Chelsea’s kind run of upcoming fixtures bodes well for Andre Villas-Boas’ side as they look to recover from last weekend’s 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford.

While Villas-Boas’ quick passing game and personnel decisions rapidly lessen the importance of previous Fantasy favourites such as Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda, Juan Mata’s role in the new-look Chelsea side grows ever more crucial with each passing fixture.

It’s impossible to say just what effect the failed bid for Luka Modric has had on Villas-Boas’ thinking in terms of team set-up and structure but at present, it’s clear that Mata’s creative streak will be at the hub of Chelsea’s attacks. The somewhat unfortunate loss at the hands of Man United saw Mata involved throughout- he presented more goalscoring opportunities last week than any other player across the ten league fixtures.

Crucially, Mata even seems to have leapt ahead of Lampard in the queue for set-pieces; he took all of Chelsea’s corners in the first half at Old Trafford (ie, when Lampard was on the pitch) and it was his direct free-kick that eventually led to John Terry’s goal at Sunderland a couple of weeks back.

Two goals in four games are indicative of his eye for goal and quick integration to his new side and with (SWA, bol, EVE, qpr, ARS, bla) up next for the Blues, Mata will be key as Villas-Boas’s side look to step up their chase of the champions. While the Chelsea forwards also offer little form or certainty of game time, Mata -at 9.5 in FPL- is presenting quite a case for himself as the Blues attacking player of choice as the new campaign continues to unfold.

Apparently Chelsea had a fee agreed for Torres the summer that we signed Shevchenko, but Abrahimovic forced through the Shevcheko transfer, against Mourinho's wishes.

Was nearly an exact replica of Rooney's effort though. Only Rooney's went off his shin into the top corner, Torres' went towards the corner flag.

                Tiote's.

Simply because not only was it a wonder strike not involving a shin, but also because it made Arsenal the team they are today. 😛

                  Agreed.

Rooney's would have been goal of the season if it had made contact with his boot.

He's an Englishman playing for Manchester United. He could have probably scored a penalty and it would still be goal of the season.

                    Are you guys for real?

Rooney's overhead is arguably the best goal ever scored in the Premier League (Trevor Sinclair anyone?). Those kind of goals are only scored every few years and you are trying to denegrate it to the levels of Tiote and Elmanders which were nowhere near as audacious and awe-inspiring as Rooneys.

I know I'm biased as are the media etc towards an English player but come on! That is the goal you dream about scoring.

            Lazy reply.

I'm not referring to his achivements in the game, he is undoubtedly a fantastic manager, anyone who can do what he has done at a variety of clubs is clearly talented.

The myth I referred to is that some (specifically Chelski fans) people have this shady opinion that his managerial mistakes were never his fault or responsibility. Instead they prefer to shift the blame onto scapegoats or the unlikeable Abramovic. Mourinho is a master spin doctor and any time anything goes pear-shaped he ensures the blame lies elsewhere. His biggest admirers also cooperate in this absolution.

In the same way he can step in with quick decisions, impulsive changes to manipulate the outcome of a match, he manipulates the media and his myth to ensure he nearly always comes out smelling of roses.

I'm more than prepared to admit that Mourinho's transfer record at Chelsea wasn't actually that impressive. A lot of our best signings in the Abrahimovic era were completed before Mourinho came to the club - Robben, Cech, Drogba etc.

But we did have a fee agreed with Atleti for Torres, and Abrahimovic did force through the Shevchenko transfer, forcing Mourinho to switch to a formation he's never wanted to use in his career, to accommodate both Drogba and Shevchenko.

Mourinho donated his Ballon d'Or to Sir Bobby Robsons cancer charity, and said what a massive influence Sir Bob was over him.

Mourinho is now officially 'alright' by my books. 🙂

    4-4-2?

Personally, i don't get what his problem is, he's basically playing as a striker as it is, with our front three inter-changing. He gets more time on the ball starting off out wide.

But surely it makes more sense to put Gerviniho through the middle than Walcott. Realistically if you think about, Walcott should not be allowed to play in any position. He is always lacking in some requirement. But he is a decent enough player so that would be a tad harsh

tbh i'd downgrade a striker and boost your mids.

you'd prob get 80% returns from a 9ish point striker (dzeko, adebayor, suarez) vs an 11+ point one, and you're likely to get 200% returns on a 9.5 mid vs a 5 point mid.

although i guess you'd have to do a little more juggling to make that work.

Bit the bullet & went for the wildcard this GW. Would really appreciate a wee RTM folks:

    Krul
    Simpson, Bosingwa,Kompany
    Silva(VC),Barton, M.Petrov, Nani (MID)
    Adebayor,Aguero(C), Rooney

    Bench: Vorm, Jones, N.Dyer, J.Taylor

Who is J. taylor? Other than that, looks decent, only thing you might want to consider is Arsenal/Liverpool coverage.

Sorry typo, was supposed to be N. Taylor of Swansea 🙂

Have wanted to bring in some Arsenal/Liverpool cover but other than RVP who's overkill with my frontline & Adam who's out & may feature less with SG back, can't think of any I'd actually want to bring in, strange times we live in!

      Solid team.

I'm assuming J.Taylor is actually N.Taylor (keyboard aim slightly off).

      Only thing I'd do is

Jones/Kompnay to Brown (rotates with Simpson)

      and Barton to SWP

        Yes it was, typo 🙂

Had been thinking of dropping Kompany so I could bring in SWP over Barton but wasn't sure which cheapie to replace him with. Had been looking at Ward or Ferdinand, but Brown might be a good option too if Sunderland get their act together. Cheers!

Apologies for repost, but got lost on last page..

2 free transfers and not sure where to use them, so any suggestions would be very welcome!

    Krul, (Vorm)
Bosingwa, Enrique, Brown, S Taylor, (Woodgate)
Mata (vc), Silva, Brunt, (Dyer, Jarvis)
    RVP (c), Rooney, Adebayor

Ideally looking to use one, so I can sort RVP and Brunt/Jarvis out next week should they do badly again. Thanks!

i would love an article on the average expected points from players in certain price brackets.

eg: historically mids priced between 5-6 will score an average of 120 points, mids priced 6.1-8 will score an average of 150, etc etc.

it would be really interesting to see if the higher priced players are actually worth the extra points - might prove more (historically) efficient to have a bunch of 6ish point mids and 3 11+ point strikers.

Very, very different price brackets this season. In previous seasons you had loads of players below 5 who were worth getting (Adam, Barton etc) this season maybe only Dyer.
Similarly you could get Carroll or Odemwingie for cheap as a striker, this season only Leon Best so far has shown that the budget end of things is worth a gamble.

I know what you're saying though, and if they hadnt changed everything this season then it would be useful. But they have.
