Despite the game at Old Trafford grabbing most of the headlines, today’s Scout Notes has more than little Dutch flavour to it after Arsenal, Spurs and Everton all grab wins in Sunday afternoon’s fixtures. Here’s our round-up of yesterday’s games from a Fantasy perspective…

Royston Drenthe

A first start for the Dutchman saw him produce the goods as Everton ended Fulham’s unbeaten home league record. Drenthe has been used sparingly since his loan move but has presented a strong case for a continued role in David Moyes’ first XI following his display at the Cottage. A goal and 2 assists helped him to the maximum bonus points and he is now second-top FPL scoring player for Everton, despite limited game time. Currently a member of just 0.4% of Fantasy squads, he’s likely to take a substantial jump from Gameweek 12 onwards, as Everton’s fixtures improve considerably.

Mario Balotelli

Unlucky not to grab any bonus points this weekend, the Italian’s consistency has taken a dramatic upturn over the last few fixtures. Having played just twenty minutes in the first five games of the season, Balotelli’s brace at Old Trafford means he has now found the net in each of City’s last four league games and is looking a viable Fantasy prospect. While he claims there’s a new-found maturity to his game, there are a couple of other factors to his recent run in the first-team. Edin Dzeko’s tantrum at Bayern coupled with Sergio Aguero’s groin injury afforded Balotelli virtually a full game at Blackburn, while his European suspension helped him to more league time, with the aforementioned pair rested for Champions League action. With his suspension now over, he could be more prone to league rotation.

James Milner

A little like Adam Johnson, Milner –when picked- clearly has the potential to produce for City. Yesterday’s game saw him make his third start in a row for Roberto Mancini’s side, however, and he’s now overtaken Samir Nasri’s Fantasy total for the season. Milner’s game is clearly suited to the new bonus scoring system, too; somewhat bizarrely, he has now picked up more bonus than David Silva, despite playing almost two hundred and forty minutes less than the Spaniard.

David Luiz

Andre Villas-Boas’ decision to start Luiz over Branislav Ivanovic wasn’t the most inspired selection of his Chelsea tenure. Aside from conceding the penalty that helped QPR to a 1-0 win, Luiz looked ill-at-ease throughout and his display, if anything, could well have a positive impact on Ivanovic’s future game time at centre-half. In turn, this could help cement Jose Bosingwa’s future at right-back; Chelsea have been poor at the back this season and Luiz’s introduction further undermined this aspect of their game- his poor performance will certainly have given his manager food for thought, with the unexpected defeat depriving the Blues of a chance to leapfrog Man United into second place.

Robin Van Persie

When the team sheets were announced yesterday afternoon, many a Fantasy manager’s heart sank with the news that the Dutchman was benched for the visit of Stoke. While Gervinho ultimately outscored his skipper Fantasy-wise, with a goal, 2 assist s and 3 bonus points, Van Persie-once again- produced the goods for Arsene Wenger’s side, despite just twenty-five minutes game time. Although the Gunners away form has been woeful, with one point from four games, they have now won four in a row at the Emirates and Van Persie has ran riot in recent weeks- he has now scored twice in each of his last three home games.

Rafael Van der Vaart

Two more goals from Van der Vaart means he’s scored five in his last four games now. Spurs’ poor start to the campaign is a distant memory and with five wins in six, they’ll go into this weekend’s home game with QPR as huge favourites. The Dutchman’s maximum bonus award has seen him pick up 11 for the season now, more than any other player in FPL. It’s clear that if Harry Redknapp continues to play him in the hole behind Emmanuel Adebayor, Van der Vaart looks capable of racking up the Fantasy points time after time and with a strong run of fixtures ahead, looks set for heavy investment.

Anton Ferdinand

The QPR centre half has slipped under the radar of most Fantasy managers thus far, though yesterday’s performance further increased his potential. Ferdinand’s move to Loftus Road has seen him return 3 clean sheets and 7 bonus points in his six appearances for Neil Warnock’s side. Similar to Milner, his game seems to suit the new bonus system, though Ferdinand is a guaranteed starter- he is now just 1 bonus point behind Steven Taylor, though the Newcastle centre-half has picked up just a single bonus in the last six Gameweeks, in comparison.

