After previously skipping over to Italy and Portugal, our next Scout Report for European Fantasy managers participating in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game takes a shorter journey, with 2011 Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund coming under the microscope…

The Tactics

Jurgen Klopp’s Dortmund side broke onto the scene last year and never looked back. A side most youthful and exuberant started well and never let up as they won again and again -even putting the likes of the almighty Bayern Munich to shame- in their title winning campaign.

The loss of Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid is not one which has been taken lightly at the Westfalenstadion and while trying to find a like-for-like replacement is a fruitless endeavour, Dortmund have been able to add to their squad all the same. While sticking to the German formation du jour (4-2-3-1) Klopp now has options available to him to mix and match as injury, preference and form collide.

UEFA Average Position Map

The first-choice defence remains the same as that which conceded a mere 22 goals (almost half of the second best in the Bundesliga) last time around. Roman Weidenfeller (1) remains the final blockade inbetween the posts doing all he can as he was last season.

The partnership of Mats Hummels (15) and Neven Subotic (4) are the solid base on which the foundations of the Dortmund side are built around with Lukasz Pszczek (26) charging down the right-hand flank and Marcel Schmelzer (29) doing just the same on the opposite side of the pitch.

Further forward is where the slight hand of rotation can begin to show with a few of Klopp’s squad fighting out for a couple of positions. Last season, it was Sven Bender (22) who starred as the ball-winner alongside Sahin, but Sebastian Kehl (5) and new signing Ilkay Gundogan (21) are all fighting for a spot, though the latter is not of the same calibre as the now-departed Turkish maestro.

Three further midfielders are then employed to support the sole striker in various different ways. Mario Gotze (11) is a shoe-in for automatic selection and will be more frequently than not employed on the right hand side- equally adept playing out wide or coming inwards and using his abilities as a playmaker.

That leaves two spots and, once again, three main players competing for them with a competent back-up in Jakub Blaszczykowski (16) in times of woe. Shinji Kagawa (23) provides a strong goal threat from attacking midfield, Kevin Grosskreutz (19) is best called upon to provide width, while main summer signing Ivan Perisic (14) is a happy amalgam of all the aforementioned’s talents, having joined for 5 million Euros after shining for Club Brugge last season.

Lucas Barrios (18) is generally the number one forward but, having been intermittently injured since the summer, the burden has so far been left to the only real deputy in Polish international Robert Lewandowski (9) this season.

The Ones To Watch

Neven Subotic: Mats Hummels is the heart of the back-four and, ultimately, the better of Dortmund’s two centre-backs, but he comes at a premium price of 6.4 while his team-mate Subotic is just under a cool million cheaper. A smart investor will buy the more affordable option and put the spare money to good use. Full-backs Lukasz Piszczk and Marcel Schmelzer also come in at roughly the same figure so could be considered equally as opportune purchase.

Mario Gotze: Not that the country needs it -they’ve got Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos to name but a few supreme talents- but, in Mario Gotze, Dortmund have a world class player in the making. The 19 year-old looks every bit the player already and at 7.9 will offer the chance to double your investment with his craft and ingenuity. There’s a reason sides like Arsenal and Manchester United are keeping incredibly close tabs on this young man.

Shinji Kagawa: The Japan international hasn’t been having as strong a start to his 2011/12 campaign as he did in his rookie term last year. However, at just 6.9 in price he will provide more than enough spark to potentially light up Champions League squads over the next three Matchdays at least. Having some of his main competition in Grosskreutz and Perisic “Out of Position” in the worst way (down as forwards) it also makes it an easier choice.

Robert Lewandowski: As a long term, heck even mid to short term purchase, Lewandowski is a risky proposition. At 6.9, though, and with a question mark over whether his main striking foe will be thrown in at the deep end, the big Pole should be a more than cheeky “differential” ahead of the crucial home tie with Olympiakos next weekend.

How do people feel in general about point hits. It seems everytime I take a 4 point hit, I lose out, but whenever I take a 12 point hit(which is rare), like last week, and a few times last year, I break even and end up getting in my preferred team and making some cash. I think its difficult to pick a player who will outscore another by 4 points when it comes to premium players, but averaged out among 3 or 4 players, its easier to say that the group will outscore the other group by lets say 12, especially if all players transferred in have a good shot at scoring points. Thoughts?

Avoid them in general, but if you're confident the new players will make the point hit back quickly, might as well go for I reckon.

