Matchday Three of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game locked its doors shut for another fortnight yesterday evening. Here’s our round-up of the main highlights from Wednesday night’s eight fixtures:

Ukraine and Russia Ignite

If you’re hot on the twitter button you will undoubtedly have seen Jonathan Wilson (expert on pretty much all European football East of the Rhine) pine over this Eastern Bloc fixture and the highlights we’ve seen certainly back this up.

Shakhtar midfielder Willian returned from an injury picked up in the summer and saw the Zenit goalkeeper only able to paw his curling shot into the top corner after quarter of an hour. Roman Shirokov then snuck in by the last man and goalkeeper to grab an equaliser from virtually on the bye-line for the visitors – his day wasn’t complete though as later on his timid penalty was saved, costing him 2 vital fantasy points.

Just before the break, Luiz Adriano was on hand to turn a shoot instinctively into the bottom corner, similar to Jermain Defoe’s strike in Sunday afternoon’s tie at Newcastle. A calamity at the back for Shakhtar allowed Viktor Fayzulin free on goal to level affairs with a chip, ending the goalscoring at 2-2.

Fernando at the Double

With his domestic ban still carried on into this weekend’s trip to QPR, Fernando Torres used last night’s game against Genk to further suggest a return to form under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas. The Spaniard grabbed a double in the 5-0 romp over a weakened Belgian side, adding to an early opener from Raul Meireles as Chelsea equalled their biggest ever Champions League win with an eye-catching performance. Goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou completed the rout, in a match that saw both Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge given the night off with the game at Loftus Road in mind.

Tedium at the Velodrome

I did not enjoy this game in the slightest. If I could have a time refund I’d be first in the queue. However, from a purely Fantasy Football perspective, this moribund performance from Arsenal and Marseille at least gave the visiting side something to cheer about at the death. Something other than the final whistle, at least.

After missing last weekend’s Premier League fixture with an ever so slightly damaged hamstring, Aaron Ramsey returned with a 15 minute cameo from the bench and scored the solitary goal in a less-than-memorable game. As a result, the Welshman has been added to our FPL Watchlist with the Gunners’ kind run of domestic fixtures in mind. Carl Jenkinson picked up a knee problem in the game and will be monitored ahead of Sunday’s game against Stoke. Marseille have now carried their poor form from Ligue 1 into the Champions League but sit just one point behind the Gunners in second place in Group F.

Barca and AC Get The Job Done

Continuing the slow, inevitable march towards qualification to the knockout stages, both Barcelona and AC Milan notched relatively low scoring (2-0 in both games) victories over much weaker opponents, with all due respect, of Plzen and BATE respectively.

Lionel Messi was his usual magnificent best but only walked away from the game with a single assist despite all of his efforts. Some rather ridiculous quick one touch interplay between the Argentine and his team-mate Andres Iniesta resulted in the first goal while David Villa was on hand to slot home a loose ball after he was upended in the box 10 yards from goal.

Getting AC Milan into first gear was recent Barcelona departee Zlatan Ibrahimovic, when a rebounded ball into the box fell kindly for the big Swede to grab the first striker’s goal for our Watchlist. Not one to be outdone, Kevin-Prince Boateng scored a thunderous strike from outside the box.

All fairly routine but could, and perhaps should, have been more for both of these sides.

Apoel Stay Top With Stalemate

Another draw on Matchday Three sees Group G remain the tightest and most unpredictable of the lot. FC APOEL of Cyprus would likely have been written off by most long before the tournament began and yet, as things stand, after a 1-1 draw away at FC Porto yesterday evening, they find themselves in the plum spot ahead of Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian champions.

Things looked to be going according to predictions when Hulk rifled in another almighty whallop of a free-kick inside the first quarter of an hour. APOEL’s 4.1m striking bargain Ailton never read the script, though, and grabbed an equaliser just a short while after to keep his side at the top of the group.