Heidar Helguson

Drafted into the QPR starting for the misfiring Jay Bothroyd in Gameweek 8, Helguson has fully vindicated Neil Warnock’s decision. Yesterday’s penalty was his second goal in two games- Bothroyd had failed to find the net in the previous seven matches. With DJ Campbell injured for around two months with a foot problem, Helguson’s chances of leading the line for QPR over the next few gameweeks look strong, though with a tricky run of fixtures on the horizon, his chances of returning the Fantasy points perhaps don’t look too prosperous.

    Given
    Kompany-Enrique-Walker-(Simpson)-(Boyata)
    Silva-Ramsey-Bale-Arteta-(Ferguson)
    Rooney-Adebayor-Suerez

I'm happy with my defence. Maybe should have got Ryan Taylor in but he has a tough fixture list soon.
I'm gona ditch both Arteta and Bale, and in a few weeks Suerez for Van Persie but will have to make savings for it. Also want Van der Vaart.

I need a cheapest midfielder - any recommendations: Bannan, Walters, Pilkington, Cabaye?

Arteta to Walters looks good for this week. If that gives you the funds to do Bale - VDV then I'd probably do that this week too, even for a hit.

Was thinking of making them moves. Also seriously considering Pilkington, but Walters seems to be getting points more regularly even against the big teams. Think taking a 4 point hit would be worth it to VDV in, just wish I didn't waste a transfer last week in improving my bench.

hi, some thoughts on David Silva, it might seem ridiculous given his amazing start but…
his 4 big scores this season:
    - first 2 home games v swansea and wigan. swansea and wigan are the only two 'weaker' teams who play expansive football, they're the only two sides who will fully stick to their style against the big boys. based on this they are the 2 easiest fixtures of the season imo.
    - against bolton. had jaaskelainen not made that real howler then suddenly silva's 10 points is only 2, it was an 8 point howler.
    - against man utd he was set for a 2 pointer (a very unlucky one as he got close to a few assists and played great) until man utd turned suicidal. to highlight how mad and one-off these few minutes were dzeko should have scored 23 points (4 goals and an assist + subsequent 3bps) in his brief cameo.
the point being those two fixtures are gone now, or at least gone until the second half of the season.

other than those big scores it's been 6s, 5s and a rare 2. i think he's a glorious player but possibly "only" a very good FPL player, whereas a VDV for example i'd class as a glorious FPL player.
i also think silva is a bit of a victim of the new bonus system. aside from the most recent man city bps it's been 9 weeks of reward the goalscorer, ignore the assister.

finally a point which you could view either way. man city are scoring goals for fun, it's almost getting silly. you can view that as more goals for silva to be involved in, or alternatively more goals for the strikers to score and take bonus off him. given that an extra assist is as good as 3 bps the latter is maybe a bit flawed.

to conclude imo (obviously, i'm writing it) if it's a choice between him or VDV i'd actually go with VDV. i’d also possibly class nani above silva in a week or two, i think he could be more FPL friendly (provided he continues to hold off the threat of valencia – admittedly silva has the luxury of having not threat to his position). at 9.5 he looked more of a no brainer, but now he's 10.2 it's getting to the point where you maybe have to think more about it. if you can only afford him or aguero i'd still side with aguero, ideally both of course. he could easily be a season keeper, a real safety blanket in your team that keeps chipping away at the points but i think his bigger scores so far have all had some sort of aid which he won’t get too often. so yeah, I think he’s great (especially in real life, his passes do this to me), just maybe not as essential for FPL as his total suggests.

I agree, he'll get a steady stream of 6 pointers with the occasional big haul thrown in when he gets a bit lucky/easy fixture.

Very annoyed I ditched him for Nasri in the GW2 wildcard, I had no idea there would be such a gulf between them.

