After previously skipping over to Italy and Portugal, our next Scout Report for European Fantasy managers participating in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game takes a shorter journey, with 2011 Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund coming under the microscope…

The Tactics

Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund side broke onto the scene last year and never looked back. A side most youthful and exuberant started well and never let up as they won again and again -even putting the likes of the almighty Bayern Munich to shame- in their title winning campaign.

The loss of Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid is not one which has been taken lightly at the Westfalenstadion and while trying to find a like-for-like replacement is a fruitless endeavour, Dortmund have been able to add to their squad all the same. While sticking to the German formation du jour (4-2-3-1) Klopp now has options available to him to mix and match as injury, preference and form collide.

UEFA Average Position Map

The first-choice defence remains the same as that which conceded a mere 22 goals (almost half of the second best in the Bundesliga) last time around. Roman Weidenfeller (1) remains the final blockade inbetween the posts doing all he can as he was last season.

The partnership of Mats Hummels (15) and Neven Subotic (4) are the solid base on which the foundations of the Dortmund side are built around with Lukasz Pszczek (26) charging down the right-hand flank and Marcel Schmelzer (29) doing just the same on the opposite side of the pitch.

Further forward is where the slight hand of rotation can begin to show with a few of Klopp’s squad fighting out for a couple of positions. Last season, it was Sven Bender (22) who starred as the ball-winner alongside Sahin, but Sebastian Kehl (5) and new signing Ilkay Gundogan (21) are all fighting for a spot, though the latter is not of the same calibre as the now-departed Turkish maestro.

Three further midfielders are then employed to support the sole striker in various different ways. Mario Gotze (11) is a shoe-in for automatic selection and will be more frequently than not employed on the right hand side- equally adept playing out wide or coming inwards and using his abilities as a playmaker.

That leaves two spots and, once again, three main players competing for them with a competent back-up in Jakub Blaszczykowski (16) in times of woe. Shinji Kagawa (23) provides a strong goal threat from attacking midfield, Kevin Grosskreutz (19) is best called upon to provide width, while main summer signing Ivan Perisic (14) is a happy amalgam of all the aforementioned’s talents, having joined for 5 million Euros after shining for Club Brugge last season.

Lucas Barrios (18) is generally the number one forward but, having been intermittently injured since the summer, the burden has so far been left to the only real deputy in Polish international Robert Lewandowski (9) this season.

The Ones To Watch

Neven Subotic: Mats Hummels is the heart of the back-four and, ultimately, the better of Dortmund’s two centre-backs, but he comes at a premium price of 6.4 while his team-mate Subotic is just under a cool million cheaper. A smart investor will buy the more affordable option and put the spare money to good use. Full-backs Lukasz Piszczk and Marcel Schmelzer also come in at roughly the same figure so could be considered equally as opportune purchase.

Mario Gotze: Not that the country needs it -they’ve got Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos to name but a few supreme talents- but, in Mario Gotze, Dortmund have a world class player in the making. The 19 year-old looks every bit the player already and at 7.9 will offer the chance to double your investment with his craft and ingenuity. There’s a reason sides like Arsenal and Manchester United are keeping incredibly close tabs on this young man.

Shinji Kagawa: The Japan international hasn’t been having as strong a start to his 2011/12 campaign as he did in his rookie term last year. However, at just 6.9 in price he will provide more than enough spark to potentially light up Champions League squads over the next three Matchdays at least. Having some of his main competition in Grosskreutz and Perisic “Out of Position” in the worst way (down as forwards) it also makes it an easier choice.

Robert Lewandowski: As a long term, heck even mid to short term purchase, Lewandowski is a risky proposition. At 6.9, though, and with a question mark over whether his main striking foe will be thrown in at the deep end, the big Pole should be a more than cheeky “differential” ahead of the crucial home tie with Olympiakos next weekend.

Would downgrade Boswinga - Walker/Shawcross/BAE or if wanted to save some money Wilkinson.
Midfield is good, despite missing VDV.
Up front is good, maybe shift out Suárez in the coming weeks.

Cahill and Coleman were both bench starters, because (it is said) they have been lazy and useless all season, and he was getting fully fit. He and Vellios look their best players atm.

I don't see Cahill being on the bench too much, but I could definitely see Drenthe displacing Coleman. He can play on both wings too which is a bonus, I reckon he'll be a regular.... just praying he stays quiet now until GW12 so he doesn't shoot up in price too much!

Indeed, Drenthe would make 2/3 for me and make it possible to get RVP in next week.

I'm actually vaguely considering going with 4 in this range, to give me Rooney, RVP, Aguero, Silva, Larsson, Drenthe, Ramsey, [Walters/Cabaye/Anderson] .... verrrry tempted. Will depend on the respective form of VDV, Sturridge, Aguero and the midrangers, but it could pay off hugely.

I'd say he could be an absolute bargain if he can keep holding down starts- he's only played 222 minutes so far, and has already outscored Bale, Walcott, Kuyt and Downing, and isn't that far off the likes of Arteta, Yaya and Adam.

