With the transfer window closing tomorrow, today’s Scribbles are something of a rumour-monger’s delight. Plenty of deals are up in the air, others are apparently imminent. The next day or two is going to be manic as the transfers move at breakneck speed and we’ll do all we can to keep you up to date:

Arsene Wenger’s attempts to restructure his Arsenal defence has kicked into overdrive. Armand Traore is off to QPR, with Brazilian left-back Andre Santos on the verge of a transfer to the Emirates. The 28 year old will offer plenty experience at the back and could be followed by Per Mertesacker– according to L’Equipe France, the centre half is on the verge of a deal and may even be confirmed as a Gunners player by tonight. A move for Chelsea’s Alex has also been mooted.

Bolton’s Stuart Holden will make his return to action this evening as Bolton’s reserves play Fulham. The American has been out since March with a knee injury and his influence has been sorely missed in central midfield by Owen Coyle’s side. Holden will offer plenty steel to a Trotters side that have lost the last two games and face a difficult run of fixtures over the next few Gameweeks.

Man City have failed in a bid to bring Mark Van Bommel to the Etihad Stadium. The Dutchman’s agent Mino Raiola explained just why he is a man in demand:

“The message of AC Milan was clear. Mark van Bommel is not for sale under any circumstances. They have the problem that Yaya Toure will spend considerable time out because of the matches for the African Cup. In addition, they also know that Mark van Bommel is excellent alongside Nigel de Jong. Hence they came in again for him.”

Edin Dzeko has thanked his manager for keeping faith in his abilities. The Bosnian was a shadow of his current self upon arriving in Manchester last season and having adapted to the rigours of the Premier League, is reaping the benefits with six goals in his first three games:

I am happy that he kept faith with me because I think that’s the most important thing in football – that the coach and the players around you believe in you. The beginning was hard for me, but I wanted to have a full pre-season with the team. Now I have had that and I know the league better. I feel much stronger than last season.

Reports indicate Carlos Tevez is expected to start City’s next match at home to Wigan. This could scupper the plans of Fantasy managers looking to bring in the likes of Sergio Aguero for the Latics showdown. The reasoning behind this line of thinking is that Aguero will take part in exhibition matches for Argentina that take place in India and Bangladesh, with the latter game just three days before the Wigan fixture. Tevez, on the other hand, has not been selected for international duty. The Wigan game starts a run of seven matches in three weeks for Roberto Mancini’s side, with the threat of rotation hanging over City’s first-team squad.

Bolton and Blackburn are battling it out for Liverpool’s forgotten front man Daivid N’Zog. Steve Kean is desperate for new recruits after a move for Hoffenheim’s Vedad Ibisevic fell through due to a thigh injury.

Harry Redknapp will battle it out with Roy Hodgson for the signature of Owen Hargreaves. Spurs are looking to increase their central midfield options and are willing to offer the ex-Man United man a short-term deal.

Steve Bruce is targeting Freiburg forward Papiss Demba Cisse as he looks to solve Sunderland’s striking problems. The Black Cats have found the net just once in their first three league games and were knocked out of the Carling Cup 1-0 by Brighton. Cisse was one of the top-scorers in last season’s Bundesliga and would cost around £13m.

Chelsea may turn to Raul Meireles if their attempts to buy Luka Modric are snubbed by Spurs. Meireles is currently out with a collarbone problem but, even when fit, has failed to make the Liverpool starting XI this season, falling out of favour after the summer influx of midfielders, and has made two sub appearances so far.

Stoke are looking to snap up new Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku on a season-long loan deal. Andre Villas-Boas is looking for the youngster to gain Premier League experience and with Lukaku likely to play second-fiddle to Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba and Daniel Sturridge this season, a short-term move to the Britannia could be beneficial.

Newcastle are on the verge of signing Inter Milan fill-back Davide Santon. The twenty year old is currently at St James’ Park undergoing a medical as Alan Pardew looks to nail down a replacement for Jose Enrique at left-back. The move certainly limits the potential of Ryan Taylor as a long-term Fantasy option.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Just logged in to find Rooney on 22 pts, credited with the second assist. Absolutely appaling rule. Would give those 3 points back if I could.

Well the big joke is that the bonus system takes into account assist etc in its formula, so late awards of assists ought to have an impact on the EA index for a player, but it invariably doesnt. Pretty sure 3 goals and 2 assists would eclipse Youngs 3 assists and 2 goals!

I can't remember what the Rooney 'assist' was for (too many goals to remember), but what was wrong with the Young assists? Assists don't have to be spectacular to be awarded.

