Stoke City last night completed a deal to bring Tottenham and England striker Peter Crouch to the Britannia in an “at the death” move that smashed the club’s transfer record. Crouch signed a four-year contract with the Potters paying £10 million for his services.

Often acknowledged as Harry Redknapp’s “plan B”, the Spurs boss could not offer Crouch reassurance of a starting role following the recent acquisiton of Emmanuel Adebayor on loan from Man City. As a result, Redknapp somewhat begrudgingly allowed Crouch to leave White Hart Lane.

Tottenham’s loss is Stoke’s gain and Tony Pulis will welcome a player who seems tailor-made for his outfit – a target man who will lend his height to their set-piece orientated tactics, whilst offering enough quality on the deck to foster the talents of Stoke’s wide men. Crouch was Stoke’s number one transfer target and Pulis is in doubt on what he brings to his side…

“Peter has an excellent goalscoring record at the highest level. His goals-per-games ratio for England is remarkable and he scored seven goals in 10 Champions League games for Tottenham last season which gives you an idea of his pedigree.”

Crouch joins former Spurs team-mate Wilson Palacios at the club, the Honduran midfielder also completed his move to Potteries this evening, signing a four-year deal. A third signing, Birmingham’s Cameron Jerome was also finalised before the deadline as Pulis reinforced his squad ahead of a taxing Europa League campaign.

The Stats

With a career spanning a wide array of clubs, Peter Crouch got his first break at QPR in 2000, bagging 10 goals in his first full season before moving to Portsmouth where his career and output flourished further. Eighteen goals in 24 starts for the Championship club saw Crouch earn interest from Aston Villa and his passage back to the Premier League was sealed with a £5 million move to the Midlands in 2002.

In two seasons at Villa, Crouch made just 37 appearances, scoring 6 goals, before moving on loan to Norwich and eventually on to Southampton in a permanent deal. Once again, having gained an assured starting role, Crouch showed his worth – 12 goals in 27 games in his debut season wasn’t enough to save the Saints from relegation but tempted Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to shell out £7million to bring him to Anfield in 2005. A tumultuous three season spell on Merseyside saw Crouch fetch 19 goals in 85 league appearances as, once again, Crouch suffered from patchy form and irregular starts.

Having signed him at Southampton, Harry Redknapp then came calling for a second time as Crouch moved back to Portsmouth in 2008 for two seasons, fetching 19 goals in 76 league games. Redknapp, having moved to Spurs, then returned for Crouch again, taking him to White Hart Lane where he notched another 12 goals in 57 appearances.

The Prospects

Crouch is surely set to benefit from Stoke’s long established style of play. Along with Kenwyne Jones, he will be a prime target for the service provided by Jermaine Pennant and Matt Etherington from out wide, while Rory Delap will also be looking to exploit his height from his sling-shot throw-ins.

Crouch commands a relatively hefty Fantasy Premier League price-tag (6.9) which is unlikely to encourage investment. In addition, with fellow new signing Jerome joining the ranks, and with Europa League trips to the Ukraine, Turkey and Israel on the cards, it’s clear that rotation in the attacking positions will take place. Recent “Out of Position” candidate Jon Walters, looked good value to this point but, with increased options up front, Walters’ starting role is now under threat and, across the board, the lineup in the Stoke attack now looks uncertain.

As Pulis’ top transfer target, Crouch would seem the most likely to sustain a run of starts and Fantasy managers will be keen observers on his progress as he settles in his new surroundings.

    1)
    Vorm Ruddy
Enrique Simpson Delaet Gabbidon Taylor (SWA)
    Arteta Young Nasri Adam Dyer
    Suarez Dzeko ROONEY

    2)
    Vorm Ruddy
Enrique Delaet TAYLOR R CAULKER BOSINGWA

    Suarez Dzeko ROONEY

    3)
    Vorm GIVEN
Enrique Delaet TAYLOR R CAULKER BOSINGWA
    ANDERSON Young Nasri Adam WALCOTT
    Suarez Dzeko LONG

Please help me with the decision.

There is still over a week until the next deadline, during which time most players are playing 2 internationals.

RMT or discussing possible transfers at this stage is almost pointless. Especially posting 3 teams and expecting people to dissect each one.

I completely agree with you, but the above team is 101.3 mill and if I'm lucky and noone gets injured I would have this team with the current price tag ; )

If any of the priced sink or raise only one team would be available.

Ruiz at 7M on FPL is a great price. It's just a shame that most people (including me) are going for three big hitters up front so are looking for good value in midfield. There's a lack of quality mid/low-price options in that area.

Im unsure on the 3 big hitters upfront. Look at the value goalscorers there are upfront, Dzeko, Suarez, Adebayor. This would allow you to get 3 of Young, Nasri/Silva, Walcott, Mata etc.. in easily. Very tempted.

My current thoughts on a few decisions floating around:

Jarvis vs Brunt = Jarvis... just, because I think he'll be better longer term. Both is always an option though.

Walcott vs Arteta = Walcott if you can afford the 9.0, but Arteta if it would wreck your plans to spend the extra 1.0m. With one of these you could then get away without RVP. I think both, baring in mind how Arsenal have been recently, is possibly OTT.

Nasri or Silva = Silva. I think it's either between Silva + Dzeko or Silva + Aguero, going off how they play. IMO you're more likely to be covered with City goals if you have one of these pairings.

      surely you've just contradicted yourself.

he's moved to Arsenal EXACTLY because they are a big club, he's moved for champions league football, to have a higher chance of winning something, to play with better players and to prove himself on the biggest stage. none of which he could achieve everton (small club). how much he's paid for the privilege doesn't factor in. being rich doesn't make you a big club, see, QPR, Crawley Town.

So I've bought Parker, Adebayor, Hutton and Mertesacker. Thinking Hutton is the weakest link there, might go back to Warnock.

Hutton offers more attacking threat then Warnock. If Hutton starts, it's a good move.

Parker is the weakest link there. Good player in real life but not a fantasy player.

WC team: Going for a different approach, no big hitters upfront!

    Given Vorm
Santos Kompany Bosingwa Simpson De Laet
    Walcott Nasri Young Barkley Petrov
    Suarez Dzeko Adebayor

Could work, it will just require some brave captain choices.

some are convinced he'll be on penalties, don't think it's as simple as that with Saha likely to be fully fit by the end of the break.

Not worth it for 2 good fixtures before having to sell him when their horrid fixtures come around.

I was thinking this. But Villa will be a tight game, so it's really just one good fixture. I might go without.

I think you'll find yourself wanting an expensive forward pretty rapidly, otherwise very nice.

A bit left field: seeing as Vorm looks like the cheap keeper of choice but rotates badly with Given, maybe save 0.5 and go with him and Kenny from a revitalised QPR?

On the subject of Swansea defenders, I think Taylor should be in there instead of De Laet, regardless of doubling up with Vorm.

Vorm was Ruddy. Just got Vorm for now to hopefully catch a price rise which doesn't look likely. Yeah i haven't really thought about the 4.0 defender, i'll have a look at Taylor. I'll probably play Kompany, Bosingwa and Santos everyweek anyway.

Yeah it is a risk going without Rooney/RVP but will Adebayor really score that many less goals? He will get good supply. Suarez is undervalued and Dzeko is on form.

On the evidence so far - Gareth Barry, snip at 7.0 mill. I suspect he might be on peno's also.

Mancini will never play Barry over De Jong and Toure... Toure is being forced deep until De Jong returns... It's just people trying to be cheap. Only defo starters for City are, Hart, Kompany, Toure, Silva and possibly Dzeko and Nasri.
