We’ve pared down our approach to Scout Notes, focusing instead on specific individuals as opposed to analysing each and every team this time. With another five fixtures still to follow today, here are some of the main points of note from Saturday’s games:

Luis Suarez

Backed by so many Fantasy managers going into the clash with Norwich, the Uruguayan found himself pitched against an inspired goalkeeping performance from John Ruddy. Suarez was, once again, superb but wasted opportunities and was denied by the woodwork twice. That will be no consolation to his owners, and particularly those who handed him the armband. Given the fact that Suarez will have recorded several efforts off target and failed to score over the 90 minutes, it will be interesting to see if he misses out on Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus when they’re handed out on Monday.

John Ruddy

Few Fantasy managers would have been bold enough to select John Ruddy for yesterday’s trip to Anfield with any real confidence. The Canaries keeper produced a series of saves to break Liverpool hearts- according to his FPL stats, Ruddy defied the home side 8 times and stands a decent chance of returning some bonus when the points are handed out tomorrow morning.

Demba Ba

The in-form striker went into the clash with Wigan with five goals in his last three matches and found the backing of many Fantasy managers as a result. It was a frustrating day for Ba however and, having seen a second-half header stopped on the line by Ali Al Habsi, he was replaced by Shola Ameobi on 68 minutes. Ba’s ability to string back-to-back matches together remains a concern and the statistics show that he has failed to complete 90 minutes all season. Ba has been subbed off in each of his last five games and with Ameobi showing form and Hatem Ben Arfa now fit, Ba’s partnership with Leon Best is under pressure.

Jamie O’Hara

At last, the influential Wolves midfielder returned some Fantasy points with a second-half strike that earned Mick McCarthy’s side an unlikely point against Swansea. Featured in our recent Monitor article for Members, O’Hara has been a consistent performer for Wolves this season – our Members need only examine his current ICT Index placing to see just how influential he’s been. Saturday’s goal was, however, his first tangible Fantasy points in what has been a frustrating season. Should Wolves enjoy a positive spell of results, there’s no doubt that O’Hara could come to the fore.

Danny Graham

A goal and an assist at Molineux continued Graham’s promising spell and brought him further to the attention of Fantasy managers. Like Steve Morison at Norwich, Graham has adjusted well to the top flight and is offering decent budget potential up front. Sadly, with Daniel Sturridge and Demba Ba almost in the same price bracket, the Swan’s striker has been largely neglected as a Fantasy option. The Swansea midfield options, with Scott Sinclair the Rolls Royce, ably assisted by Nathan Dyer and Joe Allen in the budget bracket, remain the more likely attractions. Allen came to fore with a goal in the 2-2 draw – a prospect raised by Big Dunc in this week’s Differentials.

Chris Brunt

Just a week after rewarding his owners with a goal in the 2-0 defeat of Wolves, the Baggies skipper fluffed a first-half penalty at Villa to lose them points. Brunt may well lose spot-kick duties to the recalled Peter Odemwingie as a result. Brunt did at least demonstrate his worth from set-pieces, flighting the corner for Jonas Olsson’s equaliser and then providing another assist from a corner for Paul Scharner’s winner.

Shane Long

According to Roy Hodgson, the Irishman has suffered a serious knee injury as a result of Alan Hutton’s reckless challenge. Long was forced off mid-way through the first half and will undergo scans early next week. Should he face a spell out of the side, this would see Odemwingie installed as a certain starter in the central attacking role and, more intriguingly, Somen Tchoyi would be boosted as a Fantasy option – he would seem likely to come into the side to partner Odemwingie should Hodgson keep faith with 4-4-2.

