The Watchlist rankings, offering our top 10 player recommendations for the coming weeks, have today been updated to reflect recent form and forthcoming fixtures. You can soak them up now in the right-hand sidebar.

With both Manchester clubs still shredding through defences and budget back fours keeping sheets clean with regularity, we’re seeing template Fantasy squads created across the board. That trend might yet be disturbed by improved fixtures for the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool however, and their Fantasy assets remain key factors in our Watchlist rankings.

Newcastle’s fine defensive form is hard to ignore and is reflected in the Watchlist immediately; Tim Krul making a small climb to the top of our keeper rankings. Available for 4.6 in the Fantasy Premier League game, the Dutch stopper rotates well with the prosperous Michel Vorm for the next few Gameweeks, offering a strong solution between the sticks.

West Brom’s Ben Foster and Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer are another partnership that appears to gel nicely, they also boast strong fixtures over the next month. Wigan’s Ali Al-Habsi also remains a viable budget option, with City’s Joe Hart the obvious route should you wish to invest heavily in a keeper. Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczęsny is arguably the most sensible selection for those taking a gamble on the Arsenal back four over their spell of favourable fixtures.

City’s Vincent Kompany and Chelsea’s Jose Bosingwa remain our top selections amongst the defenders – fixtures fall in their favour and both seem to remain immune to the rotation going on around them. Newcastle’s back four is represented by Steven Taylor in our Watchlist, although Ryan Taylor arguably offers stronger short-term potential while Davide Santon remains troubled by injury. Danny Simpson is your cheap alternative, although he tends to offer little goal threat.

Fulham’s John Arne Riise and Liverpool’s Jose Enrique complete our Watchlist back five – both can be found in the mid-price bracket and have yet to deliver on their promise. Fixtures do fall more favourably for the pair however, and both possess attacking instincts from left-back which should see profits soon enough.

David Silva continues to look bomb-proof at the top of the midfielder rankings – seemingly untouchable within Roberto Mancini’s squad, the Spanish trickster has maintained returns and is just about to embark on a run of matches which should increase his output further.

Chelsea’s Juan Mata is perhaps Silva’s biggest pretender – like City, Andre Villa-Boas’ side have a favourable run of opponents to come and Mata, as the midfield creator, is lined up for some decent numbers. Right now, that earns him a higher ranking than Nani – our current preferred option in the Nani vs Ashley Young debate within the United ranks.

Shaun Wright-Phillips – the subject of today’s ICT Analysis article for Members – soars into our top five, with Newcastle’s Yohan Cabaye also well-fancied over the coming weeks, having so far been denied Fantasy returns, despite some impressive displays. We’ve more on him and Juan Mata, to come in future articles.

The Forward rankings remain largely untouched. It’s impossible to topple Wayne Rooney from top spot right now – despite a run of opponents that will surely test his form and United’s goal-getting talents.

Sergio Aguero is sticking close to the United man, with Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie in third with the fixture list offering him a platform that will surely see him begin to up his Fantasy returns. Luis Suarez holds in our top five, despite three consecutive blanks. We’re keeping the faith with Uruguayan ahead of a run of favourable Anfield clashes to come in the next six gameweeks.

Emmanuel Adebayor, Daniel Sturridge
and Leon Best are the big climbers and present worthy differentials going into the coming weeks. Adebayor has been a hugely popular transfer target of late and, of the three, has the proven pedigree. Daniel Sturridge, at just 6.5 in the FPL and with a strong schedule in front of him, is perhaps the most intriguing. We should see heightened interest in him if he can draw blood when Swansea visit the Bridge this weekend, although tonight’s start in the Carling Cup against Fulham will immediately put a question mark over his starting role for the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just wondering how so many people do "drunk transfers"
If I am drunk enough to do some ridiculous transfers I have seen then I am too drunk to login to FPL....Wait, what's that? Rooney > Torres for a four point hit??? When did i do that 😛

    Team idea.

3-4-3 with pricey strikeforce of Rooney, Dzeko, Aguero
    4 pricey midfielders + 1 cheap one
    4 cheap defenders + 1 pricey one

Gets around Aguero/Dzeko rotation problem. 3-4-3 when both playing, drops down to 3-5-2 when one playing. Can also be modified to 4-4-2 if it's a defensive GW.

Obviously should get some names down, but you get the principle. Thoughts in general?

Aye, I've been thinking maybe it's just a quirk of the fixtures. If average defences are pitted against toothless attacks for a couple of weeks, I guess you'd see this. Next two GWs will be pretty instructive. But on average can you get more points out of a good midfielder than a good defender?

I think there's every reason to think Swansea will continue to offer value at the back. They've got a solid keeper and decent defenders, plus they're not exactly prolific going forward so will count on keeping things tight at the back. Think Birmingham. There'll be some pastings in there, no doubt, but you have to have some cheap players in there somewhere and I think defence is where you'll get most value from them.

Yeah, that's about what I'm saying, I see investing in defenders as offering the poorest point rewards. Mainly because defenders' points are capped at 6 + bonus points, with the odd (3-4 a season max?) fluke goal. There's no hard limit to midfielders'/strikers' points so you might as well get the cheapest defenders with a chance of a CS, then pour your money on rampaging mids/fwds.

In the days of old you were paying for a United/Chelsea defender that would offer 30 points over 5 games. A good defensive unit in form is less patch than a striker. A striker at the same value can be a flash in the pan but may still only get 20 points over those 5 games.

Mmmmm food for thought. It's only now I realize they do set the clean sheet score to 4 points - same as the score for a goal. And I suppose even the best strikers can only average around a goal every two games. And the best defences probably can average around a CS every two games. Intriguing.

