This week’s Captain Poll is in full swing, collecting your votes in the middle column of the homepage now.

With over 900 votes already cast, the results are interesting once again. Wayne Rooney’s back-to-back hat-tricks are playing their part, keeping him right up there with Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie, despite the United man facing the Chelsea defence at Old Trafford. Clearly few are backing Andre Villas-Boas’ side to keep the relentless Rooney machine at bay.

Van Persie’s potential is undoubted – a trip to Ewood Park looks promising, even for an Arsenal side struggling to find fluidity and goals this season. The Dutchman does have form however, the midweek strike in Germany another reminder of his quality and with so much faith placed on Rooney and the Man City strikers, Van Persie currently looks an unlikely differential for those willing to take the punt.

City’s attacking assets are hard to ignore of course and, right now, the consistent brilliance of David Silva has carried him to third place in the poll. A trip to Craven Cottage to face a Fulham side that has stuttered out of the blocks and who face Europa League opponents tonight, looks a profitable one for Roberto Mancini’s side. Below Silva, it’s interesting that Edin Dzeko is currently edging team-mate Sergio Aguero in the poll. Both started against Napoli last night and it’s a tough call as to who will drop out to allow a likely recall for Carlos Tevez in Sunday’s game. Those burned by Dzeko in Gameweek four will be praying for the Italian’s teamsheet to fall their way.

Leighton Baines makes a welcome surge in our Fantasy thinking – his fixture against former club Wigan looks attractive and makes him nailed-on for Scout Pick selection. Fourth place in our poll is surprising for a defender but Baines proved last weekend against Villa that he can offer the kind of creative influence that many midfielders fail to produce. No player created more goalscoring opportunities than Baines in Gameweek four and the Latics defence looks to be there for the taking if, and it’s a big if, Baines’ team-mates can rise to the occasion and match the performance of the raiding left-back.

West Brom’s Peter Odemwingie and Liverpool’s Luis Suarez stand out as leftfield captain choices – both have undoubted quality but will need to produce on their travels to repay the faith. Odemwingie returned to the Baggies starting lineup in form at Carrow Road but the trip to Swansea will be testing – particularly if Brendan Rodgers’ side continue to retain possession as they have in their previous games. Suarez is a player who can produce against any opposition, but two consecutive blanks against Bolton and Stoke have dented the confidence and seen Fantasy sales of the Uruguayan. The next two Gameweeks could be crucial to his future in our Fantasy sqauds – fail to notch at Spurs or at home to Wolves in Gameweek six and we’re likely to see the transfers out increase markedly.

Bolton’s Martin Petrov is there as your real risk and reward option. The Bulgarian has been outstanding for Owen Coyle’s side this term and, despite talk of tweaks to the Trotters starting lineup, Petrov looks nailed on for a start. Norwich are at the Reebok and should afford Petrov opportunities to add to his blossoming Fantasy reputation this term.

Plenty of options – could this be the Gameweek that Rooney fails to return and creates a differential for those without the United striker? It will be interesting to see how confidence in Rooney develops as more votes roll in. Don’t forget to cast yours via the homepage before Saturday’s deadline.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

FYI (in response to a post made a while back) - I subbed in Adebayor two days ago. When I posted I had already done the trade/

Part of me wants Dzeko back, but I'm happy enough with Adebayor and not having to ride that roller coaster any more.

I don't think you will regret the move. Dzeko when playing may score more. But I think it will generally level out over the season and saves you the headache... my 2 cents.

And got me an extra 0.7 to spend elsewhere

(Petrov/Baines -> Mata/Enrique(other 5.3 def)) for 4 points - what's your thoughts on that potential for next week?

Playing the fixture game then it's perfect. Infact, it's pretty good either way.

I'm waiting abit longer on Mata. I just want to ensure that Mireilles won't steal any of his thunder.

Need to free up some cash for a couple of defence splitting changes!
What do you think of transfering out Dzeko to Peter Odemwingie!?
I had him last season and he was creaming it towards the end of the season. I’m thinking he can match the big man what with the rotation at Eastlands?!

RvP has scored 2 out of the last three games, plus he hit the post in the game vs Swansea, he's still a viable option

That said, I'm captaining Baines over him.

