Spurs have this afternoon announced the capture of Scott Parker from West Ham in a deal thought to be around £6m.

The move ends Harry Redknapp’s long pursuit of the midfielder and, in light of a current spate of injuries, brings a much-needed tenacity to the club’s midfield area.

Parker, last season’s Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year, handed in a transfer request at Upton Park over the last few days, causing the deal to move closer to completion.

The Statistics

A product of the Lilleshall Academy, Parker’s career kicked off at Charlton in the 1997/98 season. Over the period of seven campaigns, he established himself as a first-team regular, playing 128 games and scoring 9 goals. A move to Chelsea never panned out as planned and after 15 games and 1 goal, Parker headed to St James’ Park.

Two seasons at Newcastle brought 55 games and 4 goals, with Parker’s leadership qualities seeing him captain the Magpies before West Ham came calling. Parker’s time at Upton Park has seen him mature as a player and although he grabbed just 10 goals in 113 league games, last season was his finest- he grabbed 5 goals in 32 games but his inspirational performances were not enough to prevent the Hammers slipping into the Championship.

The Prospects

Parker will surely partner Luka Modric in the centre of Tottenham’s midfield and his move to White Hart Lane will certainly place question marks against the likes of Tom Huddlestone’s first-team starts. Jermaine Jenas also seems surplus to requirement, with a move to Aston Villa on the horizon later on today.

Harry Redknapp is desperate for a fresh injection of new players, with Sunday’s 5-1 home hammering by Man City indicative of a need for new blood. Emmanuel Adebayor has joined from Man City as Redknapp looks to freshen up his misfiring strike force, while a need to address things at the back means the club are also leading the race for Bolton’s Gary Cahill ahead of tonight’s deadline.

Parker was something of a Bonus Points darling last season and his arrival in central midfield could lessen the Fantasy appeal of Luka Modric- the Croatian was also a favourite of the Bonus judges, with a total of 34 last term, and only found the net 3 times in 2010/11. After a bright first forty five minutes at Old Trafford, Spurs have subsequently looked a downbeat side and Redknapp will be hoping Parker’s snap and tenacity in the tackle will address that.

No, but had you bid £40m earlier in the window Spurs may have taken it as a way to start bidding for other players. Not much they can do with it now.

No it's about our ability to replace him. It's one thing letting Jenas go (delighted about that btw) but a player central to our team is a different thing altogether). Berba hopefully taught him a lesson that you either accept it early or say no. Modric going today would've left us with no time to go a find (or convince) a £20m+ player to join us.

nothing to do with Parker. Modric is a proven superb player. You have a strange view if you rate Anderson or Cleverly (at the moment- plenty of time and potential for cleverly) over Modric.

No. No. No. We have a wage cap. Rightly or wrongly we won't pay over £60k per week (or something not far off that). Probably should've said WON'T pay their wages.

Remember, if you pay one player £100k per week then it won't be long before you have half the team knocking on your door asking for the same...

Papering over the cracks is exactly what Arteta is. He's 29, no long term solution, but if he can go back to his form of 18 months ago, he'll be money well spent.

This is a knee-jerk signing (albeit one that may well work out). Arsenal have handled this transfer window terribly and should have long-since secured the signings that they need.

Spurs haven't been much better but we aren't down to playing our under-13s yet (although they might do a better job).

And this is so un-Wenger like. Some people may consider that a good thing following his recent lack of activity but i just worry how keen Wenger really is on these players. Its just not how Arsenal have worked for the last 15 years and, in the main, its a system thats worked bloody well.

of course they have, I agree but he has made an attempt the last few days to be fair. I agree it was a knee jerk but 60-70% of deadline day moves are. Arteta is decent, not brilliant but decent. Nasri was excellent last season but hes had some mediocre days in an arsenal shirt so saying that he is irreplacable by a player like Arteta is nonsense

I know that isnt what you are saying- in fact I dont get what you are saying! sure hes f@cked up but over the last few days I commend him

Why do so many deals go through at the last minute?

    Smacks of desperation.

It gives the selling team no time to find a replacement.

    Where is the logic?

Why aren't these deals done sooner, logically, I would have thought deadline day should be a quiet affair. It never is?!

Parker would help the long term aim of an English spine. Arteta just doesn't fit that so don't know how they can win anything.
