Mark may be sitting tight on his transfers after a poor start to the season, but there are plenty of managers banging their heads against the wall over early season tip-offs such as Victor Moses and Stephane Sessegnon. A well thought-out differential might be just the tonic needed to clear away the resultant headache, then, and as we begin the build-up to another gameweek, we’ve picked out our three favourite ‘alternative’ picks once again. After the vindication of a Daniel Sturridge 8 pointer last time out, I’m feeling confident….

Shaun Wright-Phillips

The former England winger produced an eye-catching display on his debut against Newcastle on Monday night and, as an out of position midfielder playing up front alongside Jay Bothroyd, he looks great value at just 6.4m. Despite ending goalless, QPR looked as threatening as they have all season and Wright-Phillips was instrumental in the majority of their attacking play. He could have had a hat-trick of assists in the first half and managed five shots on goal in total- if he can put in that sort of performance every week then attacking returns are surely a formality in games to come.

Upcoming fixtures for QPR look decent with a home tie against Villa, a trip to struggling Fulham and a home game against Blackburn following their trip to Molineux this weekend. If you’ve been holding off on Taraabt until QPR settle into the Premier League, then you may well be tempted to invest in Wright Phillips instead and with ownership of just 1.3%, could be rewarded with an excellent differential return over the coming weeks.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham fans have been crying out for a striker of Adebayor’s quality after a toothless strike force of Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch found the net just 18 times last season. Despite the Arsenal links, the Togolese striker looks set to become a firm favourite with the fans after scoring on his debut last weekend, in an energetic and thoroughly impressive all round display. A great example of a ‘confidence player’, Adebayor’s enthusiasm has been known to wane as a season goes on, but at the moment he is full of it, and looks like a steal at just 8.0m.

At home to Liverpool this weekend will be a slightly tougher test than Wolves last week, but Tottenham will still feel confident they can pick up all three points. Redknapp fielded a virtual reserve side in the UEFA cup last night, so the usual European hangover for Tottenham won’t apply here and with no new first-team injuries to worry about, Adebayor and Defoe are expected to head up an attacking 4-4-2 formation that will be set up to attack Liverpool from the off. Harry Redknapp has indicated today that Rafael Van der Vaart could return on Sunday, but the likelihood is that Defoe would be the one to drop out if the Dutchman makes his comeback.

Gervinho

Gervinho returns to action this weekend after his three match ban for slapping Joey Barton, and the Ivory Coast striker will be looking to hit the ground running as Arsenal face a Blackburn side struggling for form. Priced at 8.9m in the FPL game, he isn’t the cheapest pick but at 3m less than Robin Van Persie and owned by just 1.3%, he could still be a great way into Arsenal’s attractive run of fixtures if you’re looking to save some cash.

Comfortable on the right or left flank, Gervinho is expected to start on the left against Blackburn but with the freedom to roam as part of a fluid front three, as was the case against Udinese in their Champions League qualifier. In this role, Gervinho can play a key part in the Arsenal attack against a poor Blackburn team, and stands a great chance of picking up some decent points. Considering his current total of minus one, it can only get better from here.

That subs bench is hell to call, no-one stands out as likely to get points.

I'd probably put Moses as first sub, there is a chance he could get a shot in.

Here’s one for you (off topic).

My wife is expecting our third child. When she got pregnant for the first time her due date was 6th Feb. (My birthday is 8th Feb.)

I e mailed PaddyPower for odds on three babies all born on my birthday. Eventually they got back to me and said 10,000 to 1.

The actual odds are, wait for it, 49,027,896 to 1.

Anyway I put 10 euro on at 10,000 to 1.

First baby born on my birthday…result!!!

Second baby born in November…ho hum.

Third baby due date? You guessed it…my birthday!

So bleedin’ close…I made the mistake of telling her as well.

You forgetting that you are partly in control of this experiment?

i.e. you can aim to get pregnant such that the due date is around 8 Feb.

Giving a normal 3 week window around this (work out why for yourself) gives you a probability of 1/21 for each experiment. So gives a probability of 1 - (20/21)^3 - if I remember correctly.

      Poor keeper choices.

Graham won't get you many points most weeks and your midfield may not be able to compensate for that.

My recommendation would be to lose Baines (horrid fixtures coming up after this week) and get Mata in for Sess. Nani may be rotated so I'd be inclined to downgrade to someone like Jarvis/Taarabt/SWP/Sinclair and upgrade Graham to Adebayor if you have enough money.

Remember, your wildcarding for the next 15 GW's as you won't get another WC until GW20 so don't just WC for this weeks fixtures. You must look ahead when wildcarding.

However, you make like your team enough to keep it as it is since them's the players you obviously chose with a free pass this week.

Bolton can't defend its not in Coyle's blood so get rid of Jussi
Defence looks goof except for Hughes - if its fulham Hughes - under Jol their defence wont be great - have a look at WBA or Newcastle defenders like Olsson and R taylor.
Outside of Nani and Silva midfield is poor - Petrov doesn't stay fit nor has stayed consistent his whole career, Sessegon flatters to deceive and mosses is ok for cheap back up.
Upfront - Odem for me is a little overvalued now he plays with Long, Rooney is standard, Graham has done nothing to justify selection.

You think? Odem could be good over the next few weeks and SWP looked good on Monday night. Brunt is 50/50 and Ade is temperamental.

SWP has never really delivered, he looked good against a poor, poor newcastle team. Brunt is consistent if nothing else, and adebayor will get goals imo

It depends on who'll play if Brunt doesn't.

My gut says Odem may slightly outscore Adebayor (maybe an assist or BP difference), but SWP and your reserve will both get around 2/3.

At best I think you break even, over the long-term Brunt/Odem match up and Adebayor is better than SWP.

I'd keep Adebayor. Got some nice fixtures coming up from GW8 on so stick with him is my opinion.
He's pencilled into my team when I wildcard (plan to do it after GW7 during International break).

Brunt is doubtful so if you wanted to do one xfr I'd be tempted to do Taarabt instead of SWP. Got a feeling the R's might get a penalty this weekend.

Apparently a NASA satelite was hit by a mystery object and is now crashing towards earth with a one in 3000 chance of hitting someone.

And they said that no harm would ever come of stoke's style of play.....

I'd play Enrique over Bosingwa. Man U attack > Spurs attack by more than Chelsea defence > Liverpool defence.

one final thing about mark on sports tonight. i really think he missed a trick not doing the interview wearing a load of bling and lying on a chaise longue. would have been a great way to get back at those saying the site has sold out

24.5 for a def & mid. Need both to start.
Had VDV and Woodgate but not convinced either will play 60+ mins.

    Thoughts?

Thanks a ton folks... a bit of rejigging and I end up with the followng (to avoid doubling up on AVL in defence)

            Begovic Vorm
            Kompany Enrique Bosingwa Warnock Simpson
            Silva Arteta Mata M.Petrov SWP
            Rooney Odem Klasnic

Thanks for the Mata tip. Hate going for players that have not played for a couple of seasons in the prem, but I think Mata is worth it. Struggled with Baines... but going to give mata a run out, and fancy AVL for a few cleanies.