I'm sane. I read it and I thought it made perfect sense.

Silva isn't on pens or free kicks and marvellous player though he is, in fantasy terms VdV is more appealling. In last year's BP system Silva would be getting 3 every week but as that's not the case this year you're basically relying on lots of assists in heavy wins. As Applebonkers rightly points out £10.2 is a lot for a player who mainly gets assists with the odd goal. All this is being disguised by the fact that City are scoring so heavily at the moment.

Of course, you could argue that City will continue to play like this, score 3 or 4 goals a game and as Silva is the most nailed on player in the side it would be mental to consider dropping him. On the other hand, if City's form does dip I think VdV and Nani are better Fantasy players.

Interesting that Mr Chelsea FC dismissed it despite it being a perfectly well reasoned opinion.

Presumably you saw that the comment was more than 2 sentences, contained "drop Silva" and you didn't bother reading the rest...

Interesting - but definitely a season keeper for me and for exactly the reasons you stated...his consistency. A player you can rely on to get 6-7 points per game is pretty handy imo.
The reason I sold Nani is that he seems off form to me - just his body language and effort is poor at the moment - if that improves I'll be getting him back in

If you look at the way we are playing, we now play in a way that supports Torres, when he comes back into the team he'll resume goal scoring. Its the reason why Drogba has looked so ineffective, because before our system was geared towards him and now its shifted to Torres. I think El Nino could find his goal scoring touch against Arsenal. Hat-trick is nailed on.

I couldn't agree more (beyond the nailed on hat-trick) the system now is all about Torres, he's getting beautiful thru balls which he can use his pace to run on and that means he'll start getting goals far more frequently.

People were slightly too hasty last season to lambast Torres without truly looking at the reasons why.

    I have the following team:

    Krul/Ruddy
    Bos/Kompany/Enrique/Simpson/Orr
    Silva/Mata/Ramsey/Dyer/Moses
    Aguero/Rooney/Suarez

Bos gets a 1 match suspension which is served on Wednesday but would welcome thoughts on the following regardless of Bos:

    Bos to Shawcross
    Mata to VDV

Then the following weeks remove Moses and Orr.

    Any thoughts, thanks.

I really dont understand all the rage surrounding mata. I see his price go up all of the time. He's had maybe 2 good performances for chelsea so far. When players like VDV are avail in same range i find it mad!!!

This morning everyone was warning others off Aguero coz he may not play with the villareal game...well that may be true...but silva may not play...balotelli may not play...just aguero is usually the most advanced and the most dangerous with the cutting edge. Aguero (c) next week is a top move.

I don't know. Plenty of wierdo's on here today. Its a shame the site doesn't allow for your rank (and previous years) to be displayed so people can see who is talking sense and who is full of sh*t.

Please note i did say to include previous years. You read what you wanted to have a little fit.

There are pretenders this year as people just captainned rooney for first 5weeks and it worked for them. The cream is rising to the top now. How people have performed over the past few years counts more than this season but i would like to see all of the info.

I think you want instructions, not advice. This site is about having people give you their point of view and its up to you to decide whether or not to listen to it. If you only want the people who are doing well to give you their advice it seems as though you are going to implement all advice given. If thats the case, its your advice people want to be most wary of as you'll just be spouting back things said by others.

I know what your saying but its not the case. This site causes phenominal bandwagons that can lead people to make bad decisions. I'm pointing out some of these lines of thought are pure sddduuuuupid. If you can see how well people have done in previous years then you can give weight to what each person is saying.

He will play in the coming weeks as champs league = rotation.

Nasri is a very direct player and had a high yield vs spurs but to my knowledge he only had 1 good fantasy season for arsenal...last year. His high price x roation + other players in same range with better fixtures and less rotation = DON'T KEEP.

He may have the odd good week and you'll curse dropping him (much like i did with dzeko) but all in all you are better off in the knowledge your players are going to play...ramsey, petrov, modric, vdv, guitterez, lampard all far better prospects for a mill or two more or less.

