Our Watchlist rankings, listing player recommendations for the next three-to-four Gameweeks, have now been updated ahead of Gameweek 10 and are available in the sidebar as always. Read on for a summary of this week’s significant gains and losses.

As anticipated in last week’s Watchlist update, Stoke’s Asmir Begovic climbs to the top of the goalkeeper rankings with three home fixtures in four to come. In truth, Begovic has very little opposition, with Wigan’s Ali Al Habsi the only low-to-mid price option facing up to favourable fixtures over the next month. City’s Joe Hart ranks second, offering a route to City clean sheets without a real threat of rotation. Further down, Sunderland’s Simon Mignolet offers an alternative value proposition with his three Stadium of Light encounters in the next four Gameweeks.

The defender rankings have shifted markedly since last week, with Newcastle’s assets now omitted from our thinking, ahead of their punishing schedule. Both Liverpool’s Jose Enrique and Chelsea’s Jose Boswingwa suffer drops in the rankings, allowing City’s Vincent Kompany to claim top spot with his stronger fixtures. Stoke’s Ryan Shawcross and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker climb into the top three for very different reasons- the pair have good schedules ahead of them, although while Shawcross offers clean sheet potential, Walker’s appeal is definitely in attacking quarters, having proved an effective weapon down Harry Redknapp’s right-flank.

United’s Phil Jones holds his position, although there is some doubt over his starting role having been dropped to the bench against City. Should he edge his way back into Alex Ferguson’s plans, we can expect a climb in our rankings with strong United fixtures to come. Other candidates in Ferguson’s rearguard may also feature, although right now, with Everton away next, the likes of Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic represent expensive gambles.

Budget options such as Sunderland’s Wes Brown, Norwich’s Leon Barnett and Bolton’s Dedryck Boyata are all prospects to consider, as we look to clear funds out of our defences. Stoke’s Andy Wilkinson is perhaps the most intriguing option in this price bracket however – he looks to have cemented the right-back role and should start again when Newcastle visit the Britannia on Monday. Tonight’s Carling Cup team-sheet from Tony Pulis should offer some further clues on that.

Rafael Van der Vaart climbs to the top of the most wanted list in our midfield rankings with strong form and fixtures to come. His ascent coincides with United’s slip in form, which has seen Nani fall out of favour with some Fantasy managers. In second spot, the threat of rotation hangs over the sublime David Silva, as he goes into the weekend clash with Wolves ahead of the Champions League tie in Villareal next week.

Below the United and City heavyweights, the likes of Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, Stoke’s Jon Walters and Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon all offer good mid-price options. Everton’s Royston Drenthe, so devastating at the Cottage on Sunday, makes his first appearance in the rankings and is another intriguing alternative as David Moyes’s side embark on a kind run of opponents.

With Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Juan Mata and Clint Dempsey all facing up to tougher schedules in the coming weeks, their prices see them drop in our reckoning. Below them, a second tier of mid-price offerings stack up, headed by West Brom’s skipper Chris Brunt.

The forward rankings include familiar names as always and, at the top, it’s no surprise to see Robin Van Persie hold firm. A trip to Stamford Bridge could put the buffers on his recent charge, although fixtures to follow that should see him recover fully in the month ahead.

Wayne Rooney should slip back into vogue as his fixtures improve considerably once the trip to Goodison has passed this weekend. The United man is favoured to Sergio Aguero this week, purely due to the questions mark surrounding the Argentine’s start against Wolves.

Emmanuel Adebayor is the big climber – he shifts above the misfiring Luis Suarez, with the Tottenham striker enjoying strong mid-term fixtures. Suarez owners will hope for returns against West Brom and then Swansea in Gameweek 11 – beyond that, things stiffen up for Liverpool and the Uruguayan.

Nicklas Bendtner is another striker enjoying a boost in the rankings – his three home fixtures arrive on the back of some very strong form since he snuggled back under the wing of Steve Bruce. The Dane arguably offers greater security than City’s Mario Balotelli, as uncertainty in Roberto Mancini’s front line continues to dent the potential of both Balotelli and Edin Dzeko.

Fernando Torres is one notable omission, we will wait on his display against Arsenal this weekend, although with Daniel Sturridge offering a route to the Chelsea attack at a far cheaper price, the Spaniard looks hard to justify ahead of the likes of Rooney, Van Persie and Aguero.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Morning guys. If you don't like long posts, please look away now 🙂

Need some advice if the rest of you could be so kind. Here's where I'm at. My doubts last week about having Mata and Adebayor instead of VDV and Sturridge were vindicated (mainly by VDV) over the weekend.