NO WAY. I agree with crap assists, like Bents last week for example, last player to give the ball, even though they dont create the opportunity, but to have the ball kicked to you, and you just stop it. Thats not a pass

I agree though that 1 was a free kick awarded for a foul on him, so thats fair

The little touch and stop changes the angle of shooting, and in the case of the second free kick was enough to wrong-foot Szszeny (I can't spell it). Even if it wasn't for that and was just a bit of fun, it's still an assist as the last dude to touch the ball before the scorer. It doesn't matter if it's a pass or not. A mis-hit shot isn't a pass but it can still be an assist. There's just no argument against it whatsoever.

Like Marknlard said. The second free kick (which Young wasn't fouled for) he was used to wrong foot the keeper. If he wasn't used in the free kick it may not have even been a goal. For that reason I think it's completely right that Young got the assist.

The young assists were assists, how could they not be? He stopped the ball for Rooney. I think they will go down as assists even in the official statistics.

This is just a bogus rule where they essentially credit a player with 3 points for an assist when the player has not been assisting.

1st ashley young goal. Rooney sends in a cross that a defender heads away from inside the box. Young then controls for a while and scroes. The rooney cross even bounces in the penalty area. It's just a skanked clearance.

Oh that one! I do remember now. The ball changes directions by 90 degrees on both touches by the defenders. Ridiculous!

"If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

Was the second deflection in or outside the area?

Rooney passed the ball into the 18 yard box, 2 or 3 Villa players touched the ball (in the penalty box), one of them tried to clear it but it landed at Young's feet, Young scored.

        Textbook assist 😉

Oh absolutely, the Young assists were amusing but nowt wrong with them.

The thing is, under these current rules the home keeper could hoof it upfield, straight to the oppostition keeper. The away keeper then hoofs it back, a home player picks it up on the edge of his own 6 yard box, runs the length of the pitch and scores. Assist to the home keeper!

Young is double covered by the new rules though. He was fouled to win the free kick and he was also the last attacking player to touch the ball before Rooney scored. If anyone is arguing Young's assists they haven't a clue.

i can happily take the game being slow to do things or not being as user friendly as they have no impact on points. this however does have an impact on points and regardless of who you are, who you have etc you surely must be embarrassed by this rule. traore clears the balls, in full control of his clearance (he's just a bit poo so it goes to a man utd player). then there's the issue that the ball was cleared almost straight back to where it came from. embarrassing and trust it to happen to a player who on 19 points doesn't exactly need to benefit from the worst assist in fpl history

It's clear why they've done this. Last year they probably had thousands and thousands of ranting emails that an assist should be given/taken away when there was a deflection, e.g. Bale's dodgy one last year.

It's hard to say one cross deflected a certain amount should be given as an assist, while another deflected slightly more shouldn't (because it's hard to judge exactly how much the ball has deviated away from it's path). So now there are no grey areas.

But it's a shit shit rule. Simple as.

this makes sense and if so it's a shame. it was always up to them whether they gave an assist or not if it deflected and you trusted the conclusion they came to as you knew it had been reviewed.
they must realise all the emails are from kids (either literally or mentally) who want more points for their player, or even worse less points for their rival's player. this is a defeatist kop out. the petrov one too, even if petrov forces carragher into it.

Just to be clear, under the new rule, if a player from the goal scoring team (player X) touches the ball, then every player on the team conceding the goal takes a touch, then someone else from the goal scoring team (player Y) gets the ball again and scores, player X gets an assist?

      WHAAAAAAAT?

The rule doesn't specify how many people can touch the ball for it to still be an assist, how many touches are needed from the defending team or whether they have the ball under control or not.

They had to give the assist to Rooney based on the rule but it needs to be changed as it is ridiculous.

Doesn't matter, wildcard allows unlimited transfers for the two weeks, so even if you get an injury to a new player you can sub them out and change things as many times as you like before the deadline.

tis awful as its not an assists - what FPL should do is award for a key contribution that way you could have 2or 3 players awarded points similar to the farce that is the "bonus" fiasco.

FPL used to have this very rule - like an 'assist the assiter' rule, 3 points for a key contribution. It was completely subjective, fairly random and lasted 1 season before FPL scrapped it.

The EA PPI includes assists/goals. Why do you think all goalscorers are grabbing the points?

Yes but the EA PPI is not based on whether FPL decide to award an assist or not - my understanding is they use their own data.

As far as I understand it the EA could decide something wasn't an assist but the FPL award an assist and vice versa. EA data is based on their measurements not the FPL games.

