A Monday afternoon Scribbles brings reports of a return to training for Sergio Aguero. Joey Barton has harsh words for new team mate Adel Taarabt, Harry Redknapp admits he maybe should have started Jermaine Defoe at Newcastle and the PFA offer to intervene in the Luis Suarez-Patrice Evra row:

While the FA are set to investigate Patrice Evra’s claims of racist remarks allegedly made by Luis Suarez on Saturday afternoon, Suarez took to twitter last night to vehemently deny abusing the Frenchman during the 1-1 draw at Anfield. Today saw the PFA offer to mediate between the two, with chief executive Gordon Taylor keen to sort out the ongoing row:

It’s very disappointing to have two of our players from different countries at odds over a very serious issue. Only by having a full inquiry on such matters can we get to the bottom of it and try to make sure that such problems don’t arise again in the future. We need to try to cool down and reflect on what happened and to contact the FA and see what form their inquiry will take. It’s good to get this put behind us as quickly as possible instead of letting these things fester and become blown up again.

Arsene Wenger’s injury problems show no sign of letting up. Aaron Ramsey was ruled out of yesterday’s match against Sunderland due to a hamstring strain, while Kieron Gibbs was subbed off just minutes into the second half. Ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Marseille, the Gunners boss admitted:

Gibbs has an inflammation of his stomach muscles. He has a small chance of playing on Wednesday. Ramsey has a small chance of being in the squad. He had fatigue of his hamstring. I wanted to give him a breather – it would have been a gamble to play him.

With his first start for seven months marked by a goal in the draw against Man United, Steven Gerrard announced his return in typical style. The Liverpool skipper spoke of his satisfaction at being back amongst the starters and looks back to his old self ahead of the weekend home clash with Norwich:

It’s been a frustrating six months watching from the stands. I didn’t realise what I had until it was taken away from me for so long. I’m just delighted to be back, experiencing the emotions of big games again.

Man United have named their squad for this week’s Champions League clash with Romanian side Otelul Galati. Sir Alex Ferguson has left out Rio Ferdinand, Tom Cleverley and Rafael, with Nemanja Vidic back in the reckoning for the first time since the opening day of the season win at West Brom.

Reports today suggest Sergio Aguero trained ahead of the Champions League clash with Villarreal tomorrow evening. Micah Richards is also said to have returned to training- the right-back was subbed off in Saturday’s 4-1 over Aston Villa with a head knock but is expected to make the match, with City desperate for all three points.

Joey Barton has been more than a little candid when discussing Adel Taarabt over the weekend. Though Neil Warnock admitted he sometimes gives the Moroccan preferential treatment, Taarabt was benched on Saturday following his Craven Cottage walkout in Gameweek seven, and Barton didn’t mince his words when discussing the player’s contribution to the QPR team cause and subsequent disappearing act at Fulham:

I came here and was told he was a genius. But I’m yet to see it and I don’t know whether it is because he does not work hard enough, or whether he tends to sulk. This is the top level of world football and if you’re not prepared to work hard you will come up massively short. If I had Adel’s ability, I would not want to be coming up short having not worked hard enough….I don’t know if he got a lot of stick. He deserved some if he didn’t. It would have been nice if he had come in and apologised to the group for doing that, but he didn’t think he needed to. As one of the senior players, maybe he should have.

Harry Redknapp admitted he may have erred when announcing his starting XI for the game at Newcastle yesterday. The Spurs boss fielded Rafael Van der Vaart but despite the Dutchman’s goal, it was his replacement Jermain Defoe who caught his manager’s eye, with a brilliantly taken goal outside the Newcastle box:

It was a great finish. They’ll say I’m a clever manager- if I had been that clever maybe I should have started him. It is difficult, I have him and Rafa. Rafa didn’t look sharp today and looked a bit tired having been away with his country. I decided Jermain might give us a bit of sharpness.

Still on the subject of Spurs, Ledley King is set to be sidelined for “a while“ according to Redknapp, after picking up an abductor strain at Newcastle yesterday. The centre half departed the proceedings just before the half-hour mark and Spurs looked defensively shaky with replacement Sebastien Bassong alongside Younes Kaboul. With Michael Dawson and William Gallas still recovering from Achilles and calf problems respectively, Spurs options in central defence are thin on the ground right now.

Alex McLeish is hoping James Collins will overcome a groin problem ahead of next weekend’s home game with West Brom. The centre-half was an ever-present in the Villa starting XI up until last weekend’s trip to Man City and was sorely missed, with his side’s unbeaten record crumbling in the 4-1 Etihad loss.

After five straight losses, Mick McCarthy hardly has his troubles to seek but this afternoon brought bad news on the injury front for the Wolves boss. Steven Fletcher could be out for a month with a torn calf and McCarthy, having reverted to a 4-5-1 in his absence at West Brom yesterday, admitted his side lack a cutting edge without the Scotsman in the ranks. With Sylvan Ebanks-Blake also currently unavailable, Wolves’ striking options are thin on the ground right now.

    Keep or kick- Nasri?