Once the United game is out of the way their fixtures are dreamy too. Reckon he could hit 7m before Christmas.

Considering he picked up 8 last season in a little over double the playing time (he's managed already this season) that's quite the achievement.

But if you think he will start scoring then you know what to do.... get him and handband him. He's only about 2% owned as well at the moment so would be a huge differential if you did get him and he banged in a hatrick against the Arsenal!

    Hiya lads,

    Thoughts on this overall team?
(NOTE: Just including main body of team as my subs include Ruddy, Simpson, De Laet & Ferguson and are not my priority at the moment).

    Given
    Enrique – BAE – N.Taylor
    VDV – Nasri – Gerrard – Walters
    RVP – Sturridge – Suarez

I am doing shockingly bad overall and in mini leagues and have no idea where I am going wrong (subs to blame for part I suppose & wildcard already played).

Overall thoughts? Who on earth to captain??? And reckon Nasri will paly vs Wolves this GW?

Luis Suarez; I think the guy's a tremendous player but from a fantasy perspective he's quickly starting to lose appeal in my eyes; here's why. He's the 9th most expensive forward in the FPL but ranks only 20th in the PPG category (15 of those players preceding him are cheaper options). His mediocre Value (season) ranking (25th) is sandwiched in between two non well known non superstars in Helguson & Lita but even that stat pails into insignificance with his Value (form) ranking - 34th.

For a guy who's owned by nearly 1m players, he is definitely underachieving.

Its not a matter of time, its a matter of skill. If you hit the target and its saved, credit goes to the keeper. But, if you hit the target repeatedly and still do not score, either your shot is weak or the directed angle of the ball towards goal with the awareness of the keeper is in doubt.

Apart from Evra it's almost impossible to guess United's back line lately, especially given their terrible form at the back. I think you could flip a coin on Jones starting tbh!

Trying desperately to get some Utd coverage in to my wc team, but I'm struggling to see consistent starters/value. With RVP and a couple other expensive "musts" Rooney is struggling to fit in (or score many points lately anyway). I can probably stretch to Hernandez but is he too much of a risk? I have a feeling there is fantastic value in Cleverley, but again it's a bit of a risk, albeit a less expensive one. Thoughts?

The market dictates the price of players. Either move with it, or get left behind.

That's the spirit. One big happy nation of shopkeeping consumers.

Hey guys just want a few thoughts on my team.

    Vorm, Kenny
    Bos, Raylor, Enrique, Ward, DeLaet
    Mata, VDV, MPetrov, Dyer, Silva
    Sturridge, Suarez, RVP

Have 2 FT this week. 2.6 in the bank.
Happy to go without ManU until next gameweek but dont like having only 1 ManC player for this week. Seeing as tho their attack is so hard to predict I think i might just get in Kompany or Richards at the back for De Laet this week.
    Thoughts guys?

I'll take a stab, DeLaet would be a nice slot to cure, but with Kompany-- that's a rather rich back line IF you didn't start at original prices.

Then you are going postpone a decision on Aguerro for Suarez made possible by maybe Bos/for a 4.0 Defender until next week. Thus foregoing Aguerro in ManC v. Wolves with Ward on your team. The question, " WTF did I do, will arise about kickoff of that game?."-- I know it would in my mind. with four in the Chelsea/Arsenal close fist fight. Well the good news is either move will improve your team- Kompany or Aguerro. I am assuming Aguerro plays of course, which is easy for me. Good luck. Nice team as it is right now.

That's an animal of a team, no hits for this week as you've got VDV.
Issues to address would probably be Collins particularly because you already have given.
Seems a bit light up front but that midfield is great, that's all i have to say I guess..

Yup looking towards improving the defence:
        1) Collins
        2) Brown
        3) Given

The front line haven't done too bad. I'm happy with 15/GW from them. And they've delivered so far.

Yes, strong team-- only Given is "giving" way to Begovic. That move would only be worth it, if you had two free and were about to lose one.

Not sure about Collins-- don't know him offhand. and I bear the Moses cross like you, ....why this guy can't score is ridiculous, he plays right on the front line and does fine, except for the scoring part. LOL.

I'm heading more towards Krul/Ruddy cos Super-Vorm is doing a great job frankly. So the cheapest options look ideal.

If you can do both Walters and VDV this week, that would be tempting even for a hit. I think you have a great chance of breaking even after one week and your team and value would both improve for several weeks.

Either move improves your team. I love Walters and wish I had him-- points, cheap, OOP (plays forward). VDV is going to go up in price until he is hurt or fails to score two weeks in a row. Your other choice is Aguerro or another ManC forward, which is both difficult to pick and decide who to replace; but ManC is on a roll and one MAC forward will soon be more important than Suarez or Ade IMO.

DeLaet is just a tiny thorn to correct someday when you have two moves and nothing else to do-- that is because he is up one tenth-- so you don't lose money for a week and it's possible his teammate could be injured and he would replace them as a starter.
