Fantasy managers will be reeling from this morning’s news that Leighton Baines has withdrawn from the England squad with a hamstring injury picked up in training.

The FA have released a statement on the matter, saying only:

“Leighton Baines has returned to Everton, having sustained an injury in training on Sunday. Baines has been ruled out of England’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Wales on Tuesday evening, and is now with his club for further treatment. No replacement has been called into the squad.”

Last season’s top-scoring Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defender must be considered a major doubt for Everton’s weekend fixture at home to Aston Villa, then. With another Goodison showdown the following week against Wigan, his 236K Fantasy owners would have been anticipating some decent returns, particularly with the left-back on set-pieces and penalties in light of Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal.

It’s a tricky one- Baines’ price (8.0) takes up a large chunk of our early-season budgets and there’s certainly no point in having him benched if he proves to be unavailable for those upcoming fixtures. Until the club assess the player and make any official statement, though, it’s a case of “wait and see” right now for his Fantasy owners- the potential is clearly there for Baines is Gameweeks 4 and 5 and to bail out now before any confirmation by David Moyes would be folly.

I'm going to couch a previous question a different way... now pay attention. Would you consider playing 2x £4.5m Mids (which could potentially be rotated for home adv) if that's what it too to get Roonpig and RvP in to the front line together with Dzeko?

Assume my GK/Def situation is not for changing.

So, it would look something like

    Mid = MC + Wolv + MU (+2x £4.5m)

    Att = Roon + Dz + RvP

It could be worth sacrificing 1x Mid to max RvP, then downgrade him or Dz in 2-3 GWs. Hmm... what say you, the thinking populous?

No no no. This is a specific tactic aimed at rotating 3x cheapies to always allow home adv. I appreciate it's not your tactic, but it is one I'm sticking with.

Hence my point about assuming GK/Def not for changing, I'm trying to isolate the point.

But thanks for your input Funky, always helpful.

          the 'MU atrocity' ... teehee

IMO, I'd go for RVP with the cheapies ... you gain a captain choice, a player/team who might respond the way you suggest, and can always shift later on.

          Fortune favors the bold.

I also think Arsenal will respond, and with their run of fixtures/return of suspended players, will produce some serious points. Get in any way you can, I reckon.

QPR mid (4-2-3-1). Derry, Barton, SWP, Smith, Taarabt.

    Best, Smith, Graham, or Martin

Probably .3-.4 million. Bosingwa, Young and Dzeko made the most, while vorm and petrov could make money if they go up a bit more. Definitely not worth wild carding just for the money though. More if you need to change your team.

That number is a false statistic though. The only relevant number is your selling value, i.e. the amount of money you have when you transfer out every player. For me it's only 100.2, but my team value (as soon on FPL) is 101.6.

Not to beat a dead horse, but is the injury an injury, or an *injury* (wink, wink, nudge, nudge)?

What are the chances of a desperate Everton phoning Capello and pleading that their 'foundation' player be rested, especially seeing the decent position of the National team, in order to preserve the PL 'life' of Eve? Or Capello coming to that conclusion himself and just seeing who else he has in the position?

      Just wondering ...

    right, current problem areas:
    1. Baines. Stick or twist? Was going to replace him with Boswinga after next 2 weeks...should i just do it now? (Boswinga about to rise again)
    2. YaYa Toure. Got Aguero up top (annoying given rotation), but would prefer Silva long term over YaYa. I quite like the idea of Arteta given Arsenal's fixtures - so does YaYa to Arteta sound sensible given SWA at home?

      1. I'd twist, maybe wait for further team news but at the same time long term Bos seems the better option
      2. If it involves a points hit then it's not worth it...Yaya could still score big at home to Wigan, long term Arteta probably better but not necessarily this week with uncertainty over where he'll fit in and how deep he'll play
      3. He's an awkward one, not much else at his price so will change your team structure up a bit, but he could still easily get a goal out of nothing so it's not necessarily urgent.

Mancini seems to be ok playing 2 up front this year. I have Dzeko for 2 reasons really. One, he's hard to drop given the form he's in right now (and if that changes, adebayor is a decent option at that price). Second, he's a very different player from Tevez and Aguero, so I'm assuming those 2 are more likely to be rotated with each other.

That being said, there are very few guaranteed starters in the city line up (hart, kompany, yaya and maybe silva being the only ones). Always a risk, but the least risky of the city strikers imo, and the best value at this point.

Yep. A lot of uncertainty and I won't be surprised if he's benched vs. Wigan but for his price when he does play he's incredible value so I think I'm just gonna stick with him for good.

