Sunderland have not had the best of starts to the league season. Despite bringing in ten new players during the summer, Steve Bruce’s side have just two points and one goal to show for their endeavours so far. The Black Cats boss therefore moved to address this yesterday by snapping up Nicklas Bendtner on a season-long loan.

Bruce is no stranger to Bendtner- he has previously taken the player on loan when in charge of Birmingham City and it was there that the big Dane had his most successful season to date. The club’s assistant boss Eric Black also worked with Bendtner at St Andrews and his statement last night certainly suggests he knows exactly how to handle a player famous for his self-belief:

We’re absolutely delighted to welcome Nicklas, who is an established Barclays Premier League player now. Nicklas had a big impact on our season at Birmingham when he arrived as a youngster and I’m sure he’ll do the same again. He’s a big, physical lad with a good touch, good movement and he’ll certainly bring something to the party.

I’m sure he’ll be looking to come here and prove to the supporters how good a player he is. He probably has more chance of playing first-team football here, and if he grasps it there’s no reason why he can’t be a top, top player.

The Stats

Born and raised in Denmark but a product of the Arsenal academy from his teenage years, Bendtner had been with Arsenal for seven years until now.

His first true action came in the 2006/07 season when Arsene Wenger loaned him out to Championship side Birmingham City for the season which started to blossom the self-belief that we know all know too well by now.

He has remained at The Emirates ever since and turned out 98 times for the Gunners in the four seasons that followed, scoring 22 goals. Mainly accustomed to being back-up to the likes of Robin Van Persie, the Great Dane made well over half of those appearances from the bench.

The Prospects

Not short on self-confidence, Bendtner will undoubtedly believe that he will be an unprecedented success while with Sunderland.

Priced rather nicely at just 6.4 (cheaper than current striker Asamoah Gyan) in the Fantasy Premier League he will provide a promising option for when Fantasy Managers want to back the Sunderland offense.

Despite all the bluster, he is a talented striker who can play with the ball at his feet as much as in the air. Inconsistency has always been an issue but with the support of the Sunderland midfield he’ll likely be dished up more than a few chances. Fantasy Managers won’t want another Burnley on our hands again.

The move certainly brings Stephane Sessegnon’s role in the Sunderland XI into question. Bruce has been playing him behind Gyan in a 4-4-1-1, but with one goal in their four games in all competitions, a move back to 4-4-2 could be in the manager’s thinking. Such a scenario would certainly dim Sessegnon’s Fantasy appeal as an out-of-position player, with the Black Cats boss playing Bendtner alongside Gyan up front as he looks to boost the Black Cats firepower.

I've got a dilemma where I really need to get rid of Senderos and probably Hilario too but I don't want to use my WC just yet. Do you think my team is strong enough to cope next few weeks? Already used my 2 free transfers.

    Given (Hilario)

Senderos (in case he starts) Lescott Bosingwa Warnock R Johnson

    Brunt Dempsey (Sessegnon) (Sinclair) (Watson)

    Bent Rooney Dzeko

sorry mate, gotta disagree here. The statistics show that I got green arrows 7 times out of 9 weeks in which I took 8 pt hits last season, with most of thse weeks being 60+ pt weeks

Statistic shows in your case, but in most of cases that is not true. And u r considering only one GW, what about the others? There needs more analyzes to be done. And I am convinced that u've made those hits for the plenty of doubles last year and when the snow was in place. Picking player who will play one more game. So it was 2pt hit I can imagine.

In this case 8 point hits rarely pays off!!!

          Cheers,

Ah but I was away for the snow week which was why, as with everyone else, I did craply. No hits there. I can assure you that no more than half of those 8pt hits were for DGWs, I cant remember off the top of my head but probably only 3 or 4 of them and at least one went pear-shaped (Zigic, bah). But I do take your point that what works for me may not work for you.

You see, the thing is I am Chinese and 8 is the chinese lcky number whereas 4 is a bad number so I tend to go for the 8pters when possible 😀 and it does work!

I agree, I took numerous 8 point hits last year, around 65 transfer in total. I wouldn't have finished as high up without doing these

A 28 point hit can work out. As long as you know what needs to happen for the hit to be a success it doesn't matter. But far too often, hits are the result of panicky bandwagon chasing, that's why they get a bad rep.

All depends really. If you can't play 11 players then of course there's more chance of it working out for you but if you transfer out a playing who would still play you need more points to justify it.

There's no hard and fast rule - you just have to work out how many points you need to actually make a profit (points-wise) and work out if the new combo is likely to score more over (and not just over 1 GW!)

    Hi guys

I have 0.5 in the bank and one free transfer.

I want to sell Nzogbia (7.5) and buy Arteta (8.0).

Nzogbia is due to fall in price and Arteta is protected.

None of them plays the international games but Arteta could well injure himself while having breakfast.

