The international break has afforded us another chance to put more teams from further afield under the microscope for our European Fantasy managers partaking in UEFA Fantasy Champions League action. This time, we’re taking a look at FC Porto…

The side that Andre Villas-Boas mastered to the Primeira Liga, Europa League and Portuguese Cup treble last year have- aside for a recent stumble in Russia- so far carried on in pretty much the same vein

The Tactics

There may appear, on paper, to have been a gaping loss at the Dragao as the Portuguese champions lost not only their commander in chief but sold their star player, Radamel Falcao, to Athletico Madrid for record sum.

The end result, though, has been a fairly seamless transition despite cashing on over 50 million Euros of prime talent. Promoting from within, both on and off the pitch, has afforded Porto stability- new manager Vitor Pereira has pretty much stuck with the formation and tactics that lead the club to glory last season.

UEFA Average Position Map

As shown in the graphic above, and particularly in these UEFA-sourced average positions, it’s the same 4-3-3 as to which Porto deployed season – just with a slight change of personnel from before.

The back-four pretty much chooses itself with Rolando (4) and Nicolas Otamendi (30) the rocks at the centre, protecting Helton between the sticks. Alvaro Pereira (5), rumoured to have been high on Villas-Boas’ wish-list, and Jorge Fucile (13) are given plenty license to roam forward from the flanks – just like we’ve seen Jose Bosingwa and Ashley Cole do these first few weeks at Stamford Bridge. In fact, for those uninitiated on Porto, using the current Chelsea template makes for fair comparison.

Fernando (25) is the destroyer and shield for the back-line, allowing the full-backs license to forage forward – the part played by Raul Meireles or John Obi Mikel. A good player, but not so much a fantasy investment even at 5.0; the new “recovered balls” bonus will be his main ally.

In front of this screen a midfield pairing of Joao Moutinho (8) plus a.n. other can then be found. Last season Fredy Guarin was a mainstay but new signing Stefan Defour (35) has put paid to that lockdown, as the two jostle for time on the turf.

One Columbian striker has left to leave his more youthful compatriot -James Rodriguez (19) has come to the fore this season. Rodriguez is now regularly employed on the left of the front three but can be just as equally found central with Silvestre Varela (17, in top diagram) reclaiming his spot out wide if the call comes.

Kleber (11) was signed for just a couple of million Euros and has taken the role of the departed Falcao as the lead striker, with Hulk (12) continuing in his spot barraging in from the right wing as he did so successfully last season.

The Ones To Watch

Helton: Borne out of the Fabian Barthez school of goalkeeping you sometimes feel you can’t trust Helton as far as you can throw him. Luckily, he throws himself about the pitch just as much and will duck and dive for all his worth to try and keep sheets clean.

Rolando: With his central defensive partner a cool 1.0 more in price you’ll be looking at Rolando to offer a more cost-effective route into the Porto defence.

Joao Moutinho: The orchestrator. The architect. The puppet master. Moutinho dictates the run of play for the Portuguese champions and at just 6.0 is a relative bargain.

James Rodriguez: 6.5 for this “midfielder” is verging on theft. His talent and disposition means he is almost certainly worth a few million more. Think Daniel Sturridge at Chelsea but with the extra points for being classified as a midfielder. A downright snip of an option who is well worth considering.

Hulk: The player may have been named as such because he looks like Lou Ferigno, but he plays just as the name suggests too. A beast of a forward who plays with a power and ferocity that makes his 9.0 worthy of consideration- just don’t make him angry.

Kleber: A real bargain at just 6.5 and leading the line for the Portuguese champions. Do half of what his predecessor Falcao did in Europe and Fantasy managers will be rolling in the points. The only caveat is going to be his fitness leading into the coming weeks. Having damaged his collarbone in the defeat at Zenit last gameweek a prognosis on a return, as of yet, is something we’ve been unable to find.

Nor, wba, SWA, (GW 9,10,11) Keep him for those 3 games surely? There is no basis whatsoever in saying that an in-form striker has a "max" output of only one goal or assist per game

I sold him and regretted it as soon as I confirmed the transfer. True he's not a clinical finisher but he's a friggin machine and should return points consistently all season. Double figures in goals and assists is a fair prediction imo.
Watch Gerrard help him take it to the next level too.

Wba has more potential than Swa at home. They play possession football, not good for Liv, And my other strikers at the same time Aguero/ Rooney/ Sturr/ RVP will have much better fixtures and potential at the same time. The fantasy value for Suarez has seriously decreased for me atm. He simple can't explode and is in a no go area. He is not budget striker, not an expensive one. No other strikers in his price range, so he can't be swapped/ changed easily and he breaks the balance of the team pretty much at the same time.

Fair points. He's not captain material & sturridge, adebayor, agbon etc. offer potentially more bang for your buck. I wouldn't say he's a no go, he's a safe option that will consistently bring the points. If pool win your almost guaranteed a goal or assist from suarez.

Fair enough Daniel. I only stayed up this late watching Paraguay v Uruguay (injury time equalizer btw) to make sure Suarez didn't get injured (he didn't!)

