Sunderland have not had the best of starts to the league season. Despite bringing in ten new players during the summer, Steve Bruce’s side have just two points and one goal to show for their endeavours so far. The Black Cats boss therefore moved to address this yesterday by snapping up Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Bruce is no stranger to Bendtner- he has previously taken the player on loan when in charge of Birmingham City and it was there that the big Dane had his most successful season to date. The club’s assistant boss Eric Black also worked with Bendtner at St Andrews and his statement last night certainly suggests he knows exactly how to handle a player famous for his self-belief:

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Nicklas, who is an established Barclays Premier League player now. Nicklas had a big impact on our season at Birmingham when he arrived as a youngster and I’m sure he’ll do the same again. He’s a big, physical lad with a good touch, good movement and he’ll certainly bring something to the party.

I’m sure he’ll be looking to come here and prove to the supporters how good a player he is. He probably has more chance of playing first-team football here, and if he grasps it there’s no reason why he can’t be a top, top player.

The Stats

Born and raised in Denmark but a product of the Arsenal academy from his teenage years, Bendtner had been with Arsenal for seven years until now.

His first true action came in the 2006/07 season when Arsene Wenger loaned him out to Championship side Birmingham City for the season which started to blossom the self-belief that we know all know too well by now.

He has remained at The Emirates ever since and turned out 98 times for the Gunners in the four seasons that followed, scoring 22 goals. Mainly accustomed to being back-up to the likes of Robin Van Persie, the Great Dane made well over half of those appearances from the bench.

The Prospects

Not short on self-confidence, Bendtner will undoubtedly believe that he will be an unprecedented success while with Sunderland.

Priced rather nicely at just 6.4 (cheaper than current striker Asamoah Gyan) in the Fantasy Premier League he will provide a promising option for when Fantasy Managers want to back the Sunderland offense.

Despite all the bluster, he is a talented striker who can play with the ball at his feet as much as in the air. Inconsistency has always been an issue but with the support of the Sunderland midfield he’ll likely be dished up more than a few chances. Fantasy Managers won’t want another Burnley on our hands again.

The move certainly brings Stephane Sessegnon’s role in the Sunderland XI into question. Bruce has been playing him behind Gyan in a 4-4-1-1, but with one goal in their four games in all competitions, a move back to 4-4-2 could be in the manager’s thinking. Such a scenario would certainly dim Sessegnon’s Fantasy appeal as an out-of-position player, with the Black Cats boss playing Bendtner alongside Gyan up front as he looks to boost the Black Cats firepower.

I disagree. I think Hernandez could be quite a unique diferential. Will play in front of Rooney. I'd stick with Nani too.

          I'd prefer Silva to Nasri.

Agree that three poor def could leave a hole. Can you get Woodgate in for Gabbidon?

    My view on Wilcard Teams....

Given Vorm - very good cheap choice who rotate pretty well.

Bosingwa - not guaranteed to start when Luiz is back, so may have to transfer out.
Smalling - Will get a good run of games and could become first choice RB, just make sure you have a sub able to come in.
Enrique - Best defender for price, tough few games coming up though.
Kompany - Season Keeper Full Stop, does well with Bonus points.
Taylor/Simpson/De Laet etc - wont keep up early season form but what do you expect for 4m?

Nasri/Silva - one of these is essential, will get similar amount of games and points return.
Young - Not essential if you have Rooney and tough fixtures ahead.
Mata - Give it 2 weeks for him to bed in then has a nice run of games.
Walcott - Excellent fixtures and has started bright, if you havent got RVP would say he is essential.
Moses/Dyer - Good bench warmers who can rotate.

Rooney - Best player at the moment and will continue to produce the goods but will he outscore RVP for the next 7 GWS?
Dzeko - Bargain but be prepared for him to be rotated for some games, annoyingly the easier ones!
Suarez - Another Bargain, tough next few games but possibly a season keeper.

    Other Options
RVP - Great run of fixtures and if he finds form of last season will be THE must have, but has lost his supply lines so dont expect as much.
Bent - Good fixtures and will score well, just not a likely Captain choice.
Hernandez - will score similary to Rooney but may be rotated with Wellbeck after his impact made so far.
Baines - How often do penaltys occur? Horrid fixtures after next 2 games, Id wait on this one.
Adebayor - Will score well with the supply he will get, goodish fixtures and great differential.
Adam - If you have Suarez dont bother until they have better fixtures and even then I think Downing will score better.

Great analysis. However, i diagree with bosingwa, i think he'll earn a place at rb, i think he's one of the best in the league at the moment.

And baines is great for bonus points as well, he gets lots of crosses and clearances. Also if a cross gets cleared by a defence and the oppisition player collects and scores, the crosser still gets an assist, this rule will aid baines a lot! Personally i think he is almost fixture proof.

      Agree with everything else

However, my concern is EVE's form. Baines highly unlikely to profit much in an out of sorts team. Will keep for 2 games and decide.

burnt toast, toast with butter / or without , toast that isnt quite toast yet and is still bready.

these are the things you have to consider before you take toast ice cream to the masses.... and for that reason... it is with great regret....

What do people think about Boyata at Bolton? I think that he could supplant Knight in a hurry and at 4 mil he has the chance to be one of the best options at the price. His fixtures in the near future are horrible, but by GW 8 and going forward from there it seems that there might be some good value...

If Roque Santa Cruz swapped his good looks for some sort of footballing ability, he would be Bryan Ruiz.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen Santa Cruz around in a while. Maybe he has?

Boselli scored a lot of goals in Argentina. Alvez, Kezman, Huntelaar all scored a lot of goals in the Dutch league. All of them moved to a stronger leagues and failed.

Put it this way, if Agbonlahor moved to Holland, he would score a lot of goals and he is certainly not class.

Taarabt & Walcott or Young and N.Dyer?

I know the former have better fixtures coming up, but I don't know if I can bring myselt to drop Young with the form he's in. I do already have Rooney though, and I probably should get some Arsenal cover.

Thoughts? Have I answered my own question?

      Arsenal's line-up?

      Szczesny
      Sagna;Mertesacker;Vermaelen;Santos or Gibbs
      Song/Wilshere
Walcott or Benayoun; Ramsey or Arteta; Gervinho or Benayoun
      RVP

Arteta very likely to fill the void left by Fabs. Benayoun (initially) looked a good punt at £6.9m; he can also play behind the striker but he's probably competing for a wide berth. Don't see him getting the gametime to warrant FPL interest at present.
