[sbu_large_image] Champions League

With the August transfer window now firmly closed, the thirty-two clubs participating in this season’s Champions League have subsequently entered their official squads to UEFA.

The tournament kicks off on Tuesday September 13 – that’s a week today – and Fantasy managers will be pleased to know they have the option of another game to test their managerial abilities – the UEFA Fantasy Champions League has opened for business, allowing you to consider the merits of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and, of course, Alberto Aquilani for your fifteen-man squads.

This season we will not only be re-opening the Scout League (code: 212-74) for another title tilt but will be setting aside the regular Scout cap and donning a beret, fedora or perhaps even a Ushanka in order to provide coverage of the tournament over the course of this season. Whether it’s the continental glamour tie of Barcelona vs Milan or the perhaps slightly less appealing APOEL vs Zenit, every game will get some level of mention with player picks thrown in as we go.

Keep your eyes peeled across these here pages in the days to come for more information, then, but for now, let us begin tinkering with our new squads and relish the joys of being able to line up Wayne Rooney and co alongside our favourite players from La Liga, the Bundesliga and beyond.

    Sooo Ireland!

If we beat Armenia at home and Andorra away that gives us 21 points and guarantees us 2nd place at least.

Russia are on 17 so if they lose to Slovakia away we're good 😀
Hopefully that Armenia spanking will get Slovakia's sh!t together.

Based on today's games, we shouldn't lose to Slovakia but knowing the mentality of the players and the experience of last years I wouldn't bet a penny that Russia won't lose.
However, beware of Armenia 😉 they looked decent during the whole campaign and today's result was absolutely incredible, could be another surprise in Ireland

No can do I'm afraid. I think it's one of the most spurious bandwagons ever.

      Szczesny
      Sagna Koscielny Mertesacker Santos
      Benayoun Ramsey Frimpong Arteta
      Park RVP

      Would be fun. But probably:

      Szczesny
      Sagna Koscielny Mertesacker Santos
      Ramsey Frimpong
      Walcott Arteta Arshavin
      RVP

Add Song, Wilshere and Gervinho to that lot and you have 11 midfielders with a real chance of making one of 4/5 spaces

I've got a lot of love for Walcott, very much Wenger's man too, but Benayoun and Arteta are similar level of quality and Park has the no9 shirt, if that means anything at all.

Basically, the masterplan is unclear and we could be due a surprise or two in the coming weeks.

Benayoun is only experienced back-up, surely?

And Park was only bought because we were loaning Bendtner out. I don't think Wenger would have bothered with him otherwise.

I guess the front 6 is theoretically something like:

            Song(Frimpong) Arteta(Ramsey) Wilshere(Rosicky)
            Walcott(Benayoun) RVP(Chamakh) Arshavin/Gervinho(Park)

Always playing two at the back of course meanse you have to play Shaq, Erik and Sol every matchday.

I think the format rewards strength in depth even more than FPL because of added rotation factor and also you have manager subs as an option between games...

Nah, manager subs - you can take out low scoring players (like keepers who concede) and bring on players from your bench in the hope they do better...

No, in UCL you can make substitutions after the first day so better have a GK who plays on Tuesday & another who plays on Wednesday

Ah ok - then you're in a good place.

I'm not - wildcard activated at the beginning of this gameweek, and hopefully I don't screw it up now.

                  So far I have:

                  Schwarzer/Vorm
                  Kompany/Bosingwa/Ward/Olsson/de Laet
                  Nasri/Young/Petrov/Jarvis/?
                  Rooney/Suarez/?

The question marks are currently Dyer/Dzeko, but I'm thinking of going Brunt/Adebayor, or even more out their Bale/Holt. Thoughts if you don't mind?

Hmm, so you wildcarded at the beginning of the week?

I assume your 3rd striker is Dzeko, as you want to get the rises for him, before deciding whether you want him for your wildcard team.

I think you should keep Dzeko. I'd prefer Walcott to Nasri as Arsenal have better fixtures than City, and i can see him scoring well. Don't see him being a rotation threat for a while yet either.

Tottenham have tricky fixtures. I'm personally avoiding them until gameweek 8. Adebayor shouldn't rise that much, so you're safe in that regard.

I like Brunt and think, if you could, you should try and squeeze him in somehow. Maybe downgrading Kompany?