I've just done Rooney OUT Sturridge IN (I think Sturridge might rise tonite)

Gives me cash to do Brunt to any big price MID next week (Vdv if he's still in the team)

Sturridge won't rise IMO tonight. That Rooney to Sturridge is brave transfer, cause I simply don't see must haves in mid. except Silva. I might bring Sturridge too, but atm thinking to bring him for the qpr game. I am not certain what kind of game will Che show in those home games against Liv and Ars. Last year we lost at home against Kenny. I don't know what will AVB do in so called derbies but at home. He went pretty open at Old Trafford, I need to see how we will lineup in this games. Everton won't be easy too.

On the other hand if is shown that DVD is a rotation threat that he won't be my Tot cover, so I might reconsider Ade for third striker before Sturridge, as much I don't like/ hate Ade.

P.S. Suarez can't control himself, he'll get red sooner or later. 5 yellows too. Have anybody saw that incident with Adam on the training?

Told u one goal or assist that's max... If he is extremely in a mood he could give us goal and assist, but will gel it with some yellow almost certain. And that shots of target all the time are killing his bonus potential. I don/t need to repeat those numbers for him and Carrol when Andy got the 3 BP and Luis got nothing!! Bad days...

In the midst of all the Ramsey rage...

...what happens when Diaby (16th) and Vermaelen (22nd) are fit, and there are 4/5 strong contenders for the midfield 3

Arteta, Ramset, Diaby, Song, maybe Frimpong

Diaby could possibly play in the more advance role, while I must admit I never understood why Wenger played him in that more advance role, but still Ramsey is better quality than Diaby. All of the others are playing in deeper role, so I assume he is safe. We need him for the next 3 home games in the next 4 after all. And thinking how Wenger man are injuring I wonder will all of them be fit at the same time. Why mentioning Verma in that midfield battle?

P.S. I backed u up on the previous page, I hope u've read.

Probably because Diaby didn't know what he was doing...he always looks lost and clumsy playing. There is no room for Benayoun on the squad if everyone is healthy. Song, Arteta, Ramsey is the midfield Wenger will use. Unless he is an idiot. Which he tends to be. Sorry, no serious disrespect to Wenger...just disappointed with him lately.

I am sure he can't hold the momentum he had at the beginning of the season. But he'll stay average, which is all I ask for: consistency. RvP? choke and injury despite favorable fixtures. My thoughts exactly Gaz. I'm planning on keeping him off my squad for a couple of gameweeks anyways. Even if he does recover by the beginning of next week, doubt Mancini and the crew are naive enough to not ease him back to play. Groin injuries are the worst...coupled that with a hamstring in high school, was out for months.

Aguero almost certainly out injured, but I could see him being rested anyway against Villa, so he's fully recovered for more tricky games where City will need their best options. City's midfield should be more than enough for Villa.

I'd say those are good gambles, I took them. Can you imagine City's midfield??! David Platt says they aren't afraid to shake things up with the players they've got. I'm betting on Silva and Nasri playing 90 mins, Dzeko the loner up top. Even with Villa's form, it's going to be tough to keep up against that.

Sturridge has started every match under AVB when he's been healthy....he has a lil crush on him. And he fits AVB's game dynamics more than old Drogba does...no doubt will Sturridge be coupled with Anelka though. I'd bet on it.

      3-0 for me.

I think Sturridge will play. he's been favoured as a winger as Villa-Boas has publicly stated, he's playing great aswell so it would be hard to see him being dropped. Drogba will be the target man with certainly Sturridge on the wing and maybe Anelka playing off Drogba....
well i'm hoping anyway as i have the Drogster!!

Badly. Atm we seem limited to suarez coming deep to get the ball, then creating some magic or going direct though downing. Adam's done alright but we badly miss gerrard's energy, link play and football IQ. He has that rare ability to see things in slow motion. Can see him bringing another dimension to our attack and bringing the best out of suarez, downing, kuyt, bellamy, carroll etc.

Miles behind in my mini league due to lack of Man utd coverage before GW11 wildard. I'm considering a slightly different strategy to try and claw back some of the points. I'm considering sacrificing one big hitter to improve the quality of my bench. I've always played with at least 3 sub 5m players as easy bench options. But this means that often, my better players still have to play the horror away fixtures, ie city, man u, chelsea, stoke. By having a stronger bench, i could bench the likes of Suarez away to city, happy in the knowledge that I could have a 6-7 million player playing at home to cover.

This strategy also helps manage rotation and injury threats.

I'm aware that this decreases my captain choices. But is it worth a go?

4th year here. Cash distribution rules which I am trying to follow. Many times in the past I went against them and payed the price. Now is the same case.

