After waiting all season to jump in the Rolls Royston, I had the Dutchman all written up as a Differential and the mouse hovering over the ‘confirm transfers’ button only for the inevitable red card to ruin my Everton-related Differential dreams.

Growing up as an Everton fan does prepare you somewhat for footballing disappointments, so despite having to throw that one back in the pond for another week, I managed to pick myself up in time to fish out another three for you to chew over. As we continue our countdown to Gameweek Ten then, it’s time to look over the Scout Selection Committee’s Differential picks for this week…..

James Milner

With such a rich source of midfield talent available, rest and rotation is a big problem to anyone considering investing in Man City, particularly with their Champions League involvement to factor in. Against all the odds, though, it is James Milner who looks the most rotation proof right now. Nothing is guaranteed where Roberto Mancini is involved of course, but Milner is the only attacking midfielder to have started all of the last three league matches, and as Samir Nasri and Adam Johnson both started in the Carling Cup tie on Wednesday, it’s pretty clear where he sits in the pecking order at present.

A look through the FPL statistics for the season throws up a lot of unexpected results; if you work it out on a ‘per minute played’ basis then Milner has a better EA PPI and overall points return than David Silva, and has also picked up more bonus points. Priced at just 7.5 to Silva’s 10.2 and owned by just 2.4%, Milner could prove to be a huge differential over the next few weeks then, and considering City’s goal scoring form, he looks like an excellent source of fantasy points.

Somen Tchoyi

After a poor start to the season, Roy Hodgson’s West Brom side have looked much improved in recent games and after two solid wins on the trot, they will be full of confidence going into their home tie against Liverpool.

Before last week Hodgson looked settled on a Peter Odemwingie and Shane Long front line, but with a knee injury set to keep Long out for 6 weeks, he will almost certainly draft in a ready-made replacement rather than try to change their formation. Somen Tchoyi is the obvious choice to replace him up front having already played there in pre-season, and priced at just 5.1 in the FPL game and classed as a midfielder, Tchoyi looks great value.

In many ways, Tchoyi is the definition of a differential. He’s cheap, has low ownership and as a midfielder playing out of position, he should provide excellent value for money over the short to medium term. Four home ties in next six, including games against the struggling Bolton and Wigan should more than make up for a tricky trip to Arsenal next week, so if you’re looking for a cheap fifth midfielder then Tchoyi looks as good an option as any right now.

Hugo Rodallega

If you take a look at the current league standings then you’d be forgiven for dismissing Wigan as a source of Fantasy points; they sit joint bottom of the league after six defeats on the trot, and have managed just six goals all season. Thankfully there’s more to it than that; the Latics have looked much improved in recent weeks, and will consider themselves very unlucky not to have picked up a result against Bolton or Newcastle.

Home ties against Fulham and Blackburn as well as a trip to Wolves in their next three should give then plenty of chances to pick up goals, and with the return to fitness of Hugo Rodallega they’ve finally got someone who can put the ball in the net.

With 11 attempts on target against Newcastle (that’s more than Man United, Chelsea, Tottenham or Arsenal last week) it seems incredible that they didn’t get more from that game. Although Rodallega didn’t get on the score sheet last week, he looked sharp in front of goal and gave Wigan an edge that they’ve been missing in recent games. Priced at just 6.0 and with an ownership of 1.9%, he could prove to a decent differential over the next few games.

I made two tipsy transfers. In my defence one I've been planning all week (Agbonlahor > Balotelli) and the other was a horrible vision of Suarez failing me again - this time not even starting - so went Adebayor. Here's my squad. Serious problems picking goalies, defenders and between N Dyer/M Petrov. Help me out.

    Vorm (Schwarzer)
Kompany Enrique Bosingwa (R Taylor N Taylor)
    VDV (VC) Silva Nani Dyer
    Balotelli (C) Sturridge Adebayor

If so, that was idiotic, if not..selling him because of a drop was idiotic.

