Arsenal have this afternoon confirmed they have agreed terms with Werder Bremen for the transfer of Per Mertesacker. The deal is rumoured to be in the region of 9 million Euros and is subject to the completion of formal registration processes.

The recent 8-2 defeat at Old Trafford was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back and Arsene Wenger has moved to address the abject defensive display from the likes of Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny by bringing the 6 foot 6, 26 year old Werder Bremen captain to the Emirates…

The Statistics

Mertesacker started off his career at local club Hannover, making 74 appearances across three seasons with 7 goals also coming his way. A standout performance at the 2006 World Cup persuaded Werder Bremen to hand over 5 million Euros for his future endeavours.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength as one of the most experienced, yet still reasonably young, members of the national team with over 70 caps to his name thus far.

Five years at Bremen has seen Mertesacker rack up a further 142 appearances and another 12 goals as his height advantage got him on the end of a number of Marko Marin set-pieces.

The Prospects

Following the shell-shock of last weekend Wenger will be looking to shore up the Arsenal back-line, and pronto. Laurent Koscielny was signed for £10m just last summer but will be expected to fall down the pecking order as the German brings some experience and solidarity to the Gunners. For more info check out the twitter timeline of real-life scout Tor-Kristan Karlsen.

With an expected price of around 6.0 to come in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) he’ll be a risky bandwagon for the early wildcarders but if he can get beyond the springy Thomas Vermaelen and get his lofty bean on the end of some corners and free-kicks, he might just be worth his Fantasy crust.

Okay...the previous post went a bit haywire. Here it is,

    1. Young Dzeko and Rooney..doing this, i take a 4 point hit and lose Mata
    OR
    2. Walcott Bent and Rooney..doing this, i dont take any hit but I still lose Mata.
    Thoughts?
Also, I need to get going in my H2H League..started off badly.

Arteta to Arsenal, interesting move. Looks like Wenger is really going down the experience route.

On Sky Sports News this morning I overheard them saying exciting news for Manchester United fans, but heard nothing since. I guess it was some rubbish about a possible transfer?

Window is just beginning to gather pace and momentum. Any Everton fans who own Leighton Baines? What do you think of the following dilemma:
    Real life
Sell an excellent player in Arteta
    versus
    Fantasy
But should that go through, Baines becomes a bargain at 8 mill...

*Arteta would be good Arsenal coverage too

It's not a question of being dropped though, it's the risk of him (as well as other City FPL targets) being rotated around the CL games, as they have a squad that allows them to rest players whenever they like, especially in the easier games - like Wigan at home.

Coming round to the idea that we'll just have to suck up the inevitable rotation and get on with it. City are looking so good that even if Dzeko only starts 3/4 of the league games, he'll still be a worthwhile investment as he'll score well enough in those games, a la Berbatov last season. It's still a little difficult to include him in my WC team when I fully expect him to be rested against Wigan.

I think Dzeko will play against Wigan and then be on the bench for the champions league.

Aguero will have a bigger trip than Dzeko.

              De Jong Barry
              Milner

It's City's first ever champions league match, at home, against a good Napoli team. If he doesn't field his strongest possible XI i'll be staggered. I'm actually tempted to take out Silva and put in Walcott.

Aye. He'd be a brilliant signing for Chelsea. Torres flanked by Mata and Aj = goals.

I'm guessing no one has been in for him because a) he's supposed to be an arrogant nob and b) he's on 4 squillion pounds a week at City.

He isn't sh*t cheggers, he might have lost some pace but it's more that the current chelsea team + formation doesn't suit him at all. He's not even getting any shots in let alone goals. Mata will help, as will other new signings. No coincidence he had a header on target 5 mins after Mata came on.

I'm new to Total FPL and Fiso Crack The Code...

It seems though that both Nasri and Silva are almost certain to rise tonight. Is this correct?

According to TFPL Vorm and Dzeko will also rise tonight, but FCTC seems to disagree.

So with the information available who do people here see rising tonight?
