Kenny Dalglish sprung one of the biggest surprises of the August transfer window by bringing Craig Bellamy back to Anfield on a free transfer.

After a summer filled with signings aplenty, Liverpool had moved on the likes of Joe Cole, Christian Poulsen and David N’Gog yesterday as the Liverpool boss freshened up his first-team squad. With the announcement of Raul Meireles’ shock departure to Chelsea late on last night, Dalglish decided to give the controversial Welshman a second chance on Merseyside, awarding him a two-year contract, in what may prove to be a canny piece of business from King Kenny.

Bellamy was clearly delighted by the chance of playing under one of his idols:

I’ve grown up with Kenny Dalglish, now to be signed by him is a massive honour. I get this opportunity again for Liverpool fans to hopefully see a real good side of me on a playing level. I know what I have to do to play in this team, so this should be a good time. I can play on either wing as well, like I did at Manchester City.

The Stats

Liverpool become the Welshman’s tenth club of a well-traveled career which started a decade and a half ago at Norwich, where he spent four seasons scoring 32 goals in 84 league games.

A single season at Coventry followed before Bellamy moved to Tyneside and joined Newcastle, where he partnered Alan Shearer under the tutelage of Sir Bobby Robson. Three and half seasons at St James’ Park saw another 28 league goals scored in 93 games.

Half a season on loan at Celtic with 7 goals in 12 games followed before ex-Wales manager Mark Hughes took him to Blackburn, where he bagged 13 goals in 27 league games.

The next big move saw Bellamy snapped by Rafael Benitez at Liverpool but he only lasted one season, scoring 7 goals in 27 before joining West Ham. An injury-ravaged season and a half saw him play just 24 times scoring 7 goals before Manchester City handed over £14m for his services.

A year and a half in the Citizens saw Bellamy make 40 league appearances picking up 12 goals and 8 assists for his troubles before being ushered out on loan to Cardiff the following season, where he scored 11 and assisted 10 in 35 games. City’s continued investment in big-name alternatives and with rumours of friction between Bellamy and Roberto Mancini, the forward was deemed surplus to requirement.

The Prospects

Bellamy is no longer one of the young bucks and previous injury worries mean he’ll need to be catered for carefully and meticulously by the likes of Raymond Verheije.

That risk is only confounded by the expectation that Bellamy must surely be seen as, at this stage in his career, nothing more than an experienced but highly capable first reserve. Bellamy reportedly had offers from the likes of QPR where he would have been entrusted to lead a new Premier League outfit but whether wages, self-confidence or anything else came into play he chose to return to take part in the revival currently underway at Anfield.

Bellamy has today been priced at 7.5 by FPL captain but with the likes of Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Dirk Kuyt all surely ahead of him – how much he’ll play and/or start will be the great mitigating factor.

Bizarrely my WC team looks like coming down to a choice between Leighton Baines and Carlos Tevez. I KNOW only one makes sense as a long term option but the potential reward of captaining a sub-1% ownership Tevez at home to Wigan will be very hard to resist if he looks like starting.

Is Cleverley more assured of his place than Anderson long term? Carrick and Fletcher would seem to be more Anderson types, no?

Hmm, but aren't Anderson, Carrick and Fletcher more deep playing midfielders whilst Cleverley seems more forward thinking and creative. Thought in the absence of a Schneider type signing, Cleveley might be more assured of his place now?

not sure but simply as he's got a few more years in the side under his belt (i know it's not that simple) i'd have thought anderson was more secure, plus imo he has been the more impressive of the two.

    Adebeyor, De Laet, Baines

    OR

    Suarez, Boswinga, Enrique.

The first way is the only move I think I can make to fit Baines in convincingly. Think he's going to be a must have, but have I hurt my team too much to try and get him there?

Free kicks are the only thing I can see him getting much out of. Crosses need to have someone there to finish them and imo Everton are struggling badly. Clean sheet wise I dont see the return I'd expect for an 8 mil defender. Bonus I can except and peno's. But I don't agree that he's going to be a must have, many other players out there that the funds would be better spent on.

So if I had 8 million to spend on a defender and had all the other mids and forwards I wanted to get then I'd get him but otherwise not until Everton start improving.

Ok I'll concede that I forgot about Cahill 😛 I'm just completely unconvinced by Everton right now so 8 mil for a defender from them is too difficult for me to justify for myself. If they strengthen up, start performing (which they may do later in the year because if I remember correct they usually start slow) I'll reconsider but I'd possibly prefer Cahill.

i dont care if its boring. you dont get points for being imaginative. you get points for players who will score 20 plus a season.

it's harldy a kneejerk because they will be consistant this season.

you stick with your kevin davies, zamora, etc and we will compare at the end of the season

Most one-footed player I've ever seen. He offers us something different though - he's quick, direct and good at exploiting wide areas.

