Our Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations for a three-to-four week gameweek period, were given a full update for the new site layout this morning.

An aspect of the new design we haven’t stressed so far is that many site elements, particularly the Watchlist, are now more streamlined, enabling us to update more quickly and more often. We will be looking to keep on top of the Watchlist rankings on a daily basis now and very soon we will be adding a “Last Updated” date to the list so you can be notified when changes have taken place. We will also be generating more articles based on Watchlist movement when new entries or major changes occur. All good, then.

For now, however, let’s rattle through the standings and offer some reasoning behind our current thinking…

The goalkeeper rankings see very little movement with Swansea’s Michel Vorm and Newcastle’s Tim Krul still reigning supreme as they continue to return exceptional Fantasy value between the sticks. Krul has three home games in the next four to come, although would seem likely to have to rely on saves to earn his keep with Spurs at St James’ Park next. As for Vorm, three away games in four will test his mettle but again, saves and a home clash with Bolton in gameweek 10, should see him continue to offer value.

Below that pairing, Arsenal’s Wojciech Szczesny again offers an assured route into any potential Arsenal defensive returns – three strong Emirates fixtures in the next four affords a strong chance of clean sheets, despite continuing reservations surrounding the Gunners’ back four. Having withdrawn from the Poland squad with a back problem, we’ll be monitoring the Gunners stopper’s fitness- any indication he’s unlikely to make it and Szczesny will be replaced by Łukasz Fabiański in the rankings. Aston Villa’s Shay Given remains in our thinking as Alex McLeish’s unit display obvious defensive resolve, although we fully expect their unbeaten run to come to an end at City in gameweek 8. Wigan’s Ali Al Habsi and Norwich’s John Ruddy offer budget potential lower down our rankings as fixtures fall nicely through to November.

Liverpool’s Jose Enrique gets a temporary climb in our rankings following two consecutive assists and a clean sheet at Goodison. Like Arsenal, there are question marks over the solidity of the Liverpool back four but, with Norwich and Swansea at Anfield in the next four gameweeks, a clean sheet or two looks likely. Enrique’s threat from the left-flank will always be a factor, too.

There’s little movement below the Spaniard with the likes of Vincent Kompany, Jose Bosingwa and Steven Taylor continuing to offer potential. John Arne Riise’s ranking is starting to look justified too – he was a constant threat down the left for Fulham in their 6-0 drubbing of QPR and, of course, returned a second consecutive clean sheet.

Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs and Norwich City’s Marc Tierney are all climbers in the lower echelons of the rankings – all three present gambles in Fantasy terms but, if you’re searching for differentials – they fit the bill. Cahill was an immensely popular Fantasy signing following his stunning strike in the day one defeat of QPR but, ever since, has plummeted in ownership. Ironically, he is just about to embark on a set of fixtures that could see his returns improve. He’s still likely to need to find attacking returns to boast his points tally, however.

City’s David Silva and United’s Nani remain the top two in the midfield rankings – Silva’s team-mate, Samir Nasri, is now their closest rival. Nasri benefits from the uncertainty surrounding Rafael Van der Vaart’s role in the Tottenham side (see today’s Scribbles) to climb the ladder. Chelsea’s Juan Mata falls from grace somewhat having firmly played second fiddle to Frank Lampard’s hat-trick at Bolton. There’s no place for Lampard in our rankings right now with Mata still the preferred option in Chelsea’s midfield. Lampard’s price, as always, is a major stumbling block but, should Andre Villas-Boas continue to select him in midfield and Lampard continues to show form, we may have to re-consider.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey is a big climber and a very intriguing option in midfield given Arsenal’s forthcoming run of opponents. Featured in last week’s Numbers Game article for Members prior to his strike at White Hart Lane, Ramsey continues to produce returns and keep Mikel Arteta in the shade. With Theo Walcott still proving a major frustration, Ramsey is the sole representative of Arsene Wenger’s midfield in our rankings.

Lower down we’ve got the prospects presented by Swansea’s Scott Sinclair, Villa’s Barry Bannan and Norwich City’s Wes Hoolahan – all of whom have emerged in recent weeks. Wigan’s Victor Moses certainly hasn’t done himself justice of late but we’re sticking by him in the Watchlist – with Bolton, Fulham and Wolves in the next four, he has every chance repaying our faith in the coming weeks and making a mockery of his budget 4.9 price tag.