Stephane Sessegnon

After failing to live up to his potential following a superb pre-season and with early promise shown in terms of goal threat, Sessegnon suddenly exploded in the 2-0 win at Bolton. Significantly his performance coincided with a change of formation from Steve Bruce with Connor Wickham brought in to the lead the line alongside Nicklas Bendtner. The Dane, along with Sessegnon, seemed to drift behind Wickham and offer support on either flank and had a hugely effective game as a result. With three strong home fixtures to come in the next four and, with Sunderland showing positive form, Sessegnon, along with Bendtner, could now start attracting interest once again having seen his price drop from 6.5 to 6.1 in the FPL.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

One of my rivals has 5 players in the manc derby today.

Kompany, Aguero, Silva v Rooney and Nani

I only have the Pig. Bit nervous of a high scoring game now

I do have RVP (c) which I'm hoping will counteract anything that happens in that game.

Something from Rooney, Nasri and Kompany would do nicely. United to win 2-1.

cnt see a high scoring game, both teams will go with 2 deep midfielders, the question is who is gonna play 2 strikers and whos gonna go with 1.
the reason im sure of that is because both teams have strong wingers (nani young/ silva nasri) so defending them will require the holding mid to help on the flanks.
a 1-0 1-1 2-1 max is the score i predict. what i cnt predict is the winning side though

Suarez would probably have walked off with 3 bonus points under the old system, but he's looking at 1 maximum under the new regime. He has all the silky skills but his chances/goals ratio is poor.

Frustrating as an owner. but that's why I went with RVP as captain instead.

19 points from my 3 Newcastle boys ( Krul, STaylor, Cabaye) yesterday. Thank you very much lads. But looking at their fixtures it looks like its time to get rid of a few. I'm thinking Taylor? Anyone else in a similar position?

Seems a bit daft getting rid of a player who is prob gonna score 10 points this weekend but those forthcoming fixtures look very bad!

After watching MOTD it seems that Enrique was the last Liverpool player to touch the ball before Bellamy scored, so why has he not got the assist?
OK it did touch a Norwich player before Bellamy got his paws on it but i remember earlier in the season when Rooney got a ridiculous assist in similar circumstances.
Is there a possibility he will get the assist?

Pool was because of Hernandez travelling back from the international break. City, i have no idea but Welbeck did well against them in the Community shield, maybe Sir Alex thinks he suits this game more.

Can't see either of them being rotation free, so you're best off avoiding both

Have to get rid of Ward and Woodgate. Want Shawcross but don't have anything in the bank. Looking to perhaps upgrade Mata to VDV this week as well. (Mata should rise if he does ok toda so that move will cost me 0.3). Looks like downgrading Bosingwa is the only way forward, but that means three trades. I don't ask for help very often (looking at my rank, perhaps I should ask more!), but any advice welcome. Squad as follows:

    Krul Vorm
Kompany Bosingwa N Taylor Woodgate Ward
    Nani Mata Silva Etherington Dyer
    RVP Suarez Sturridge

    Thanks

No - I mean a refereeing decision not made in the spirit of the game and made by a referee who revels in the sort of attention-seeking decisions that makes him a bad choice of referee at any level. I'm just thinking of other tackles (of a similar nature) that went unpunished in the tournament or not treated in the same manner.

Our kicking since Priestland got injured was shocking too, so that was a contributory factor. Time to get back to football me thinks...

One thing that annoys me about this game is pen 'saves'

Really think if a pen is missed the goalkeeper should get points even if he doesn't touch the ball. Brings in the psychological element.

But who's to say that the psychological element is down to the GK. I'd say it's more about the pressure of all eyes being on you alone. Too hard to judge I think.

the player loses points for missing. the keeper should get points. pretty sure they used to before this game got twisted with silly assist and bonus points that aren't bonus points

But the player takes the shot so he deserves to lose points if he misses. By that logic a player could kick it to the left, send the keeper the completely wrong way but still have it hit off the post or just go wide. The GK then gets save points for it going wide even though he completely misjudged where the ball was going. Don't think that's fair.

I think the keepers should get something too. Perhaps not a full penalty save, but 1 point or 2.

I feel there is often the case where a goalkeeper might force the player into taking a bigger risk because he feels he can't score otherwise, and therefore increasing the risk of a miss too.

