The UEFA Fantasy Champions League kicks off this evening and, if you’ve keeping up, you will have noticed that we’ve already published a comprehensive guide to the game that should hopefully be of some help to those Fantasy managers looking for some pointers ahead of the big kick-off.

Those signing up can also join the Scout League (code: 212-74) and then sit back and soak up our first “European Watchlist” ahead of Matchday One.

The following batch of players are our ‘Ones to Watch’ in the next two days of Champions League action…

Yann Sommer of FC Basel is the perfect candidate to kick off our European adventure – a cheap goalkeeper with a good fixture (at home to Romanian champions Oțelul Galați). If you’ve a bigger budget then investing in Petr Cech or Julio Cesar (if Inter can get over their 4-3 thumping by Palermo) wouldn’t go amiss.

Dani Alves is a defender by name but certainly not by nature. Barcelona fielded just one single defender in a tie last month and there’s no reason to expect Pep Guardiola to give the Brazilian anything other than a license to attack Milan this evening.

Ligue 1 offers some reasonable value defenders as Souleymane Diawara travels with Marseilles to Greece to face Olympiakos with the hope of keeping some sheets clean while Mathieu Debuchy will be looking to continue some of his recent goalscoring form for champions Lille.

New Inter Milan manager Gian Gasperini is intent on bringing his 3-4-3 formation to the Nerazzurri. This has opened up the option for some of Inter’s full backs to play “Out of Position” on the flank of the midfield – Yuto Nagatomo (an absolute snip as a 5.0 defender) should do that on Wednesday and become a solid option for it. Unless the rumours circling around Italy this morning are true.

If your knowledge extends to Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, choosing from the tie Plzeň and BATE Borisov could also reap reward – our Jonathan Wilson level knowledge of Eastern European football isn’t there. Yet.

Dortmund’s home tie versus Arsenal will give the hottest young property in Germany a chance to show Arsene Wenger just how good he is in the flesh. This is one match-up we’re very much looking forward to seeing and Mario Götze is a big reason behind our excitement.

Another midfielder reportedly on Arsene Wenger’s late window shopping radar was Eden Hazard. Opponents CSKA are in bad shape and bad form right now and Hazard should cause them all sorts of problems – especially coming off his second half, two-goal performance in St. Etienne this weekend.

Lyon have played seven games in all competitions already this season and, as of yet, have been unable to chalk up a clean sheet. News like this augurs well for an Ajax side that will be welcoming Remi Garde’s outfit to the Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday night. Christian Eriksen is likely to be the key figure behind any such goals and at just 6.0 in price is more than worthy of a healthy amount of backing.

As Andre-Villas Boas’ main signing of the summer, there might be a lot of weight of expectation upon Juan Mata to bring verve to the Chelsea attack. Priced kindly at 8.5 and with a home game against Bayer Leverkusen we imagine he might just use the Champions League stage to woo the Stamford Bridge faithful.

Cypriot champions APOEL are back in the Champions League after just a year away. It’s not them we’re looking at, though; opponents Zenit will be visiting the shorelines of Cyprus tonight and both Danny (midfield) and Aleksandr Kerzhakov (forward) should have a big part to play in any result.

With the ‘higher ups’ missing the fact that Diego Forlan is cup tied, the Inter frontline should choose itself and we’re opting for Diego Milito. With a mellow 8.5 price-tag and back under the stewardship of an old manager (his most prolific season came under Gasperini at Genoa a couple of years back) goals should on the horizon.

With Igor Akinfeev missing through injury the CSKA defence looks more like a lace curtain than one made of iron. Last season’s Ligue 1 winner and top scorer Moussa Sow will be looking to put his name out on the European stage by making the most of this opportunity.

Those scraping the barrel of the budget options could do a lot worse than visiting FC Basel once again for Swiss veteran Alexander Frei who’ll be facing the previously mentioned Romanian champions.

La Liga also has a couple of options that might shine this week. 7.5 for Roberto Soldado visiting FC Genk looks like another value striking option – he’s scored four goals in his two La Liga games already- and that Lionel Messi chap is reported to be pretty good at this football lark too.

Those are the players we’ll be keeping a close eye over the next two evenings. Don’t forget to join the Scout League and remember deadline for entry is 7:30pm (GMT) tonight – Fantasy Managers will likely have eight team sheets at their disposal to help team selection if it takes their fancy, too.

We’ll be back tomorrow morning with our notes from all eight of those fixtures. Here’s hoping for some big talking points.

A team without Messi is madness, tried it for one week last year and it was an awfully tense night waiting for him to do nothing, on pens, and the most dangerous player in the world, easy decision for me.

I managed to get Messi, ronaldo and dzeko in:

      Vermeer (Sanchez)
Nagatomo, Costa (Paulo Jorge, Park, Tonel)
      Valbuena, Hernandez, Eriksen, Young, Moutinho
      Dzeko, Messi, Ronaldo

Currently have Rooney, Suarez, RVP up front and weakish defence, so:
Is it worth 4 pt hit this week to swap?