Up front, Arsenal’s Robin Van Persie continues to top the rankings, holding off Wayne Rooney, who faces far stiffer opposition in the coming weeks. Sergio Aguero’s injury has him drop a place with Liverpool’s Luis Suarez jumping to third.

Below this pack we have familiar names, with Chelsea’s Daniel Sturridge perhaps looking the strongest option; his two goal salvo at the Reebok surely cemented his starting role on the right of the Chelsea attack and, at just 6.5 in the FPL, he looks a very strong third striker option for the coming weeks at least.

We’re still waiting on further confirmation of Emmanuel Adebayor’s reported hamstring woes – right now he holds just above Sturridge. Gabby Agbonlahor’s showing in the 2-0 win over Wigan keeps him simmering, with Fulham’s Bobby Zamora and Newcastle’s Demba Ba offering options for those looking to plunder the mid-price market. Fulham’s Andy Johnson, at just 5.1 in the FPL right now, looks your real budget contender.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm beginning to think he's a good option again now. Bolton have good fixtues and he's just bound to score again soon.

He's always been a good FPL prospect if you've got him at the right time and got rid at the right time, as you know you're not getting many cleanies.

cahill was a bit like o'hara last season as he got lots of bps so when he didn't score or get a clean sheet he could still get 4 or 5 points. if he doesn't get bps under the new system i find it impossible to justify him over boyata at 4mil. boyata's goal v chelsea wasn't a one-off, he's scored a few for man city in cup games too.

Let's just say I'm resorting to unorthodox methods to improve my ranking, and it is not working.

Anyway both of those options went down the bin. Still think Jenkinson is such a mistake to be priced at 5.5. How can he be 1m more than Johnny Evans, who is in a better team, with a similar chance of playing and with more experience etc.

I think he's a smashing pick if you have a good long term plan with your other defenders, because you will want to play him in every home game but no away game.

Here's a tip from me: get rid of Moses.

Let's face it, he's on 0 goals and 0 assists and 0 bonus points after playing 90 minutes in each of the 7 opening games. On top of that, he's not even very good!

Can't we put Moses' failure down to the fact that Wigan have been largely pretty awful? One win, 5 goals scored. Isn't there a chance, just a chance, that if Wigan improve, Moses will start chipping in and justify 4.9?

Looking at Wigan's fixtures, if they don't improve over the next six then they'll be down by Christmas.

Absolutely, Wigan have been crap which has hindered Moses. I'm just personally not convinced that they will improve that much. I really really hope they will.

Anyway, I think it's good to have some patience with the players you believe in but sticking with him after 7 blanks might be overdoing it a bit in my opinion.

For 0.5m more you get the security of penalties from Ben Watson, who has also beaten Moses EA PPI score in 5 gameweeks out of 7. I'd probably be more interested in him if I wanted to have a punt on a Wigan player I think.

I reckon you'll soon be alone on the Moses moped Mark 🙂

I guess it just boils down to this - are there any £4.5m players that are better? I already have Dyer and just feel it's a waste of a transfer to get another player in of that value as most of the time he is on my bench anyway. Probably a foolish pick at the start of the season but feel my 1/2 transfers every week are better used on higher value players.

This is exactly the point. A players Fantasy potential isn't just price and position on the pitch, it's how the team around him is playing. As Wigan are currently dreadful, Moses can't be considered a good pick, because they'll probably still lose their favourable fixtures. (watch him now score a brace next week).

It's not just the fixtures, it's that he's the main focal point in an attacking team - when Arsenal score, you expect him to be involved. He's immune to rotation, too, it's just a shame (from an FPL point of view) that Arsenal are playing shite.

I've got both 😉 To be honest, it's his performances in past seasons that's convincing me to stick with him, and that's probably not good management. I'll probably give him til my planned GW11 WC, if he hasn't scored a few by then it's goodbye.

I'd agree. It doesn't seem right that he's top, albeit that he has the best fixtures. I (try to) back form every time. Further, the only time Arsenal have "run riot" this season was against 10-man Bolton (who were also low on confidence).

