Alan Pardew bemoans his side’s lack of new signings. Andre Villas-Boas admits he’d have no problem dropping Lampard or Torres, while Roberto Mancini mulls over handing Carlo Tevez a start against Wigan. Kenny Dalglish comes to Andy Carroll’s defence and Kevin Davies promises Man United a rough old time ahead of tomorrow’s clash at the Reebok. Here’s today’s Scribbles, folks:

Didier Drogba is looking to return from concussion in time for next week’s showdown with Man United. The Chelsea forward will miss tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland and the midweek Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen but Andre Villas-Boas said yesterday the club would ”push it to the limit” to ensure the Ivorian is ready for the Old Trafford clash.

Villas-Boas also admitted that, if necessary, he will have no qualms about dropping either Frank Lampard or Fernando Torres. The pair were omitted from their respective international line-ups last week and while the Chelsea boss backed his under-fire pair, he admitted:

The moment when it compromises the running of the team, I think it has to come to an end, which is fair enough.

Man City are reported to be not too overly worried regarding Samir Nasri’s broken finger. The winger is still in line for a start against Wigan tomorrow and although the club have yet to comment on the injury, Nasri tweeted yesterday:

I broke my finger during the last international game, I will let you if I will be able to play Saturday.

Reports today suggest Carlos Tevez is in line for a first-team recall. With Sergio Aguero playing in India and Bangladesh the past week while Tevez stayed at home in Manchester, Roberto Mancini may give Tevez a chance to start against Wigan. City play Napoli in the Champions League on Wednesday and Mancini will want Aguero 100% for that one.

Stuart Holden is edging ever-closer to his Bolton first-team comeback. The midfielder turned out for the reserves on Wednesday and, having also played last week, is clocking up the minutes as he battles back from a knee injury. Owen Coyle is delighted with his progress:

‘It’s great to have him back. I think he has probably been getting a little bit frustrated because he thinks he can click his fingers after being out for six months and get back at the level he was at.It takes time to build up that fitness and your decision-making in a game, but it was great to see him running about with a Bolton Wanderers shirt on, albeit in a reserve game.

Alan Pardew revealed his frustration over his lack of signings in the August transfer window. The Newcastle boss was desperate to add to his options up front but in a statement that is unlikely to go down well with Mike Ashley and co, Pardew said:

“I can only say that, from my point of view, we put the targets in front of the board and then it comes down to financial decisions, and that financial decision didn’t take place.”

Kenny Dalglish defended Andy Carroll yesterday, following criticism from Fabio Capello over the striker’s form and fitness. The Liverpool boss spoke ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Stoke:

I think it is unfair to discuss Andy. Everyone wants to talk about it but we have said what we have had to say. What we have said is very pertinent and very honest. We know the truth. We do not have any problem whatsoever with Andy. We are delighted to have him here and he will be a fantastic asset for us.

Kevin Davies has promised Man United they are in for a battle tomorrow evening as the Trotters play host to Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The forward spoke of his imminent tussle with United new boy Phil Jones and alluded that Bolton intend to target David de Gea’s shaky start to the season, saying:

United at home is one we all look forward to and we fancy our chances against anyone here. I faced Phil Jones at Blackburn last year and he’s a big, strong boy, so I’ll be looking to give him a going over…I’m sure there’ll be a few crosses going in.

    Dzeko and brown

    or

    Ruiz and Kompany

Just not sure about Dzeko, everyones going to have him so if he does well ill be left miles behind, but hes not going to score 4 goals every game and he will be rotated. Is tough to choose!

Lost on bottom of last page...

I see most teams posted are going with Silva rather than Nasri. Any reason for this or is it just because of Nasri’s slight injury doubt until confirmed?

I mean, even wildcard teams where they have free choice seem to be mainly going Silva. Just wondered what the logic was given the 3 assists last game for Nasri and no attacking points for Silva

If you saw the game you'd have seen that Silva had three great shots, two requiring impressive stops from Friedel.

I dodn't see the game - only the stats afterwards. Thanks, that's helpful. Just I haven't seen anyone make a logical comparison between their merits from an FPL point of view, e.g.
            Likelihood of starting PL games
            Form
            Field position
            Threat on goal

Can only speak from a personal point of view, but having already got Silva in my team I have MUCH more pressing transfer requirements elsewhere! Plus, thinking about it, I'd probably keep Silva anyway. I think he'll do very well over the course of the season.

I could be wrong, but I think there was an FFS article on Silva vs Nasri, or the effect that Nasri coming had made.

Yep I'm giving it serious consideration. He has a tough fixture this week, but pretty reasonable after that. Plus it frees up significant monies. Plus he's a quality striker. Plus Steve Bruce and him seem to have a mutual affection society going on. Plus he'll be the main spearhead of the Sunderland attack.

Ah thanks. Guess there's no danger of that this season with Lee's injury.

Anyone else considering ditching Baines? I've had him in as Semi-Midfield player given his set pieces/free kicks/pens but at £8m is he worth it?

      For me, yes.

He is exactly that. An £8m midfielder (reasonable value that by comparision) who'll get added clean sheet points.

I agree....my favoured defence at the mo is Baines - Bos and Kompany... I consider Bos and baines as mids with added clean sheet bonus. That leaves just Kompany who I really expect clean sheets from and consider a defender.

        also gives this excellent formation...

Baines has gone for me. Changing him to a much cheaper player opened up a lot of doors in attack.

he stays with me this week and next, then I agree its time his money was drafted into mid for me. If fit, his good fixtures, free kicks, crosses and penalties will be a mighty purdy addition to my pts tally over the next two weeks

Mertesacker v Kompany, who to choose.

Mert has a greater chance of grabbing a goal as he is a beast where as kompany very rarely goes up for corners, especially if richards plays.

Komapany on the other hand is in the better team with a better defence. Arsenal on the other hand have better fixtures and against swansea this weekend who havent scored yet in 3 games.

Im leaning towards mert because hes a little different and i fancy the gamble.

    Am i crazy??

I've gone Kompany. The clean sheets should counter the occasional goal Mertesacker gets.

        not even a choice

        Kompany every time.

Mertesacker is unproven in the prem and there are massive doubts about his pace oh and he plays for a defensively fragile Arsenal team without Vermaelen!

    Squeaky bum time.

    A) Enrique+Suarez

    OR

    B) Bent+Wes Brown

I've gone for A for most of the week, but looking at liverpool's fixtures for the next couple of games, I'm starting to sway. Away at stoke and spurs doesn't make me think there will be clean sheets, and with kenny defending carroll and telling suarez he needs to take a break, it seems like suarez might be rested or pushed to the wing if he starts with carroll. Also, stoke and spurs are not easy teams to score against away. Thought?

I have bent..takenhim out this week tho as Villa are so defensive. Chelsea will probably score at sunderland so i'd rather chance liverpool.

Hi guys, I'm on a wildcard after a rubbish start. How does this look? Went for Schwarzer over Given as like the rotation with Vorm better, but still have Warnock for Villa cleanies. Was a bit of a drag taking out Suarez but needs must to fit in RVP:

    Schwarzer, Vorm

Bosingwa, Enrique, Warnock, S Taylor, Brown

    Silva, Arteta, Anderson, Petrov, Dyer

    Rooney, RVP (c), Dzeko

    0.3 in bank