I've looked at all the options without Kompany, and they're not good. The best I can think of is Enrique or Hutton, but they don't do as well.

City's fixtures are damn nice over the next 5 weeks, so I wouldn't say they're that much worse off than Arsenal - i.e. I'm not too worried about having Arsenal coverage compared to City, although if I could fit RvP in, I would.

I could drop Petrov and go Brunt/O'Hara/Dyer in midfield.

            Currently have:

            Krul(Vorm)
            Bosingwa-Enrique-STaylor(Ward-Delaet)
            Walcott-Nasri-Young-Anderson (Dyer)
            Rooney-Adebayor-Dzeko

Could this be improved by replacing STaylor/Anderson/Ward with Mertesacker/Mikel/Brown?

Tried to fit in VP but it imbalanced the team so much.

On a wildcard by the way.

Cheers they do rotate very well.

Can get VP in for Adebayor but it means reshuffling midfield, most likely replacing Walcott and Anderson with possibly Jarvis and Mikel. Could pay off though

Defo one to consider, not sure if it should be at the expense of one of Nasri/Young though. Could do Walcott to Mata and downgrade anderson to some 5.6 mid

This has probably been asked a million times the last week. But, if I make alot of changes and activate my wildcard now is the team then locked and impossible to change without cost? Or is it possible to change it back and forth like in pre-season..??

You can change back and forth to your hearts content.
Might be a bit late in the international break to use the WC, you've missed a lot of price rises (which is a secondary benefit to using it)

No your defence is shit. Complete difference.

Senderos, Alex, VDV and formica need changing. And remember you have 3 subs each week, you should be able to get by without doing a wildcard.

Do you have any transfers left, if so transfer VDV out, in preparation for the start of sorting that defence out. But if not you should be able to ride this week out.

I used my transfer to bring in Dzeko, to make money.

I'm afraid if I don't WC and sort out the defence (Senderos and Alex have fallen out of starting) I will fall lower and lower in my league. Alex have also fallen in price.

And I feel I need Young, Mata or Arteta in mid.

Formica is not that bad I only played him once, gw1 when he scored.

Sinclair has yet to prove a point..

It's not that bad Royal5. VdV, Senderos, Alex (in that order) obviously need to go. Maybe shift them out over a few weeks for one or two hits. It really might be worth your while holding onto WC until GW7.
                  Best of luck anyway

Aha, GW7 is also two weeks shopping! I see.. I'll think about it. It might be smart to wait then.

If I take a 4 point hit to get rid of VDV who would you bring in? It leaves me with 10.4 left..

I'm thinking Arteta (for Arsenal coverage), Mata or Young.

Evening all. I'm gonna take an 8 point hit this week.
WC is reserved for GW7 to 8.
I've done Torres to Suarez and Surman to NDyer already.
I'm going to do Bent to RVP(c) and Moses to Henry.

Henry? Henry? I hear you ask...Wolves good fixtures, nailed on starter and I just know Merry Mike will love the pick.

I just really, really want RVP.

England Capello paid waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much respect to Bale. I appreciated Walcott was "injured" but there was no need to change the system that worked so well. Fair enough Bulgaria weren't great, and neither were England in that match but Milner, Barry and Lampard in a midfield 3 is major MEH.

England are so similar to Arsenal, which is ironic considering the number of arsenal players in the england squad. They have no strength in depth at all. The first XI is good but any injuries and we're screwed. Doesn't help that players like Milner and AJ aren't getting any regular club game time either.

True, but we could have played Parker instead of Milner and Johnson instead of Lampard for a bit more pace about the team and played the same formation as against Bulgaria.

But yeah, strength in depth isn't great.

I was going to draw the Arsenal/England comparison when Marknlard mentioned Chiles' "If Spain had won like this..." comment.

It's an argument a lot of Arsenal fans make about the media, just replace Spain with United.

Similarly, Arsenal are pretty convincing in early parts of the season/competition, but crumble when the going gets tough. Like England.

yeah i didn't get milner there. i'd have played young in behind rooney again and downing and walcott/johnson on the wings. the middle three just all jog forward in a straight line then all jog backwards in a straight line. that's fine defensively but the lack of interchanging made them so blunt going forward.
ashley cole had a bit of a mare at times, largely his own fault but i think you can give bale some credit for that too

As someone said on Twitter earlier, Capello seemed to have taken a step forward on Friday and a step back tonight. Just go with the young'uns I say! Keep Terry and Cole for now but in other positions don't play the old guard.

