You know the drill by now. You soak up the Scout Picks and then we deliver some alternative options that have slipped further down the Fantasy menu. Obscure dishes they may be, but these guys have the potential to reward returns to help close the yawning gaps on your mini-league rivals.

Joe Allen

Since Kemy Agustien suffered a hamstring injury last month, Joe Allen has impressed in his new starting role at Swansea; he has played every minute of the last four games, picking up two assists, as well as 2 Bonus Points for his man of the match performance against Stoke.

At just 5’7”, Allen is no midfield destroyer, but his naturally creative play and clever touch makes him an ideal pivot for the side. Allen sits slightly deeper in midfield, but because of the way Swansea play this means he sees a lot more of the ball; it doesn’t restrict him from getting forward and involved in the attacking build-up play. In fact, in the last 4 games, he has had more touches, made more passes in the opposition half, made more assist attempts and scored more FPL points than any other Swansea player, bar Scott Sinclair.

Although Sinclair is easily the most attacking player in the Swansea midfield, it is Nathan Dyer who has picked up the most investors over the first few weeks; his bargain price of 4.8m has seen him pick up over 13% of all FPL managers. Joe Allen in the meantime, has quietly snuck under the radar with just 0.5% but, at 4.5, offers potentially even greater value and looks a strong differential option if you’re struggling for cash.

Kyle Walker

The Spurs back four is in a sorry state right now, with injuries robbing Harry Redknapp of first choice centre-backs. The fact is, however, clean sheets are generally hard to come by across the board and once again Fantasy managers are left looking for attacking returns to help justify the outlay on a mid-price defender. In the case of Kyle Walker, there’s clear potential in this area.

Walker’s glorious match-winning strike against Arsenal provided the latest evidence of his threat in the opponents’ half and, with strong fixtures to come offering the potential of attacking returns, the right-back looks well positioned to contribute some points via his raiding runs down the flank.

A trip to Blackburn this weekend could be the start of those – Rovers’ home form is pretty poor and, with 10 goals conceded in four matches, you’d expect Spurs to come away with a couple, even if a clean sheet perhaps looks beyond them. At 5.4 in the FPL, Walker is a gamble but with just 1.8% ownership and the growing trend leaning towards investment in Stoke’s back four, he represents a clear differential.

Dedryck Boyata

While Bolton have had a few awful moments this season (yes Adam Bodgan, we’re looking at you), their place at the bottom of the table has more to do with a horrendous run of fixtures than anything else. As things start to ease up, however, we’re able to take another look at some of the potential targets in the Trotters’ ranks and with the entire team bar Gary Cahill and Martin Petrov being overlooked by the masses, there are plenty of differential options to consider.

Dedryck Boyata looks a solid starter and has the potential to provide returns at both ends of the pitch making him a bargain at just 4.0. Owned by 0.9% of FPL managers compared to Gary Cahill’s 26% (yep, we’re still scratching our heads on that one), he could be a great value pick for Bolton’s next three (SUN, swa, STK).

Chris Eagles

Take two Bolton players into the gameweek? Maybe. While Martin Petrov looks the safer investment for those seeking to plunder Bolton’s attacking potential against Sunderland and beyond, Chris Eagles is arguably a more “explosive” option with a greater goal threat.

A 15-goal return in 42 appearances for Burnley last season presents proof of Eagles’ potential- he’s hinted at this in spells for Bolton, firing in efforts on goal and taking his fair share of set-piece efforts. Eagles will go into the clash with the Black Cats in impressive form, off the back of a Man of the Match display against Wigan last weekend which produced 13 FPL points. While he’s struggled to cement a starting role in Owen Coyle’s side, Eagles should have no issues this weekend and, if he can replicate his goal and assist returns from the Wigan game, could be a decent prospect in the mid-term given Bolton’s fixtures.

At just 5.3 in the FPL and with an ownership of just 4.5%, the Eagles option looks the obvious route for those Fantasy managers yet to be convinced by Petrov or those looking to reserve some funds.

Yep looks good - all the usual suspects. Your midfield is your weakest area-I'd want to see an extra "heavyweight" in there like Mata or VDV.

Not really, as the second pair should outscore the first.

But do you want the hassle of having VDV in your team? He's got a semi-permanent hamstring injury, he can't play more than an hour in a game and he's always whinging about something in the media.

What exactly is a sideways move?

Like transferring an expensive under-performing player such as Arteta to an in form but cheaper Ramsey?

This place seems to have its own advocates of avoiding whatever a sideways move actually is, but when it comes to simple decisions like the one above then I'd class the move as "smart, and frees up money to upgrade somewhere else", which actually makes sense to my tiny febrile mind. 🙂

I appreciate people who are critical of the different concepts people operate with in the FPL.

