The Gameweek Captain Poll is now open and sitting proudly in the middle column of your homepage.

While last week’s effort saw Chelsea’s Fernando Torres run away with the majority vote, only to fall flat yet again, this week’s poll already looks a far more intriguing affair.

We’ve just over 300 votes in already and the top rankings look keenly contested. Torres, despite failing once again to find the net against the Baggies, is once more a front runner with the Norwich defence due at the Bridge this weekend. The Spaniard is just one of four strikers currently leading the pack.

Liverpool’s Luis Suarez will surely get more than 19 minutes to inflict damage on an obliging Bolton defence at Anfield, while Wayne Rooney is another two-in-two striker with a home fixture this weekend. The ravaged Arsenal line-up looks likely to be patched once again – Rooney could be well placed to capitalise.

It’s Darren Bent who leads the way right now, though – but only just. He’ll be setting his sights on a Wolves defence at Villa Park on Saturday, although Mick McCarthy’s side will arrive with consecutive wins and just one goal against. Bent won’t find it easy then, but is currently the armband favourite off the back of a goal and an assist, in addition to Fantasy Premier League bonus, in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Blackburn.

Below this quartet we find Frank Lampard hovering, an option again boosted by the fact that Chelsea will be widely expected to notch at least a couple against Paul Lambert’s back-four. Likewise, Florent Malouda is an option currently garnering votes. David Silva is already being backed to prolong his sparkling start to the season, despite a testing trip to White Hart Lane, while a few are backing Victor Moses to recover from a knock to take the fight to QPR at the DW Stadium.

An interesting array of poll options, without a clear leader. Cast your vote at some point over the week and throw in your early opinions right here.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Dbronaldo RE. Chinese inventing football

Ok, I've had a quick skim read of it and although I acknowledge there are some superficial resemblances to our modern game in as much as it involves using your feet to kick a ball into a goal, it is not football. It is Cuju.

There has often been dispute into the origin of football, the Mayans and Zapotecs of the Yucatan Peninsular also have a case as they had a ball game that may have involved using your feet or hip. It is not football.

The English game is said to have evolved from an Early Medieval practice where two villages would compete. The aim was to kick an inflated pigs bladder against the side of the opposing villages tavern. Whichever side did this first was the winner. This again is not football.

Football is the game we play today where the rules and practice of the game were laid out in the middle part of the nineteenth century. This was carried out in England and rapidly became popular as the English Empire expanded.

Indeed. Why do you think we get teams out in South America with names like Newell's Old Boys?

Football in every country can trace their roots back to England, not China.

Well exactly. The Chinese are historically quite interesting like that, they have a period of expansion and engagement then retract into being a really inward country again.
Look at Zheng He, he discovered Australia, South America, well loads of places before the Europeans, but those discoveries were never acted upon.

Person 1: "hey guys, look what I found"

Person 2: "oh, that? yeah, I found that ages ago, just didn't bother telling anyone"

Attila are you aware its officially recognised as a Chinese invention due to evidence provided in your field since 2004

Also the formal organisation that MF is on about is a different issue - and would appear to be entirely of British background

But are you aware that the article linked is a Chinese website? Thus is probably part of the ongoing attempt at cultural integration and 'look at us we're just like you' propaganda the Chinese government have been pedalling recently?
It is NOT accepted anywhere but China and by a few folk who are a bit puddled.
Basically I cannot say for certain that an Englishman first kicked a ball shaped object as a leisure activity. But that is NOT the point. The point is that the modern game as we know it has its origins, rules and organisation firmly in England.
Any other country (besides China) would agree.

                  😆
That doesn't make it true though. The sport that the world plays is that outlined, created and organised in England.
Just because China had a game with some superficial likenesses to our modern game first doesn't make it the ancestor of football. That game never travelled outside of China, thus it never influenced the English game. The English game was exported through Empire and trade throughout the world.
Come on lad, by that rationale the Ancient Greeks invented the jet engine (they didn't) and Da Vinci invented the helicopter (he didn't). They produced items or schematics with some similarities that never had any influence over the modern jet engine or helicopter.
Fifa are entirely nonsensical in backing this rubbish.

Nope. Chinese had a similar game which English sailor copied and brought back to british shores.

It grew from that into various games.

Football these days eh? Welllllllll Arsenal DID sign him for £14 million from a historically prestigious club Marseilles.. because they had that evil money thing of which you speak.
"Back in the day" there were hardly any French players in England, and a player like Nasri would've been delighted to stay and play for a team like Marseilles.

Honestly, with Barton going to QPR and Parker reportedly going to Spurs, what is Arsene doing? Right there are two players they could do with, one for free and the other for not a considerably huge fee. At least those two are experienced in the PL.

So the World and European champions are no longer the number 1 team in the world, despite impressive results in qualifying for next tournament (5 wins out of 5). Basically because they lost a friendly to Italy?