Bolton conceded 3 against man city and liverpool before so Rooney always had potential to score big, i just chose to go with RVP at home to a promoted team with the rooney thing eating away at me once the deadline passed!

does your captain need to score a hattrick??? You have got high standards! If you can pick a captain who scores a goal this week you will be doing well. I think out of all the fixtures, Rooney is as likely as any to score a goal tbh

You're taking what i'm saying out of context! You go for who you think will score the most, i personally thought RVP had more chance of scoring more compared to Rooney last week whether it be a goal and an assist or a hatrick.

well personally I feel Rooney has as much chance of scoring at home against Chelsea as RVP away to Blackburn. Home game, Team playing briiliant, in the form of his life against a Chelsea team who have conceded a few this season (no matter the aura of a stern defence) v RVP: team lacking confidence, away from home, Blackburn defence strong outfit

My plan was to save my free transfer and do 2 next week. I'd not noticed but my defence for this weekend is:

    Bosingwa (MUN - A)
    Taylor R (AVL - A)
    Kompany (FUL - A)
    Hughes (MCI - H - 50% Injury)
    Simpson (AVL - A)

Should I transfer in a defender this week? Not quite got the funds for Hughes > Huth. Damn 0.1 price drop.

    Cheers guys,

Your always going to have problems if your not comfertable playing 2 new defenders? Why have them both if your not happy to play them? I would make a trade in defence personally. But its not beyond relms that newcastle can register a clean sheet and you clean up. Drew a blank against Wolves at home and the mighty heskey is out

Can break it down like this. Van Nistelrooy was an amazing goal scorer and hold up the ball up striker.

Rooney isn't as good a goal scorer but can be the playmaker, play LW, in goal and contributes more to how the team performs.

          I'd pick Rooney.

I wouldnt necessarily agree. Rooney has more technical skills now than Van Nistlerooy had and he is still only 26. Some of his finishing is sublime. Van Nistlerooy never moved further back from the half way line so he spent much of his time loitering in the box, hence the greater strike ratio

On that note - would Ruud in his prime be a great player in the current environment (built on mobile interchangeable forwards)? whereas Rooney would undoubtedly still be a great player regardless of the era.

not necessarily the environment tbh, rather the adabtability to the teams tactics. Ruud relied on substantial service into the box and with the likes of Nani, Valencia, Evra and Young, not to mention Jones and Rooney, Ruud could be even more prolific today.

That argument could hold, but Ruud could also slow the team down (ala Berbatov). The fluidity of the team includes the strikers moving out into the wings (Welbeck and Rooney in the first few weeks)

Ruud 150 goals in 220 games. He was great for man utd. Much more consistent that roon, Chico is more in his mold. He would play in any team in the world at his peak.

I would place him 3 behind Ronaldo and Henry.

Let's see...both play on the shoulder of last defender, both are great finishers inside the box! Both really score from outside the box and both are more known for there movement off the ball.

                Both are goal poachers!

I see the similarities you are citing, yeah. I just couldnt compare them as being like for like, mainly due to the pace of both players. Ruuds movement is/was far less dramatic than Hernandez.

Hernandez is not in the same league as Ruud with regard to holding up the ball. I just think he is closer to Van Nistelrooy than Rooney but not like for like

Rooney for me. Ruud was fantastic at what he did, but relied on service to finish, Rooney works for the team can create and score and can do it from nowhere.

That or my memory on Ruud is fuzzy and he was a demon who ran at defences and set up his team mates and I don't recall any of it.

Also Rooney never missed a penalty to stop The Invincibles from ever happening...

            Lol

            But good idea 😛

            My concerns:
Jones, Parker, Osman have no place in a fantasy team (not at their prices)

Your main player is a rotation risk, if you're going to play Aguero, have someone else you can captain.

I think Nani may be better than Young going forward, although I'd be wary with rotation risk with Valencia (Mata looks a good bet, even double up with Silva).

That's not bad, but then you're missing out on a big hitter.

I'd keep Aguero, and work a way to get Mata/Silva in as an alternative captain.

To be honest, it's not a horrible team but for the fact that you're wildcarding - a team like that should have 15 players worth writing home about (best in position at their prices).

Osman has rubbish fixtures coming, Jones is a rotation risk when Vidic returns. You're wildcarding, don't take risks.

I don't have rooney or any Man Utd Coverage.
I have been fairly lucky with my captain choices.
    GW 1 Silva 18
    GW 2 Bent 24
GW 3 Suarez 2 (unlucky that week)
    GW 4 Siva 20
For GW 5 I am going for Darren Bent again. He is due a good score again. Villa are playing well. Even though I know Newcastle are defending well, but I expect Bent to be involved points wise.
If Bent does nothing again and remains isolated he's out.
Maybe Gabby/Heskey are better options? 😉

again your defining it as you see it - ive never professed myself as a hardcore fan. Yet your using it somehow against me? Im glad im not a hardcore fan - to be proud of this subjective group driven myopic nonsense is naive . If you want to support a team do - you dont have to therefore cos you like said team accept all the behaviours of what these supporters beleive and all the beliefs they do. This is how you are a sheep - your merely following group norms as id its somehow not odd.

