Newcastle have this evening confirmed the capture of Italian international left-back Davide Santon from Inter for an undisclosed fee.

The 20 year-old arrives at St James’ Park on a five-year deal and has immediately been handed the Magpies’ number three shirt.

For Fantasy Managers, that should immediately ring alarm bells. Santon’s arrival presents a significant threat to Ryan Taylor’s position at left-back having seen the former Wigan man establish himself as an early season favourite.

Taylor scored the winning goal in the North East derby win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in Gameweek two and, with 12% ownership (280,000+ owners) in the Fantasy Premier League game, had enjoyed a 0.2 price increase from his initial 4.0 valuation.

Those who were tempted by Taylor’s early season form may have hoped that their man would be set for a sustained run in the starting lineup. Indeed, following his winner at Sunderland, Alan Pardew had suggested that it would be difficult to dislodge Taylor from his starting berth..

“We are trying to bring a left-back in and he is going to have to be a good one to take Ryan out of the team”

But the reality is that Taylor is a right-footed player filling in at left-back – a real short term prospect. Santon, despite being equipped to play either side of defence, has been bought to replace Jose Enrique and Taylor now faces the prospect of dropping to the bench, unless Pardew can find a role in midfield for the set-piece specialist, or consider dropping established starter Danny Simpson on the right.

Santon could now be set to make his debut for the Magpies in what promises to be a tempestuous affair as Newcastle travel to face QPR and Joey Barton on Monday September 12. The new Italian recruit could, theoretically, be facing Barton one-on-one in that fixture – a factor that may convince Pardew to give Santon more time to settle, persevering with Taylor for one more run-out.

One possible knock-on from Taylor’s relegation to the bench, French midfielder Youha Cabaye, who has made an encouraging start to his career at St James’, could now be set for a more prominent role at set-pieces and in particular, direct free-kicks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Since playing my WC I cant stop tinkering with my team. How does it look? I went for cheaper defenders to squeeze Adam in, I think hes started well for Liverpool.

    Given - Vorm

    R Taylor - Bosingwa - Enrique - De Laet - Brown

    Adam - Nasri - Young - Moses - Ferguson

    Suarez - Rooney - Dzeko

Maybe, but Ive learnt the hard way that form is most important with FF. Ive sat there in dismay as Torres (again) gets 1 point, whilst Rooney, Dzeko, Suarez and co tear it up. Im already over 100 points behind in my minileagues and Id say a lot of those are players who you cant be without right now.

Could you please answer my question:

As far as I am aware, you can only get the benefit out of a player price rise, if It rises by 0.2, then you gain half that value?
    Is that still true?

Because this season I am seeing my bank value increase by 0.1 every time a players value increases?

    Please could you confirm?

    Thanks very much

Your team value will go up every time one of your players rises.

But you won't get the full value of that price rise if you sell the player.

E.G. You buy a player for £5mil. He rises to £5.2 mil. Your team value is now £100.2 mil (everything else being equal).

If you sell him, you will get £5.1 mil for him. If you wanted to buy him back, you would have to pay his full cost of %5.2 mil.

Argh, i really need to decide on Silva or Nasri.

Im on WC and bought Silva for 9.6 which means i need him to go up twice to make a profit...unlikely.

However, Nasri will go up to 9.6 too.

It's either get Nasri in cheap and stick or stick with Silva at an inflated price.

Quick question - is RVP a must for the game v the Swans?

At the moment I am holding off on the wildcard and thinking Torres > Dzeko & Yaya > Nasri; but even in their depths of despair and with the outside chance of 1 or 2 decent replacments being brought in, no Arsenal coverage for gw 4 looks highly risky.

    What do you reckon?

I hail from Swansea so I'm trying to be impartial here (and I have an affiliation for United), but if you can't put 2 or 3 past Swansea with or without a threadbare team, you may as well give up.

I like Neil Taylor at left-back but I fear that Walcott will have a field day 🙁

I'll dig it out, but the speed you mention was an issue, especially if a high line is to be maintained.
The covering for Vermaelen's tactical hiccups came to my mind.

Agreed on the leadership and experience qualities - Jury still out on whether that's a good signing though.

Tor-Kristian Karlsen had this to say, make of it what you want. I think he's often right.

mertesacker: very calm centre-back whose style is based on intelligent positional play; anticipates, reads the game extremely well

so much so that he rarely goes to ground tackling, consequently hardly ever gets booked, just 9 yellow cards in 221 bundesliga games (!)

conceptually mertesacker strikes me a fine match to vermalens more aggressive and dominating style

decent on the ground despite the huge size (198 cm +/-), keeps it simple, knows his own limitations.

mobility (lack of) is obviously a worry, game reading can obviously compesate to a certain extent but very hard to predict how he'll adapt

that said, he's very experienced (73 caps for germany) plus an intelligent guy, great character. werder bremen captain. may well work out.

If we exclude Dann who I believe is a decent player that is a classic case of a promoted club signing a load of players who are not regulars at their current Premiership clubs for a good reason.

Your reason? I'm thinking that Walcott has scored in his last 2 games, has good fixtures and is a nailed on starter and he's the best Arsenal coverage at a reasonable price. Mata is the best attacker Chelsea have and I need coverage there, and he is likely to start most games.

Oh and Moses cos he's dirt cheap and a nailed on and slightly OOP.
