One of the biggest surprises of last night’s transfer window was Chelsea’s late announcement that the club had agreed a deal with Liverpool for the services of Raul Meireles.

With many expecting the Luka Modric deal to happen -despite the protestations of Harry Redknapp that the Croatian would be “One million percent staying”- it became apparent as the day progressed that Tottenham were, indeed, unwilling to budge over the sale of their prized playmaker, regardless of the size of their London neighbour’s offer.

Andre Villas-Boas turned to his compatriot, therefore, and the deal, thought to be in the region of £12m, sees the Portuguese midfielder arrive at Stamford Bridge on a four-year contract.

The Stats

A product of the Boavista youth academy, Meireles’ first-team career started off with a two year loan at Portguese second division side Aves, wherein he made 42 appearances and notched just the one goal. He returned to Boavista the following season but failed to score in 29 showings.

A move to FC Porto beckoned and in six years Meireles played 138 times, scoring 15 goals and picking up, amongst other things, four league titles.

An impressive display for Portugal (47 caps, 8 goals) at the 2010 World Cup put Meireles on the radar of more scouts from across the globe but it was Liverpool who got their man for a 13 million Euro fee. This paid dividend in the second half of last year in particular, when he picked up the PFA Fans’ player of the Year award for 5 goals and 6 assists in 29 games.

The Prospects

The Meireles switch is a head-scratcher for a couple of reasons. Liverpool have decided to sell one of the most successful players of what was an otherwise tumultuous campaign and, as pointed out, while Chelsea will be happy to have signed a creative midfielder for a fee much smaller than the £40million reportedly offered for Luka Modric, this is a player that manager Andre Villas-Boas himself agreed to sell from FC Porto just 12 months ago.

Where he actually fits into things at Chelsea is also another conundrum to be solved. Frank Lampard is 33 years of age and in a slow decline but to expect him to drop out suddenly would be verging on foolish. More likely will be to see Meireles afforded, at least for now, either a wider berth in the Chelsea outfit or a first-team slot at the expense of Ramires.

One thing Chelsea have been distinctly lacking in the last few years is a creative forward drive in the middle of the park. Frank Lampard has upped his creativity so far this campaign- a look at our Members Area show the midfielder has doubled the number of goal scoring chances created per game compared to last season- and, alongside the recent signing of Juan Mata, Meireles gives Villas-Boas a further creative option in the key central area.

If given the chance in the Chelsea starting XI, not only may we finally see a glimmer of the old Fernando Torres but, at just 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Fantasy Managers will perhaps be seeing a cost-efficient option from a top team at their disposal sooner rather than later.

    From previous post:

    Current line-up:

Suarez (acquired at 9.5), Dzeko (8.5) and Rooney (12.0)

Anderson is not a good pick IMO
Moses has horrible fixtures and even when he had easy fixtures he did not deliver
I'll choose 1 from Rooney or Young(they wont score plenty goals every week. Wenger played a shambolic team and ManU had to take advantage) Stick with rooney and downgrade young so you can afford RVP

Chasing prices with Anderson, just did Moses -> Dyer (may go up in value and if he does I want the option have got him at 4.5).

Anderson probably not going up again though. Will look at a cheap mid (Petrov is high on my sights).

Still deciding on the double with Young/Rooney - I'm not against doubling up, and as a United fan it was hell watching them kill Arsenal while I had Nani 😛

Here's some advice: List your bench as well.
That way, we can actually advise you on if your choices are good. For example, Vorm away to Arsenal looks an awful choice, but if your other keeper is, lets say, Ruddy, then its the only thing you can do.

Watch out for Simpson, he was supposedly going to Villa yesterday so may be unsettled, and with Santon providing extra defensive options he may not start. I also would not play Watson, away at MC, big no no there. Solid elsewhere.

The defence any GK's will drive you mad. People seem to underestimate how many points good defenders get you.

    Given - Vorm
Bosingwa - Warnock - Enrique - Kompany - De Laet
    Nasri - Walcott - Anderson - Brunt - Dyer
    Rooney - Suarez - Dzeko

Might go Ward instead of Enrique and take 0.6 mil to bank for future transfers.

    For the defence:

    8 mil + 4 mil
    OR
    6 mil + 6 mil

e.g Baines + De Laet or Kompany + Mertesacker.

btw, I really have no interest in getting Mertesacket, its just an example

I think people need to be looking to something that they never looked for before: Arsenal defence.

With the easy fixtures coming up, and also top-class defenders signed, I think picking Szczezny or even Merty or Santos could be a good buy, for both clean sheets and in the case of Santos, scoring opportunities.

    Anyone else feel the same?

We'll soon find out. It's why it might be too early on Arteta too. He could be deep lying with Song to allow Wilshere the creative freedom and energy, in which case 8m is crazy money.

Yeah, i can see him playing a similar role to the one Alonso played at Liverpool. Wilshere has more creativity and should play behind RVP. That's what i would do anyway.

I don't think that Wenger bought German national team player to play Koscielny in front of him. Mertesacker is nailed on as I see it. No way Koscielny will play, when Verm and Mert are healthy.

Got to be the third option hasn't it? Forced to buy Mert cause Kos is below par and Santos must get the nod over Gibbs at this stage.
Mert could be worth a look for his set-piece threat.

Afternoon FFS faithful. I've been doing even more tweaking today and squad is shaping up I think. Had to make some downgrades in defense but is it too weak?

    GK: Krul - Vorm

    DEF: Bosingwa - Hughes - Ward - De Laet - N. Taylor

MID: Arteta - Silva - Mata - Barkley - Brunt

FWD: Rooney - Dzeko - Suarez