Aguero and Tevez can play on the wings in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Theoretically, Aguero, Tevez, Dzeko, Silva & Nasri could all play in the starting XI. Very, very unlikely though.

Yeah but that one up front is likely going to be dzeko or balotelli. Tevez and Aguero can flank either side of the target man, or sit behind him, and still get the job done. He may eventually be rested but right now he seems pretty safe, is in form, and is seeing massive leaps in price.

Good, I'm hoping he'll score against WBA who aren't in form and could be a great differential, especially if one of Rooney, Suarez or Dzeko doesn't score, as most have all 3. If not, then he is still a great 3rd ST at £5.5M.

Arsenal with an incrediby easy fixture against Swansea at home this coming GW. With RVP having struck nicely against Man U the previous GW, and then have scored 4 goals for the Netherlands, one would assume that he is prime target for a big haul this coming weekend. And who will probably provide many of the assists for those goals? I would assume that it's Arteta.

actually going to drop suarez. as ive seen by many ppl on here he doesnt get big returns and wont score alot.

for the likes of last week against bolton he didnt get no returns. if arsenal was at home to them RVP wud score at least. same with rooney etc.

i rate him very highly and his price is good but think RVP is the man to replace him.

Agreed. He could still score 20 goals and be amazing value BUT, with such clear options in RVP and Rooney and Dzeko as a budget option, there is too much uncertainty around him at this point for my liking. Yet to play 90 minutes, Gerrard coming back into the side, Carroll/Bellamy and a lot of rotation likely, and he's not their main man in the way Rooney and RVP are.

id def say hes their main man but he doesnt play as an out an out striker like carroll so i suppose carroll is the target man who will score the goals. ALTHO he has been awful so far.

I don't think he'll pull many big weeks (15pts plus), but he'll be consistent all season long. One 2 point game does not make him rubbish. I'd back him to get an assist and goal every 2/3 weeks along with some bonus points.

That logic does not hold up when City's bench is worth 100mil+ every week. It's inevitable that someone who cost a lot of money will be benched now and again.

I do think at present he's first choice but if Tevez starts firing again I see them threatening each other's place.

      The latter 3 for me.

RVP, Rooney & Dzeko is what I'm currently going with, but a frontline of Suarez, Adebayor & Dzeko is also tempting me. That would allow a seriously strong midfield and defence also, but it just requires some balls to ignore Rooney (given the form) and RVP (fixtures).

Some times its just not worth knowing things like "Baines injury" Which leads to figuring out all the alternative line ups with the balance of WCds or point hits and then picking the best differential but also most safe option possible before finding out on friday that he is absolutely fine and your team would have been best as it was. Then someone in your minileague who knows little didnt bother changing anything as they never log in, didnt have the headache and somehow managed to VC Tevez who scores a hatrick as Captain Drogba was on the bench and didnt get any minutes.. LOL

Baines injury is quite a big issue though, his next two fixtures are likely to be the bulk of his points over the next 5/6 gameweeks.

And dropping him down frees up so much cash it could work out well.

But as you said, there'll be some Jammy idiot that doesn't listen to the news and captains Aguero in GW1 to hurt all of those of us that pay attention to the news...

Set this WC right at the beginning and caught some nice price rises. Am now wondering if I need to make any changes.

    Given - Vorm
    Kompany - Bosingwa - Woodgate - Simpson - NTaylor
    Young - Nasri - Jarvis - Petrov - Barkley
    Rooney - Suarez - Dzeko

Any suggestions for improvement would be really appreciated! Am thinking my midfield could be improved, but not sure how.

Pretty much in the same boat as you 🙂

Going Schwarzer over Given (better rotation), also Dyer over Barkley.

But overall, as much as I don't want to, I can' see past the Bosingwa, Young, Nasri, Rooney, Suarez, Dzeko axis. Jarvis is another one that I'm going to ride a little while.

        Thanks guys.

I'm tempted by Mata and Arteta in midfield, but can't work out whether that's because they are legitimate fantasy options, or whether I want ARS/CHE coverage for the sake of ARS/CHE coverage.

I also wonder if double Man Utd coverage (Young & Rooney) and double Man City coverage (Nasri & Dzeko) is too much?

Anyone help me clear my thoughts on either issue?

I'm happy with having that double up, reason being it sorts out my Captain option every week (since they rotate perfectly).

Is it possible that FPL overpriced most players barring in mind a very litle % needed for price changes than the years before?

It doesn't matter what prices they arbitrarily generate because we all pay the same.

Of course, it does mean that even though MOST players are the wrong price, they won't be corrected ever, but the game isn't about them.

Knowledgeable, dedicated or smart players will figure out the bargains. That's all this game is about.