I'm hoping Mancini gives a bit more indication about the likely line-up for Wigan but at the moment I'm thinking of going
    Roonpig/Suarez/Tevez(C)

0.7% ownership and if he scores once or twice you know that's going to see some major rising.

Well my worst start ever...I hit the WC button yesterday.

I'm going to follow the risers for now and maybe try to change the team after the internationals next week.

    Current team after WC

    Given Vorm
Ward De Laet Bosingwa Taylor Jose Enrique
    Anderson Silva Nasri Young Jarvis
    Dzeko Klasnic Rooney

However, next week I may change some or all of below
    Nasri/Silva -> Adam or Mata
    Anderson -> Walcott
    Jarvis -> Dyer
    Given -> Rudd

Safest thing to do is pick the ones with the worst fixtures, then wait for their opponent's 2 most experienced defenders to pull out last minute, only for their replacements to concede 2 freekicks just outside the area then get sent off ultimately resulting in a penalty. Then reap the rewards

Or pick the one who's playing a team shorn of their 2 best midfielders, with a manager who refuses to spend in the transfer market, and whose holding midfielders keep getting sent off / banned retrospectively. That works, too.

I think you're implying that people bought United players specifically for their home game to Arsenal? I dont think thats right. I think these are people who had them from the start (United fans perhaps), ignoring the fixtures, and then simply capitalised (by captaining rooney/young) when injuries and suspensions struck.

Well done to them. Seriously. I dream of weeks like that! However, it does sting a little that I played the fixtures and got incredibly burned

Why wouldn't you have Rooney from the start? West Brom away and Spurs at home is a nice start for Utd (have you seen Utd's record v Spurs at OT?), and having scored 2 in 2 why sell him for a home game against a weakened Arsenal?

I think you're wrong...Mata will start next game...I'm almost certain of it...did you see what his influence did for the team...Torres had a brilliant moment at goal if not for a great save to stop his header...and Mata crossed it...and that within minutes of coming on...

Wish he was around before the season started...then maybe my Torres pick would have been better...

And don't forget...they need him clicking for UTD so he'll need the minutes with the team to gel properly...

He will get games. I think Malouda is over rated and Mata will easily take his spot. However he still will need bedding in time for the EPL. Take Augero for instance. Both came on against a promoted team, at home, in the last half hour when the opposition was already jaded. Augero still is only finding his feet. Mata will struggle with the pace at first, so to bring him in staraight away is a gamble.

I guess for Torres it was. But it was a somewhat routine header.

No, I would say that the 3rd free kick that was just off target and that glorious lob that came off the post were -PPI enough (for being dtrimental to his teams chance of winning) that Young still got more.

RVP's penalty miss on the other hand was clearly a good shot on target so +PPI and bonus for him. Love it don't ya?

Yes, but if the team you want is any good some of them will probably rise too in the meantime so you end up where you started or worse. Predicting exactly when someone will go up or down this season is proving harder for TFPL to be accurate with so far.

If they go up 0.2 you sell for 0.1 profit.

It certainly opens the game up to more fortuitous assists doesn't it, it means "bad" crosses which get really badly deflected have just as much chance of assisting than "good" crosses.

They added it, rightly or wrongly, to remove the ambiguity for assists which were deflected.

Every single goal scored should have an assist by this logic. If a defender passes it to a teammate but it is intercepted, then the last attacking player to touch will get an assist. Well, thats what it sounds like anyway.

Not if the interceptions/touches are outside the box

If it all happens in the box, then I guess so.

Thats my understanding. If one of the Villa players touched it outside the box before Young got to it, it would be no assist. Theoretically if the Villa defense had hammered up the field to DeGea from their own penalty box, and DeGea ran up the field and scored, it's a Rooney assist. Crazy times but dems the rules.

If it's a pass outside of the penalty area, deflected, then it's not an assist according to the rules, as far as my interpretation goes.

"Assists are awarded to the player from the goal scoring team, who makes the last touch before the goal is scored.

If after this touch, an opposing player touches the ball outside the penalty area altering the intended destination of the ball, then no assist is given, except if this intervention directly results in an own goal."

So if the cross is made within the penalty area, and takes a mean deflection, it can be an assist it seems.

          Deflections are understandable.

What is stupid is the situation described above. One player crosses and the defender intercepts, while inside his box. He then PASSES the ball to a teammate, but an opposition player intercepts that and scores.

How can the original crosser get an assist? The defender intercepts, controls the ball and passes out of his box.

It is a sad day for FPL

8-10 days maybe for players new to the league. But that's going from last season, really no idea. It's a crap shoot that anything works this season.

If people can't log on to the site then nobody's price is going up.
