QPR’s squad overhaul following the arrival of new owner Tony Fernandes continued on transfer deadline day with the acquisition of Shaun Wright-Phillips from Manchester City. The winger joins up at Loftus Road on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The Statistics

Having suffered frustration at Chelsea, the return to Man City from Chelsea in 2009 failed to hand Wright-Phillips the opportunity for regular starts that he craved.

The early signs had been encouraging – 27 starts in his first season back brought returns of 5 goals and 5 assists with 16 Fantasy Premier League bonus points. Predictably, however, his starts were cut the following season as City begun bolstering their squad with their newfound millions under Roberto Mancini – the arrival of Adam Johnson, in particular, hindered his progress. Wright-Phillips started 19 matches in 2009/10 but still managed to chip in with 4 goals and 8 assists with 10 bonus thrown in.

Last season, Wright-Phillips found himself limited to Europa Cup and FA Cup appearances and failed to make an impression. There’s no doubt that he desperately needs a run of assured starts and an injury free spell if he is ever to return to the kind of form which brought double figure goal returns in his first spell with City in the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

The Prospects

Wright-Phillips looks a good fit for Rangers. Warnock favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation in the Championship last season and the former City winger would seem well suited to a role in that system on the right flank or in a similar position in a 4-4-2. Joey Barton’s role on the arrival of Wright-Phillips is interesting – presumably he could line up in central midfield rather than find himself deployed on the right. Shaun Derry and Alejandro Faulin are well established in the holding midfield roles but presumably, Barton could take up one of these central positions with Adel Taarabt surely set for the free role behind a lone striker.

Clearly both Barton and Wright-Phillips offer Warnock several options and tactical flexibility. The knock-on effects are that the likes of Tommy Smith and Akos Buzacky now look likely to find themselves restricted to cameo roles as the new broom sweeps through Loftus Road.

In Fantasy terms, Wright-Phillips, along with Barton, will certainly come back onto the radar but Adel Taarabt is surely likely to remain the key target within the Rangers midfield. The price difference between the three midfielders is minimal with Barton currently the cheapest in the pack – Wright-Phillips is available at 6.4 in the Fantasy Premier League game following a recent price drop. Taarabt, at 6.5, still looks the most likely given his set-piece involvement and impressive goal record. Having struck the woodwork twice at Wigan, the signs indicate that returns are imminent.

Taarabt’s influence on Rangers’ attacking play may well be reduced as a result of the new arrivals but arguably the potential for stronger results, form and confidence will only help Taarabt meet the pre-season expectations of those who invested in the Moroccan. Wright-Phillips has a point to prove but whether he can outshine and outperform Taarabt in the new QPR lineup is certainly up for debate.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

          what dont you get?
Argentina are going to India to play two 'exhibition' matches over the intl. break. I am hoping that given they are friendlies Kun might not play 2 x 90 mins (unlike Dzeko who should do given his games are qualifiers).

If he doesnt play much, then comes back to Eastlands looking sharp then Man-Kini might think about starting him at home so fans can see their new man in full.

Sadly, i dont think it's going to happen...which leaves me with an £11m problem.

I probably wouldn't go for both - City aren't going to score a hatful every week. I suppose it depends on who else you have. If you also have Dzeko/Aguero then my opinion would be 'yes' - spread it around a bit, particularly since Arsenal have a nice run coming up.

It was just gona be a bring him in for 1 week and swap him out to Rooney or Rvp.

A few questions about my (a bit generic) WC team:

    Given, Vorm
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Woodgate, Simpson, Taylor(Swa)
    Young, Nasri, Jarvis, Petrov, Moses
    Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko

    1. Do I need Chelsea/Arsenal in midfield, or should I wait and see how the new arrivals settle in?

    2. Not 100% sold on Jarvis, Petrov, Moses. Are there better options for the same price? Should I downgrade a striker to improve here?

    3. Am I right to choose Nasri over Silva?

    4. Is Dzeko a rotation risk around these internationals?

      1. I personally want some Arsenal coverage but, given how relatively few people will have their players, you don't NEED them as such.

      2. Brunt has good fixtures. Wouldn't downgrade necessarily as strikers look to be where the points are, and those three have high ownership.

      3. Toss a coin, I'd probably go Nasri personally as he looked more direct against Spurs.

      4. Possibly, but he's bang in form and Mancini is likely to want to keep momentum going. He's as safe as any of the City front line, possibly more safe than the others.

Please have a look at my team and tell me what you think. Terrible start when I could not finalize my team for week one and league was not reset. Taking "early days" attitude and trying to build a team.

Which of the 'United States Minor Outlying Islands' do you live in 😀

Aguero has a long trip to play in India and Bangladesh, so he could be rested this week, but as you say, you're building for long term. Unless you want to do Aguero to Rooney/RVP, I'd just leave it I think.

If we hear any news that Aguero's likely to be rested, I'd say take the hit - otherwise, leave it.

Personally, I'd go Young, Silva and Nasri, but that's because I'm waiting to see how Arsenal/Chelsea midfield sorts itself out.

This is what I currently have Jammers. I think you're right but I'm sorely tempted by Walcott vs Swansea.
Having said that I can see a 0-0 or 0-1 scoreline!

Shots off target definitely give you minus points. Maybe stray passes, too.

If you got your "dream team" by -12 points hit, would you do it rather than use your wildcard?

Nope because my "dream team" might still to FA and then I'll be 12 points down the bog.

i think i'd take the hit. wildcards are so nice when a huge list of good fixtures come along. but i'm a fixture hore

Your dream team in 3 GW's time will probably look pretty different to your dream team now - we've all already had 2 goes at picking a dream team, and look at how many people are wildcarding! Are you going to take another 12 point hit then?

No I don't, but this week is different because of lot of price rises and tranfer window's closing.

Most people choose their team on the basis of the forthcoming 6GWs (or at least I did). So I'll be sticking with it to get the points rather than taking big hits or wildcards and then crying that the players I had in scored more than the ones I brought in.

Comment ^^ says it perfectly. You will have another dream team again next week.

I have 2 free transfers and the only way I can get Theo in is if I downgrade one of Baines or Aguero. I'm thinking if i should get Dzeko in for Aguero and upgrade Nzog to Theo. what do you guys think?

aguero sounds likes he will miss the wigan game but don't hold me to it. he is better than dzeko imo as well

but baines is a good one to downgrade. so much scoring potential atm for the top 4 clubs, i'd try to get as much scoring potential as possible.

Can't see Dzeko playing against Wigan at all. Silva is more likely to play since there's plenty of competition in the Spain team and he might not play much during the break?