Also, Rooney's fixtures aren't exactly woeful. Liv (big rivals, ManC (big rivals), Eve (old club)... if they don't motivate him to perform, nowt will. Roon should be top in my book...

I'd put all four of Rooney, Aguero, Adebayor and Suarez ahead of him.
They are all in better for and only Rooney out of them has 'bad' fixtures but he scores against whoever

RVP is on pens, fk's, corners and the teas at half-time. He has three very strong home games in four. Arsenal may fail miserably over those games but I don't think that will be through a lack of goals. Whether RVP fetches more than Rooney, Aguero and Adebayor - only time will tell but, personally, if I was making a team from scratch today, I'd go RVP over the next four GW's for sure.

Them teas at HT don't half make the difference!!

In all seriousness though - it's each to their own, subjective judgements etc. It's what this game is all about!!!! If we all knew who was going to be the best going forward, it'd be a pretty dull game...

Luckily, the man tweets in Spanish as well as English...Contractura muscular is roughly translated to muscle spasm or muscle cramp. Like, for example, when you wake after sleeping on your neck wrong and you have a cramped neck. It's that kind of pain. I don't think it's serious, nor do I think he'll aggravate it on international duty. My opinion? Anyone dropping either Aguero for RVP are terribly pessimistic...but, only time will tell... If Arsenal's midfield doesn't work, RVP doesn't work. Bacaray Sagna doesn't work, crosses don't work, RvP doesn't score goals. Arsenal have NOT found their footing yet, and I'm not so sure they'll score half the goals you think he'll score, Mark ;). Hopefully though, he shuts me up and we can have a sure striker again after these Rooney and Aguero injuries...

Nope, just Ade for me. Harry will be playing 4-4-2 with Ade and Defoe up top, pushing vdV to right midfield, which, according to the article on here earlier, the Dutchman is non too pleased about. That's enough for me to ignore him for now...

VDV said he thinks it won't be a regular occurrance.
I think they will play 4-2-3-1 with VDV in the middle behind Adebayor.
But even on the right midfield, he scores goals and goes infield....it doesn't matter where he plays he is a good fpl player

Could someone explain to me the difference between Mata and Silva from an FPL perspective? Obviouslyy I'm biased here 😉 but it seems t me that they fulfil essentially the same job on the field and are likely to get very similar scores, and yet Mata is considered to be so-so whilst Silva is essential. Anyone else agree?

I think the difference is that Silva's play has translated so well into FPL points this season. He's at 6.9 PPG to Mata's 3.8.

It's probably more fair to compare the Silva of last year to Mata right now, in the way that I think Mata will be better the more games he's played for his new club.

Even if Mata lacks final product compared to Silva (which I don't think he will over the course of the season) he makes up on with DFK's and Corners

The advantage of being on corners is nullified by that player not being in the box. I mean how many goals do we really see scored direct from a corner.

-1. its like saying that taarabt does a similar job for qpr so why not get him? as i said before, mata needs to adapt to the league first. mata is like the silva of last year. silva's got more experience in the premier league now and is ready to become one of the best in the world. as for mata, there is some way to go for him. both are quality but silva is a safer choice fpl-wise

😯 it is nothing like saying Taarabt does a similar job, ridiculous comment.
Mata has played well, and has created plenty of chances, he (on most occassions) plays up the pitch and I have no doubt he will be 1 of the top mids come seasons end.

Based on what? Their are arguments against all four!
VDV - Injury prone as f***, was played on the right last week and if that continues he could be a dodgy pick.
Young - Very hot and cold, also almost 1.0 more than Mata.
Nani - Could be a rotation risk.
Nasri - Had Aguero not got injured last week, nobody would have Nasri come GW8...

take it easy,im just giving my opinion. mata could prove to be class but right now, most of the ppl prefer the guys i mentioned because:
-mata's new to the league and it would be HUGE risk to pick him instead of the others.
-avb does not play him 90 mins so why not go with the guys that will get more time on the pitch?(nasri is a roation risk but all the others are starters)
-he'll get the assists(mata) and constantly score 4-7 points but he doesnt promise u big socres like nani or vdv
p.s: apart from just vdv may be, all of them will probably score more goals too.

                    - Have a look at the scores when Mata has been subbed off, only against Man U did he play the full 90, and that is because the game was not wrapped up or in control.
                    - VDV hasnt played the full 90 since GW3.
                    - Apart from VDV? haha what? VDV will probably be the top goalscorer out of them.

