You know the drill by now. You soak up the Scout Picks and then we deliver some alternative options that have slipped further down the Fantasy menu. Obscure dishes they may be, but these guys have the potential to reward returns to help close the yawning gaps on your mini-league rivals.

Joe Allen

Since Kemy Agustien suffered a hamstring injury last month, Joe Allen has impressed in his new starting role at Swansea; he has played every minute of the last four games, picking up two assists, as well as 2 Bonus Points for his man of the match performance against Stoke.

At just 5’7”, Allen is no midfield destroyer, but his naturally creative play and clever touch makes him an ideal pivot for the side. Allen sits slightly deeper in midfield, but because of the way Swansea play this means he sees a lot more of the ball; it doesn’t restrict him from getting forward and involved in the attacking build-up play. In fact, in the last 4 games, he has had more touches, made more passes in the opposition half, made more assist attempts and scored more FPL points than any other Swansea player, bar Scott Sinclair.

Although Sinclair is easily the most attacking player in the Swansea midfield, it is Nathan Dyer who has picked up the most investors over the first few weeks; his bargain price of 4.8m has seen him pick up over 13% of all FPL managers. Joe Allen in the meantime, has quietly snuck under the radar with just 0.5% but, at 4.5, offers potentially even greater value and looks a strong differential option if you’re struggling for cash.

Kyle Walker

The Spurs back four is in a sorry state right now, with injuries robbing Harry Redknapp of first choice centre-backs. The fact is, however, clean sheets are generally hard to come by across the board and once again Fantasy managers are left looking for attacking returns to help justify the outlay on a mid-price defender. In the case of Kyle Walker, there’s clear potential in this area.

Walker’s glorious match-winning strike against Arsenal provided the latest evidence of his threat in the opponents’ half and, with strong fixtures to come offering the potential of attacking returns, the right-back looks well positioned to contribute some points via his raiding runs down the flank.

A trip to Blackburn this weekend could be the start of those – Rovers’ home form is pretty poor and, with 10 goals conceded in four matches, you’d expect Spurs to come away with a couple, even if a clean sheet perhaps looks beyond them. At 5.4 in the FPL, Walker is a gamble but with just 1.8% ownership and the growing trend leaning towards investment in Stoke’s back four, he represents a clear differential.

Dedryck Boyata

While Bolton have had a few awful moments this season (yes Adam Bodgan, we’re looking at you), their place at the bottom of the table has more to do with a horrendous run of fixtures than anything else. As things start to ease up, however, we’re able to take another look at some of the potential targets in the Trotters’ ranks and with the entire team bar Gary Cahill and Martin Petrov being overlooked by the masses, there are plenty of differential options to consider.

Dedryck Boyata looks a solid starter and has the potential to provide returns at both ends of the pitch making him a bargain at just 4.0. Owned by 0.9% of FPL managers compared to Gary Cahill’s 26% (yep, we’re still scratching our heads on that one), he could be a great value pick for Bolton’s next three (SUN, swa, STK).

Chris Eagles

Take two Bolton players into the gameweek? Maybe. While Martin Petrov looks the safer investment for those seeking to plunder Bolton’s attacking potential against Sunderland and beyond, Chris Eagles is arguably a more “explosive” option with a greater goal threat.

A 15-goal return in 42 appearances for Burnley last season presents proof of Eagles’ potential- he’s hinted at this in spells for Bolton, firing in efforts on goal and taking his fair share of set-piece efforts. Eagles will go into the clash with the Black Cats in impressive form, off the back of a Man of the Match display against Wigan last weekend which produced 13 FPL points. While he’s struggled to cement a starting role in Owen Coyle’s side, Eagles should have no issues this weekend and, if he can replicate his goal and assist returns from the Wigan game, could be a decent prospect in the mid-term given Bolton’s fixtures.

At just 5.3 in the FPL and with an ownership of just 4.5%, the Eagles option looks the obvious route for those Fantasy managers yet to be convinced by Petrov or those looking to reserve some funds.

Peraonally, I think VP is a better captain option. Liverpool have a better game but VP is a machine. Also, stoke just played in europe and are much better at home.. People over estimate stoke away because of their home form.

Of course, suarez is a decent captain choice too - but he doesn't take pens or free kicks either, so overall you'd have to fancy van persie to outscore him.

Solid team. I'm not sure if Simpson's place is uncertain - Santon might take it? Choose subs in preparation for this. Also just check if Ramsey is fit, I read somewhere here he had a niggle. I think Stoke will be tougher than many expected judging by all the RVP (C)s.

Just a little exercise as im bored..how many 'differentials' does everyone have? (ownership of under 10 or so %)
I have Sturridge (7.1%) Mata (4.8%) VDV (5.4%) and Kuyt (1.6%) plus Adebayor at 12.3%
Quite suprised in a way, but then again Sturridge was suspended, Mata/Adebayor wasnt in the game, VDV had his GW1 game postponed and Kuyt (despite doing well last year, and in previous years) has had a pretty slow start and was even benched for a few games.
Pretty confident in those as differentials for the next few GW's at least!