However, he's a bit of a frustration merchant, and I'm not wholly convinced he can ever be a really, really top class player. I think he'll always be an 8/10 at best kinda guy.

Haven't seen all that much of him to be honest, but he seems to fall over the ball more often than Walcott and never seems to make clean contact with the ball. He'll probably get into a lot of good positions because of his pace and directness, but will never really make the most of them.

I don't envy you having to watch him and Walcott blunder around on the wings together every week. Fortunately AvB seems to have already given up on Kalou so I'm not facing the same problem. 😉

If he had an end product he'd be an absolutely brilliant player. Maybe Wenger can coach him into doing it, but looking at Theo, it's unlikely.

Like Walcott, his goals & assists record suggests he has more end product that you're giving him credit for.

That is what I was getting at with the frustration thing - his decision making can be rather erratic.

However, unlike Walcott he doesn't seem to disappear into a full-back's pocket quite so easily.

I've a horrible feeling Sturridge will only get half an hour here or there or cup games. If he does get games a good choice. I go cheap forward from elsewhere and dump Bale for a chelsea mid.

thanks.. but still don't know who is the nail on MF for Chelsea.. but yeah i need coverage from Chelsea.. Since VDV is injured, Bale will be more outstanding (from previous season) .. but currently Tottenham played very bad...

yup i've thoughts on that as well.. think to have a 3 DF from top club (CH, LIV , MU) but i am a big fans of Shawcross since last 2 seasons.. he was a season keeper for my previous team.. so maybe will do Enrique > De Laet/Gabbidon... thanks..

So Davide Santon at 4.5? Any takers? Pretty tempting, but he could end up as Pistone II. Might stick with the safer Steve Taylor.

Thoughts on this set for next gameweek and beyond

    Given (Al Habsi)

Bosingwa, Baines, Enrique, De Laet (Simpson)

    Silva, Arteta, Adam (Formica, Moses)

    Suarez, Rooney (C), Holt

I think there is another set-up I am considering which is:

    Adam, Holt for Dzeko, Jarvis

I am not sure which one is better. My concern about the second option is it commits me to playing three strikers each game week whereas the former gives me options to rotate in the mids and defenders more effectively, my midfield wont be as strong with Jarvis over Adam, plus I am not 100% convinced Dzeko will start every game.

On the other hand can I afford not to have Dzeko?

He played that back line together in training, and has been bigging up the yoof in his pressers. I'd be happy with Richards too tbh, just as long as it's not GJ.

I'm happy with that back four too, RB's still a concern though. Any thoughts on the rest of the team?

Depends on if he plays Carroll (which i bet he does).

            Walcott Parker Lampard Young
            Rooney Carroll

I'd drop Carroll and play Cleverley on current form. 433.

Fabio Capello: "The spirit of Manchester United is different. Those young players have put something different on the pitch."

Sounds like he's loving the new boys!

      Obviously doesn't rate Richards.

Reckon he'll play Young & Rooney together?

        ________Lampard
        Johnson_____________Young
        ________Rooney

After a rubbish start, my balanced team strategy is out the window and I am on a wildcard. Playing around, does this look like a shonky idea?

    Krul/Vorm
    Ward/Simpson/Shotton/Brown/DeLaet
    Silva/Mata/Young/Petrov/Drenthe
    RVP/Dzeko/Suarez

Don't like the cheap defence. I'd lose one of Mata/Young for someone like Jarvis/Brunt/Taarabt and get some better defenders in there.

Mata and Drenthe? One's risky enough; both would be suicide. Also, Shotton only came on as a sub. I wouldn't count on him actually playing that often.

The more I look at it, seems a shoddy team, will probably downgrade Mata to sort the defence.

Drenthe looks the business. Seems like the new Balotelli with his mental antics but on field skills.

Got 1.3 in the bank, tempted to get Moses out and get Cabaye in - anyone think it's worth a 4 point hit though :/?

or take out Sessegnon, but who can i get upto 7.8 that's gonna be of Adam/Young/Nasri standard (ha!)

All my pre-season planning gone out the window. Wild-card gone for this:

    Szczesny (Vorm)
Bosingwa - De Laet - S Taylor (Brown, Ward)
    A Young - Arteta - Nasri - N Dyer (Ferguson)
    Rooney - Suarez - Dzeko

Will the defense be good enough? Am I over-committed to the Manchester clubs? And will I have enough differential through changing captains to really warrant this kind of lineup?

Differential with Rooney Suarez Dzeko lol.

Dyer has Arsenal, WBA & Chelsea next 3 games = 6pts max.

Defence is too risky, could see a lot of 1 or 2 pointers.