RVP (good upcoming fixtures but not scoring) & Bosingwa
    for
Odemwingie (good upcoming fixtures and is scoring)& Baines (bad fixtures but good points potential from set pieces/assists/bonuses)

For an 8m defender, I want a decent chance of their bread and butter points (clean sheets). Assists against good teams (which is what Everton are facing after next GW) rely on Everton having good strikers - they have no strikers, although Cahill is a good header of the ball.

I wouldn't touch Baines unless I already had him until GW12/13.

Don't like it. You're hoping for points from Baines for one week and after that it doesn't look good for him. Even if he does assist/score in Evertons bad run there is little clean sheet potential. Odem scored one goal from a defensive blunder and didn't convert a penalty. The players you've got have more potential for the coming weeks and RVP is a captaincy option. Reckon you would end up losing more than the 4point hit.

interesting words from neil warnock after the game last night. he said he'll be surprised if SWP doesn't reach double figures this season, with the way they play and the freedom he'll get.

JU, Taarabt played well very skillful and show great touches and a great array of passing however he kept passing to SWP on the wing who would cross for a striker to miss. I think they will both score highly but if i was on a WC id go SWP.

If anyone is wondering what players to get from the Plzen - Bate fixture, here are few suggestions :

First of all remember that Plzen defeated Kopenhagen 5-1 overall in the playoff round and are in a very good form. All players are insanly cheap, but they are quality players.

If you want different goalkeeper than Yann Sommer, then go for Marek Cech, the cheapest goalie out there (4.0) and will surely start in all games unless he gets injured.

In the back line the biggest goal threat comes from fullbacks Reznik (not a guaranteed start) and Limbersky (very likely to start).

Rajtoral is listed as midfielder, but he in fact plays RB (like Reznik). I'm sure some of you already heard of Horvath, he's a heart and brain of Plzen, he's got all set piece duties including penalties and for 4.0 a perfect filler in my eyes. Doesnt score that many goals from open play but never misses a penalty and last season he even scored from a corner kick. If you want thinner and much faster players you can choose from 3 Chech Rep. internationals - Jiracek, Kolar and Petrzela. Kolar even scored for a national team last weekend, other 2 got their starts as well.

If you even want to add a cheapie to those rare attackers slots, Pilar - a new signing - is our Messi of Chech league and in excellent form. Another one to mention - Bakos - scored a brace this weekend.

Ok thats about it, i dont know much about BATE (after all I am a Chech rep. resident), but i see Plzen winning comfortably this fixture (2-0). Hope i helped at least a bit.

The new BP system is beyond a joke, it penalises players for trying. Obertan last night had " 2 shots, made 1 block and had 1 dribble in the Loftus Road stalemate" and gets 2 points. SWP = nothing.

How can last nights game produce more bonus points than Manchester United’s thrashing of Arsenal? This new system is not fair and is rewarding average players in teams who are not performing.

    Crap FPL, crap

Cheers jamsiep, hows your team looking.

        I am pretty settled on

        Rybka sommer
        Jorge, nagatomo, Ruiz, Diawara, Limersky
        Danny, Erikson, Bastos, Hazard, Gotze
        Messi, Ronaldo, Soldodo

Hopefully the lack of city and united players will not eat me like it has in fpl this year

ok i have narrowed it down to

    A. Shawcross and Warnock

    or

    B. Enrique and S Taylor

option A is good as ryan would be a swap for huth who is 1 mill dearer than ryan and villa are solid so warnock is an upgrade from simpson but i have shay given so it could backfire.

Option B enrique is great price and in a good team , s taylor is doing well but will newcastle remain solid throughout season he does roate well with brown so thats a +

I did notice Taarabt was assisting the potential assister (SWP) yesterday and if it hadn't been 0-0 Taarabt probably would have ended up with 0 BPs.

As a Taarabt owner I guess I'm just mulling over whether he's such as a good purchase with SWP now the more likely to be the last man before the goalscorer.

Of course he's the penalty taker but I see penalties as a nice bonus and can never be expected in any game.

Taarabt did get into some good attacking positions, though, especially towards the end. He's like the really good kid at school that always wants the ball, doesn't like to pass unless it's a great pass and naturally gravitates towards playing up front, whatever his actual position.

Lukaku, Hazard and De Bruyne could be seriously good players by then. Add that to Vermaelen, Verthongen, Kompany, Defour, Witsel and Fellaini and it looks a proper team.

I'll support them this year if Ireland don't qualify for the Euro's. Them or Turkey.

I'm not playing the European one so I'm not much help with player choices.

Quick question though, last year when you finished in 2,536th did you begin to take risks towards the end to catch those above or did you consolidate your position by making sensible choices? Just curious.

I had a balanced team all seson with a good bench. Started the season well, then dropped to 45,000ish before recovering towards the end. I went for the top 1000 in the last few weeks, but made a few errors. I think try not to knee jerk too much, and play calm and sensible. Try to ignore price rises etc as it does you no favours.

having said that I picked my best captain chioce twice all season and left 250 points on the bench. it could have been so much better

          This season...I'm dead!
