Restored to the regular Monday slot, we boil the Gameweek past down to three key elements, lauding the return of a Premier League marksman, recognising the transformation of some Shepherds Bush strugglers and examining just how budget Fantasy talent has played its part in an extraordinary opening to our season.

The Player

Yakubu could barely have chosen a better time to make his return to the Premier League scoresheet. With a pocket of protestors in the car park and general malaise falling over Steve Kean’s tenure at Ewood Park, the Blackburn boss put his faith in the barrel-chested Nigerian and was duly repaid in style.

While Yakubu is undoubtedly carrying some extra pounds, his appetite for goals remains healthy enough to suggest that he could be an unlikely saviour for Kean’s job and Blackburn’s Premier League status. His first goal was subliming accepted – a first time poke from a Junior Hoilett incision through a static Arsenal defence. While that gave Rovers a foothold, the second, a tap in from a driven Steven N’Zonzi cross-shot, was far simpler but arguably more significant in that it gave them the advantage. Blackburn now have themselves a player who will take up goalscoring positions and has the talent to convert them into precious goals. In Hoilett, they also have a twinkling talent that should provide ample feed for a rabid Yak.

As a cheap forward option, Yakubu is clearly on the Fantasy radar. An away trip to a miserly Newcastle, followed by a home clash with City does cast doubt on the wisdom of an early investment, but the Yak’s time may well come soon enough.

The Team

A transfusion rather than a mere injection of new blood appears to have had an instinct impact at QPR. Neil Warnock’s mass acquisition of proven Premier League talent has transformed Rangers into a side widely tipped to struggle, to one capable of dominating a resurgent Wolves in their own lair. The 3-0 win at Molineux demonstrated the value of new skipper Joey Barton, whilst providing more evidence that Shaun Wright-Phillips is still capable of dazzling once he’s given the opportunity and platform to thrive. The free-role up in support of the lone striker has already seen the former England winger prosper and, in just two matches, he has emerged as a viable Fantasy prospect. Behind him, the industry of Alejandro Faulin and Shaun Derry, combined with the wizardry of Adel Taarabt, gives the R’s a midfield that bristles with muscle and creativity.

A new look defence also appears to have gelled. Warnock’s pairing of Danny Gabbidon and Anton Ferdinand know each other from their Upton Park days and have already given Rangers an assured foundation in front of the reliable Paddy Kenny. Armand Traore’s leggy pace down the left has also proved an effective weapon, balanced by Luke Young’s consistency on the opposite flank.

Fantasy managers are re-considering the boosted Loftus Road squad, with budget option Gabbidon and the flourishing Wright-Phillips, surely set for further investment. Taarabt meanwhile, now appears to be on the periphery, although his continued creative spark and set-piece threat will surely bear fruit soon enough.

The Talking Point

While Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero continue to provide heavyweight returns up front, the selection strategy of a bottom heavy Fantasy squad has been boosted further by the recent performances of budget defences – Swansea, QPR and Newcastle.

As we alluded to in Saturday’s Knee Jerk – with five Gameweek’s gone, this tactic has been rewarded handsomely. Clean sheets for Swansea and QPR this weekend, fuelled by more goals for Rooney and Aguero, plus the strike from budget friendly Nathan Dyer – only compounded matters.

Can such a strategy continue to go on thriving? Certainly we expected QPR to start well given their fixtures, while Swansea were always set to be a good option at the Liberty Stadium having conceded so few goals at home last term – the visiting opposition thus far has been obliging however.

Newcastle meanwhile, are compensating for a lack of attacking flair, by tightening further at the back – founded on a sound central midfield pairing in Cheik Tiote and Yohan Cabaye.

Defensive acquisitions from all three of those sides looks a sound option, although it’s debatable just whether QPR and Swansea can maintain form that has seen them notch 3 clean sheets in 5 matches.

So far, mid-price Fantasy options have generally disappointed across the board – the likes of Charles N’Zogbia, Jamie O’Hara, Stephane Sessegnon – the list of failing mid-range Fantasy prospects goes on at length. It remains to be seen if these attacking options can wake from the slumber to provide differentials but, in defensive terms, we can surely expect Jose Enrique, Jose Bosingwa and Vincent Kompany to provide increasing value as the season progresses, while the United defence and the pricey prospect of Leighton Baines, will also be expected to deliver significant profits in due course.

The trick is, to time the rebalancing of our squads accordingly – right now, the bottom heavy Fantasy lineup is winning hands down.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Advice appreciated. On my Wild Card this week. So far:

    Krul (Vorm)
    Simpson Ferdinand(QPR) R.Taylor (Warnock N.Taylor)
    Mata Nani Silva SWR (M.Petrov)
    Aguero(c) Rooney(vc) Suarez

Obviously retardedly heavy on Toon defense but Blackburn won't have Song and Koscielny scoring goals for 'em this week so I figure I should be good-to-go.

I don't see a reason to spend big on D, the cheapies have been able to get cleansheets. It's better to rely on a consistent front 7 than a backline

He can always make changes as necessary. I'm almost leading my league so once my lead is comfortable, I can make changes for hits and not worry about it

Hi guys, I never ask for advice but am having a dire season so far.

What would you do with the following team?

    Given/Schwarzer
    Bosingwa/Kompany/Hughes/De Laet/Collins
    N'Zogbia/Sessegnon/Nasri/Brunt/Moses
    Holt/RVP/Dzeko

Possibly looking to get rid of Hughes/De Laet/N'Zogbia/Sessengnon/Brunt/Moses/Holt/RVP/

Looking to get in Taylor(SWA)/R Taylor/Mata/Barton/Larsson/Walters/Rooney/Adebayor/Aguero.

