A new Friday afternoon feature, as we look at a handful of the crucial battles ahead of the weekend fixtures that could have a significant bearing on our Fantasy returns. These are the one-to-one duels that could ultimately decide the outcome of matches the Fantasy points tallies of, not just those players involved, but also the attacking and defensive potential offered by their team-mates.

Theo Walcott v Neil Taylor

Brendan Rodgers takes his Swansea side to the Emirates tomorrow wary of an Arsenal backlash. The Gunners will be eager to bounce back from the Old Trafford drubbing in Gameweek 3 and the form of Theo Walcott looks crucial to their chances. As mentioned in yesterday’s Watchlist article, the Arsenal winger has netted three times in four starts for his club and comes into the game in determined mood.

Swansea’s possession play means their defenders see plenty of the ball, with Rodgers’ penchant for attacking football requiring the full-backs to push forward as much as possible. The subsequent gaps left behind are ideal for pace to exploit and with the more lethargic Andrei Arshavin occupying the left wing berth, Walcott’s speed on the opposite flank should pose the visitors’ left-back Neil Taylor plenty problems throughout.

Rodgers showed at the Etihad Stadium against Man City he is willing to stick to his principles and if he continues along the same lines tomorrow, Walcott should play a major part in the game’s outcome.

Ashley Young v Gretar Steinsson

Having lost three goals in each of their last two games, the last thing Bolton need right now is to face a rampant Man United. The 4-0 win at Loftus Road on the opening day of the season is already a distant memory for Owen Coyle, as two back-to-back defeats by Man City and Liverpool leave the Trotters licking their wounds.

Ashley Young is playing at the top of his game right now- the summer signing has wasted little time in cementing his place in the United first-team and is the runaway points-scoring midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with two goals, five assists and three Bonus Points to his name already.

In a similar scenario to last season, United’s left side has proved the more fruitful so far in terms of Fantasy returns. Coming inside onto his right foot, Young has benefited in the same way Nani did last term and looks set to continue in the same vein at the Reebok as he squares up to Gretar Steinsson. Nani will offer a threat on the right- Paul Robinson has been the more attack-minded of the Bolton full-backs and the Portuguese winger will look to exploit any space when he forages forward- but it’s Young, as the form player, who deserves our attention.

Leighton Baines v Chris Herd

Having lost their playmaker and two forwards over the transfer window, Everton will look to regroup as Aston Villa make their way to Goodison. The top-scoring defender in last season’s FPL game, Leighton Baines has even greater Fantasy appeal in light of Mikel Arteta’s departure to Arsenal.

Villa have been defensively solid so far under Alex McLeish – two clean sheets in three games highlights their strength at the back but they’ve also failed to score in two of their fixtures so far. The onus, therefore, is on Big Eck’s back-four to produce the goods.

Baines’ runs down the left flank and delivery from out wide is a crucial aspect of the Toffees game and young Chris Herd (or, indeed, new signing Alan Hutton) will have a tough time keeping him in check. If the visitors are to walk away unscathed, nullifying the danger of Baines will be key to doing so.

Gareth Bale v Richard Stearman

Wolves will approach tomorrow’s home match with Spurs in confident mood. Unbeaten in their first three games and with just one goal conceded, it’s fair to say they could even be considered favourites for the game; Big Mick’s team did, after all, beat last season’s top three at home and drew 3-3 with Harry Redknapp’s side.

With Rafael Van der Vaart once again sidelined with a hamstring strain and Luka Modric looking disillusioned with his failed move to Chelsea, Gareth Bale looks set to be the chief creative threat at Molineux for the visitors.

While Stephen Hunt has impressed on the right wing, there’s a possibility McCarthy may introduce Kevin Foley in order to counter Bale’s threat- his tactics in the second half at Aston Villa saw both Hunt and Matt Jarvis withdrawn for more defensive-minded players and Foley’s presence would aid right-back Richard Stearman, as he comes face-to-face with the Welsh wing wizard.

Bale’s delivery from the flank could be key to his side’s chances of success- with Emmanuel Adebayor set to make his Spurs debut tomorrow, the 8.0 priced FPL forward will be looking to win over the away fans and a goal or two on his first appearance in Tottenham colours could offer Fantasy managers a new mid-price favourite.

They are all good captain options, Dzeko has to be absolutely brimming with confidence at the moment can see his goal streak continuing against Wigan. Walcott could be a great pick if Arsenal can really get at Swansea.

    Repost.
    Evening all,
This is my crapola team for this week -

    Vorm,
    Warnock, Senderos, A Cole
    Cahill, O’Hara, Nasri, Sinclair
    Dzeko (c), Rooney, Suarez
Subs – Hilario, Simpson, Brown, Moses

It goes without saying that I haven’t wildcarded 😀
Senderos will come out next week if he doesn’t start v Blackburn, Hilario will be out in 2 weeks.