Fairly to difficult to judge when that happens though. I agree the GK can cause that but it won't always be the case. So it's a bit hit and miss.

Exactly. You can award a bonus for something they might or might not have done.

It's far too objective (it's a complete unknown, realistically) to give any award other than for actually touching the ball.

Can't reward "psychological" points otherwise there's all sorts of minefields. Really stupid ones.

I have a feeling we've had this debate before.

I don't think it's any more strange than giving out clean sheet points to midfielders for example. Or assists that are assists if a defender clears it 5 centimeters inside the penalty area rather than 5 centimeters outside.

In the end the keeper's job is to prevent the opponent from scoring, and if he does that he should be rewarded. If the keeper was not there you can be sure the penalty taker would have scored.

Well I'll use the example I did above. What if someone takes a penalty and curls it a little bit wide but the keeper dives the wrong way. That would mean the keeper would get points for completely misjudging where the ball was going but was lucky enough that it went wide.

for fpl i have to disagree with you here garg, i think some misses are simply rubbish pens so shouldn't reward the keeper for it, him potentially keeping his clean sheet is reward enough.

I have no idea. I would not want to see what damage was done to his head because of it. Colin Edwards was distraught at the side of the track. Two motorsport fatalities in two weekends. I hope bad things really don't come in threes. RIP Marco. Only 24. Jeez.

Both of the deaths have been extremely saddening, I think the last time 2 drivers died within a week was back in 1994 Imola, when senna and ratzenberger died within a day.

I've said it a lot, and the people on the dugout discussions would have heard me say this a lot, but Phil Dowd is the worst ref in the top tier of English football. How he even gets to referee at a division above the Blue Square Premier League beats me. I didn't see the Hutton challenge myself, but it'll be interesting to see where Dowd will be officiating next week.

          He's fat too.

That was Atkinson. He's a twit too.

The only referees I rate are Marriner, Walton and probably Webb. Even though the later wears a Man U top under his shirt half the time

    Could England's woes be worse?

The decision this week to ban Wayne
Rooney for three matches at Euro 2012
has caused huge anxiety at FA. Obviously
the removal of Rooney is a big minus for
the national team but we can't help but
wonder if there's more that's worrying
    them.

One rumour to reach us is that England's
    other potential superstar, Jack
    Wilshere's injury and recuperation are
worse than has been said publicly.
Bone grafts and spending time in a
    wheelchair are being discussed.
Along with a timeframe that wouldn't
seem to allow a tournament next summer.

What's the effect of missing a penalty on a player's PPI? I'm not sure if Brunt would get bonuses or not. I know he missed the pen, but would getting the 2 assists for your team balance out the penalty miss?

Well that penalty miss made 10 points swing for me, He would have been on 16 P. But speaking on this topic, when Suarez missed penalty he still got BP, RVP too. I know its bullish but depends did he make shot on target or not. RVP's and Suarez's penalties were both saved and therefore gained positive PPI actually. Sadly this time the shot of target is against us Brunt owners, Never mind seems he is finding form and WBA are scoring ATM. I am gonna keep him,.

Don't know how the PPI is weighted to be honest, but the fact there was three different goalscorers will probably rule out Brunt. Adebayor didn't get any last week when he had two assists in a game, while VDV got three for scoring a penalty.

Good point about Adebayor and the assists from Fratboy above. While assists seemingly don't account for much, the peno would probably rub out the chance for bonuses

4 of the people above me in my mini-league doubled up on Newcastle defence. I think i might do better if i go against all my "fantasy football rules" i've learned from last years experiences. Always takes hit, double up on defenders when you can, always captain your favourite player, bandwagons are good 90% of the time and try to play players that are away as often as you can.

Torres being back has no more effect on Sturridge than it does on Cech. Mata plays on the left, Torres is a central striker and Sturridge plays on the right. As long as they are fit that will be our first choice PL strikeforce.
