozen again this week or has nooone reached this 79 k yet?

Suarez has gone up to 9.6m.

In fact, Jarvis, Silva, Suarez, Taylor R and Bosingwa have gone up in price.

Its worth bearing in mind that total fpl isn't a science, its an estimate.

As the season goes on and there is more data available then the estimate becomes more accurate. You can't expect them to get it spot on for the first price rises.

To get ppl thoughts on them. My only concern is that they are against each other and both may end up with low points.

There are other options like Downing, Brunt...

            anyways my midfield is like:

Silva, VDV, NZog, Anderson (Tiote) .. what do u think??

    My team:

    Hilario (Vorm)
Bosingwa Enrique Kompany (R Taylor, Gabbidon)
    Jarvis 5M Nani Silva (Ferguson)
    Torres Suarez Rooney

Hi guys, i've fiddled with my team to squeeze in the top heavy front three.
This has left me having to get a 5m midfielder in.
You think i'm best of downgrading Torres to Shane Long and using the cash to upgrade the 5M to Downing and someone else for Ferguson?
    Thanks.

Out of all defenders he is ranked:
            2nd for total passes
3rd for successful passes in opponent's half
            8th for successful crosses

One of the reasons I bought Vorm was expecting his price to go up so I can have a little profit later on.

It's true that he'll be a bench warmer most of the time since most people have Given as the main GK.

Given will definitely have more points in the long run. Plus having him in goal gives me less heart-attack than having Vorm. I have enough stress in other parts of the team already.

Which ONE of these three players is a must have for GW3: Malouda, Rooney or Long?

I'm planning on getting all of these players in the next few weeks, but I'm wanting to know which one I should get for this GW.

Currently, I have Bosingwa and Torres for Chelsea cover, but I'm worried that Torres' returns will be minimal, thus having Malouda as well would assure me of some points.

Rooney's form has been good and is up against a weakened Arsenal side.

And Long's form has also been good, and has the best short-term fixtures out of any of these players.

    Thought guys? Thanks.

last 15 min of odem showing was impressive, which miht relegate long to the bench occasionaly, especially playing with a lone striker against the big teams. after all despite his goal, long wasnt that impressive againt chelsea, missing out on that simple pass that wouldv made it 2-0

If this is the case then it's not worth a 4 point hit to get Rooney in. You've already got Nani for MU's cover anyway. He could score against Arsenal whilst Rooney assists the assist.
I'd probably wait a week and if Torres doesn't perform against Norwich then Torres --> Rooney (along with another transfer to free up 1.0m).

      1. You could argue neither did, they are still gathering data at the moment to be able to accurately predict for future game weeks. Little more time and both will be as accurate as each other.

    Anderson: 1 goal, 2 shots, 3 dribbles
    Rooney: 1 goal, 4 shots, 2 dribbles

Anderson get 2 points, rooney gets 1 ??????

Is 1 dribble worth more than 2 shots!!!

There are other heavy weighted factors such as shots off target as well.

Rooney had 2 shots off target, he would have had 3 bps without those. EA Index is flawed.

Exactly what I thought whilst watching the game...totally blew any grasp I had on this new EA system...Thought Rooney was certain for the 3 points..not that I have but still..

Not sure I would say flawed Granville, but it definitely feels bias in the shots of target respect.

Do we know if this is a set system? Does it get revised per season maybe?

It would be more accurate if they could measure the distance by which the shot was missed...i mean an inch or two off is far more accurate than row Z surely...

The way I see it different weights are applicable for different factors (goals, assists, shots on/off targets, good/bad passes, dribbles, etc.) in different positions. For instance, strikers might be punished more for shots of target compared to midfielders and defenders. On the other hand, PPI will be deducted less if a striker mis-places his pass compared to a midfielder.

Finally.. we got some price rise and no fall.

Some progress to resume some fun in this game back to us.

Btw, if price continue to change around 0600 - 0700 AM, it would be easier to manage.

A little knee-jerk save 0.2 to get Silva and Suarez.. 😀

Saw the Everton highlights...Cahill had 2 great goal opportunities (fouled in one attempt and messed up the second one...) so would wait a game or two on that hey...Everton were unlucky not have scored I feel...
