Sunderland have not had the best of starts to the league season. Despite bringing in ten new players during the summer, Steve Bruce’s side have just two points and one goal to show for their endeavours so far. The Black Cats boss therefore moved to address this yesterday by snapping up Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Bruce is no stranger to Bendtner- he has previously taken the player on loan when in charge of Birmingham City and it was there that the big Dane had his most successful season to date. The club’s assistant boss Eric Black also worked with Bendtner at St Andrews and his statement last night certainly suggests he knows exactly how to handle a player famous for his self-belief:

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Nicklas, who is an established Barclays Premier League player now. Nicklas had a big impact on our season at Birmingham when he arrived as a youngster and I’m sure he’ll do the same again. He’s a big, physical lad with a good touch, good movement and he’ll certainly bring something to the party.

I’m sure he’ll be looking to come here and prove to the supporters how good a player he is. He probably has more chance of playing first-team football here, and if he grasps it there’s no reason why he can’t be a top, top player.

The Stats

Born and raised in Denmark but a product of the Arsenal academy from his teenage years, Bendtner had been with Arsenal for seven years until now.

His first true action came in the 2006/07 season when Arsene Wenger loaned him out to Championship side Birmingham City for the season which started to blossom the self-belief that we know all know too well by now.

He has remained at The Emirates ever since and turned out 98 times for the Gunners in the four seasons that followed, scoring 22 goals. Mainly accustomed to being back-up to the likes of Robin Van Persie, the Great Dane made well over half of those appearances from the bench.

The Prospects

Not short on self-confidence, Bendtner will undoubtedly believe that he will be an unprecedented success while with Sunderland.

Priced rather nicely at just 6.4 (cheaper than current striker Asamoah Gyan) in the Fantasy Premier League he will provide a promising option for when Fantasy Managers want to back the Sunderland offense.

Despite all the bluster, he is a talented striker who can play with the ball at his feet as much as in the air. Inconsistency has always been an issue but with the support of the Sunderland midfield he’ll likely be dished up more than a few chances. Fantasy Managers won’t want another Burnley on our hands again.

The move certainly brings Stephane Sessegnon’s role in the Sunderland XI into question. Bruce has been playing him behind Gyan in a 4-4-1-1, but with one goal in their four games in all competitions, a move back to 4-4-2 could be in the manager’s thinking. Such a scenario would certainly dim Sessegnon’s Fantasy appeal as an out-of-position player, with the Black Cats boss playing Bendtner alongside Gyan up front as he looks to boost the Black Cats firepower.

What's with the Arteta love? Petrov got the same goals and one more assist last season, from almost 1000 minutes less game time! And he's 2.5m less.

when i go to the transfers section why does it say i purchased bosingwa for 5.6 when i bought him for 5.5?? can you make profit when selling players once their value rises or is this just a glitch? also says i bought dzeko for 8.6 even though i bought him for 8.5

This is true. I like Walcott... but can the comparison really be made? I'm not sure either way.

He has obvious ability but can he flourish like Henry did?

From personal experience (watching Arsenal torment Blackburn most seasons) i think Theo can make it as a wide man. Not in the traditional sense as (like you say) his crossing is average at best, but as part of a 3 man attack.

It wouldn't make too much sense to go back to 4-4-2 after splashing out £10 million for Arteta.

If Arsenal were going back down that route, Wenger would have bought another wide player instead.

Where do you see Benayoun fitting in MF, if at all? Wengers's going to go with Arteta/Ramsey behind RVP surely, so I suppose he's looking at pinching gametime off Walcott or Gervinho?

Benny-noon can warm a bench just by looking at it.

I'd imagine Wenger will allow him to put that skill to good use.

I'm suffering even more than usual during this international break. I have to admit that the reason is because I haven't played my wildcard.
It seems like most on here certainly have.
I decided to stick to my guns and resist on the basis that I had a free WC for GW2 and the fact that I had planned long and hard to get a decent team that would last me til after GW7 (next int. break) which was my original plan. I also think it's too late to change my mind now as I have missed most of the rises.

I totally understand why people have played it early, a lot of the bandwagons could fly and I fully expect some team values of 102 come next GW. I'll be lucky to get to 100.5.

But I have been resolute and stood firm!

My team is not great at all for GW4 (only 3 at home), but with no points hits I will have GW5 ; 7 at home, GW6 ; 8 at home ; GW7 8 at home ; GW8 WILDCARD BANG.

Too long, I know, sorry I'm bored.

Any other non WCers out there? hold my hand I'm scared.

I'm programmed to just skim over those RMTs now i think.

I was tempted to WC but the fact i have 2 freebies quickly put a stop to that. Better to take a 4 or even 8 point it and make 3/4 changes than WC right now... at least for me

Also keeping tabs on Sturridge, if he starts against UTD in GW5, he's a pretty safe bet for Swansea game. Could be a great differential if AVB follows up on his pre-season quote!