I could always bring in VDV but he was pretty shite against newcastle this week. Nasri doesn't play always but when he does, he gets explosive scores and helped me get 17 points two weeks ago.

Very confused since they DO have easy fixtures coming up, such as Wolves.

So. Keep Nasri or bring in Gerrard?

He just wants his best players fresh for the game tomorrow night because they need 3 points to relieve the pressure, so if they do win I think there won't be as much rotation as the Villa game. Nasri, Silva and Dzeko all played 2 games over the break for their countries too.

I'd say it's probably worth it, yeah. If you had a strong bench I wouldn't, but Simpson might not play and the other two have very tough games.

Dzeko will probably only get a couple points.

I was all set to get bendtner but their midfield looks dire so what sort of service will he get

Where as chelsea are very creative and even if Sturrige only comes on as sub sometimes he could sell score some goals then.

    Taraabt -> VDV / Mata / Nasri

    Yay or Nay?

And who to choose from VDV / Mata / Nasri?

I'd go Mata. A lot of uncertainty over where VdV will play of if he will at all. Defoe's looking good, as is Adebayor. Tough choice for 'Arry.

Certainly not Nasri. Had one good half of a season - that is all.

Last couple times I've seen him he looked like he did for the whole second half of last season. When he's on form he's incredible, but that's too rare.

For me it's a choice between him and Silva. I'd choose Silva every single time.

Yeah he's a good keeper but that defence will let goals in. I'd consider RVP over Ronaldo, an RVP in form scores against anyone. Maybe Torres instead of Ronaldo or Messi because they take up so much of your budget.

Fantasy Champions League update: Bayern Munich now haven't conceded a goal in all competitions for 12 matches and 1108 minutes after a hugely impressive 4-0 victory over newly-promoted Hertha Berlin at the weekend. Three up inside 13 minutes, Bayern treated the rest of the game like a training match with the result that there are no additional injuries to report. Another two goals for Mario Gómez, although Jérôme Boateng, this time playing at right-back, may just have edged him for man of the match:

Bayern line-up against Hertha: Neuer; Boateng, Van Buyten, Badstuber, Lahm (78. Contento); Tymoshchuk, Schweinsteiger; Müller (73. Alaba), Kroos, Ribéry; Gómez (75. Olić)

Equally impressive were Borussia Dortmund, whose 2-0 away win at Werder Bremen moves them up to third in the table. In contrast to previous weeks, BVB made the most of their few chances, although goalscorer Perišić was then sent off for two yellow cards in the 47th minute.

Dortmund line-up against Werder: Weidenfeller; Owomoyela, Subotić, Hummels, Löwe; Großkreutz, S. Bender, Gündogan (74. Kehl), Perišić; Götze (89. Leitner); Lewandowski (88. Barrios)

Big problems at full-back for midweek though, with Schmelzer, Koch and Owomoyela injured and Łukasz Piszczek also uncertain to start. Key striker Lucas Barrios is also nursing a muscle strain.

Bayer Leverkusen escaped with a 2-2 draw at second-place Borussia Mönchengladbach thanks to a late equaliser from André Schürrle. Despite the two goals, they look very poor from an attacking perspective, and only Schürrle looks worth a gamble. Ten goals conceded in the last four games as well. Mutterings of discontent with coach Robin Dutt continue, not least due to his ineffectual tactical meddling throughout the game. Michael Ballack was substituted after an hour as he was losing his cool and looked very close to a red card. Seemed like such a modest lad at Chelsea too.

Leverkusen line-up against Gladbach: Leno; Balitzsch, Schwaab, Oczipka, Kadlec; Bender, Ballack (61. Rolfes); Castro, Schürrle, Sam (68. Derdiyok); Kießling

Injury doubt for midweek: Toprak (flu virus)

Little to say on the pitch about FC Basel, as they fielded a reserve team at the weekend in a comfortable 5-1 win in the Swiss Cup at lower league FC Schötz. Of the many players rested, only Streller was officially listed as having a knock (ligament damage), but he should be fit for Benfica. Long-term injured remain Yapi, Stocker and Voser. Off the pitch, however, no-one's sure how Basel will react to losing coach Thorsten Fink to Hamburger SV last week. Will caretaker manager Heiko Vogel go with the same formation as in Manchester or try to stamp his own authority on the team by changing things round?

Fabian Frei's been in excellent form recently for FC Basel, improving steadily after getting three goals and two assists in the first ten matches of the season. This is all the more impressive seeing as though he only played the full 90 minutes three times.

Bayern said last week that Robben had been advised to take 14 days absolute rest before restarting light training. The club have recommended that he either goes on holiday or visits the Netherlands. So they're not going to rush him back.

Don't know enough about CSKA to answer that. Leverkusen have won two, drawn one and lost one in the Bundesliga this season, but were solid enough defensively in their 2-0 victory over Genk. Defensive midfielder Bender and keeper Leno have been their best players. Just don't fancy them as an attacking force.

I got Drogba as differential two weeks ago and kept Moses since the start. Both were failed and I think it's best time to correct. Any comment on this plan please.