For me a sideways move represents a move that does not offer enough in points to justify the use of transfers on it.

In this particular matter I will be getting less certainty of starting with VDV and Sturridge. Mostly because of VDVs hamstring, yellow card fondness and general bad fitness, but also a little because of the (possible) rotation of Sturridge.

This move does not free up money either - it actually costs 0.1 more.

So this is bordering on a sideways move -- that is: i think i have some transfers that will propel me upwards.

For Arteta to Ramsey however, it is very different. Much better value, and frees up money. But will Ramsey start when both Song and Diaby can play?

I think Ramsey is nailed on ATM so long fit - may have heard he had a niggle. Esp after last minute winner v Marseille. I think he played with Song that game so not in competition. Diaby not in contention.

...is my team for game week 9. Any thoughts would would be awesome, especially on cap. and vice cap.
Ive already made 3 transfers so im down 8 point (considering the first trans. is free)
Wondering if its worth loosing 4 more points to bring Bosingwa (or someone else) in for Kompany as Man city v Man U feels uncertain?
As for cap and vice cap im stuck... tottenham boys ( Ade. and VdV) should score well in therory, as they play Blackburn. Suarez is certainly a potential pick we know what Gerrard is capable of !!!

Thanks all. Yes, VDV, Ramsey and RVP are compelling choices this GW but I'm sticking with Nani, Silva and Suarez for the medium term - next 3 GWs particularly.

I am tempted to captain Sturridge over Suarez but Sturridge is going to have more competition for goals isn't he? I am cautious about Suarez because he scores less than his brilliant play merits.

27 mids dropped a tenth this week, wow. two fwds....., suarez and ba went up two tenths, which is unusual.

I think the active managers are circling in on about an 80 player pool and even some of those mids are dropping like ohara and jarvis(earlier).
BTW, I love the stat that more own Gyan than Torres. Gyan has been in Egypt since August.

Sure would, but impossible-- the most valuable teams were around 125, I think and their ranks were almost all worse than 1.5 million. Maybe one of the top 20 teams was in the 400,000 range-- these guys make four or five transfers a week on average. Someone who knows or competed will know for sure. But it's missing this year, I think.

    Who to captain?
Sturridge (qpr) - On form scoring 3 in his last 2, QPR yet to win at home, Chelsea in good attacking form with Sturridge seemingly there main goal scoring threat with Drogba playing poorly, is it too obvious?
Mata (qpr) - Much the same as Sturridge, Chelsea's main man..which doesn't always lead to points though, doesn't seem as though he can 'explode' as of yet, looks like for a 5-8 pointer most weeks, is this the week he scores 10+ ?
Adebayor (bla) - Up against a poor defense, on FF scoring fire, lowest score is 4 so far, rested for midweek clash so will definately play like the above 2.
VdV (bla) - Defoe playing 90 midweek (and not impressing) he seems nailed on to start, 28 in his last 3, does he score again this week?
Silva (mun) - By far the worst fixture, but he is the best player of the lot, is he fixture proof? Is a 12 point captain good enough considering the fixtures Liverpool/Chelsea/Spurs/Arsenal have this week?
Suarez (NOR) - Probably the best fixture of the bunch, is this the week he finally scores more than a goal in Liverpool colours?
Kuyt (NOR) - Was ballsy enough to transfer him in for Nani for the short term, is having him differential enough? At only 1.5% ownership, a big score could rocket me up the rankings.

Im really tempted by Mata as he has had a rest midweek, but then again Chelsea have Lampard, Drogba, Sturridge that can easily be the ones that score.
I see most of Spurs goals going through Adebayor (as they have so far) but I dont know!

Moderate : Sturridge .. Chelsea is very likely to score and Sturridge, in good form, should take part.

i have little respect for high priced keepers. Habsi has shown he can haul in points even when wigan lose. Which of course is more often than not. His fixtures were too hard to ignore at that price. I should be ok for 5 GWs, hopefully my slightly pricey defence will make up for it.

to be fair, all are under 6 mil.

my idea was to have a rotation where i have 3 solid defenders every week, and then an option to play a 4th, or dyer, or johnson based on fixtures. guys like nani, vdv, silva, rvp, suarez, and for the short term, petrov, will be every week starts.

my logic is other than my keeper and that 10th outfielder, i should be have heavy hitters, and that 10th spot will at least have an attractive fixture.

Fair enough, you've thought it through 😛

I was thinking earlier that the last two winners of FPL both scaled down in defence.

Two years ago, the guy never bought anyone above 4.5 in defence and last year's winner tended to rotate cheapies around one exp defender which is my strategy this year.

              Best of luck! 😉

Fuzzy, take a look at the PPG from defenders vs mids vs forwards.