RVP/Walcott/Baines (in a few weeks) are good differentials, no point selling Baines after keeping him through the tough ones, Warnock seems a good one too, obviously Moses is there because of cash, so at 5 or whatever he is now, if he scores well at that price and a differential it would be very good (although nothing has happened with him yet ha)

Yep Baines *could* (please) be a great differential soon, he's been providing decent crosses just nobody's knocked them in, and he's had a couple of very close direct free kicks too... so i think he will come good.

Basically, everton have been losing because of tough fixtures, but they can't keep losing forever. When they win, he has to be involved. or so I keep telling myself. After united at home, everton have great fixtures all the way to wildcard in gw20. (arguably the best fix of any team)

still WCing----after dumping N taylor for boyata, i realize i have .1 to go drop al habsi for krul. this seems like a massive upgrade as the pair have rotating home fixtures until GW 21!!! Although week 12 is a night mare Vorm-MUN, Krul-mci

right, so now im wondering if i should drop R Taylor for another defender. Im never comfortable doubling up in defence. Another 4.7 defender anyone likes out there?
Currently Kompany, Enrique, Shawcross, R Taylor, Boyata

or roll with 2 Toons at the back?

2 Toons is fine I think. You don't wanna lose R Taylor because he has great defensive and offensive potential at amazingly cheap pricing. Based on your GK and def rotation you may often not double up anyway.

Btw lol I just thought about this - does the game stop you doubling up on keepers? Hahahaha...

Yeah I should give that some thought, I have patchy GK rotation. Still it can be taken to extremes, Kenny /Ruddy anyone? It's funny how most of us neglect GK. I think it's because the most you'll get is 6+ 1 or 2 save points. Bonus points are rare.

Sunderland are shite at the moment so all this New/Sun rotation strategy is a one way ticket to Planet Lose. Anyone thinking of bringing Brown in needs a deep MRI brainscan.

Same thing with Vorm and Hennessy. Rotate perfectly for home fixtures until GW23 but would you want a shite Wolves gk playing roughly every other week and have you seen who they have to play???

If you fiddle with the members ticker enough (moving teams up and down and looking for deep blue (very easy) fixtures then you can pick a good couple of cheapies.

Who can think of about 6 strikers they want but NO midfielders?

This year is a nightmare. I don't think it helps that so many teams play this variation of 4-3-3 which is effectively 4-5-1 at times... yet the 'wide' players are always classified as strikers.

And we only have 3 striker slots and 5 midfielder slots.

I just see 3 goals + at blackburn while only 2 for Arsenal(RVP) and Pool(Suarez).

I guess i will just ask everyone elses opinion, how many goals this week for Spurs, Arsenal and Pool?

Spurs will score 4 (VDV x2, Adebayor x2, assists - Friedel, Adebayor, VDV x2) Liverpool will score 3 (Suarez x2, Kuyt, assists - Kuyt x2, Suarez) and Arsenal will score 1 (Koscielny, assist - Benayoun)

Yep, VDV = 22 points from 3 games away (2 points against United) and is against an easier opponent and RVP = 29 from 4 home games (0.08 ppg difference) against a tougher team, who are poor after Europe games, both are injury prone, both are dutch, both are good players in good form, both have 3 initials, toss a coin !

I have to say my sixteen teams in various leagues with all the different rules, scoring systems, and transfer rules + the minor details of price differentials number of players allowed from a team etc, etc. Is beginning to test my powers of concentration.

Both Moses and Dyer are the cheap MF who play in front three of poor attacking team. I feel it's a waste of space to have one of them starting in my team every week... Of the two, I actually wanna keep Moses but he's going to lose more value soon, so I'm thinking of upgrading him while I can.

I bought Dyer at 4.5, I could sell him for only 4.6 and only Bannan is interesting choice. But, as I said, I don't wanna lose value more. So, it's Moses to go first.

    Vorm (Begovic)

    Rooney, RVP (c) Sturridge

    0.8 in the bank.

Gks have tough fixtures this week, but Vorm should get more save points and has a chance of a c/s.
    Simpson may be dropped.
Happy with the mids and forwards.

    Any suggestions?

nice team. Personally I think you want adebayor, maybe at the expense of rooney and a midfield upgrade.

I just think adebayor is one of the safest, best value picks in the game and has good fixtures. Rooney might score more but not when you take into account the extra cash freed up - And united don;t have many games where you'd be likely to captain rooney coming up.

        Thanks, Scored.

I was thinking either Nani to VDV, or Rooney to Ade.

But then if Simpson or Woodgate look like they have been dropped which should be clear after this GW, then I'd like to have two free transfers to upgrade one of them and maybe do one of the transfer above depending on how Rooney and Nani perform.