The VDV bandwagon is now rolling and it's a very pressing decision whether to jump on or not. This would most likely involve doubling up on Spurs with both VDV and Ade (have you noticed he hasn't scored a goal in 4 PL games?).

It would also be Mata > VDV. However looking ahead to GW11, the original plan was always to downgrade Mata to a 6m mid in order to bring in the Roonpig for Ade, not to upgrade Mata!. I was looking at a very expensive bumper frontline of RVP, Roonpig and Suarez for GW11.

    SOOOOOOOOOOO Should I...

    A) Give up the dream of that frontline and just do Mata > VDV. This would also most likely mean no United coverage for GW11.

    B) Do the downgrade (or save the transfer) and do Ade > Rooney for GW11.

I'm going with A, too hard to ignore VDV's form right now and plus Rooney's form doesn't look too good right now so you can afford to go without him.

Doing Suarez to Roonpig is another possibility but, similar to my Ade to Roonpig move, if I want to do this without a hit in GW11 then I need to downgrade Mata either way (ruling out VDV).

Okay cool, little outside of the box but lets discuss.

First off I can do Mata to VDV by itself so I'll not be taking a hit to bring in Cleverley this week so I assume you mean Jarvis to Cleverley for GW11. Is Cleverley enough United coverage for that home game against Sunderland?

Sounds like one for the post GW11 wild card to be honest.

similar situation as went with mata and ade ahead of vdv and sturridge.

i'm not switching as ade has been playing well without scoring and law of averages suggest he will come good while it's very unlikely vdv will continue his scoring rate.

i also think mata will get more returns now torres is back as he will link up much better with him than drogba and torres is very unselfish in front of goal, often playing others in when most strikers would shoot.

Hey IT...been struggling to control my WC all week...so haven pretty much looked at every option possible! I think Man U cover is going to be pretty important after this week. And my view is that they are best covered by Rooney (FKs, Pens, bonus?), despite him not being in the best of 'form'.

On the flip side, i think VdV is going to be a pretty good bet (injury permitting) for the foreseeable. He'll get rotated now and again with Defoe...but hopefully after 70mins. the fact he's on free-kicks, penas and loves to get in the box means he's a better option than Ade for me. (weirdly though, i think he might disappoint A LOT of people this weekend, me included, and give us a West Ham at home performance from last season- he's in there for the long term though)

So in short, is there any way you can get both VdV and Rooney? how about: Mata -> VdV this week. Then either Ade or Suarez to Rooney in either GW 11/12? (would require a big defender downgrade i suspect?)

on a side note, im pretty sure i'm putting all my eggs in the strikers basket for now and going with Aguero, RvP and Rooney.....

Tough decision but ultimately you should get VDV, and drop Suarez out of the dream front line that you were eventually trying to assemble. When the time comes to do that transfer, get in whichever more mid-price striker seems the right choice at the time, using form, fixtures or whichever mode of selection takes your fancy.

I'm biased, being a long term Suarez denier who has recently seen other members of the boards saying the sort of things that I've been saying for a while now, but thats the best option available for you. The prospect of a bigger striker, like Aguero for example, might be worth denying youself VDV for, but Suarez simply not worth it in my opinion.

I'm no lover of Suarez myself, but to be fair to him he did everything but score last Saturday. If any one of them had gone in then he would have got the three bonus points and we'd be having a different conversation now.

In my opinion VDV will score more goals than Suarez from now on, get one more point for each goal, possibly get more bonus as a result, and certainly free up another striker spot in Impressive Tackle's squad, which as we all know is more valuable than a midfield spot.

Thanks Jonah. While reading your reply I got that gut-wrenching feeling when someone is right but you don't want to believe it. Suarez is wasteful and Swansea seem like the kind of team that could keep it tight at Anfield in GW11.

        Essentially what you're advising is:
        GW10: Mata > VDV
        GW11: Suarez > Rooney and Ade > 5.6m striker

I may have to go with this 🙂

I too think VDV is a priority, especially with Spurs upcoming fixtures. And at least you'll get another look at Suarez this week - if he fails to deliver yet again, no matter how close he comes, he has to be sacrificed I feel.