Stacking up in defence just ain't worth it this season.

The cheaper, the better with the caveat that they have to have some goal threat, which is why I'll be shipping out Simpson next week for R. Taylor.

Odemwingle for Agbohlahor... they are the same price only 0.1 mil difference... If you go by form this season alone Agbohlahor has 60 points to his name and Odemwingle only 17! That would still leave you with 1.2 m in the bank

Cheapo nailed on defenders with at least some goalscoring threat seems to be the way to go this season.

        Cahill ain't cheap.

C- Gerrard. You are paying alot for him, you gotta believe in him, home to norwich, wont get much tastier.
VC- VDV. Because i have disgusting man-love for the Dutchman.

I have all of them except Gerrard, and am going with Adebayor, they have conceded 13 goals against their 4 'tough' opponents in Newcastle/Villa/Arsenal and City.
Although, its a toss up with him and Gerrard for you I feel, Gerrard the more risky option

Was also thinking Adebayor, but Sturrigde will be keen to impress against QPR who have been very unprdictable, loosing 6-0 against Fulham, 4-0 against Bolton and 2-0 against Wigan... he know Torres is back next week! And he will be keen to let Villas-Boas know he presence

Jafalad: You make a choice about your bramble replacement?

Also...are you, like me, scared of having no liverpool or spurs attacking this week?

Titus remains in my squad for another week. I'm looking at Brown as SUN have good fix or Boyata at BOL.

Scared about no LIV or TOT? Not really although Suarez has potential to do well v NOR and VDV/Ade at BLB.

I think LIV will find NOR not that easy to beat-they've quite impressed me so far and probably the best of the promoted sides. BLB used to be quite hard to beat at home but no longer it seems.

I suppose when you have Rooney, RVP and Sturridge upfront, you don't really become too concerned about others. I'm going with form over fixtures.

Mata is due a 10 pointer and Nani always goes well at home. Silva is Silva and always in the point. I guess that is one of the joys of having the Supa-Dupa I6, eh, Brother! 😉

Purely fixtures and price. Plus I need to rotate the NEW def with someone and SUN fits the bill perfectly.

The mids and fwds are largely selected on form but the defs, because they are ubercheap, need to be backed up by fixtures, particularly home games.

dude, i have had brown from gw1 and he's been nothing but a pain in the ass. he and moses play 90 minutes but max point scoring ability is of 2 points.
i just don't see him racking up clean sheets

Unfortunately, there's not a lot out there. He's pretty much the best of the 4.5s unless you've seen someone?

I agree with the defensive policy. But still... he has been dire of late.

But then again, I have possibly Simpson and Woodgate also knocking at the door, so might keep Brown for a little while longer. Hope your predicament comes to fruition ...

Lol Its hard to call it the super six without ade, in all honesty. Although Sturridge is excellent.

So what defense are you running then? Enrique, Simpson.......Taylor? Risky, assuming I know youre playing Vorm, as well.

Yes, I'm relying a little on a result at WOL so I've doubled up on SWN. Enrique, Taylor and Simpson for me. 2/3 at home with strong fixtures - can't complain about that!

          You?

I still have Bosingwa, so its him enrique, and simpson, which I'm fine with.

I just got so much I want to do....but I really wanna avoid the hits. I really want spurs coverage, but I think I have to get aguero back next week, too.

              I'd wait on Spurs.

I had VDV last year but every 6 games or so he gets an injury. Then he ends up playing for 60 mins.

Adebayor - well if you have Sturridge, you have more than covered this option. CHS are scoring a lot of goals (4-3-3 generally promotes that) and are higher in the league. Plus there are the concerns over the hamstring from last week, too. You have a great team and I'm deeply envious 😳

lol that last comment amounts to you want bosingwa over bramble........which, while fair, is ridiculous

VDV is always a risk, but having sturridge makes me wanna ditch mata for VDV soon. Could be bad, especially if he plays wide and spurs stop getting penos. It just seems vulnerable.

best of luck to my fellow supa 6 owner. May Spurs and Liverpool score nothing tomorrow!

Mata is due a 10 pointer in the same way that someone playing a one armed bandit will think they're due for a payout.

And when they do get a payout, they think they're on a winning streak so just dump their winnings straight back into the machine with the expectation of another payout until they have nothing left but a sad sense of disappointment and frustration.

But Nani and Silva are the machines which pay out a lot more on a more consistent basis, so stick with them.

(I think I need some sleep since that metaphor isn't very robust) 🙂

Mata has the form from La Liga to back him up though - when he starts getting full game time with Torres, I'm sure there will be some decent returns.

3 assists and one goal in four and a half games hardly suggests he'll be a joker in the pack if you play your cards right 😉