A: Drogba > Sturridge + 8.6m MF .... tonight before price rise and i believe Sturr price will rise twice this gw. MF could be Dempsey.

B: Drogba > Suarez + M.Petrov .... waiting until FA announce investigation result.

    Team:

    Nani - Silva - Mata - Moses - Dyer
    Adebayor - Drogba - RVP

    Alright brethren.

Fatty Horvath dropping to 3.9 in the UCL fantasy game has priced me out of a move for Alvaro Pereira (in place of the suspended Fucile ). So, next best option - as far as I can tell - for the next two weeks, would seem to be a United defender. Question is....

    Which one?

About to go out, so when I return I expect in excess of 50 replies to this massively important post. Ta.

“I was very upset. In 2011 you can’t say things like this. He knows what he said, the ref knows it, it will come out.

"I won’t repeat what he said, but it was a racist word, and he said it more than 10 times.

"He tried to wind me up. I won’t make a huge deal out of it, but it’s very upsetting and disappointing.”

Think I'm going to cash in on Bosingwa next GW. Downgrading to Shawcross will allow me to strengthen the rest of my team over the coming weeks. Just frustrated by the lack of Chelsea clean sheets and can't help but feel his introduction to the team is part of the reason for that.

Maybe you can help me out, I have 2.3 in the bank and was thinking about doing Bosingwa > Kompany next week and maybe upgrading Hoolahan. The whole game was pretty disjointed for the first hour, no-one played all that well. Just looking at the next 3 fixtures, though, Gerrard could do very well - set pieces and pens, too.

Seen his record at Valencia last year? If he can get anywhere near that for Chelsea he'll end with a massive score. 3 assists in 3 isn't bad either.

There are a lot of bad defences in La Liga. I've got Mata, and I'm happy with him, but I think Gerard will score better short-term.

I'd want to fix that defence if I were you. It's all right for this gameweek but has three defenders I don't like. What about Dzeko+Brown/Ward to Strurridge+Enrique?

Second option is good too tbh, but you'll suffer soon with that defence

It's clearly Matthias Sindelar, centre forward for the celebrated Austrian team of the 1930s.

Well done AP! Gold star for you.

Sindelar was also the star of the Wunderteam and one of the first centre forwards to drop back deeper, significantly changing the tactics forever. He died 35 years old, many believe he was murdered by Nazis for publicly mocking them.

It's great to say someone remembering Sindelar - the Austrian Wunderteam of the 1930s had incredible skill and swagger. Don't think you'll find many people nowadays adhering to the myth that he was murdered by the Nazis though. More prosaically, carbon monoxide poisoning due to a defective fireplace is the most likely cause of death.

Recent research has also uncovered that Sindelar bought a coffee house at a vastly reduced price from Simon Drill, a Jewish businessmen who had been forced to sell his property by the Nazis. The Nazis then tried to use the opening of Sindelar's coffee house for publicity purposes. Although Sindelar was very pro-Jewish, the story makes pretty grim reading.

The version I've read is that he paid 20 000DM for the coffee house, which was a fair price for the circumstances, and that he then was censured because he didn't want to put up Nazi posters.

Also that he refused to play for the unified nazi German team.

Got any good stuff I can read on him PB? I've mainly read the easy to find online stuff and the lengthy and exceptional episode about the Wunderteam in Inverting the Pyramid. Something about the culture of football being discussed in coffee houses in Vienna fascinates me greatly.

Do you speak German, Gargamel? Pretty much all of the English-language sources go along with the legend, I'm afraid. It was Peter Menasse in 2003 who started to question Sindelar's involvement - see page 7 onwards of the edition of the magazine NU (link below).

    Begovic, Vorm
Kompany, Bosingwa, Simpson (Gabbidon, A.Lopez-don't ask)
    Walcott, Sinclair, Brunt, OHara (Moses)
    RVP , Rooney, Sturridge

2 free transfers 4.8 in bank

Is City attacking coverage essential after next GW. My defence is shocking can I stick with it or will Simpson loose his place?

    A) Moses and OHara -> VDV and ReoCoker, next GW Walcott -> Silva
(can’t do it if silva rises)

    B) Moses and OHara -> Gerrard and Reo Coker

    C) Walcott and Lopez -> Gerrard and Enrique?

    D) Walcott -> Gerrard and save 1 transfer, hope Simpson plays.
    2 transfers next week

    E) Walcott and OHara and Kompany -> VDV AND Gerrard and 4.7 defnder (4 point hit)

    F) Other

    Opions please, thanks

I am not totally convinced about Gerrard either, but Liverpool have excellent fixtures, and I reckon he is the best option in the Liverpool midfield. He is on pens and Suarez looks like somebody who might earn a few penalties.

I'm thinking about getting Bassong in for Woodgate now King's out. Is this worth it? And does anyone know of a 4.5 midfielder worth a 4 point hit for the coming GW? I doubt there is one. I want to get rid of Ferguson.

Alternatively I can get 4.0 defender in for Woodgate and get a 4.9 midfielder for a 4 point hit. Any ideas? Guess Dyer looks best.
