There’s another close-fought tussle atop the Captain Poll this week. Robin Van Persie’s quartet of goals over the break, albeit against the “might” of San Marino, has thrust him forward as the leading candidate. The Fantasy manager’s confidence is no doubt reinforced by the fact that Swansea arrive at the Emirates on Saturday having already suffered a battering on the road via a vibrant Man City performance, although Arsenal will go into the game licking deep Old Trafford wounds; it could get interesting if the Swans can keep them at bay early on.

Van Persie’s substantial attacking threat, bolstered by his set-piece involvement, has him out in front with City’s Edin Dzeko on his tail following his own four-goal salvo at Spurs in Gameweek three. The Bosnian will surely retain a starting role this weekend, despite the looming threat of Champions League rotation in the City camp. Roberto Mancini’s side have Wigan in the sights, a side who, believe it or not, have kept things reasonably tight to this point. Can the Latics stem the City tide, conducted by the brilliance of David Silva and a mummified Samir Nasri? It seems unlikely.

Wayne Rooney’s presence in the top rankings also comes as little surprise. Irresistible form, prolonged with a brace in Bulgaria, has him well placed to inflict more damage at the Reebok this weekend as United pitch their rampant attacking football against a Bolton side who looked exposed at Anfield last time out. Goals at both ends look on the cards.

Those three strikers are the clear armband contenders, although midfield master craftsmen David Silva and Mikel Arteta are pushing in fourth and fifth. Their brand of Spanish flair should be given an airing in their home fixtures, and the strong confidence in City and Arsenal victories continues further down the poll as the likes of Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott all figure highly in the current thinking.

Indeed, Luis Suarez, currently ranked tenth, is the only player outside of City, Arsenal and United in the top ten – the Uruguayan has an unenviable trip to the Britannia this weekend, and, having drawn a blank in the win over Bolton last time out, confidence from the Fantasy fraternity appears to have been dented. Notably, Suarez is amongst the most “transferred out” players going into Saturday’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) deadline.

Want an outside bet? Defenders with attacking potential might be the route to follow. Both Jon Arne Riise and Leighton Baines (who is now expected to be available) are simmering outside our top ten but clearly offer returns at both ends of the pitch when Blackburn and Villa visit their home turf.

Plenty to ponder before the deadline bell tolls – be sure to place your vote in this week’s poll via the homepage middle column.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Cahill played for Australia last Friday and went off early with a foor injury, which immediately got iced up. He didn't play against Saudia Arabia on Tuesday too, so I don't think he's there with the fitness. But if he plays, I don't think he'll give you two blanks.

Yeah I'd agree, I took a punt on him the last two games but they just don't look the part. He's been ill so is a bit off pace and with no arteta and Baines a bit of a doubt (unlikely to be 100%), who's going to fire the crosses in for him to get his lovely head on.

Defence is fine but Taylor's probably lost his place so get rid of him either for Simpson or someone in the 4.5 range (S. Taylor/Brown)

Whether you upgrade depends on what you'd do with the extra money in midfield...I quite like the look of Bale as an 8mil option.

I still think Bale is a bit like Modric. A classy player, but always seem to provide 'the assist of the assist'. In saying that, he was doubled teamed last year. Now the hype isn't as high as it was, he might be able to capitalise.

I like Timmy Cahill as a 8.8 midfielder option by the way.

        Cheers! Didn't remember Taylor's predicament.

In mid I'm bit baffled with possibilities. The best point machines are over 9 m and I feel that options are either to take mid-priced player (6-7 m) or doubling the coverage with 'Pool (Downing) or Arsenal (Arteta/Walcott).

Bale might be a good punt, though I don't feel he really is FPL gold.

I guess they aren't going to win 4-0 every week are they? I think I picked Nasri and Silva because I'm not sure who will go well each week. Dzeko is there on form. There isn't much at the 9.2 or less bracket for the strikers. Maybe Adebayor, that's about it.

Plan to switch out either RvP or Roonpig in 2-3 GWs and may shuffle Dzeko, possibly to Suarez and Ade/Sturridge, then boost Pilks, perhaps to Mata enough I've the cash.

This game is much more complex than FPL. Everything counts (a bit like the EA index) in order to achieve a score. Quite crazy also...

I'm still really doubtful about RVP. He might be a nice difference maker (when everyone has Dzeko/Suarez/Rooney front), but in this season he has been mostly bad and in his best only mediocre.

I'm not sure if RVP's general badness is only consequence of Arsenal's greater distress (and so going to improve now, when Arsenal is looking more promising). For example, in Finland-Netherlands -eurogame RVP was quite useless. He did score 4 times against San Marino, but that's more of a testamant about San Marino's shittiness (San Marino has scored 0 times in 9 games and conceded 49 goals).

I'm quite sure that Arsenal will win Swansea & Blackburn, but I'm not yet sure that RVP is back in his usual "scores in every game" -form. For his price, I don't think he has proven enough of his condition in this season. Walcott might be a better punt (with lower price).

Arsenal were crap at the end of last season, but RVP was still banging them in. Think he will come good now.

Keep in mind RVP played O.O.P against Finland and had a few good chances, just failed to finish them off

Arsenal cannot be judge by the aberration of the first matches. I guess things will start to come to place in the next two matches.

I'm thinking the same just now. Don't get me wrong I'd have RVP in my team in an instant if there was an unlimited budget, but as it is the only way I can feasibly fit him in is at the expense of Rooney, which isn't happening I'm afraid.

    Captains: Nani(2), Torres(1), Bent(2)
    Vice captains: Silva(9), Bent(12), Rooney(22)

I'm going for RVP(c) and Dzeko(vc), so if you want a big score, captain Dzeko.

What is the likelihood of Arteta wrestling some set-piece duties of van Pershire?

i think just one of the corners at first, the other question is if he is going to be playing in the hole, or more defensive. I think this is going to determine his real potential fantasy wise. I really want Walcott but Arteta price tag helps me balance my midfield so much better.

I'm in exactly the same boat. I could just about get Walcott, but it means having Ferguson in midfield and a truly abominable defence.

Ideally Ramsey will play the attacking midfield role as that would free up numerous monies