Would you do the trade TODAY? If Nzogbia goes down, I will have to sell another player and my team is fine otherwise.

What do you guys recommend? TRADE or NO TRADE?

RVP, Crouch and Cahill is a better option. RVP is a proven goalscorer and has a nice run of games, Crouch will undoubtably suit Stokes style of play and I think he have a debut to remember, and cahill will be one of evertons key players now Artetas gone.

If Bent is injured for longer than expected then I can afford to do him to RVP instead.

I just can't bring myself to get any City offensive players or any other Arsenal player other than RVP just yet.

          Yes.

So you take a 4pt hit...2pts is pretty much the minimum return that you can expect from the other 2, so you need at least 6 from your new player just to break even.

Mata isn't a nailed on starter and has a tricky away trip to Sunderland.

Walcott is very unpredictable and could also be dragged off after 70mins.

Unless your new player is going to be a decent captain for you this week or you're doing it to free up money for another transfer, it's really not worth the hit at all.

Sessegnon has been Sunderland's most creative player this season according to Sunderland fans I've spoken to.

If anyone is to be dropped it will be Gyan and at worst, Sess will slot into midfield where he's still dangerous.

Right I just played my Wildcard, what do you think?

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Cahill, Simpson, Bardsley
    Young, Nasri, Arteta, Dyer, Moses
    Rooney, Dzeko, Klasnic

I think that's just about every bandwagon about a week too late.

Bardsley over Brown? Hit yourself in the face with a crowbar as punishment Soop!

Not sure what the point of G Cahill is with their fixtures, there's a huge hole in your midfield with both Dyer and Moses, and agree with Adz on Klasnic.

Klasnic - rather get Holt and free up some value, I'd be worried about gametime with Ngog coming.
      Brown over Bardsley
Not a big Cahill fan, I'd rather have Enrique or even Hutton if he looks like a starter.

The money you're saving from not having Suarez as well in that front three does nice things for your midfield, but I can't drop Suarez.

      That's about it from myside.

    My current team is:

    Foster Given
Alex Smalling De Laet Simpson Kompany
    Ramsay Silva Young Moses N’Zog
    A Johnson Torres Suarez

I have a wildcard team set up right now of:

    Foster Given
Jose Enrique Smalling De Laet N Taylor Santon
    Mata Silva Arteta N’Zog Moses
    Rooney N’Gog Suarez

Obviously i would wait until after the Internationals but am I just being too knee-jerk and don’t need to make as many transfers now and could do it over the next few weeks?

Could I just get an overall opinion do I

    A) WC it
    B) Leave the WC and make 2 probably 3 changes?

I haven’t been on since deadline day, few things to wonder about:

    1) Was looking at getting Ramsey but I guess it is wise to stay away from him now with Wilshere back shortly (latest tweet), Arteta and Benayoun joining. Would like to take a punt on Benayoun but can’t see him playing all the time. Still puzzles me why Chelsea would loan someone to a side they will be competing heavily against. For me, both Manc clubs look nailed on for a top 4 finish then there will be a scrap for the remaining spots. If Yossi scores 7 or 8 goals and Arsenal finish in the top 3 and get automatic qualification ahead of Chelsea, that just screams of idiocy on the blues part to me.

    2) How many teams are going to try and steal Gary Cahill in January? He is worth signing just for the knockdown price and then selling on!

    3) Was annoyed Arteta went from a selfish perspective with Baines missing out on a pen last weekend because of him, but it was the right move for him considering he is 29 and wants Champs League footy. Plus Everton need the money. Baines was looking way too expensive for someone not taking peno’s as Everton look pretty awful at present. Even though he is back on them now I’m still not sure on him. Everton look atrocious, the fact that even Blackburn should have beaten them says a lot. Now they have lost a creative spark in Arteta I can’t see how they’ll be scoring too many goals – And they will surely concede if they carry on as they are.

Henderson off the back of last night? He's come along leaps and bounds hasn't he. Don't want to sound negative but this team is very poor. No offence. Keepers are good. Ferdinand (Anton) is in an unassure defence and there's better value at his price. Rio is injured. Gibbs is a rotation risk with Andre Santos. Ireland doesn't start most games. Kuyt is a rotation risk with Henderson and the returning Gerrard. Downing or Adam better Liverpool coverage for the price. Or Young at Utd. You need a heavy hitter a la Suarez or Rooney up front. Your also desperately short of Man City coverage.

Well you look like a bit of an idiot, obviously he doesn't need your help with a joke side as it clearly isn't his

Maybe so, but how am I to know whether he knows much about football or not? And sarcasm is easily detectable in the written word. Some of the players are ok and got big scores last season, so It's understandable that this could have been a poor, if legitimate attempt.

Leave him. He obviously doesn't know the ABC of football.

lol all, didn't mean to raise any hostility, as it was clearly another 'letter' team.

Thanks Rush, if i had been serious your advice would have been very helpful