Hahaha. Listen to nothing that he says. Misinformed fool. He was slating Coates and saying Uruguay were so solid at the Copa because of Godin. Bet he felt a tit when he found out Godin was ill and didn't play in that tournament. He has no idea. Ruiz is a good player. I'd say he'll do well.

It's not his criticism of Coates I took exception to. It was his bold claims that Uruguay were dependent on Godin throughout the tournament. The same Godin who didn't play in it.

Where did he make these claims? All I can find him saying is that Coates relied on Lugano, and that he wouldn't have looked so good if he wasn't paired with such a dominating defender, rather he was paired with someone like Godin or Victorino.

Karlsen always comes across as very knowledgeable, so I'd be surprised if he did say what you're accusing him of, and if he did - I'm sure he meant Lugano.

    The Baines dilemma:

A)Kompany, Santos, Bosingwa, Simpson, Taylor(Swa), Petrov

B)Baines, Bosingwa, Brown, Simpson, Taylor(Swa), Petrov

C)Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, Simpson, Brown, Petrov. (1m in the bank to upgrade Petrov, Barkley, Brown or Vorm)

Personally, i like the look of A.

For people who are getting Walcott...

Do you think a home game against Swansea is made for him? Swansea will of course come to Arsenal with the intention of defending and will therefore play very deep and narrow, as all poor teams do. He will rarely if ever get in behind their defence (see his goal against Udinese) and will mostly get time on the wings. Unless of course this mythical 4-4-2 comes into play, which I'm sure won't.

As an Arsenal fan who watches every game, I'm not convinced of him at all. Poor crossing and decision making at times. His finishing has come on leaps and bounds in the last year or two, but doubt how many chances he'll get. RvP on the other hand is involved in everything we do going forwards, well worth the extra 2.9 and I'll be getting him should he emerge from international duty unscathed.

I think it's mostly a matter of being able to accomodate him much more easily than RVP. So for me it's a question of him and Arteta. How do you see Arteta fitting in?

That's fair enough, I've used my WC so will be looking to bring in RvP over Walcott for sure.

Arteta will play at the point of the midfield 3, will be interesting to see. We've desperately lacked creativity from midfield thus far, so could work a treat. I'd rather have him than Walcott to be honest (he'll have some set pieces too), but I wouldn't put either in my team at this stage.

That's interesting. I've WC'd as well but if I get RVP it's going to be at the expense of Rooney, which just seems stupid at this stage.

Generally, Swansea like to knock the ball around a bit. If they fancy defending, they do it around their own back 4.

That should suit Arsenal's pressing quite nicely.

9?!? more like 11 losses I quote "Form was not so strong on the road however – a negative goal difference tales the tale of a season which returned 11 defeats with 31 goals conceded. Clearly while Swansea’s possession football saw them dominate opponents at the Liberty Stadium, they found themselves on the backfoot too often away from home which exposed their defence to pressure and saw them ship goals. The rearguard allowed 11 home teams to score more than once against them."

I'm not convinced. I refuse to believe they'll come to Arsenal with the intention of only defending around their back four. It will be backs to the wall. It happened time and time again last season and was the reason our home form wasn't great.

Swansea may well be poor away from home, but I don't think they'll be so naive as to think they can come to Arsenal and attack.

I would say Nathan Dyer is probably as good as anyone under 5.4m, but he's only 4.5m. Moses at 5.0 may yet spring into life but he hasn't as of yet. Barkley at 5.0m might worth a punt, but perhaps not yet a guaranteed starter and has not delivered the points yet.

Hi folks. Just back from holiday where I eagerly watched Deadline Day! A few thoughts..

Surely with Arteta now gone, that greatly enhances Baines' FPL credentials? He notched 3 baps against Blackburn, and will now be on pens and fks, and Everton are usually pretty solid at the back. Worth the 8mil?

And I see no real appeal in getting Arteta. Sure, he could be a half-decent cheap Arsenal cover, but he rarely finds the net and is generally a bit of a FPL headache. RVP or no Arsenal cover, in my opinion.

    Rant over!

Any must have's from the new signings? On initial reflection Adebayor and Arteta look good value.

I'm not so sure - VDV, Bale, Modric, Lennon were feeding him at Spurs and yet (allowing for rotation) he was far from prolific in front of goal.

I don't rate Pennant, Etherington or Delap anywhere as close to the quality of those Spurs players.

Oh so tempted by a RVP/Dzekp/Adebayor front three... Baines is pure fantasy gold now also.

    Vorm
    Baines/staylor/briggs
    Walcott/silva/young/mpetrov
    RVP/Dzeko/Adebayor
    (rudd/ward/gabad/dyer)

Is how the WC team looks currently...

Yes Baines is gold but but it into perspective, you could get Kompany, Bosingwa and maybe have some money left over.