Looking at your team, I see that downgrading Mata would leave Silva as the lone "heavy hitter" in your midfield so I think the upgrade to VDV makes the most sense. You can maneuver the funds for Rooney out of Jarvis and Bosingwa, although it will take a few weeks. Or just upgrade Adebayor to Hernandez.

I honestly think you need to begin shifting funds from your defence into MF. I'm so exasperated with defenders that I'm even considering dropping Kompany and looking to get big hitters and captaincy options. Sadly it's all about being pragmatic in this game and whilst Baines is fantasy gold and you've kept patient through the tough fixtures, I think you need to cut your losses and shift your funds asap as you have 3 5th mf options, 2 of whom are playing.

I hear you Corrigan - that above is shifting Beauswinger out. I am not now getting rid of Baines with the fixture turnaround AND the DGW on the horizon. It is my strategy not to spend too much in the midfield, but I want Silva, as that seems to have been my biggest error ...

Looks fixture friendly. I like it.

Depending on whether you've got FT's or thinking on playing a WC a couple of thoughts -

Get rid of Ward. Minolet in for Krul as SUN have a better run than NEW.

Downgrade Agbonlahor to Sturridge so you can upgrade one of your 3 cheap mids. Would be a bit worried about Cleverley's game time with Fletcher back in the picture.

Is the slightly lightweight midfield to accommodate Baines?

Baines, Warnock, Ward, Johson, Clevery, Tiote aren't good picks according to me, but you have a good core of the team. Consider Bendtner for Gabby after next week. Nice heavy mids and attackers. Good to see, that you aren't in that Suarez trap like us. There are too much good 6m midfielders ATM. I would be spoiled to choose right now and you have J., C., T combo 😀

      Sess, Larsson
      Brunt
      Rambo
      Walters, Ethers,

Baines is far too expensive for his returns. Swapping him out for a cheaper defender would give you a lot of extra cash and I can't believe you want him in your starting XI against United. Hell, you could have Kompany or Richards and still have a decent chunk of extra funds to ship Tiote or upgrade Johnson after this GW.

Hi everyone, I'm interested to know what you think of my team and in particular my policy which has been leaning towards owning all the big strikers. I've pretty much decided to keep the forward line rigid, because I have faith in all three of the players whatever the fixtures, and then using my free transfers to keep my budget midfielders in good fixtures. This way, I'm confident that each week I can play four mid-price midfielders all of whom have a game that's at least light blue on the "Attacking" mode of the season ticker.

Basically I'm banking on the fact that Aguero, Rooney and RVP should be more than the worth the 2.0 million extra funds that it takes to get them over Silva, Nani, VDV etc. With these three in my team, a little bit of luck and my captain should be scoring the vast majority of gameweeks.

    So Rate My Squad!

    Given Vorm.

    Ward, Brown, Kompany, Enrique, Simpson.

    Brunt, Sinclair, Ramsey, Walters, Petrov.

    Rooney, Van Persie, Aguero.

Can this bizzarrely top heavy team work?

P.S. No comments about the lack of flexibility please, because I have two transfers saved up so this is not an issue for me.

Yeah I think there is room to accommodate 1 expensive mid in your strategy. Perhaps downgrading rotation risk aguero for Torres (hardly a downgrade) and downgrading Kompany (bad fixtures) and you should be able to afford one of Nani, VDV, Silver

Mind all of you, that poor fixtures does not mean, no clean sheet. Average and weak teams defenders have done well, not because their fixtures were great. Getting rid of the Jose brothers now will haunt you later.

I only have Silva as Man City cover and obviously am not selling him.

My front 3 is Sturridge, Adebyaour and Suarez - my mid field is VDV, Silva, Mata and Cabaye/ Dyer - I have 3.2 in the bank.

I am going to keep the faith in Suarez and Mata for now and am not selling any Spurs cover.

I could however do Studge to Balotelli or Dyer/Cabaye to Milner or Johnson - for a 4 point hit.

Obviously I will make no decision until Saturday morning but any thoughts?!

Balotelli is not worth a 4 point hit with his temperament and rotation threat.

Milner and AJ are too risky as well. You have Silva, that's the key to City coverage.

On the plus side Newcastle can hardly be classed as free scoring, 12 goals so far this season. I think I'll play Shawcross this season, if Stoke can keep out Liverpool, Tottenham and only let United get 1 past them they have a decent chance of keeping Newcastle out.

