Sunderland have not had the best of starts to the league season. Despite bringing in ten new players during the summer, Steve Bruce’s side have just two points and one goal to show for their endeavours so far. The Black Cats boss therefore moved to address this yesterday by snapping up Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Bruce is no stranger to Bendtner- he has previously taken the player on loan when in charge of Birmingham City and it was there that the big Dane had his most successful season to date. The club’s assistant boss Eric Black also worked with Bendtner at St Andrews and his statement last night certainly suggests he knows exactly how to handle a player famous for his self-belief:

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Nicklas, who is an established Barclays Premier League player now. Nicklas had a big impact on our season at Birmingham when he arrived as a youngster and I’m sure he’ll do the same again. He’s a big, physical lad with a good touch, good movement and he’ll certainly bring something to the party.

I’m sure he’ll be looking to come here and prove to the supporters how good a player he is. He probably has more chance of playing first-team football here, and if he grasps it there’s no reason why he can’t be a top, top player.

The Stats

Born and raised in Denmark but a product of the Arsenal academy from his teenage years, Bendtner had been with Arsenal for seven years until now.

His first true action came in the 2006/07 season when Arsene Wenger loaned him out to Championship side Birmingham City for the season which started to blossom the self-belief that we know all know too well by now.

He has remained at The Emirates ever since and turned out 98 times for the Gunners in the four seasons that followed, scoring 22 goals. Mainly accustomed to being back-up to the likes of Robin Van Persie, the Great Dane made well over half of those appearances from the bench.

The Prospects

Not short on self-confidence, Bendtner will undoubtedly believe that he will be an unprecedented success while with Sunderland.

Priced rather nicely at just 6.4 (cheaper than current striker Asamoah Gyan) in the Fantasy Premier League he will provide a promising option for when Fantasy Managers want to back the Sunderland offense.

Despite all the bluster, he is a talented striker who can play with the ball at his feet as much as in the air. Inconsistency has always been an issue but with the support of the Sunderland midfield he’ll likely be dished up more than a few chances. Fantasy Managers won’t want another Burnley on our hands again.

The move certainly brings Stephane Sessegnon’s role in the Sunderland XI into question. Bruce has been playing him behind Gyan in a 4-4-1-1, but with one goal in their four games in all competitions, a move back to 4-4-2 could be in the manager’s thinking. Such a scenario would certainly dim Sessegnon’s Fantasy appeal as an out-of-position player, with the Black Cats boss playing Bendtner alongside Gyan up front as he looks to boost the Black Cats firepower.

I was saying this to a mate who rates him - all well and good dribbling round players and making mazy runs but much like an early Joe Cole - that doesn't score you diddly in FPL. Playing for a "big" club doesn't mean anything either - look at Liverpool's clean sheets over the last six months and they're hardly inspiring.

          that guy is idiot.
Baines have Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea in the nest 5 GW. Everton being poor form. Baines not rising price, you can get him whennever you want.

You have Enrique 5.1 now, sell him 5.0 and buy him later by 5.1 and you lost 0.1. totally idiot with the fixture of Enrique easiler than Baines

I don't see how you can be doing too badly if you've had those players.. particularly if you had Rooney and Dzeko last week.

'Few points' is 108 after hastily assembling a rubbish team before going on holiday, missing GW2 and making the wrong choice of who to bring in for GW3.. ahem.

There's no direct correllation between team value and overall points. The trick is getting players in BEFORE they score lots of points.. hence why you may not be doing so well.

if u want a non playing sub make it a defender imo. ferguson is a waste of an attacking spot. if like most you stick to 3 4 3 or 3 5 2 then ure gonna have to play the same 7 attackers with no room for maneuver cept transfers. likely neccessitating more point hits than wud be required if u had a strong roster u cud shuffle about as fixtures(or is that form?) dictate. in summation: fluck ferguson. get dyer if u need a cheapie

it's a good idea to give new signings a chance to bed in. for every aguero there are a dozen Ali Dias (perhaps a touch hyperbolic. Ali Dia is one of a kind) Baines' next two fixtures are great but afterwards.... if u have a plan for what to do with him and the cash his departure wud free up then go for it. but be very wary. everton are in poor form and just lost their creative fulcrum.

Ferguson is not a waste if you have a good defence and attack meaning you could often play 4-3-3 thus having 2 mids on the bench. Quite happy to rotate a cheap defender and another cheap midfielder. Should also give enough cover for injuries, suspensions etc..

I had Briggs mate, but he'll only be short term until Riise is back.

      I did Aguero->Dzeko
      R Taylor->Kompany.

R Taylor is a bit of a risk now that Newcastle have signed a new left back.
R Taylor is a natural right back who's been playing on the left after Enrique left, so Simpson's spot may come under threat....

I'm way behind aswell.. but the key is a patient approach. Kneejerks tend to end badly since it requires early WC use and/or point hits to set them right.

I'm worried Dzeko will be a prime example. I jerked to get him in before he started rising, easy decision as I cuoldn't get rid of Torres soon enough. But something is telling me his owners are going to be frustrated by rotation come CL season.

no but he gets forward a lot, watched him the last few games... gets a lot of crosses in and generally supports out wide, kyle naughton for norwich also gets forward a lot...could be one to watch for cheaper bosingwa...

    Given (Vom)
    Bosingwa smalling ward (simpson,de leaat)
    Mata Young Arteta silva (dyer)
    Suarez doyle Hernandez

    0.5 in the bank

Strong in midfeild but still fairly balanced i think, slipped behind in the league and want to take it to their faces...haha

Different with the lack of Rooney/Dzeko

Nice midfield, would probably go Holt over Doyle, and Hernandez is a little bit risky at the moment.

yeah, i hear... but with welbeck out hernandez will start, welbecks injury has just helped fergies selection headache.... think he always favored hernandez, but with welbecks form he couldnt drop him, but yeah may look at holt free up another 0.5

if my mid can all grab at least 8 goals each this season ill be laughing, plus all the assist they will hopefully add....

If Carroll doesn't play, will he get assists? (questionable even if Carroll does play)

        Will Liverpool keep clean sheets?

Is he the 'cheap' route into a big club that we all crave, but are we blinded by the 'big club' part and forget that this big club has 3 away games in the next 4?

Out of the new signings, who are the ones people would actually consider? Here are my thoughts:

Metresacker- Cheapest way to get into Arsenals fixtures
Santos- Risky, but has shown in other leagues he has attacking potential...6.5 is a little pricy
Arteta- Pick of the bunch, but is Walcott better for only 1 more?
Ruiz- If you need a differential, could be alright at only 7.0..
Hargreaves- Is he an option at 5.0?
    SWP- If you want.
    Crouch- Could prove a masterstroke..
Adebayor- could flourish with Bale sending in the crosses...at Arsenal he didn't have that sort of winger to prodigies him, at Real last year, he did and he dud well..

SWP 'if you want' doesn't too convincing. QPR now have Barton, SWP and Taarabt in midfield with good fixs so any if those 3 might be an option.

I'm aware of no decent midfield city cover, I would love either nasri or silva but I think making an 8 point hit or using my wildcard just to bring in those players is unnecessary. Baines is back on pens and has 2 games at home and whilst sess hasn't proved a worthy investment yet it's not worth me trading out just yet!

You can improve it by not taking too many risks and pick sure starters

Silva needed in midpark and defence needs cheepening by removing either Bad K or Boswinger.

You can improve by sticking to those that look like they will increas in value. Not much point locking down your team until closer to the deadline.