        Does that make sense?

I should learn to post any questions about my team at roughly the same time as I'm answering other peoples' questions.

One single solitary answer (albeit a good one) after all the effort I've put in tonight/this morning is disappointing. 🙁

Yep - no need to do it this week because although spurs have bburn and united have city - united are still at home, so it's not that out of the question that united will outscore spurs, especially with samba getting back to his best

Not really a question about the UK being asleep. Just that there are some posters here who are still posting after my question who I thought might be arsed to offer an opinion since I've given them advice in the past. Some of them about an hour ago.

And good advice it was too! 🙂

I think it's ok to not have Spurs player this week, but you definitely need one of them next. Rooney + Nani may not be too much if you believe it could be an entertaining game with high score...

Looks good - fairly similar to mine in some ways albeit with different personel. I would like one more heavy hitter in midpark though - I just feel that Ramsay/Bannan/Petrov are a little lightweight.

(Imagine I'm saying this in the voice of David Mitchell)

It's pretty similar to yours, Jafalad in that it has 15 squad players who are male.

The different personnel issue is the one that worries me though, since that's the actual question I'm asking and I'm getting a critique of my team that hints at some vague notion of lightweights vs heavy hitters and possibly beefing up my midpark that maybe has to do with something like meeting George Michael or that English git from CNN and I really hope it doesn't.

If you want my advice then your advice needs to be honed to a sharp stick that will pierce my consciousness with brutal accuracy, and contain advice like "Get Suarez in!"

          Erm,...I don't recall asking for your advice...ever! 😕

          Lightweights - as listed

Heavyweights - VDV, Nani, Mata ( I'm pretty sure a smart boy like you can work that out ;))

Personally, I'd bring in Mata but it means you end up with a defence like mine which I'm not too sure, you'd be comfortable with.

...and who the hell is David Mitchell? 😕

Random question, what's the highest ranking for an individual GW you've ever had?

Last yr I was 49th in the world in one of the DGWs. (Had 2 newcastle defenders and they kept 2 clean sheets, this helped!)

I don't understand the adversity to having Ferguson in your team. I haven't yet, in all my days playing this game, had to use my 3rd sub and therefore it makes sense to have the cheapest player in that position. Feel free to tell me otherwise....

you're not utilising your squad then. If you start thinking about players who rotate well home and away, you'll find yourself using every player, and almost always having 4 away players on the bench. This helps, and could be the difference which gets you into the top 30k which you've been hovering above the last few years

and that's even before we think about injuries and dropped players (are you saying your third sub has never come off the bench?)

AND before you think about the ORDER of your subs... if you didn't have ferguson, you wouldnt have a player who is ALWAYS your third sub

        Etc. etc. etc.

I understand that, and it makes sense, but using the cash saved on the cheapest 3rd sub who is never used allows scope for three slightly superior subs to be bought.....I know it's a squad game but why have Tiote instead of Ferguson? He plays, but chances are you'll never reap those points cos he's always a sub.....and he's half a mil more....hmmmm.

Dont think you understood what I said. I was saying I use every sub.

          e.g.
a pair of goalkeepers rotate home and away.
2 pairs of defenders rotate home and away
A pair of midfielders rotate home and away.

4 away players on bench, 4 home in starting lineup

That's interesting. But I assume you don't do this like clockwork....surely it depends on the fixtures. Ie. i would generally go with Given over Ruddy cos Villa are tighter, except when they're playing top 4 ish....But it's a good strategy cos home advantage IS an advantage.

not quite like clockwork, but pretty much. If one of the players is playing united at home and the other is playing blackburn away it obviously might affect things, but most of the time the home fixture is better

You have been lucky. Some people last week had Young, Nasri and (insert name of two popular midfielders here) plus Ferguson and that lot didn't get any time on the pitch at all, and had the sheer audacity to complain when they could only field two mids! Pah!

What happens when it starts to snow? They'll have to make a transfer!!!!

(Although I'll begrudgingly admit that it was probably the best strategy from GW1. Sod it)

Yeah, but that's the game. You risk picking Nasri cos you know, if you check, he's a rotation risk: the kind of player I don't want. Consistency is the key. 40 points a week, with the odd spike here and there, is ok to do well in this game. Breaking into the upper echelons is down to a good deal of luck, like captaining Ronney first few GWs etc....

Some players consistently get top 10k. You don't. (me neither... but my first season was 13k last season)

If people are clearly better than you at the game (better than me too) pay attention to what they say.

Thanks for the talk Dad. I'm sure some players do consistently score well, and I'm sure this is down to a strategy. But I am sure that there is not simply one strategy that allows you to be good at this game.....there's too many variables. The Ferguson Strategy, as it should now be named, is one such, and it has its pros and cons. I reckon your 13k season had as much to do with a few crucial well-made decisions as much as anything else.....
