Mark may be sitting tight on his transfers after a poor start to the season, but there are plenty of managers banging their heads against the wall over early season tip-offs such as Victor Moses and Stephane Sessegnon. A well thought-out differential might be just the tonic needed to clear away the resultant headache, then, and as we begin the build-up to another gameweek, we’ve picked out our three favourite ‘alternative’ picks once again. After the vindication of a Daniel Sturridge 8 pointer last time out, I’m feeling confident….

Shaun Wright-Phillips

The former England winger produced an eye-catching display on his debut against Newcastle on Monday night and, as an out of position midfielder playing up front alongside Jay Bothroyd, he looks great value at just 6.4m. Despite ending goalless, QPR looked as threatening as they have all season and Wright-Phillips was instrumental in the majority of their attacking play. He could have had a hat-trick of assists in the first half and managed five shots on goal in total- if he can put in that sort of performance every week then attacking returns are surely a formality in games to come.

Upcoming fixtures for QPR look decent with a home tie against Villa, a trip to struggling Fulham and a home game against Blackburn following their trip to Molineux this weekend. If you’ve been holding off on Taraabt until QPR settle into the Premier League, then you may well be tempted to invest in Wright Phillips instead and with ownership of just 1.3%, could be rewarded with an excellent differential return over the coming weeks.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham fans have been crying out for a striker of Adebayor’s quality after a toothless strike force of Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch found the net just 18 times last season. Despite the Arsenal links, the Togolese striker looks set to become a firm favourite with the fans after scoring on his debut last weekend, in an energetic and thoroughly impressive all round display. A great example of a ‘confidence player’, Adebayor’s enthusiasm has been known to wane as a season goes on, but at the moment he is full of it, and looks like a steal at just 8.0m.

At home to Liverpool this weekend will be a slightly tougher test than Wolves last week, but Tottenham will still feel confident they can pick up all three points. Redknapp fielded a virtual reserve side in the UEFA cup last night, so the usual European hangover for Tottenham won’t apply here and with no new first-team injuries to worry about, Adebayor and Defoe are expected to head up an attacking 4-4-2 formation that will be set up to attack Liverpool from the off. Harry Redknapp has indicated today that Rafael Van der Vaart could return on Sunday, but the likelihood is that Defoe would be the one to drop out if the Dutchman makes his comeback.

Gervinho

Gervinho returns to action this weekend after his three match ban for slapping Joey Barton, and the Ivory Coast striker will be looking to hit the ground running as Arsenal face a Blackburn side struggling for form. Priced at 8.9m in the FPL game, he isn’t the cheapest pick but at 3m less than Robin Van Persie and owned by just 1.3%, he could still be a great way into Arsenal’s attractive run of fixtures if you’re looking to save some cash.

Comfortable on the right or left flank, Gervinho is expected to start on the left against Blackburn but with the freedom to roam as part of a fluid front three, as was the case against Udinese in their Champions League qualifier. In this role, Gervinho can play a key part in the Arsenal attack against a poor Blackburn team, and stands a great chance of picking up some decent points. Considering his current total of minus one, it can only get better from here.

There isn't a stand out option for captain. If Rooney doesn't do much then getting the right captain will shoot you up the rankings. Problem is Rooney will probably knock a couple in.

So do you just captain him to make sure you keep up?

          None of RvP's.

He takes everything from the right, Arteta takes everything from the left (as Cesc and Nasri used to do).

        Not really.

Hernandez scored 2 goals last week and had one disallowed. And gave an assist on a plate which (cant remember who missed) messed up.

He is playing CF nailed on for most attacking team in league. If they score he will be involved. I think he is well worth it.

The 2mil plus for Rooney is worth it but i think he can match him from open play

              Captaincy

Vdv when he has nice games , Hernandez will score and get bps, Dzeko is new Berba :), Mata when Chelsea have nice games.

              Suarez!!!Surely they are captains.

Hernandez would have got 28 last week as captain. And Fergie wants 50 goals between him and Rooney.

Mata VDV Nasri are all on Frees or Corners though. I dont see Suarez having much though. I think Hernandez will be nice differential and get looks of bps with the new system of scoring.

Think he is going on many peoples radars. Especially if he remains the focal point of Rooney, Young and Nani creativity

      I like it.

I would adjust slightly as follows:
      VdV -> Silva
      Dzeko -> Adebayor

      Reasoning:
VdV may not start this weekend.
      Adebayor/Silva gives some cover.
You're taking a bet on the Silva/Nasri situation, by going my way you get to decide which plays out right (and then sub VdV for the other).
Dzeko can be brought in for anyone of your strikers depending on whether Hernandez turns out to be a rotation risk, Suarez remains crap or you don't want to double up on Spurs.

I think Dzeko is nailed on this weekend. And is more Direct than Silva
Remember Silva has very little if any set pieces and got lucky with 1 goal in 2 games away when City scored 8.

He got 2 assists last week to Nasri's 1, and started the game, and got BPs.

I agree, the set piece taking would lead me to Nasri, but other than that one game it would seem to be Silva in the driving seat for fantasy returns. All I'm saying is you're backing a horse here, and you may be wrong (and on that basis I'd rather have Silva for the ease of the downtrade).

Dzeko is probably nailed on for this weekend, but that doesn't resolve the Nasri/Silva issue. (if you didn't have Kompany at the back I'd say Nasri/Silva/Dzeko). Will Dzeko score a boatload? Possibly, in that case Nasri/Silva will provide so you'll still get that value with out the rotation fears. (based on the games, I think we may find that Nasri/Dzeko will combine and Silva/Aguero will be the counter - crossing vs. through balls)

But Nasri only got 20min last week. Plus i cant afford Silva unfortunately.

This game has gotten tough, before it was pick Henry/Ronaldo and people to join them. Now we have so many viable options is sickening, and Mancini is playing with our heads with his selections.

Nasri only got 20mins, which makes me worried he may continue to be a rotation risk. You also have Dzeko doing that to you. And if you go by my theory that Dzeko/Nasri will combine, you're doubling up. Honestly think that you can live with only one of those.

If you're struggling to afford, do you really need Ramsey?

Here Akers, you tried FIFA12 demo yet? Not keen on the new defending mallarky, thankfully you can revert to the traditional style.

How can you do that Attila?

New defending is hard, but giving you an option is bottling it a bit. Hope it's the same for everyone online, defending might actually be important this year if that's the case.

Just mid match I went to options, and then at the bottom there is the option to switch defending to 'legacy' mode. Thats the normal way.

kinda like the new defending system

I reckon it's better once you get used to it, but I liked the old way of just pressing x/square to get someone to tackle the player

Yes, love the new defending. Suits my style of defending very nicely. Gonna absolutely baus it.

I'd love to take a punt on Gervinho, really think he could have double figures this week but no way I'm ditching Roonpig for him and RVP > Gervinho is madness.

May be worth swapping jarvis for hunt. A lot of wolves play's gone through him this season and can see a few solid scores coming for him next few weeks

I think o'hara's playing a bit deeper this season.
Total fpl stat is 41% of play down hunt's wing, 33% through jarvis

    Suggestions on lineup?

    Given (Vorm)
Kompany, Shawcross, Johnson (Simpson, N Taylor)
Young, Nasri (c), Arteta, Petrov (Moses)
    Rooney, Aguero, Graham

I'm betting on Swansea to finally break their duck.

Also want to captain a City player and feel that Nasri > Aguero in terms of rotation risk.
