Mark may be sitting tight on his transfers after a poor start to the season, but there are plenty of managers banging their heads against the wall over early season tip-offs such as Victor Moses and Stephane Sessegnon. A well thought-out differential might be just the tonic needed to clear away the resultant headache, then, and as we begin the build-up to another gameweek, we’ve picked out our three favourite ‘alternative’ picks once again. After the vindication of a Daniel Sturridge 8 pointer last time out, I’m feeling confident….

Shaun Wright-Phillips

The former England winger produced an eye-catching display on his debut against Newcastle on Monday night and, as an out of position midfielder playing up front alongside Jay Bothroyd, he looks great value at just 6.4m. Despite ending goalless, QPR looked as threatening as they have all season and Wright-Phillips was instrumental in the majority of their attacking play. He could have had a hat-trick of assists in the first half and managed five shots on goal in total- if he can put in that sort of performance every week then attacking returns are surely a formality in games to come.

Upcoming fixtures for QPR look decent with a home tie against Villa, a trip to struggling Fulham and a home game against Blackburn following their trip to Molineux this weekend. If you’ve been holding off on Taraabt until QPR settle into the Premier League, then you may well be tempted to invest in Wright Phillips instead and with ownership of just 1.3%, could be rewarded with an excellent differential return over the coming weeks.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tottenham fans have been crying out for a striker of Adebayor’s quality after a toothless strike force of Defoe, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Peter Crouch found the net just 18 times last season. Despite the Arsenal links, the Togolese striker looks set to become a firm favourite with the fans after scoring on his debut last weekend, in an energetic and thoroughly impressive all round display. A great example of a ‘confidence player’, Adebayor’s enthusiasm has been known to wane as a season goes on, but at the moment he is full of it, and looks like a steal at just 8.0m.

At home to Liverpool this weekend will be a slightly tougher test than Wolves last week, but Tottenham will still feel confident they can pick up all three points. Redknapp fielded a virtual reserve side in the UEFA cup last night, so the usual European hangover for Tottenham won’t apply here and with no new first-team injuries to worry about, Adebayor and Defoe are expected to head up an attacking 4-4-2 formation that will be set up to attack Liverpool from the off. Harry Redknapp has indicated today that Rafael Van der Vaart could return on Sunday, but the likelihood is that Defoe would be the one to drop out if the Dutchman makes his comeback.

Gervinho

Gervinho returns to action this weekend after his three match ban for slapping Joey Barton, and the Ivory Coast striker will be looking to hit the ground running as Arsenal face a Blackburn side struggling for form. Priced at 8.9m in the FPL game, he isn’t the cheapest pick but at 3m less than Robin Van Persie and owned by just 1.3%, he could still be a great way into Arsenal’s attractive run of fixtures if you’re looking to save some cash.

Comfortable on the right or left flank, Gervinho is expected to start on the left against Blackburn but with the freedom to roam as part of a fluid front three, as was the case against Udinese in their Champions League qualifier. In this role, Gervinho can play a key part in the Arsenal attack against a poor Blackburn team, and stands a great chance of picking up some decent points. Considering his current total of minus one, it can only get better from here.

RMT please! Wildcard ahoy. What do you guys think? Any no-no’s?

    Vorm (Begovic)
Jagielka, Ward, Simpson, Baines (c) (Subs: Shawcross)
Arteta, Nasri, A. Young (Subs: Dyer, Walters)
    Dzeko, Hernandez, Sturridge

too little rooney cover I guess is the main problem. ive actually transferred him out because its annoyed me so much to have not captained him in the past. Come on chicharito!

I originally had Petrov in there. I can't quite vision how well Bolton will fair, plus they have several hard fixtures after this weekend. I wanted some quality in midfield, at the moment its pricy but risky. Any suggs?

Go with Mata and Warnock. There's no point in bringing in Baines as you won't want him for four of the next 5 weeks and he's too expensive to bench so you'd more or less have to rely on attacking returns whereas both Mata and Warnock have a decent set of fixtures.

Well i think Bosingwa is the most likely out of those lot to grab some attacking points (even including the 2 midfielders) so he's probably in for me. I don't expect a clean sheet from any of the defenders tbh.

