Not surprisingly, Robin Van Persie leads our gameweek 8 Captain Poll, although the margin between him and second placed David Silva is perhaps not as comfortable as expected.

By his standards, the Dutchman was anonymous at White Hart Lane in the 2-1 defeat last time out and a quiet Euro Qualifier for Holland against Sweden in midweek did little to convince that Van Persie is going into the gameweek with form. With struggling Sunderland travelling sheepishly to the Emirates, Arsenal’s skipper and talisman will surely be looking to boost his 3 league goal tally and carry the Gunners to a much-needed victory.

As for Silva, his class and form is undoubted. The impish Spaniard has been a mesmerising force in City’s midfield, pulling tricks from his repertoire to wriggle free of tackles and, more often than not, provide a killer end product to help feed City’s ravenous strikers. Alex McLeish may have plans to halt Silva’s ascendency as the Premier League’s outstanding performer this weekend; the odds are stacked against the Villa boss succeeding.

Behind these two, Wayne Rooney finds himself in an unaccustomed third spot in our poll, a position no doubt compounded by a testing trip to Anfield that arrives off the back of his dismissal in Montenegro. Rooney’s reaction to last week’s events will surely decide his returns from Saturday’s early kick-off – the Anfield faithful will be on his back, greeting every challenge that comes clattering his way. Rooney’s owners will hope that he’ll deliver an early reminder of his quality and form to help rid United of the ghosts of last season’s 3-1 defeat.

While Dirk Kuyt claimed a hat-trick in the corresponding fixture last term, it was Luis Suarez who was the architect of United’s downfall. The Uruguayan finds himself fourth in our poll, with memories of his performance still fresh. United will hope to welcome back defensive reinforcements in order to counter the movement and trickery of Suarez but, so far, the voting indicates that confidence in the United backline has yet to be restored – the expectation is goals at both ends.

Sergio Aguero’s fitness remains a concern and keeps him bubbling under in fifth place – should he be fit to face Villa, there’s little doubt that he will be set to be the major damage dealer. Noises from the City camp so far indicate that he may well sit out after a futile spell with the Argentina squad.

Daniel Sturridge, Rafael Van der Vaart and Frank Lampard offer strong differential options. It’s interesting to see that Lampard’s hat-trick at the Reebok last time out has immediately put him above the pecking order over Juan Mata when it comes to our poll. Mata is yet to deliver a return on the same scale as Lampard’s haul at Bolton – the Spaniard is surely set to be a slow burning Fantasy asset; we could yet see further evidence of that when Everton visit the Bridge this weekend.

With just over 970 votes registered so far, there’s plenty of time for opinion to shift. Visit the middle column of the homepage to throw your hat into the ring before end of play tomorrow.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Now, I know this team will bring up this question every week, but who to captain? Go with Captains Poll and go Silva? (who I currently have)
And also, bench order is important with Ade a doubt.
    Vorm
    Bosingwa Enrique Kompany
    Silva (C) Mata VDV Nani
    Suarez (VC) Adebayor Sturridge
    Given - Dyer Naylor Simpson
    Keep as is? Cheers

I agree, sound choices. I too am likely to captain silva. If he plays a single striker - which is likely flanked by silva and nasri then that is likely to benefit silva and nasri this week. Silva is safety first and if RVP does nothing - as I hope he does as I also don't have him - then this could bring in some welcome bragging rights this week.

If RVP scores loads then you and I are stuffed.

Why move either? Who else is goning to start this week centrally? Lukaku??? Save the transfer imho, and dump him when Torres comes back. Drogs could be just the differential, Sturridge does pass the ball too you know. At worst maybe Anelka would get a start centrally, but maybe the Chelsea fans here could shed some light here.

Kuyt took their last pen didn't he? I'm not sold on the essentialness of Suarez (maybe i'm just bitter as I had him for a while). if it was the old BP system he'd be a shoo in, but now he needs to score, and he seems to be very hit and miss in front of goal. I don't think he's worth any more than Adebayor.

I'll take VDV and Suarez all day long at this point in the season though, VDV coming into form and Suarez with awesome fixtures. If Adebayor wasn't a doubt it might've been a whole different ball game!

I am not sure what works best as we have only seen 4-4-2 so far this year.
Id like to see 4-5-1 as below and see how it goes...

In theory I think Ba up top with Arfa playing off him, and 2 of Marveuax, Gut, Obertan either side, infront of Cabaye (Dreamboat as Toon fans are calling him!) and Tiote.

I am just pleased as have some proper options in midfield! Def however is VERY thin on the ground!

Vs Spurs I would expect an unchanged side...and Marveux/Arfa getting 20 mins/half an hour.

    my current line is

    given vorm

    kompany hutton simpson boswinga enrique.

    silva mata ramsey dyer jarvis

    rooney suarez disanto

    who should i swap out?
or should i not even bring in shawcross?

what about the prospects of bringing in adeabayor?
    and any recommendations on jarvis?
    keep him or sell him?

What's the general consensus on Dzeko? I was convinced on trading him out then I saw his goal against France the other day. It was probably a one in a million shot but it's probably given him a good confidence boost. Here's the goal anyway:

there was a guy a couple of days ago with Ferguson and Gabbidon in his side with the temerity to slag off my side and reject my Ferguson jibes. Well, he now has just one left on his bench, and if he has Aguero or Ade as well then its possible pts hits time. This is why it is foolish to have Ferguson.

😀 The sweet taste of moral victory. Just means I have to play Warnock now. Big Q for me is do I take the hit to downgrade Ade to Sturridge /A.N. Other so as to free up funds to get in Kompany for Warnock in 2wks.

Taarabt must leave next week, hopeless QPR fixtures and doesn't contribute anything.

Interestingly, Thomas Müller of Bayern Munich revealed yesterday that he turned down an approach from Chelsea after the last World Cup, deciding that he'd have a better chance of developing as a player if he stayed in the Bundesliga. Bayern have also turned down an approach for him from Man United.

    is it worth doing:
    aders to sturge
    aguero to RVP

both may be out and the other 2 have home games.

    These are priobably known but

The comment search function doesnt work particularly well- some comments don't show up and it doesn't show replies or even number of replies.

The noitification of responses doesnt work either

When is the reputation function going live?
And the function to see people's bios?

    Vorm (Krul)
    Bosingwa, Kompany, Enrique (Jones, Simpson)
    Young, Silva, Mata, SWP, Ramsey
    Adebayor, Odemwingie, (Agbonlahor)

Already used my free on Ramsey to avoid price rise. 0.0m in the bank now

Adebayor >>> Sturridge for a hit hmm

Sturridge looks tempting, he will be handy in GW9 too. Save up the transfer this week, and use it next week to get rid of Odemwingie and (or) SWP.
        Isn't Young injured?
Your DEF is loaded, dg Jones to free up some cash. United have some tough fixtures. Vidic is back too so Jones maybe a Rotation risk.

Take the hit imo, Odem saga seems a bit odd to me.