Time to wildcard or should I rough it out and do N'Zogbia to Mata and keep the wild card for international break?

Miles behind in mini league already, but not panicking just yet?

Just a feeling but it's time to bank the Bosingwa and Jarvis profits methinks. Chelsea will start playing more matches soon (ie. Vs Fulham on Wednesday in the Carling Cup!) and with the overall defensive squad healthy you can expect rotation. Wolves have not looked good and don't have great fixtures over the next 5 weeks. Maybe bring in Arteta somehow?

walcott home to bolton could easily outscore him, thats why i hesitate. plus walcott then plays tot, SUN, STK

arsenal were terrible at rovers, but they still attacked well. you would assume walcott will get his place back, he could score some serious points over the next 4 weeks.

You have sorta convinced me on the walcott front with your speech tbh. And looking back i dont think mata did that great against ManU, the only reason why i said it was cause they got Swansea and can see him scoring a goal or giving assists, but it would be only for that game. Whereas walcott would be strong in quite a few of the next games and is cheaper so you could spend elsewhere.

Liverpool have an easy game against a pretty bad Wolves atm so can see suarez scoring, and you have Dzeko if Man city do well against everton (but everton are gd defensively). So I wouldn't change it!

SWP for me because and only because sunderland have nicolas bendtner in the team.

naww not just that. he's playing as a striker and qpr having something goin on.

saying that this is the type of flare decision i make which i lose out on when swp keeps misfiring.

SWP is certainly an attractive option but QPR's next 6 games dont look too good - two good home games in first three, fulham away and last three are Chel, Spurs, Man C. Larsson will be sporadic I think but Sunderland do have a better run coming up.

    Guys...

Well I'm now miles behind my mini league leader (he has rooney and aguero). I'm thinking of getting rid of Walcott and klasnic for a 4pt hit. 1.1m in bank.

    Shall I get

    A. mata and ????
    B. Aguero and ????
    C. Torres and ????
    D. Suarez and ????
    E. VDV and ????

    Advice much appreciated!

    Thanks

The site mourns for your concealed wisdom and wit, really.

He asked an honest question - and you flamed him. You. Acting like you're somebody around here.

Got news for you, son ... you're rude, arrogant without merit, and definitely a 'nobody'

            That's my comment. My man.

I made a comment and you responded by indirectly calling me a tw@t because you did not like it. Not my problem. Like I said before, Stick it. My man. Go play with your somebody cronies.

AVB has to deal with it one way or another. Luiz certainly has grit back there and is a better defender than Bosingwa. I have Bos and would happily do the shift to Luiz if I know he's a regular

he deserves to be. luiz seems to have a bad defensive reputation based on very little. gave away a rash penalty once and got beaten by a through ball at old trafford. seems more likely he was then dropped for the last 2 matches due to arguing with ancelotti. AVB was manager in portugal as luiz picked up the player of the year gong there.

I don't quite get the Martin Petrov bandwagon that's going on at the moment. Bolton have had lousy start to season although Petrov has looked good but Arsenal away followed by Chelski at home don't sound like fixtures that will yield major points. Am I missing something?

      Yes.

Bolton will have played Utd, City, Liverpool, Arsenal & Chelsea by end of GW7, so from then will have great fixtures till Christmas probably. Also playing a Arsenal side lacking in confidence, leaky defence and the pressure of having to win at home from their fans. Will also play against Boswinga who isn't the best defensively.

    Quick poll.

    A. Van Persie and 5 m striker
    B. Aguero and 5,5 - 6m striker (maybe the Yak)
    C. Dzeko and Adebayor
    D. Suarez and 7,5m striker

Van Persie, Suarez and Adebayor would be the only attacking coverage from their team but I currently have Silva as City coverage.

I have no Chelsea attack either, and despite the loss, had a lot of attacking intent v ManU.

Id like Nani and Mata or Sturridge, and maybe PJones

          Dzeko to Sturridge

          next week Walcott to Nani??

Haha I was saying earlier sturridge is a real punt atm, depends whether you want to risk it but i think he is bang on form and could score a few against Swansea.
And I am in favour of Jones atm (just cause i have him).
However I don't think you should ever get rid of Man City attack at the moment, they can destroy teams.

I'm not sure what i would do, big decision mate!!
Maybe get rid of Baines for this week, on a cheaper player you think would get a clean sheet. Then look from there.

Brunt or Moses out as priority?

    Silva Young Dyer Brunt Moses
    RVP Rooney Adebayor

I wanna keep Brunt as WBA have good fixtures to come, but he didn't start and produce in last 2 games.
Moses haven't met expectation also. But he's nailed and Rodallega's injury may benefit him.

Keep Brunt at home to Fulham.

Rotate Moses & Dyer (assuming you play 343). Wigan won't score many - only deflections and pens so far. Dyer will do well mainly at home and is VFM at 4.6.

Keep it as it is or downgrade RVP to Suarez/Aguero to upgrade Moses to Ramires/M.Petrov.

That's exactly my plan.. I may downgrade RVP to Aguero and upgrade one of Brunt/Moses.

But Ramires is not earning much point and Bolton fixture are not good.

I would like to get SWP but QPR fixture seem tricky as they will play Villa who haven't lost yet, visit Fulham, and then host Blackburn. This might easily upset some hope for QPR.

i am not sure if you could classify RVP --> Aguero as a downgrade. But obviously it is as aguero is cheaper... but probably not for long.

Ramires has played every minute for chelsea this year. I sold him when they bought mereiles but am regretting it a little. He layed the pass for the torres open goal shocker (ie. should have been an assist)... and de gea saved two off him earlier in the game. Doing more than lampard at 4.8mill cheaper.