Valencia Left Kicking The Dirt – And Themselves

After absolutely dominating the first half of their trip away at the BayArena, Valencia were ultimately left ruing their profligacy in front of goal as Bayer Leverkusen came back from a turgid performance and a goal behind to win the game 2-1. Valencia striker Roberto Soldado this time turned provider as his ball into the box allowed Jonas to give his side the lead from a few yards out.

The visitors then failed to capitalise on the advantage as they continued to spurn chances and not long after the break. Andre Schurrle and Sidney Sam made the Spaniards pay with two early goals in the second half turning the game on its head completely as Leverkusen wound out 2-1 victors and cemented their place in second place in the group at the half-way stage.

German Champions Crumble

Borussia Dortmund may have grabbed themselves a hard earned and much needed victory in the Bundesliga last weekend, but their new adventures in Europe continued down a far rockier road as Olympiakos soundly beat them 3-1.

Jose Holebas, Rafik Djebbour and Francois Modesto scored the goals for the home side with Robert Lewandowski having scored a lovely first half equaliser from a Mario Gotze cross.

Next Matchday’s reverse of this fixture becomes a must win for Dortmund if they stand any realistic chance of making it a step further. Good job We’ll have a Scout Report (see our previous instalments on Porto and Milan/Napoli) on their squad coming up next week.

AH Soop! Long time no, err, read I suppose.
I've started a blog you might like seeing as you like your retro games etc. Any ideas for the next golden oldie? I was thinking of Final Fantasy VII, Mariokart or Zelda.

Oh but to answer your question, I'm thinking about getting Forza, but probably wont as I'm not that into straighforward driving games (I like shooting turtle shells at other cars, what can I say), and there are soooooo many good games about to be released its gone down my priority list.

What about it? I've put a preview there based on the demo, going to review it after I've had a good stint on the game.
Will have a scouting section on the blog too if you come across any little gems.

    Given, Ruddy
    Kompany, Bosingwa, Simpson, Brown, Wilkinson
    Mata, Silva, Arteta, Moses, Dyer
    Rooney, Dzeko, Sturridge

2 free transfers with 2.4 in the bank.

    Any suggestions?

My plan is Dzeko and Arteta > Suarez and Ramsey

I really want to take a punt on Bale vs Blackburn but can’t afford it unless i don’t get Ramsey in. All suggestions welcome.

Still amuses me that anyone fancied Arteta

I bet there are very few Everton fans who backed him for returns at Arsenal.

            He peaked 4 years ago.

Yeah, was a stupid punt. I got a goal out of him though.

              Considering this...

              GW9
Dzeko and Arteta > Bale and Suarez
              1.6 bank

              GW10
              No transfers

              GW11
              Bale > Ramsey
              3.0 bank

              GW12
Suarez > Adebayor (or any other striker)
              4.0 bank

Leave mes transfers and funds to change my plans if needs be.

    Nani Silva Taarabt Cabaye
    Rooneey Suarez RVP
    Subs: Dyer Barnett De Laet

I am worried about Simpson losing his place but really want Taarabt out.

    So either
    a) Ramsey for Taarabt
    b) De Laet for Boyata

I've shot myself in the foot a little bit I think, I'm stuck with a 352 formation and I feel I'm too light on strikers.

    Enrique, Baines, S Taylor
    Silva, Nani, Sinclair, Mata, Gerrard
Ade & Agbon (Klasnic) (0.4 in the bank)

Next week I will be bringing in Aguero but it's how to get there and who to throw out. I can get 2.9 from replacing Baines with Warnock, but to upgrade Agbon I need 4.1 meaning it's Klasnic to AJ & an 8 point hit. I've been thinking of alternatives:

    1) Mata - Johnson & Klasnic to Aguero (3-4-3)
    2) Mata - Ramsey, Bianes - Kompany & Klasnic to Aguero (3-5-2 with agbon benched or 3-4-3 ramsey benched) 8 point hit
    3) A similar move with Nani being downgraded.