Tell me again how City conceding versus Napoli has anything to do with domination of football in a country which as i said before you have no connection with.

nice snide remark aswell to begin which will win appeal and get you some brownie points - again done for sheepish effect

I actually lol'd at this, and no this isn't a snide comment for sheepish effect, it's genuine.

People were beginning to talk of City as the best English team, which is why I was happy when they conceded versus Napoli. Understand?

I haven't claimed to be a ''hardcore fan'' either, you brought that into it, remember?

And brownie points? No, I didn't say Oh dear to win brownie points. Why would I care about earning brownie points on an internet forum?

And please, don't waste any more of my time by using the same point against me, when it is so clearly wrong. I don't hate City because they're local rivals, that would be stupid, I don't even hate them. I just don't want them to do well because I don't want them to overtake United as the best English team. There really isn't much to it.

I just love to highlight the hypocrisy that you only have issues with english players. You highlight Jones as arrogant for sort of not smiling when he scores a goal, and other perceived interview crimes, yet name yourself (and your original grav) after the most arrogant player in football today. If Beckham has said what Ronaldo said in that bbc article, you'd have spat your dummy out and written 3 essays on it already.

You highlight Beckham's endorsements when every other major footballer on the planet does the same thing, as i've just shown you.

If you are going to whinge about the state of the world, and football, then keep it consistent. If not, you just look like a bit of a bigoted bell.

Your missing a number of issues

                    1. Im watching mostly the English league so therefore majority of comments are on players there- certain English are extremely arrogant without backing up said arrogance on the field in a career. Jones as i said reminded me of Terry. Would you like me to say Nani is arrogant , i think he is and sometimes not justified but its a given.

                    2. Yes loads are endorsing products but Beckham is giving a much large spot light and coverage and this reflects my greater spot light on him.

If you think im bigoted your way off and know very very little about me.

i think you have just picked up on on the me thinking England were overated and reading hatred rather than football as a motive

From my comments you should see im as liberal , open minded and as far from prejudice as any here

Oh so are we now just insulting people we dont like? I haven't once criticised Jamie Oliver, even though he f*cked up the food at my school. I will now, he's a d*ck! I used to be able to buy sausage rolls, donuts, cakes, crisps and chocolate. And now I have to eat apples and nuts. I feel like a squirrel. I hate Jamie Oliver.

Agbonlahor operates like that too. He's turned down Pepsi on several occasions. They had to get Messi instead then.

You really come across as an arrogant twat on this forum mate! No offence! Tell me, do you avoid alcoholic beverages and eat perfectly??

The world would be a better place if people didnt hate others for insignificant things like promoting a soft drink.

I dont necessarily like Beckham and yes he over does the advertising element and comes across as a pure marketing guinea pig but hes the product of the environment he is a proffesional in. I wouldnt hate him for it though!

That's because you spend your whole time talking about bloody Beckham!

I go for 2. But it depends how Taylor, and Warnock, rotates with the rest of your defence, in terms of fixtures.

watch what you say guys. This DB sounds like he is a little cookoo and may come looking for you and shoot you guys. hahhaha just kidding Db. Its all about understanding, empathy and acceptance. Not everyone agrees with what people say or think, whether you are in the majority or the minority, however we need to accept peple's views and move on and accept, unless its not criminal.

Without getting too personal, its like my sister marrying a muslim and converting to a muslim. I am not happy about it as I dont agree with the faith, but I respect her choice and respect her faith. Who am I say if their faith is wrong or right.

Depends on whichever one you think will score more points. I think we need more time to see Adebayor. Dzeko is the most rotation prone and Odem is the cheapest, so your pick. Right now I have Adebayor.

Very good player, should keep his place for a long while imo, will only get better, offers us something different to what we have and he's not afraid to shoot which I like. He's capable of great things if he gets the time and space, and I think AVB will give it to him. I dont know whether to bench him or not for the Man U game though it will be my toughest decision this week. It was my easiest decision to get him GW4 because he will roll in the points especially in the easier fixtures. He's very motivated and I've seen him train, and its incredible. Far too good and cheap to ignore imo.

    RMT please.
    Given
Baines (WIG), Brown (STO), Collins (NEW)
Adam (TOT), Sinclair (WBA), Eagles (NOR), Sess (STO)
Roon (CHE), RVP (BLA), Dzeko (FUL) (c)
Sub – Vorm (WBA), Moses (EVE), Simpson (AVL), De Laet (BOL)

Should I use my FT this week?
Or save it for next week? (thinking Baines–>Enrique & Sess–>Mata in GW6)