Absolutely. I've watched every match for the last 3 GW's. Guiterrez has difficult fixtures for next 3 weeks so wouldnt put him in yet.

Modric has been playing far more advanced than previous years and has been unlucky not to score in the last couple weeks.

Lampard...watch this space. He is looking very dangerous. Another big week coming up. Just a shame Luiz and bosingwa combined to screw up the possility of chelsea getting a big score on sunday

As someone said yesterday, Aguero is a professional...he's fresh from injury and hasn't play too much. They're paying him money to play some football, and it isn't unreasonable to ask him not to play 90 mins in a Champ's game and 90 mins in an Pl match. He will get rested for Carling Cup, but he damn well better start for the two following matches. I agree with you Jason, captaining Aguero next weekend is a brilliant idea.

    Thinking about
    OUT-Sturridge and Ward
    IN-Balo and Wilko
    4 point hit

Just made way into the top 20K
Should I sit and only have Silva for MC vs Wolves
Wouldn't surprise me if Mancinni rolls out a "B" team vs McCarthy's bunch

Why Sturridge out? Super Mario could easily be rested for Wolves. I'd stick, maybe switch De Laet to Wilkinson?

To all those shipping Mata out...I think its a bad move just before Torres comes back...they seem to link up well...a couple of good weeks coming up for both I think!

I had him just feel VDV offers more

      1. Pens
      2. More goals

mata may get more assists but overall VDV shades it

VDV is a better pick now as he has no europa league so 1 match a week

Could be right...but we know vdv can score big in the PL, he is scoring big in the PL and has arguably easier fixtures in a team where he only has to fend off defoe....mata has more competition

True that. Spurs fixtures are more favorable in the long run, imo. Know this though, once Rafa gets injured its back to Mata or Adebayor for me.

Let torres warm up for a week, see how well he does against arsenal then go from there! Sturridge is going to play no matter what... Don't double up on chelsea strikers. Get Torres in for the easier fixtures after Arsenal.

    My team
    Begovic/Worm
    Bos/Enrique/Shawx/Woodgate/Ekotto
    Bale/Nasri/Petrov/Eagles/Ramsey
    Rvp/Sturridge/Suarez
2 Frees only want to change strike force and possibly mids. Was thinking RVP and Sturridge to 2 of Dzeko or Ade with Aguero or Rooney or Hernandez. Or just Sturridge to Dzeko/Ade. Thoughts??

on my WC this week...is it worth keeping Suarez for one more game (and keeping enough cash to do Suarez to RvP the week after if fit)? It will cost me at least 0.1m extra to hold off...but feel i should give Suarez one last outing (had him since GW1)

I know Suarez got killed on this site for all his missed chances, but he looked really strong to me. Another day and slightly better luck and he could have grabbed 4. Giving him one more week makes sense to me - plus RVP has a tough game coming up.

Would it be madness in a few weeks once sturrige price rises abit more sell him get torres downgrade nasri to a cheaper option ?

    good move or bad ?

For those asking whether they should keep nasri

    2008/09 2398mins 6goals 2assists Total 112
    2009/10 1880mins 2goals 4assists Total 83
    2010/11 2383mins 10goals 1assist Total 134

Pretty much only had 1 good season...even Stephen Ireland had 1 good season. I would much rather have milner than nasri if you ask me.

      That's a really unfair description / summary.

Look at the "minutes" played - he suffered from injuries and rotation.

Points per minute (or per game) and he was Top 5 midfielder.

Not saying he's nailed on at City (he's not) and nor would I want to own him by any means (Silva is the heartbeat of that team and a 100x better buy / hold) but unfair to compare to Ireland...

Nasri shouldn't be owned - but not because of this analysis - because of his price and the other alternatives out there.

        2008/9 26.6 games = 4.2pts/game
        2009/10 21 games = 4 pts/game
        2010/11 26.5games = 5pts/game

Pretty decent output...when he plays...not setting the world alight. But what you can see is he has missed a quater of game time and will prob miss even more witht he rotation situation at city. Not worth having IMO