I want Baines this week but I have to ship him out next week really. You see my dilema!

Considering Nani is a better option, then you have Silva/Mata/VDV/Gerrard/Lampard all offering better cover with better fixtures for the next few weeks.
Im sure Young will be there come GW11 (when his fixtures ease up)
No point having him on there weeks beforehand

I think Nani is just a better option and Young hasn't had 90mins for a while.

I've had young 3 weeks and got about 3 points. I don't like explosive players, prefer the more reliable tickers like Silva or Nani.

Young > Gerrard was my transfer this week, what's the bet it backfires.

Does anyone on here have a non-generic team? It seems to me that every team is almost identical. I will only pick players who have a less than 10% ownership.

    Kenny/Schwarzer
    Evans/Luiz/Olleson/Woodgate/Santon
    Mata/Sinclair/Walters/SWP/Ben Arfa
    Hernandez/RVP/Drogba

Future plan is to replace Drogba with Torres.

I would recomend varying teams and going against the grain. I am on a good score and was my leagues top scorer last week. The trick is to beat the masses!

I would agree and I like your logic but I think it can be risky. I think a balanced approach with a mixture of risk and safety is good. Remember when all the popular players score well and you don't have them you will drop heavily down the rankings

    Any thoughts welcome.

    Current Team:

    Given, (Vorm)
Jose Enrique, Bosingwa, Simpson, (Ward #1), (De Laet #3)
Nani, Silva, Jarvis, Petrov, (Dyer #2)
    Adebayor, Sturridge, Van Persie

I'm thinking Jarvis out, VDV in.

Possibly also Sturridge out, Suarez in. (although Sturridge is in great form of late and QPR have shipped plently so far so not sure on this one.)

I know my defense is a little suspect, and there are questions over Simpson's prospects going forward but the points seem very much focused on the front 7 this season so want to make sure don't miss out on a big haul.

Well a bit. Santon puts both Simpson AND Ryan Taylor at threat, however I wouldn't read too much into Simpson being subbed off for Santon in the Spurs match. In that game Raylor was playing well, initially Spurs put Bale against him to exploit the weakness, but Raylor (strongly assisted by Jonas) did well to contain him. Bale switched to the left and Simpson wasnt playing brilliantly. He did ok but clearly looked tired, thats why he was subbed off for Santon. In addition to that, Raylor gave us an additional set piece threat which was useful when 1-2 down. Ameobi did well, and scored a cracker, but he is still a bit of a lazy bollocks so dunno if he will start.
I would be suprised if he changed the lineup, but not massively shocked if that makes sense.

Best is not a guaranteed starter - not only is Ameobi fit and looking sharp but Ben Arfa is also back from injury and could force a change to the formation for some games at least.

Santon will become a starter, we just don't know which side he will play yet. My prediction would be Simpson will play on Saturday but when we start shipping goals in the 5 games after that (see fixtures), it will come down to a choice between him and Raylor.

Going away tomorrow for the weekend so this is probably what I'm lining up with this weekend:

    Vorm
    Bos/Ward/Simpson
    Mata/Nani/VDV/Petrov
    Rooney(vc)/RVP(c)/Sturridge

    Subs: Ruddy/Dyer/Brown/DeLaet

My transfer was VDV in, Arteta out.

Will sort out DeLaet next week most likely.

Given the way the season has gone so far, it will probably only get about 30 points total.....

    Considering this…

    GW9
Dzeko and Arteta > Bale and Suarez
    1.6 bank

    GW10
    No transfers

    GW11
    Bale > Ramsey
    3.0 bank

    GW12
Suarez > Adebayor (or any other striker)
    4.0 bank

Leaves me the money for other transfers if need be.

Alternatively, i can downgrade Brown for Boyata and swap Arteta for vDV for a 4 point hit.
