Goals are the lifeblood of our Fantasy lineup and the quest for goalscorers is, of course, a major factor in our selections on a weekly basis.

While several players have already shown their prowess in this area with two goals to their name, the statistical data available to our Members, and in particular the ICT Index, enables us to spot and monitor those who are yet to make their mark but are, nonetheless, finding themselves in goalscoring positions and posing a key threat to the opposition.

In this latest Members article, we take a look at the top players amongst midfielders and forwards in terms of the current “Threat†score within our ICT Index, identifying those players who have so far delivered on their promise, and those which seem likely to find the net in the near future.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Second season is always tough and I don't think he's the player he's made out to be but he's easily good enough to get 10+ league goals in this United side imo.

They probably can't do as much of this first touch passing game they've played this far with him in the side though.

I don't rate him highly at all, he offers very little apart from his "movement". He has little to no technique to fit into some of the passing moves United have shown so far.

He scores tap ins and not in a good Van Nistelrooy way either. He just looks void of any star quality, I think in time he will become an impact sub and that's it. Not good enough to be a regular starter for United.

i really want to write an article on him. for me he can't dribble, he can't pass, he can't cross but he can score. the argument then is he can't make goals out of nothing whilst other more complete strikers could but the counter argument is by finishing off some crosses he is effectively making something out of nothing. take his back header against stoke for example, most other players wouldn't have turned that situation into a goal so you can argue that he has made something out of nothing.
for an out and out goalscorer like hernandez a completely pointless and personal thing i do is divide their goals by 2/3 to get what imo is a more realistic account of their worth. the arguement being they need to score more goals than other strikers as they bring less to the table if they're not scoring. i did the same for kevin nolan and concluded he actually only scored about 7 goals last season and for someone who ate up a midfield spot all season they were right to sell him

It's not only the goals though, it's the fact hernandez got crucial goals for us last season. Stoke, Valencia, Chelsea in both league and CL, Everton every single one was crucial to the season's success. I love the fact fans of tikka-takka don't like him, because he'll keep scoring those crucial goals.

I accept what you say, but there is so much more skill to scoring than actually putting the ball over the line. The skill in making space for yourself and outwitting defenders is vital.

You still can't criticise 20 goals in a season and still look good after it, because there is simply nothing more important.

He might end up an impact sub, who knows, but he was one of the most important players for United last season.

not criticing, jut putting an argument across (it isn't actually an argument at all, just an observation). he's a through ball and 6 yard box striker. take AP's vid for example, in 20 goals he beat 1 man, luckily that's right up my street as to me that's football, dribbling is a last resort imo

Well, let us put it this way - I want a player with that positional sense, and that timing, and that coolness under fire, and that irritating ability to get under opponents skins, and that pace - oh and did I mention he scores, and assists too - in my team, please!

Personally, so long as he ties himself to one of their outfield players, I don't give a toss if he doesn't run around the midfield. I am sorry, I just can't see the downside ...

Rating the kid on his CL final performance is a bit harsh. If we went on that, Valencia and Carrick would be working as bin-men by now.

But, yeah, he needs to do a bit more than sit offside all day and tap in the odd goal. 🙂

Hernandez, a good finisher correct. Scoring a goal is the hardest skill in football and that's why goalscorers are paid the biggest bucks.
Has something changed in football that I'm not aware of? Jimmy Greaves, probably the greatest English striker, was just a finisher, like Hernandez, like Raul, like Owen. I don't care what era he played in, the game is still the same, you score goals you win football matches.

Strikers these days need to do more than score goals.

If you're Javier Hernandez, who can score goal and little else, you're not going to ever be in the same category as Rooney/van Persie/Villa/Tevez/pre-malaria Drogba because they can all do that and so much more.

I thought this whole debate was settled by Hernandez's no-show in the Champions' League final. If United had another midfielder in there, they would have stood more of a chance.

The hernandez debate wasn't settled after one game. It was for you maybe, but again, it's judged on a season. One where he scored crucial goals that won us the title. If Van Persie offers so much more, then why don't you win more? Simple question.

Because Arsenal and United have 20-30 more players than just Hernandez and van Persie.

Hernandez is very useful as an impact player, but he's not, and never will be in the same bracket as those I previously mentioned.

So winning isn't due to one player - but losing (the champions league final) is?

Which one is it? In respect to that - did Guardiola say anything like this about RvP before your ties?

'I'm scared of everything from Man United, I fear absolutely everything' - and stressed Hernandez's understanding and use of gaps between opponents.

'He can get into any space, he really is surprisingly good at that, Rooney also has that ability.'

I know you can't go back on your Hernandez stance from last summer, but come on, last season made you look a bit silly.

No, if I'm wrong, I back down - see Smalling.

But Hernandez being on the pitch immediately disadvantages his side, because they're essentially a man down.

United have the players to deal with that most of the time, but it can cost them when they need the extra body (like the Barcelona game, and the Arsenal one at the Emirates)

Walcott got talked up by Guardiola and co on ore than one occasion.