I used to take loads of hits, but now I've started to use my free transfers wisely and it's paying off. I would only take a hit for a forward of midfielder with favourable fixtures. I wouldn't for a defender, because even if they keep a clean sheet, you're only gaining 2 points in profit.

2 points is still a return and not a loss, all points count and add up over the course of a season.

I lost my mini league of 40 people last year by 2 points so they all count

Doesn't work that way. You sell a defender for a 4 pt hit. That defender scores 2 pts in the gw so you are 6 pts down. You need your new defender to score over 6.

Maybe that's why you didn't win you ml last season 😉

I've got no problem taking a 4 point hit occasionally, but any more than that is a no-go for me really. All it takes is one bad week for a couple of players (or a surprise good one for those you took out) and you've lost a considerable chunk of points. I've never failed to make a profit on a hit but it's luck as well as judgement, and never more so than this season.

I only think it's worth it when you've got two players you need to get rid of ASAP and who won't do well over the next several gameweeks... like if you were planning on taking out a Newcastle defender this week and one of your starting mids got injured, or if you'd doubled up on the Newcastle defence 'til now.

Think about Nani for a second and if its worth keeping him right now. You already have Rooney for United captain coverage, Nani will be playing alot, Fergie may limit him as United are far from qulified in Champions league and Nani to be playing 2 big games during int'l break vs bosnia. VdV is out of european squad,a decent sched as well, Holland qualified for Euro finals, he is in good form and a London derby with QPR. Another big haul for VDV and his price may go up, whereas a Nani 45 minute cameo may see his price come back down again. The biggest problem I see for you keeping Nani this week is that if he plays, its a tough away game, wheres tottenham should do well at home vs qpr. If Nani plays this game and doesnt give you points, you will be worried about your choice as he will play 90 minutes in champions league and then miss the good gw 11 fixture at home with Sunderland. If it was me, I would go Nani>VDV.

Two factors about Nani to DVD.
        1. QPR's result at Chelsea will have buoyed them.....might be tougher v Spurs (5 man midfield etc.).
        2. Man U will want strong instant response after ManC debacle. Strong lineup to get back on track....

It's possible, but I wouldn't get too cute. Morale will be high in the QPR camp but when it comes down to it, they barely clung on against a frustrated 9-man Chelsea. Spurs are on great form at the moment and VDV is the best of the lot.

Man U will be keen for a result, but Goodison is a tough venue for any team. They'll doubtless have another re-jigged lineup and Fergie will have an eye on the Galati game.

Plus, regardless of fixtures, VDV plays further up the field and is on penalty and free kick duties. I think he's a better bet than Nani for the whole season, if you have to pick between them.

      Torres, RVP, Rooney.

I'm currently in the intriguing position of having 6.5m in the bank and a solid-looking team for GW10 (Suarez, Torres - I'm backing him as a fun differential despite the tough fixture - and Balotelli for this week). I'm going with the cheap defence.

That 6.5 will drop to 0.1 though and I have to figure out a way of getting Norwich's Johnson out... any decent <4.6 midfield options for the medium-term? Reo-Coker? Karl Henry? I'm struggling.

Yeah, I was wanting to take a 1 week punt. Chances of getting it right is slim though. Would be nice to keep the player for 2 weeks.

Let's say you pick one of nasri/Milner/Johnson and they play this week you will be on edge next week for gw 11. If they don't play this week you will be sitting on the floor come gw 12.

      😕

I actually think Kun is the best bet as he will surely play a part in at least 1 of the next 2 if not both.

It's a toughie. What you should really be concerned about is the Champions League fixture four days later. You can bet yo sweet ass there's going to be rotation. Nasri and Silva have started all 3 champions league fixtures thus far so I fancy both to be on the bench on Saturday. Conversely Milner hasn't started in the CL yet, and is in form, so he would seem your best midfield punt for the weekend.

And Kun? Only 28 min in last CL game and 74m vs ManU.

Every single team in my league has Roonpig. No one has Kun.

Major risk, but major benefits if i get it right.

The more I think about it the more tmepted I am. I don't fancy Rooney vs EVE. If I get it wrong I bring Rooney back next week. Or, do Mata-->Nani.

        win win.

Wouldn't read too much into the 74 mins v Man U, the game was wrapped up by then.

Kun has started two of the 3 CL games. I can only imagine he played 28 mins vs Villereal to keep him fresh for Man U. I think there's every chance Aguero will start the next CL game and be rested at the weekend with Balotelli and Dzeko starting upfront. Mancini rested all his big guns againt Villa and came through unscathed, I can see it happenning again at the weekend.