    Now….

I fancy some Arsenal coverage for a 4 point hit.
Is Cahill -> Walcott OR Sinclair/O’Hara -> Ramsey my best option?

You'll probably want to hold onto Cahill for the next few weeks so the second option.
Why not play Hilario just in case AVB gives Cech another week off.

What do you think of this team?
    I have wildcarded this GW:

    Krul
    Kompany Bosingwa Mertesacker
    Walcott Silva (C) Cleverley Mata
    Dzeko Holt Rooney (VC)

Subs: Vorm, Barkley, R Taylor, Olsson (WBA)

Alternatively I could upgrade Krul to Given, and go Cleverley/Mata to Young/Dyer, probably benching Dyer and putting Barkley first 11

Because of the doubt over R Taylor it isn't advisable to put him in a wild card team imo, also I would start Barkley before Holt.

I have 8.3 to spend, any suggestions?

I was thinking Zamora since he is healthy, he's dropped down to 6.7 and Fulham have a decent run of fixtures.

I've talked myself in, and out of keeping Lampard. He's been in my team in every fantasy football game I've ever played. Never letting me down. Is he really going to do so much worse than ever this season? He's done well so far, even with Chelsea playing relatively poorly. With him being in just over only 3% of peoples teams, I quite like him as a differential.
Does this make sense, or madness?

All sounds fine, but why double up with Mata then? Choose 1 or the other. Lamps maybe safer until Mata proves his case, but once he does it'll be worth trading down and boosting your MF with the extra cash

    Quick RMT... chezzers in nets!!

    Scezny
    Enrique/baines/staylor
    Walcott/ohara/brunt/taarabt
    RVP/Rooney/dzeko
    (vorm/taylor/delaet/dyer)

This is lunacy. Talk me out of having three gunners, including defencive coverage!

I can see a clean sheet and walcott and RVP picking up points. As long as you have plans to swap them out later gameweeks. Like RVP to suarez. Sorry to disappoint 🙂

Anyone else get the idea that Grandad Lamps is on his way out? I now avoid him like the women avoid Kaz, and watch he'll get 2 pens an assist and 3 Bonus for the 10 tw@ts that Captain him this week

Petrov is only a two week jobby. Benched this week, although may come off for Dzeko, and will obviously then play next week at home to Norwich. He's getting upgraded when I get rid of Baines.

Anyway, looks like 1 it is then.. Cheers gimps.

Some head to head fact about the games this weekend I collected from the guardian website

    • Bolton have won only one of their last 17 league meetings against Sir Alex Ferguson's men
    • Clint Dempsey has scored three times in his last four games against Blackburn Rovers
    • Arsenal have never lost three consecutive home games in the Premier League
    • Sunderland have lost seven of their last eight league games at the Stadium of Light
    • Chelsea have won 12 of the last 13 top-flight meetings between these teams
    • Liverpool have never won a Premier League game at the Britannia Stadium, drawing two and losing one
    • Kenny Dalglish's side have scored in all but one of their last 13 away league games
    • Stoke have failed to score in four of their last six games against Liverpool
    • Aston Villa have kept just one clean sheet in their last 21 away league games
    • David Moyes has never lost to Alex McLeish as a manager, winning one match and drawing four
    • Tim Cahill has scored six top-flight goals in 10 games against the visitors, more than against any other side he has faced

I did fancy a 4 point hit to take him out for Walcott but it just won't be worth it in a million years now.

      3) Arsenal had never lost 8-2 to United either...
      4) And beat us 3-0 at The Bridge last year
      5) We haven't played this Sunderland team yet
      6) This game isn't one of those
      7) Liverpool have never played at the Brit with this team

very confused guys. i have a total of 13m to spend on three guys

    A. given ruddy simpson
    B. Krul Vorm Brown

    C. Krul Vorm hall and use 0.5 to upgrade dyer (4.5) or surman (4.5) in mid to perhaps obertan or Barkley (5)

sort of leaning towards C but am worried about not having given with everyone else having him

    any ideas?

Why worry about Given? It is not like he is going to score 30 points or something? I would go for B and keep the money in your pocket. You might need it for possible price rises.

Anyone know the latest on Saha? Yes, I am an idiot for not having got rid over the international break and he's cost me 0.3mil already. Has 2 decent fixtures ahead though but I'm reading conflicting reports on his fitness. Team News section on here as him fit and expected to start but elsewhere I've read he's struggling...

Kind of feel I should hang on seeing as he's cost me so much but also tempted to just get rid for Ruiz
