Spurs, Fulham and Stoke all comfortably qualify for the Europa League Group stages, though Martin Jol’s joy was tempered by a leg injury to John Arne Riise. Harry Redknapp starts to bring in the loan stars, with Craig Bellamy and Joe Cole next up on his radar. Arsene Wenger looks to France for midfield replenishments, while David Gill declares Man United’s summer spending is now at an end. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Fulham progressed to the Europa League group stages last night with a 3-1 aggregate win over Dnipro. The triumph was overshadowed by what Martin Jol described as a serious leg injury to John Arne Riise. While we await more on the prognosis, Fantasy managers will no doubt be eyeing up Riise’s replacement Matthew Briggs as a possible cheap alternative- the left-back comes in at 4.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Spurs also eased into the group stages with a 5-0 aggregate win over Hearts. Five-up from the first leg, Harry Redknapp fielded a few youngsters for last night’s return clash, though Tom Huddlestone played the full ninety minutes and will come into contention for a starting slot for Sunday’s home clash with Man City. . Redknapp also announced that Luka Modric will play against Roberto Mancini’s side.

Redknapp has continued his summer recruitment drive. Acquisitions have been thin on the ground for Spurs but yesterday saw two new names make their way to White Hart Lane on season-long loans: Juventus attacking midfielder Yago Falque and, of course, Man City’s former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor. Redknapp is itching for more, though, and has even mentioned Joe Cole as a possibility.

Craig Bellamy also comes into the equation for Harry- Man City are desperate to get the player off their books and may even pay off the remainder of his contract in order to ensure his exit. The Welshman has also been linked with a return to former club Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger has turned to his native France in the hunt for new midfield recruits. The likes of Marvin Martin and Yann MVila are on the Gunners bosses radar ahead of next Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

Newcastle were the final Premier League team to play in the Carling Cup this week and Ryan Taylor once again showed his eye for a killer free-kick for the second game on the trot. Sammy Ameobi spared Alan Pardew’s blushes with his first Magpies goal late in injury time to ensure his side’s progression.

Tony Pulis fielded a strong line-up as Stoke beat FC Thun 4-1 at home to book a place in the Europa League group stages. Robert Huth and Matt Etherington missed out due to suspension, while Jermaine Pennant recovered from a weekend knock sustained at Norwich to take his place in the first X. Kenwyne Jones continued his strong start to the new campaign with a brace and Matthew Upson got his Potters career off to a good start with the opener.

Man United chief executive David Gill reckons the club are done buying for the season ahead. The champions have been linked with a move for Wesley Sneijder all summer but the Dutchman’s astronomical wage demands, coupled with the recent performances of the likes of Tom Cleverley and Anderson in central midfield areas, means United are now content with their current squad and Gill said yesterday:

I don’t think there will be another arrival. We’re very comfortable with that. We’ve looked at various players but we’re comfortable with the squad. We’ll progress now and I’m sure Sir Alex will get the best out of them over the next few months. We’re very happy with the squad. We’ve made some great additions and are well equipped for the months ahead.

Yellow flagged does not equal protection, as his price can still change. However, when a player is flagged it takes 2.5 times as many net transfers out for his price to drop.

At least it used to... FPL may have changed the system completely!

Oh, and when the flag is removed, THEN his price is supposed to be protected (if the flag has been there for two or more days), but it doesn't always work out that way.

I'm big into amateur podcasting, so I have more patience with these things than most, but I find them charming, amusing and useful.

If a player that I'm considering comes up in the weeks chat (and they often do, as I'm not particularly imaginative) then I will always take what they say under consideration. Granville in particular discusses these things with a very level-headed approach, which is useful given the hyperventilating which often goes on on these boards.

    Posting this again.

    I have 10.3 for a goalkeeper and a midfielder.
Is it better go for Given + 5.0 midfielder (probably Mosese/Whelan) or Krul + 5.5 midfielder (could be Eagles/Watson etc.)? Any suggestions for other midfielders?

    Thanks!

Just worked out if Briggs starts I can do this with my wildie after the internationals:

    Lescott>Briggs = 2.5 in bank
    Bale>Mata = 1.5 cost
    YaYa>Silva = 1.6 cost
Sinclair>downgrade to cheapie to cover defecit

    I will then have Mata/Silva/Rooney/Saurez/RVP!

All bases covered! Sod the rest but will have Begovic/Huth/Kompany/Moses and three cheap defenders to rotate in Briggs/De Leat/Simpson so not all bad....

See how things go this week..

I guess that means he will start (or play at the least).

I've got Zamora coming off the bench as well 😐

Cheers man, yeah it looks likely he'll play, might leave him in then, or if he doesn't play at very least i'll get the points for hughes or de laet. thanks again.

secondly, any views on who is their captain choice for this gameweek? ive captained lampard myself, just got a feeling he's gonna demolish norwich, torres picking one up too 🙂

He might come on as a sub and get 30 mins... but I'm risking it anyway because of Zamora.

I've gone for Suarez captain if that's what you're asking due to form (of team and player) and fixture. Lampard has done very little so far!

He's cheap (and good value) enough to sit on your bench even if he's out for a couple of weeks.

I have Rooney and Suarez as the other two. ATM I have aguero, to fit Van Persie in I need to free some money.

Afternoon, chaps. Would very much appreciate some advice on the following - The left team is a knee-jerky wildcard team that I fancy, and the right team is my current line-up. Left or right?

Right. Not enough real change to justify ... and not all change helpful, imo.

        Ok then,

Enrique and DeLaet or Kompany and Wilkinson,

Mata, M Petrov and Tiote or Larsson, N'Zogbia and Ramsey.

The changes then allow for Holt to Bent.

I think you should decide who you really want in and your strategy and then work from there. There's too much variation in strategy to simply choose left or right

Best 4.0 to 4.4 defender? (already have Simpson)

    De Laet? R.Taylor? Briggs?

Is De Laet likely to score/assist much? Have never seen him play...
Is Briggs a shoe-in for left back with Riise out or what are his chances?
Reluctant to get R.Taylor because already have Simpson, he might eventually lose his place and I might need the extra 0.1m in a few weeks...

    Thoughts?

.8 cheaper than VDV and my mid is packed anyway. I could see him ripping it up for a while.

    My team is (CAPS=STARTING):

    GIVEN
    ENRIQUE RTAYLOR ACOLE hughes jagielka
    MIKEL BRUNT NZOGBIA SINCLAIR larsson
    ROONEY SUAREZ BENT

Thinking of captaining bent after a solid game gw2 but suarez also looks good.

    Thoughts?

Due to the fact I am captaining Suarez, you'll be safer going with Bent.

    worth transferring saha out?

Long + Lampard would be my choice.

A fit Frank Lampard is a perfect Fantasy Football player. Also Lamps seems to be slightly cheaper than in previous seasons which is a bonus.