That said, if he starts you could well be on to a winner. And as it happens I don't see Rooney as much of a threat this GW anyway!

I've got Balotelli. Aguero is too much of a risk for me. There's a chance Balotelli will be rested too, especially given Mancini's glowing comments about him, but Dzeko isn't in the same class as those two and I think it's more likely Aguero will be benched.

Im thinking of options to replace nasri after this week 10

Walcott is one of those options

    Positives on Walcott

    Good differential
    More nailed on than Nasri
Good run of fixtures after Chelsea game

    Negatives on Walcott

Poor form so far this season - bad luck or just bad play not sure

Is he only really useful as an impact sub as his points to mins ratio is far different to last season .

    2010 /2011

Suarez will score plenty of goals and he is a world class player. His time will come 🙂 A mixture of not playing his best and a bit of bad luck has meant he hasnt got as many points as he could. Im confident he will score well next few games though.

Well he can't finish. I watched him a lot of times. His max is goal or assist and even if he score he isn't getting any BP, like in "the Carroll" case. Most frustrating captain ever. I could have had Bendtner, from him I expect to miss, but he is good value atm, has excellent fixtures and form.

I am thinking Suarez replacement: Rooney, Aguero or Bendtner. I lost 0.2 on Rooney for nothing. And I have to make another transfer. The WBA game is tough IMO, they are good defensively recently.

Morning Christina, I sold Briggs I had too and if I make a 4 point hit, I will think it for myself that it is for Briggs. So the forward transfer will be for free. And yeah finally good week, I said to myself last week, that I am going back to be bases of FF and that paid off.

He has just had a bad start to the season and is not on form but he could hit form at any time. He is a fantastic finisher from when Ive seen him playing with Uruguay and Ajax and end of last season. I think its just a matter of time!

Fair enough about the bonus but once he starts scoring he will pick up a few bonus points too I reckon! Id hold onto him anyway for the next two fixtures and then sell him! Thats what Im doing anyway 🙂

Selling ASAP is possible if Mancini states something that will reassure me that he'll start. If not Rooney next game will come in. But I hate so much to have him in my team, so I could go for Bendtner. I see points in the next 6 for him def.

Christina wait for Mancini press, than we'll know is Kun worth the risk. If he starts he is definitely worth the risk. Ballo, Dzeko braces, now its his turn.

About Mata I went against him, I want my 10m mids to be explosive and to feel confident to captain them. I don't know what's your team so I could mislead you.

City beating United 1-6 wasn’t a freak result. They beat Tottenham 1-5 as well! Most of their games they have scored more than 2 goals…

Same here, too much a risk going without him as he could easily score a brace/hattrick against a poor Wolves side. Not too sure if i'll captain him though because of the rotation risk.

This is crazytalk, I wouldn't waste a move on him this week. He is definitely GOING to play heavy minutes at El Madrigal. He's played there, Dzeko, and Balo have not. If you don't mind not being disappointed by him not appearing or only having tiny minutes in case of a crisis...at home...against Wolves (yeah let that sink in). Then he is a decent punt for this week and excellent season investment. But if you're into taking cut-rate gambles my money would be on Adam Johnson.

wouldnt do that. Johnson is clearly a peripheral figure at city and looks like continuing to be so unfortunately. So whilst Aguero might not play that many minutes this coming gwk, he will afterwards. Whereas Johnson wont.

I'm pot committed elsewhere this week, so I can't anyway. The Johnson lottery served me well last season, and the next game or two will bring the telescope in focus as far his rotation. Betting money says though that Johnson will play a part tonight as well as Sunday. DeJong gets a slight run-out as well. He is only peripheral in your mind and a bunch of others, he serves a purpose for Mancini. He is a paid assasin...the 'nine-behind-the ball killer' Mick can play 5 in the mid or 4, it won't matter.

Great thanks. So I would be confident to fight for this gameweek without VDV... The 2nd team is my rival's team in the mini-league. Hopefully it pays off with Adebayor as Spurs coverage..

2 for me, but look to swap Suarez out for Ade after GW11. Also weighing up ShawX, Warnock and BAE as replacement for Bosingwa (most likely BAE cos of Spuds fixtures, and I already have Stoke coverage at the back in Begovic)

Need to get ShawX in to cover Stoke's good home run in the next 4 GW. Do i bring him in for Bos, Enrique or Kompany?

I say Enrique. Liv can't defend, have bad fixtures after the Swa game and the only CS"s for Liv came when they were against 10 or 9 men