I'm not certain by any means, but it's definitely possible he'll be benched. Kean dropped him after he scored on opening day against Wolves and he only came on against Everton due to the 2 quick injuries to Dunny and MGP. He did start the last game at Fulham but i didn't think he was particularly impressive or influential

oooh! I think Bos is less likely to get forward at old trafford than he normally does. I have no info to back this up though! Enrique does get forward, and Tottenham are a fantasy headwreck - if VDV wasn't there last season they would have been in serous trouble imho. I think Enrique here, but if I could avoid playing either I would!

Mata instead of Cahill. He might not do so well this week but he's a good long term shout.

This week, yes, but next week, Lamps could score big against Swansea and Cahill has an awful run of fixtures.

i have never been more frustrated with fantasy, im really happy with aguerro only for stupid mankini and his rotation, what should i do, go all out and put him as captain or get rid and use the money elsewhere, i also have hernandez who could also be risky, get rid of both for safer bets or stick and potentially get screwed?????, on my wildcard so as they say its squeaky bum bum time

what's the rest of your team?

aguero (C) could pay off big time or you may be left with a 15 min cameo 1 pointer. there really is no way of knowing what mankini has up his sleeve.

safer bets this week for captain are likely to be Rooney VP or Silva

        gibbs,kompany,hutton or shawcross, (bosingwa,ward)
        silva,walcot,swp,m.petrov,(dyer)
        hernandez,aguerro,agbon,

        1.4 in bank

i want him captain because if he plays he will more than likely smash it, but as u say if he doesn't it a disaster

If you're thinking about a captain basically silva would be the safest/ Then poss hernandez or aguero. this week isn't a very straightforward captain choice...man c muddy the waters through rotation risks, and the (C) choice of the season Rooney has a tough home fixture vs Chelsea

Here's are some left field questions for you:

          1. You decide to bet on the grand national. How do you decide which horse to pick?
          2. Your favourite team take to the pitch. Your favourite team striker is 38 years old - do you hope to see him in the starting 11 or on the bench as an 'impact sub'?

            1. im not into horses so i would look at the papers and read some opinions from the experts, see who friends are going for,and if that is still no help i will probably go for the name that sounds more attractive to me.

            2. this depends on a lot of different factors, but i guess if he is my fav striker i want to see him in the starting line up

              Two good (consistent) answers.

There was a psychologist in the early 20th century called Benet or Binet (think he was French?). He maintained that you could categorise people into one of two groups - sentimental or logical. If you need to make a significant decision and you're a 'sentimenatal' then you get the biggest thrill by not being 'logical' and in effect, following your emotional instinct. Vice versa if you're a 'logical'.

This doesn't help you predict the future...! But it does suggest that if you pick aguero and he plays and scores, that you will get the most enjoyment from the game week.

I know its all BS by the way, but its just a game, and you could be one of the few pulling a master stroke tonight by captaining Aguero. I'm not saying I'd do it, but if you do I hope he scores big time for you.

i should have added that your answers put you in the 'sentimental' category.

very interesting, and you do make a lot of sense, i would agree that in general i do tend to go with my gut and take risks, i think i will go with him but still considering a few options, one more question for you if u dont mind,

                  A)
                  walcot,swp,m.petrov,silva,(dyer)
                  aguerro (c), hernandez,agbon
switching walcot for mata next week

                  or

                  B)
                  walcot,nasri,silva (c),bale,swp
                  long,agbon,(anelka)
switching walcot for mata next week

really need good opinions on this thanks

I'm lookin' at B and I'm struggling with it. I could be waaay wrong and you could be cursing me so its just an opinion - not gospel! But, you have silva and nasri in there, so they might split the points between them in midfield for assists etc. Also, bale... I know he's a great player but i find tottenham so tough to predict, esp. with Ade joining... gel time required IMHO. Big fan of long, but not unitl he proves he can play at this level (I mean over at least 10 games).

I'd go for A. Try to see if MAN C. announce a team before 11:30 tomorrow, and the very best of luck. The alternatives for (c) seem to be Silva (who should start) and Walcott. Best of luck itnot.

cheers A is the team i will most likely go with, B was something i threw together in 3 mins just before i posted, i will more than likely go with A bit will also play around with B a bit more first and see if i stumble across something that screams at me, thanks for your advice, greatly appreciated good sir

Bleuch my team looks like poo this week and I can easily see at least 4 or 5 players earning 2 points or less.

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
    Lescott, Warnock, Simpson
    Silva(c) N'Zogbia, Moses, Dyer
    Rooney, Suarez(v) Dzeko

    Subs: Bosingwa, Brunt, De Laet