      Silva: 2 goals, 5 assists, 5 bonus = 48 points
      Mata: 1 goal, 2 assists, 0 bonus = 19 points

A lot of that is to do with a couple of goals for Silva though and a couple of incomplete games for Mata. I agree about Silva of last season, but even so I see them both as supplying regular assists going forward, and with the new bonus shitstem(TM) that equates to 5-6 pts each evry week.

Silva's the main man in midfield at City, most of City's good work seems to go through him. Mata hasn't been so involved in games from what I've seen. Would be interesting to see how many touches per game each player has had, I'd guess Silva has a lot more.

Also, Silva has had a few scores over 5, Mata has none.

My brief comment on this is its worth remembering this is only Mata's first season in the Prem, considering that he's settled in quite well compared to Silva as around this time last year people were writing off Silva. Currently its hard to disagree SIlva is the better option. I have Mata but ill trade him for Silva in a few weeks when Cities fixture look pretty damn sexy.

Yep. With time, Mata will be a great FPL player. He is settling faster than Silva did and keeps putting those key passes in.

For now though, Silva remains the better option, as the first few gameweeks have just about shown.

Quite honestly, I would like both in my side...

    aguero rooney adebayor

team 2 definately better but is it worth it to do the 2 transfers this early? ramsey and enrique likely to go up soon and i have 0.0 in the bank after the transfers so i wont be able to get this team after tonight or tomorrow night. please help guys

replacing an arsenal player WITH an arsenal player might not work for u. arteta's got no ints. so he shd be fresh next week.
enrique's got some easy ones after manu
      my suggestion:
      johnson>petrov
      adebayor>sturridge
that is if u really want petrov. current team looks good, no real need to get rid off ade but if u desperately need bolton cover only then will u have to ship out adebayor

feel like arteta plays too deep and the 2.0 saved on him to ramsey will be much better used as b.johnson is useless and woodgate is bound to get injured. enrique and petrov have awesome fixtures

arteta - ramsey = saves 2.0 ramsey slightly more threatening
        b.johnson - petrov - definately an upgrade
woodgate - enrique - definately an upgrade

so all seems to point to good transfers no?

I'm debating switching from Arteta to Ramsey next week too. It's essentially a free move for me (have no others planned this coming gw), and makes sense as Ramsey is quite a bit cheaper and is playing further up the pitch (better FPL returns)...

Also, I'm not sure it's worth taking a points hit before the international break is complete. If you make the transfers and then Rooney Aguero and Adebayor are unavailable next time around you'll be pretty frustrated...

    Ward/Bosingwa/Kompany/R.Taylor/De Laet
    Young/Silva/Petrov/Jarvis/Mata
    Agbonlahor/Zamora/Aguero

    Bank 1.6

I have 1 free transfer for this GW but I have no idea what to do with it. I was thinking of trying to get VDV in at the end of the international break but I wasnt sure if I should get rid of Young or Mata, plus this comment about him being out wide isnt very comforting.

As i've said before, Moses had NOR, swa, QPR first 3 games of the season - can't get easier than that? Only 7 points...

I'll play him at home to an out-of-form Bolton side leaking goals and lacking confidence only because it's a more favourable fixture than say City-Villa, Liverpool-Utd, Chelsea-Everton etc.

    Expect another 2 points.

plus bale will go 11,2,2,3,1,5,2,6,2,2,1,2,12 but modric is more a 5,5,3,7,3,9,6,7,4,2,8 type of guy which i like a lot more. but for 8m i just find that nasri, silva, young, nani offer that captain option for 2m more so i would rather go 10 plus 5 than 8 plus 7 on 2 players. if that makes sense

Currently have Zamora, Agbonlahor and Aguero. I'm looking to find a way to get Suarez in next GW but I dont know who to get rid of for him. If Aguero is healthy, it looks stupid for me to get rid of him but both Zamora and Agbon have great fixtures coming up, boy does my head hurt. I guess I could do Aguero>Suarez for GW9 seeing as how Man City are playing Man U but I would want Aguero back after that. Only solution I can think of is emailing FPL and asking them to grant me a 4th striker position lol.