I have a very similar team.

I understand your frustration with Given - I really thought he'd be a must have with Villa's usually reliable back 4 and McLeish in charge.

Apart from that though I really don't think you've got too much to worry about.

Perosnally i'm probably going to bring in VdV for Young which is a risk as I then have no United coverage but I just think VdV will score more points assuming he stays fit.

I want to keep Nani and Silva as they are my only attacking players from City and ManU so ditching Suarez is my only option to get on the fast moving VDV express. Graham would become Bendtner (probably) in two weeks as well.

Rooney looks way off the boil and has done for several weeks. Nani is cheaper for coverage and someone you can leave in your team long term. You cannot afford to be treading water with a 12 m striker whilst he sorts his head out. Toughest fixture for Rooney at Goodison. It may be his acid test. I've sold in the WC and looking if there's a backlash before bringing him back in for the nice fixtures.

the more i see everyone talking Silva up...the more i worry that i am completely mad for leaving him out of my WC team?!
Maybe i havent watched him enough, but i get the impression that he's going to, quite often, be the 'assister of the assist'? There's no doubting he's one of the best players in the league, if not the best, but FF point wise, while i think he'll score well, i think Aguero will be more explosive and therefore a better captain option (IF he plays!)

Silva will sometimes be the assister of the assist. He'll also sometimes be the assister - like that magnificant volleyed pass for Dzeko against United - and sometimes the goalscorer - like that goal against United. He's excellent as a striker (look at Spain's last international against Scotland) as well as a playmaker and has been the best player in the PL this year.

I wildcarded and he was just about the only player I left in. Had him since the start of the season and I'll have him 'til the end.

I think that if you click on a team at the bottom for example Swansea it shows what teams rotate well with Swansea and in which weeks to play each team.It also shows which weeks neither can rotate this is shown in red.

I want a midfielder that isn't Ferguson. I can get Brunt if I swap Woodgate for Wilkinson and AL Habsli for a 4.2 Gk. However, this whole wthing will cost me a whopping 12 points. The only reason i'm even considering it now is 'cos I doubt i'd be able to do it over the next 2 weeks. Brunt and Wilkinson are bound to go up soon, leaving me with Olm Man Woodgate and Non-Playing Ferguson for the long term.

Should I do it? My midefield is currently: Larsson, MPetrov, VDV, Silva, Ferguson

I wouldn't do that ... especially not for 12 points

      Why not something like:

      Woogdate --> Barnett
      Ferguson --> 4.5/4.6m midfielder?

And you don't have to do them both at the same time.

Wilkinson was on -40 odd last time i checked so he wont rise
the fact that the only GK who plays and is under 4.2 is Ruddy and he is 4.0 means you have 0.2 to work with so i dont get what you are trynna say..

After this week does anyone see any value in Hernandez rather than Rooney/Nani? I don't want to break up my midfield but can't really stretch to Rooney.

Potentially, I just don't know that he is ever a shoe in to start ... Welbeck & Berbatov pushing hard .... £10m is a lot to bench

Hernandez a one trick pony (its a good trick though) whereas Rooney & Nani are more likely to contribute a massive haul. So in summary I don't see the value.

"season keepers" also seem to change for people every week... when it started, it was rooney then young then aguero nd it keeps on changing... i dont understand why people are so reluctant to get rid of stars who are'nt doing well

    Vorm ( Krul)
Brown ; Taylor ; Kompany ; Enrique (Bos)
VDV ; Brunt ; Silva (Dyer ; Bannan)
    Rooney ; Bobby Z ; Aguero

don't want to get rid of roon, silva, and aguero because I can't afford them again and I see them as season keepers... am I crazy?

Will get rid of Bannan next gameweek for Cleverley I think, hoping Tom will start this weekend and confirm that idea for me 🙂 Hoolahan will go soon after when I have the transfer free.

Iceman, would love Aguero, but would have to downgrade somewhere...not sure where...

Pilks is definitely our best midfield option. What suits him is our formation. Because we play with the lone striker, he has to cut in a bit to provide another attacking outlet for Hoolahan and Morrison, hence why he gets in a lot of goal scoring positions. However, since Holt came on and killed it against Liverpool, PL might change his lineup to get Holt in, which might restrict his goal potential. But it will mean he's got a better chance of getting assists.