So look at last seasons as an example. Top no of clean sheets was 18 for Man City. For arguments sake lets say Kompany played in 16 of those. That gives you 64 points.

Now the joint top scorer was Tevez. He got 20 goals. So looking at 80 points.

Ok now if you look at points for value of player (i.e. how many points per million spent).

Kompany's value is 6 so we can give him a score of 10.7 (score devided by cost)
Tevez is 12 which gives us 6.7

I know there is a lot of holes in the stat manipulation here such as bonus, assists, conceding deductions and not using last seasons total scores (not available! Sort it out FPL!) but it does go to show.

Based on last seasons points totals:
                    Kompany 95 points cost 5.2
                    = 18.26
                    Tevez 185 points cost 11.5
                    = 16.08

But then you obviously can't play this game all but stats but this does show the value of 'expensive' defenders.

You don't have the money to do that. Many of us already have 3 pricey forwards + Bosingwa & 4 cheap defenders. Leaves money for only 2 or 3 pricey midfielders.

        I have gone with
Defenders - 2 "mid priced" (5-6) defenders along with 3 cheap defenders that rotate well (will play 1, maybe 2)
Midfielders - 3 expensive alongside 1 mid price and 1 cheaper mid
Forwards - 2 expensive, 1 mid priced (Odemwingie)
If Aguero keeps scoring and scoring, i will have 2 expensive mids, 2 mid priced and 1 cheaper mid alongside 3 expensive forwards

They can and do play together, as you'll recall from last week's PL match in fact. (2 goals for Aguero, 1 assist from Dzeko). Not every time, but I planned the team to deal with it when they don't and to milk it when they do.

          Just an experimental idea anyway.

For the first time ever playing this game I can’t think of a single transfer I want to make. Happy enough with my team for this GW, I have 2 frees so feel I need to make a transfer....any suggestions...
    Team is.....

    Begovic Given
Enrique Woodgate Warnock Simpson Brown (STK/AVL & NEW/SUN rotations)
    Mata Arteta Dempsey Parker Dyer
    RVP Dzeko Suarez

I know I’m missing out on Aguero/Rooney but I’m happy with some differential (for a few GWs at least)

Yeah form/fixtures is pretty much the closest you can get to fantasy football truth. I think the biggest mistake I made in season one was to pick solely based on quality of player... ironically.

If that were my team I'd take out Dempsey as I think he's overvalued 8.4. Parker is a more defensive midfielder, and at Spurs I can't imagine he'll be amongst the chances like VDV/Bale/Modric, so he's also overvalued at 6.5. Midfield options in the 6-7 range are crap, so I'd downgrade Parker to a cheap (but playing) mid and upgrade Dempsey to Silva who is must-have as he basically runs Citeh.

I have Suarez and Dzeko too and I'd keep an eye on them in case you have to drop them. Not doing so well.

Credit for keeping the faith with RVP.

With Man City playing against bayern on tuesday, and Mancini saying that 3 days isn't enough rest, do we think that Dzjecko or Aguero might be rested on saturday? Possibly more chance of aguero being rested, as Dzjecko was last time. Having said that, City are the lunch time game on saturday, so that might give them enough rest.

I think Aguero is the technically better player and Mancini will want to rest him for a technically better side (Bayern, not Everton, lol). Not necessarily for the whole match, could do a late sub.

Apparently when Dzeko was infamously rested last time, he'd also played 1, or maybe it was 2, international matches in the previous week. Haven't checked this though.

that's the point, you can only 7 out of 8 attacker - so that leaves one place for a cheap bench warmer

so what do you think about 4.5MF?

Is it too much to have Rooney, Nani AND Young in your team? This is what I'm thinking of moving to next week (will involve an 8 point hit):

    Kenny Vorm
Bos Enrique Brown Simpson De Laet
    Young Nani Nasri Mata Dyer
    Rooney Dzeko Best

    Madness or genius???

I've thought about this. I think the first question is will they be competing for the assist/goal points or setting each other up? Secondly is it too much of a risk to pick 2 slots in such a strong 4-man midfield which could be reshuffled or rotated at any time?

Definitely want Rooney + at least one of Nani/Young as they'll be setting him up, not competing for points.

Haha, to be honest I still haven't decided, just have it on Suarez at the moment.
Had it on Dzeko all last week, changed to Rooney on Saturday, then Silva, then Suarez, then Young (against Bosingwa, made sense) and then thought I'd stick with Dzeko as him scoring well would hurt the most as I had him the whole time...and he scored the best of them. So I may do the same with Suarez and hope for the best 😉

I am more interested in getting Cabaye than Mata this week, but I just can't find that spare transfer.

    2 queries:
Who do we think will score better between Baines or Young for the forseeable future?

Which MFer should I look to get rid of this week out of:
    Walters Brunt Sess

Sadly, I think Baines will do well but not enough to justify having a crap MFer in his financial place. Such are the funds this year in MF.

    Thoughts on this team?
Vorm Krul - Rotate well, and cheap
Bosingwa Warnock Bramble Simpson Woodgate - Warnock/Woodgate rotate very well, as do Bramble and Simpson
Silva Mata Nani SWP Dyer - Needs no explanation 🙂
Suarez Rooney Odemwingie - Suarez will be well up there come season end IMO, Rooney obvious choice, Odemwingie will become Adebayor later on.

Seriously though, he's the kind of player I would have for the fixtures and (wba) (QPR) are decent. The Stoke, Everton and Spurs games are hard to call but I could see him doing ok but not amazingly. Maybe a couple of goals over the next 4 weeks and the odd bonus.