Faulk it's more that Hernandez is a player who wouldn't fit in at Arsenal therefore you don't understand or rate his qualities. You're so indoctrinated to the arsenal philosophy that anything else is met with classic gooner disdain... like your obsession that to be a good team you have to play 433 and pass the ball 4 thousand times!

Fergie sums it up for me, if this is a disadvantage then bring it on:

"Hernandez is fantastic at taking up positions inside the penalty box," said Ferguson. It is natural. He has the instinct to move around and his timing is terrific..

...There have only been a few top strikers who have had that quality."

                    A man down?
You talk as if Hernandez doesn't even put in a shift. Watch him, he tackles, he tracks back etc.. If he's not the best at it, then he makes up with it by being so clinical.

                    I would argue that we're 2/3rds of a man up 🙂

There are loads of players who wouldn't fit in at Arsenal who I rate - Vidic, Valencia, Berbatov, De Jong, Baines, Dzeko, Jose Enrique.

I just think Hernandez is too bad at too many things.

On a side note, i absolutely love the fact Utd are returning to their old super direct speedy wingers style. The Anderson goal was 15sec from De Gea's hands to the ball being in the back of the net. Like the Kanchelskis, Giggs era. You won't beat Barca at their own game, may as well go back to what we do brilliantly.

that point about beating barca at their own game AP is why i fear for berbatov and carrick, they're the type of players who help you play like barcelona but of course no one will ever be able to do that as well as them. i think you've got to trust fergie with this tweak in his approach/philosophy

Yup, it's one of the reasons i think he went for De Gea. He starts swift counter attacks very well with his distribution, even if he's weak on crosses. Berbatov you'd think is finished at Utd but then why didn't they sell him to PSG? Weird one that. Carrick just got a new contract too.

With Van Persie last year, at times he was coming so deep for the ball that he was often not in the box when he was needed most. You could really have done with a goal hanger.
There are so many different ways to set up your side in football, one cap doesn't fit all.

I'm not saying the best strikers are the ones who score the odd 30 yard screamer of spend most of the game doing pointless tricks, you are right that a striker is there to score goals. But at a top club like United should he not offer something else? Tevez gets his fair share of tap ins but he works damn hard for the team as well.

Like you said goals win football matches but it takes 11 men to stop the other team scoring not 10.

Hi All, am having a really hard time deciding on some midfielders... could really use some sage advice.Team looks like this:-

    Given~Ruddy
    Bos~Smalling~Enrique~Simpson~Ward
    Adam~Silva... A+B+C=16.5m
    Roo~Bent~Suarez

Currently have A-Jarvis B-Brunt C-Dyer. Can you suggest better for 16.5m???

Ok then. Yeah those three look good for 16.5m. Brunt has great fixtures. N Dyer picked up 3 BPs and looks as good as Sinclair at the moment (minus pens) but a good option at 4.5, I had him in GW1 but stuoidly changed to Surman.
Jarvis good form and Wolves looking good.

Don't like Adam in there. LFC fixtures not the best. But if ur convinced on Liverpool maybe Downing...he looks a more direct goal threat...thoa Adam is on set pieces and looks (still to be A BP magnet)

          Good team ovwerall

First u need to be good to be in the Barcelona midfield every game.

And just for the record he has 9 goals in 16 appearance for England U 21.

He scored 4 goals at home last year and I don't even need to mention that goal for England in the WC. That double against Liv in the CL...

Lampard played in all 38 Premier League matches for the third consecutive season in 2004–05. He finished with 13 goals (19 in all competitions), in addition to leading the league in assists with sixteen.

Maybe Mata and Malouda could play together, not like we have 5 quality wingers after all.

Mata's statement on this topic BTW:

'The plan is that I can play on either flank or even in the middle playing in between the lines of midfield and attack. I like to keep the ball and use it well, I am an attacking player and above all I like to set up goals and score them also.

    Dzeko at 8.5

    or

    Aguero at 11.0

this one is doing my head in. I know Aguero will outscore Dzeko in the end, but right now, I'm not sure. Dzeko looks just as nailed on as Aguero and is always around the box for goals something like Berbatov last season. and the extra 2.5 is nice. But Kun is special and will have games with big scores imo where Dzeko might not do much.

Would Jarvis and Long be a better bet?

I fancied Taarabt because he has Wigan this week giving me this team:

    Hilario (Vorm)
Bosingwa Enrique Simpson (R Taylor, Gabbidon)
    Brunt Taarabt Malouda Nani Silva

    Hi again guys.

Someone asked earlier if I was sure about using my W/C. I said yes but not I'm hovering over the transfer button but my gut feeling is "you're silly"
This is my team - thoughts on whether I should do it?
On reflection having Chelsea cover may not be the worst thing in the world.

    Given
    Richards - Baines - Cole A
    Dyer - Walters - Silva - Malouda
    Graham - Torres - Bent

Vorm - Moses - Simpson - De Laet

You don't need to wildcard with that team - maybe lose Torres and/or Malouda after the Norwich game, and once the Chelsea defence is settled you could downgrade Cole to Bosingwa/Luiz/Alex.