I don't like Capello's leave it until the last minute to announce the team policy either. Surely it's better to get the starting 11 to work together for at least some length of time, and on that note actually have a regular 11.

When he's gone it won't get any better, 'Arry will be in and we will start with Crouch, Defoe, lennon, Dawson (not that bad), Walker every game.

This current Utd team has a nucleus of english yoof, so it potentially could be very good. Capello doesn't seem to like to give youth a chance though. As Faulk said, if a player is good enough for Utd, then they certainly are good enough for this england team. It's bizarre that Young is currently our best AM when he's been excelling as a LWer for Utd!

Well Wilshere is nailed on now but from the youth that seems to be about it.

In defence I'd have Jones and Smalling centre with Richards RB every game from now. I guess getting rid of Terry as captain is a pretty big upheaval but why not try something new. Nothing else has worked in the past. Those 3 mentioned are the future defence. Left back, not sure for now, I guess Baines but he isn't all that or that much younger than Cole.

Cleverly probably deserved at least a subs role for tonights game, can see him and Wilshere doing well in the centre of midfield, in a 4-3-3.

Bored of the old system and players and would love a major overhaul, just isn't going to happen.

You need at least a few experienced players... Rooney Terry and Cole. If Welbeck was going to play regularly for Utd i'd play him with Rooney for england too just because they'll develop an excellent understanding. Hernandez means he won't play regularly enough though.

Walcott up top eh. Could work with Rooney playing in his Utd position. Rooney can definitely do well up top on his own if he has support. But as shown today he gets frustrated easily when he doesn't get the ball and drops way to deep.

Your formation is great as he would be on the ball a lot more, and seems happy playing that role for United.

I think Gerrard is much more useful with some freedom though, in that formation he or Wilshere or both would have to be careful about going forward.

the front 4 roaming all over the place and confusing the hell out of the opposition. would be walcott and rooney rotating during the game, young swapping between left wing and support striker and downing swapping between right wing and left wing (depending on where walcott was).
walcott's pace can make a mokery of anyone as long as the he has a good player to thread him through. the only doubt is gerrard, ideally a defensive player would be there with all that attack in front of them but if the alternative is barry meh, parker meh or milner meh, then i'd rather have an oop gerrard provided his "i'm in good shape" talk isn't joe cole is as skillfil as messi talk

young and rooney's understanding is enough imo. i'd worry for england if welbeck was in the starting XI before 2012

Theres no incentive for Capello to blood youth, his only concern is getting the best possible team for the Euro's.

Germany showed the way after promoting Ozil, Khedira, Neuer etc from the u21s and they now have Kroos, Gotze and more coming through too. Time for Eng-er-land to follow suit.

Germany promoted players from a U21 championship winning squad. Our U21s didn't make it out the group stage. Just saying

That German u21 team beat our u21 team in the final, actually, and we drew with them in the group stages.

Sorry I meant this years U21 comp for England. Quite surprised by the team of 09 - doesn't seem very strong to me.

I was bitterly disappointed by this years u21 squad. I was convinced they had a good squad and would give Capello something to think about

Experience maybe, but where has that experience seen them get too. Sometimes youth is great because they play with no fear, although playing for England that can't be too easy.

Chemistry wise, not sure we have much anyway. I'm not suggesting a team of 11 total noobs to the team, but integrate a few now.

apart from a worrying custard pants then fall over moment in the first half terry was faultless yet again. smalling still a bit raw imo, a couple more years in the bank then bang. jones however looks ready, i can understand why cahill got the nod as jones has no competitive experience but it's not like cahill is a seasoned international. chuck him in, if his blackburn debut against drogba was anything to go by he can handle it.

Yeah, I appreciate you probably need some older lads in and around the team, to settle the young ones in, so maybe Jones and Terry for now and bring in Smalling later on.

I don't have a problem with Terry, just want to see the side look a little fresher.

there is a worrying lack of alternatives to 'arry if we go english.
the ref today btw was brilliant. didn't have a lot of big decisions to make but all the little "oh no i'm a full back in trouble... DIVE" moments weren't fallen for. as soon as all refs start clamping down on that players will stop doing it

It was precautionary. It was more likely an Arsenal injury than a real one*