First people forget that they need to bench one of the front 8 every week. I had wonderful increasing in the ranking when I had Zigic doomed to my bench injured for the last 8 games or something. This year and before Zigic I had significant points on my bench which must be considered when playing the value game. The cash distribution should be something like this IMO (for the front 8)

One 4.5 mid always, like last year Barton, this year Dyer. If u must but if u must only make him be your 5mil 5th mid. Then is the 4th mid who should rotate with the 5th one. Its advisable or if he is someone like Adam last year u r playing him whole season and for 5mil. Bargain is that what I call it. Don't go in to the trap of many people benching him for Liv away and he gets double figure points. But for now there isn't that kind of mid this year.

Then 2 big hitters in mid. potential captains. That's clear. Check the fixtures always for them. Fixture proof, season keepers, yeah right 😆 One budget striker. God I miss Carroll, Later in the season when u have more cash the third one could be more expensive, but I am saying more, not extremely expensive.

Than there is the deal with finding the 3 midfielder who u will play every week, in the past Barry, Young, DVD, Nani around 7 - 8 mil, still lacking that kind of option this year, but there are plenty of 6m guys which can help us save some cash

Enjoy, I am in the mood 😀
      Cheers.

Keep Dyer, bin Moses. If you have RVP already then get Petrov otherwise get Ramsey.

    Day 11

Had this wild idea of ridding Aguero for RVP today. To do this, I had an even wilder thought of downgrading Dyer for, wait for it, Ferguson 😯

Surely you have other possible downgrades?

The only one is Enrique but that will put paid to my 4 (+1) defensive strategy 😕

          Jeez... yeah I see now.

That's some tight fit you got there. Another possible move is Adebayor to Gabby or Sturridge.

Personally I am a Mata atheist - so he would be going for me. Then you could also upgrade either Moses or NDyer later.

            Cheers Gaz.

Funny how Mata polarises opinions on here. 😕 Moses is the same I guess.

I feel that Mata represents the best way into the CHS fixtures at a reasonable price. After 3 and a half games, I feel it is too early to judge.

Not really a Gabby fan as he's sure to run out of steam at some point and Sturridge is wait and see at the moment.

It's getting that .6 to afford RVP is the dilemna 😕

Re: Mata, I can understand why people here doesn't really rate him as an FPL prospect. He always comes deep to collect the ball and Lamps and co always forcing to shoots on key positions (when sometimes making that extra pass is the better option). That said I have Mata myself and probably wait a few more weeks :s

He may come deep but he has a free role upfront and is on set plays.

this aguero injury however is makin me consider doin Aguero to Sturridge and next week Moses to VDV/Nasri.. no hits
    team would be
    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Kompany Bosingwa Enrique (Brown Simpson)
    Silva Mata Nani Nasri/VDV (Dyer)
    Suarez Adebayor Sturridge

go for it or too risky?

The only problem with that move, Keith, is that it leaves a ton of money in the bank.

Money you are most likely going to end up spending.

Which then causes a problem when you want Aguero back.

I'm looking to go Aguero to RVP for next couple of weeks simply because RVP costs more which means that I don't have to worry about how I'm going to finance bringing Aguero back when I want him.

Its always easier to downgrade than upgrade.

With your MF you could afford to bench him and play 3-5-2 anyway.

yeah.. guess benchin him is cool.. really like the look of baines from next week though.. thought i could get petrov and baines in for brown and dyer with the money from aguero to sturridge.. would have to ignore vdv and nasri though

You really have no need for Baines as you already have 4 better FPL points scorers in your defence.

I think you could do with Rooney or RVP in there if you're going without Aguero. You need to think about it though. If you have VDV do you need Adebayor too? If you have Mata do you need Sturridge too?

One or the other in either case leaves you with more options to play with. If you have the money to do it I'd do Aguero to RVP this week and hope Adebayor makes it for the Newc game.

      Keith,

I'm just not a fan of Nasri - I think other players steal his points. VDV and Addebayor? Maybe too much.

My concern would be the lack of RVP and Roonpig upfront.

I'd sit and wait on Sturridge:

      1. to see if continue to start
      2. his new wide position may affect scoring

Like you, the uncertainty over Aguero is causing a bit of a rethink this week.

agree.. the other option is baines(who i fancy soon) and petrov.. both of whom i can get in for dyer and brown with the cash from the aguero to sturridge move.. over 2 weeks course..

    WC Team A:
    Vorm, Krul
Kompany, Bosingwa, Enrique, N Taylor, Simpson
Nani, Silva, Sinclair, Taarabt/Ramsey (undecided as may have Taarbs for B'Burn game then swap for Ramsey following week) B Johnson
    Sturridge, RVP, Rooney

    WC Team B
    Same as above except:
    Begovic for Vorm
Dyer for Sinclair and Petrov for Taarabt/Ramsey

I desperately want Begovic instead of Krul!!!

I think all of your options in A beat your B options!

Not sure on Taarabt/Ramsey and B Johnson - I guess he is your $ saver

Ya, if only I could put Begovic in the 'A' team though!!

The thinking on Taarbs is that he could come good against Blackburn then I could sell him for Ramsey next week (same price) and then get Aguero back for RVP after the Manchester Derby, thus having Arsenal cover in Ramsey.

Could go Petrov for Sinclair in team A too as Bolton fixtures look good.
