This afternoon has seen Fantasy Premier League (FPL) update the stats after reviewing a couple of incidents from last weekend’s games.

Under this season’s new assist ruling (below), Wayne Rooney has another assist to his name, given for his role in this Ashley Young goal (1min03sec).

It’s a decision that’s likely to cause plenty consternation across the Fantasy world and is arguably as contentious as any Bonus Points decision that’s gone by. Under the letter of the law, though, it seems it must be applied. The Bonus Points for the match will stand, though, with Ashley Young still having a greater EA Sports PPI.

Elsewhere, Martin Petrov was awarded an assist for his role in Bolton’s late consolation at Anfield.

Crossing Potential
Certainly it seems that players supplying crosses may well be in line for increased assists. Perhaps it’s only speculation but, given that this rule change has thrown up an early example of an assist awarded which wouldn’t be given last season, we should perhaps expect more examples and an increase in assists from crossed balls.

It seems that even if a cross is unsuccessful, then, it could still be turned into a potential assist if the defending side’s clearance falls at the feet of the right opposition player, a la Ashley Young. The likes of Leighton Baines and Stewart Downing –given their number of crosses- are suddenly a little more appealing.

Assists
Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal.

In the event of a penalty or free-kick, the player earning the penalty or free-kick gets an assist if a goal is directly scored, but not if he takes it himself, in which case no assist is given.

All assists are reviewed before the points are updated at the end of each day.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Some stats on Fulham...

Last season, the team averaged 23 crosses per game with 64 long balls and 380 short passes. After three games of this season, those statistics stand at 22 crosses, 58 long balls and 374 short passes.

I originally had Silva but after taking lots of advice from here after his "10 shots against Swansea" i got him in to upgrade my strike force.

Walcott could be a good shout, and a differential at this stage. I think Osmans worth keeping with his fixtures for the time being and being as i have Dzeko, Yaya Toure will be replaced with Mata when i can afford it. Good idea?

Yep sounds good to me.. Moses looks like he could be dead wood but there's not a lot of value in the price bracket that you'd be left with. As strange as it sounds there may be no better time to invest in Arsenal due to their nice fixtures, and Walcott is the only one bar RVP that I'd consider.

            25 total spend (i.e. keep Moses/Dyer) - I'd go:

            Nasri (9.5)
            Walters (6.0)
            Walcott (9.0)

(you could then do Moses to Petrov with the remaining 0.5)

                8 point hit I assume?

                Hmmm

Then I'd go Sess -> Nasri (or Silva if you prefer, but it'll cost you an extra 0.1), and then work out which of the other subs to make in the following gameweeks.

I might be tempted to take a 4 point hit for Toure/Osman -> Nasri/Walcott (but you have today to make that choice since Nasri will increase and price you out of that).

Do people think that Suarez is as fixture proof as Rooney?

Would you be happy to take Suarez back at around 10?

Suarez is going to rise in price everytime he sniffs a goal over the next 4/5 GWs.

I think its madness to drop him if you got in at 9.5. And yes, I think he's fixture proof.

I know, his price is the main reason I've been hesitant in pulling the trigger. I'm just going to wait and see what happens over the international break I guess. See how fit he is, not much point in doing any transfers for now anyways since both Suarez and RVP could be injured by the time the international break is over anyways.

    A thought/theory/point for debate:

The key attribute of a great fantasy football player is the ability to understand the parameters of the game and operate in the game in such a way as to achieve the optimum strategy to solve the game.

This season, we have some new parameters to adjust to:
    - EA bp index
    - New scoring rules e.g. the assists alluded to in this article
    - A seemingly new system(at least in terms of timing) of price increases/decreases.

Added to this we have had some teething issues e.g. second week wildcard to adjust to.

Here is my assertion: these new changes/teething problems actually FAVOUR a strategy player in the long run, since such players adjust correctly in a quicker manner than the casual player. At the end of the 38gw's, the top 1k will include many of the games most consistent gamers to date.

    Thoughts on this?

Strategy players will make observations that players who ignore strategy don't e.g. BP index seems to favour goalscorers more than playmakers and redistribute their budget accordingly.