That team could score really well this week, though.

He was going to be, but he missed his mum too much.

Grew up in such a small, tight-knit community that London was too much of a culture shock. It very sadly wreaked what could have been a brilliant career.

there was a point where people considered him a bigger talent than Ronaldo.

You have to look at it like a business because essentially that's what football clubs are supposed to be. They have turned a profit from transfers and no other club in the top 4 could say that.

Well yes and no. Some people would argue that any sporting franchise is more or less a billionaire's toy.

The reality is that irrespective of how much of a transfer profit or operating profit a football club generates, the real value (from an owner's perspective) is the franchise value (which is wht the club can ultimately be sold for). Look at the valuation that Man Utd is going to be selling shares at on the Singapore Stock Exchange? That is also from a position of weakness because they have to raise money to pay down debt. The valuation has nothing to do with their bottom line, it has everything to do with their franchise value, which primarily came from winning trophies, which eventually leads to a greater fan base and outreach.

They also sell players for more money than any other club.

Arsenal have made money in the transfer market in the last 5 years and bought players for less money than Newcastle, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Sunderland, City, United, Chelsea and Liverpool over the same period.

How can that be any consolation to Arsenal fans when other clubs have come, overpaid for their players and as a result now have an inferior side.

Have they really spent less on players than Newcastle, West Ham, Middlesbrough, Aston Villa, Tottenham, Sunderland?

I wouldn't say that selling Hleb, Adebayor, Toure, Clichy, Bentley or the like has made us an inferior side.

It was the quick releases of more experienced players and the recent losses of Fabregas & Nasri that has done that.

Wenger's plan was very close to working perfectly, he just failed to see the importance of experienced players to help the younger players through.

If he'd have kept Vieira, Gilberto and Campbell, we'd have won the league at least once in the least 4 years.

I've been trying to check those numbers out more closely and it might be that Gervinho is not included in the numbers I have which would put Arsenal back above Middlesbrough. Villa have bought players for £90M, Martin O'Neil being the main culprit there spending £150M on players.

I don't think it's any consolation, I just pointed out that plenty of clubs spend more than Arsenal while they built and continue to pay off that stadium.

Here is the link to the site, I reckon some of the numbers are a bit off but it's fairly accurate.

It's crazy what they're doing over there. Crazy. Hughes and Sven-Göran Eriksson spent incredible amounts of money without winning anything.

The manager table ( http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/managers-comparisons.html ) is actually a great read too.

Juande Ramos bought players for £136M remember him Spurs fans? 😉

I wonder what Damien Comolli's net spend is. All those players at Sp*rs, and now Andy Carroll & co at Liverpool.

No wonder he left Arsenal, he can't put the chequebook down.

I'm obviously hugely biased against City, so I don't think I should answer this, but how much credit will they actually get if they win the league in the next couple of years.

less credit but put yourself in the shoes of a city fan or a chelsea fan 7 years ago. all they can do is get excited about and support their team. although yes a realisation deep down that it's a little bit dodgy wouldn't go amiss. still though if i'd been a city fan for the last 20 years i'd be loving it right now

I'm still undecided on my own opinion but there can be no doubt that the first (if any) big titles they win will be remembered almost only solely for the huge spending that made it possible.

definitely not de laet anyway. my reasoning is newcastle have started well but are still struggling for goals. opta told me on saturday that man city have conceded at least 2 goals in 6 of their last 8 away games which was a surprise

I've no idea unless you link your team. (see FAQs). Maybe you are wildcarding, again I don't know.
As footballers playing in a good team, I would say M Richards.
Then again you might have Hart and Kompany already, in which case I would then say definitely not....see what I mean?

        Vorm
        Baines, Bosingwa, Hughes
        Young, Silva, Brunt, Jarvis
        Suarez, Torres, Graham

Subs: Given, De Laet, Richards, Moses

ebay, made sure it was an enlgish seller for obvious cough dodgy asian seller cough reasons. basically eyed up a few for about a month now (including the home one which you have) and thought this one was good value at the £21 i got it for eventually. i've already seen the same shirt in the same condition for sale at £75 on other sites.
ironically i had the shirt as a kid but it's long gone now. giggs 11 on the back, standard 😉

apparently the name and number was printed at the utd store.
the good thing about that grey shirt i thought is it would be easier to find it in mint condition due to how quickly fans would have shoved it away in a cupboard and forgotten about it as it wasn't being used

WOW I am loving the posting tonight. Finally some good debates. No more sheep constantly asking for RMT.

I have one question is Connolly nailed on starter for QPR? They signed Ayala right? Orr and Gabbidon are liabilities IMO so?

    I need 4.0 QPR defender.

They rotate nice with my other defenders. I refuse to sign Orr Tosey said that he saw him for 6 years and that he is awful defender. I had Gabbiddon and he scored own goal for me so I am thinking Connolly.