This is one small example. There are several nuances. The point is the 'chaos' favours the strategy player because they will look for the optimal solution in any set of circumstances.

Any idiot can pick a goalscorer in a system that already favours goalscorers. And goalscorers kind of tend to be well known.

The observation would have to be to pick players who'll overperform based on getting BP's despite not getting goals/assists (requires greater knowledge of the game).

      My take:

New EA BP index - rewards the usual suspects (goal scorers) that most people now of any way (i.e. no value in being a good 'stategist' and picking defensive mids that collect BPs) - score for 'casual' players
New scoring rules - pure luck - favours no-one
Timing of price increases - favours players who delay their decisions, removes the balance element of early subs vs. waiting for injury/team news - favours casual players who check their team on Fridays only. Any additional things to factor in decisions favours strategists - this removes them. (NOTE: I don't think there is any actual change though)

All those considering Van Persie for the up coming weeks, are you not concerned that he no longer has Cesc and Samri creating the chances? Same goes for Walcott to a lesser degree - they're worth 12m and 9m, respectively, when they have Cesc and Nasri dominating possession.

I think Gervinho is the pick at 9m, it's just a shame he takes up a forward spot.

Might be a wait and see how Arsenal get on against Swansea, or wait for team news on whether Song and/or Wilshere are back. Arsenal will need ball winners against the Swans who look to pass it pretty well.

Agreed, but he's being asked to play in the Wilshere / Song role and he doesn't look like a box-to-box mid to me.

I picked Ramsey for GW1 thinking he'll play the Cesc role, but with Arsenal's injuries he's struggling to make much of an impact.

Is it worth taking a 4 point hit to swap out Alex for Bosingwa/Kompany when my defense is:

    Vorm/Begovic
Alex, De Laet, S Taylor, Enrique, Baines

    Thanks

No, you can make do with Enrique, Baines and one of de Laet/Taylor (in fact I would drop Alex to a 4.0/4.5 defender that rotates in with the other two and save the cash).

Depends if Alex ends up being transfered. If he ends up on another team, he might be worth holding on to. Either way, I'd wait if I was you.

So looking to do a potential shift of the guard and weighing up two similar options:

    Option 1:
    Sell: Aguero (11.0), Taarabt (6.5), Baines (8.0)
    Buy: Dzeko (8.6), A Young (10.1), P Jones (5.5) + 1.3 left over

    OR

    Option 2:
    Sell: Aguero (11.0), Taarabt (6.5), Sessegnon (6.5)
    Buy: Dzeko (8.6), A Young (10.1), N Dyer (4.5) +0.8 left over

I like option 2, as I tend to prefer to play defenders over midfielders, and I would keep Baines. I tend to have a couple of perennial bench warmers each week and N Dyer would join Tiote there, as only the occasional stand-in.

I like Aguero, but for the price and Dzeko’s performances thus far, I can’t justify the diff if i can also upgrade a midfielder to A Young with minimum loss.

Option 1 gives me a useful defender (could also choose Smalling for the same price) that will throw Aaron Hughes (FUL) more on my bench and leave some stash for a later upgrade somewhere…

    Your thoughts?

All 4 players with a Man City midfielder as your 5th and your team would look pretty good.

        Thanks for feedback.

        I'm doing Walcott & Anderson.

Not sure about 2 Arsenal midfielders (or even players now) but I understand your point.

I have Rooney C so fine for me, but I have to say I'm surprised that we have a new rule that deems this type of thing an assist. A cross that is deflected and then headed clear!!!!

I prefer the old rule where an assist has a much more direct link with the goal scored.

I have 2 transfers this week. I would like to free up cash to fund further transfers.

    Current backline: Giv Vorm
    Kompany Baines Brown Simpson Warnock

Would you do 1 of either : Kompany or Baines for Enrique or Bosingwa.

Sunderlan make 10m bid for Crouch according to SSN. I know prices get inflated towards the end of the transfer window but that is just ridiculous.

And what happened to Joel Campbell? Arsenal were meant to have signed him I think, young Costa Rican striker...

No work permit .Complete waste of time. Dick Law could've been nailing down Mata, instead spent a week in Costa Rica on a 1m striker.