If it's not affecting the selling price, it does seem a bit shortsighted. But you can't really blame him for being slightly scarred from the Suarez experience.

No, I bought him at 9.5 and didn't sell him because of a drop but an injury doubt and problems converting chances. Either of which probably caused the drop, but there is a difference, you spanner 😛

Agreed on the Dyer decision, find it really hard to drop Enrique for Naylor both for doubling up reason and belief that Enrique offers attacking points and an equal or greater chance of CS. VDV or Balotelli (C)? Yes you still have me worried about that. Which will get less minutes?

TOTALFPL has betting odds of SWA CS at 34% and LIV CS at 37% so it's marginal. If Enrique gets an assist that'll do me even if he loses CS, while I can't see Naylor getting anything up front. It is hard to think of WBA scorers - main man Odemwingie not on fire, Brunt with a pen might be best bet.

Well the odds probably wouldn't have tipped them putting 2 past Villa away like last week either.

Enrique and Naylor could both keep a CS or they both could do bog all. More inclined to go with the defender who hasn't conceded at home yet is all.

That's the one area I'm not completely happy about, the lack of Utd coverage. I suppose I can always swap a premium forward/mid to get Nani/Roondog in if they start going on a rampage.

Pretty solid defence there - better than I was expecting given what you've spent on your attack!

I was listening to the scoutcast, and found myself agreeing when Mark and Granville mentioned how a players value only is relevant if you sell him. Very sensible.

But I just remembered another factor. If you, say, bought Silva at 9.5 and have him until 10.5. Then you will have a earned a 1.0 advantage on anyone who arrives late to the party.

Likewise. If you have Moses, and he has decreased to 4.7, you will have a 0.3 should he suddenly start delivering holy points from the promised land.

Just some fantasy football philosophic ramblings...

Really captain Ade, really? Fair play if you're taking the gamble yourself, but when we say home form is impressive I believe we really mean just two games, one when he got an assist against Arsenal and one when he scored two against 9-man Liverpool - a result I remember certain people saying was not to be taken seriously 😛 He last scored almost a month and a half ago and looked distinctly unenthusiastic in his last match. I have him but can't captain him.

Yes but VdV has scored 1 goal at home..which was a handball against Arsenal.
Adebayor is up against a pretty poor QPR team, and there are no other clear options besides Silva.

Just go with your gut feel.

I fancy both Stoke and Swansea to keep a clean sheet this week, and VDV to pump at least 2 past a shabby QPR defence.

People may argue, but I'm sticking with what I feel.

Oh, and by the way. Nearly everyone here was NOT getting in VDV or RVP because of their dodgy hamstrings.

So sometimes it's worth ignoring the crowd and taking a few risks. I wish I'd got in VDV a couple of weeks ago for Nani.

        Lesson learned.

Any comments on this wildcard team?:

    Ruddy (Begovic)

    NTaylor Turner Wilkinson Kompany (McAuley)

Silva Van der Vaart Walters Pilkington (Ramsey)

    Aguero Bendtner Van Persie

Plan is to go Aguero > Rooney after this GW (it's bang on the money to do that).

Defence and keepers are areas I could maybe tweak?

Lined up correctly for this GW?

    Any help welcome.

      - Why Ruddy? I don't think Norwich is capable to keep much CS.
      - Do you have 0.2 to upgrade Turner to Brown for their first-choice DF? Anyway, if you think he's more attacking threat and can keep his starting place. It's probably a good pick.
Btw, you need 1 more player on the bench.

Keeping Bosingwa could be a good move, but history tells us that his defensive qualities aren't that good.

Looking at his fixtures then they are getting worse.

                  So I'd say get rid.

Jones isn't nailed on and has a history of conceding goals due to the fault of people around him, so even when he plays then his fellow defenders tells me to get rid.

Should have said that in the first place, but getting rid of them both makes sense to me.

You reckon maybe Jones also concedes goals because he gets forward so much opening holes in his defence? I think there is no free lunch - sides with attacking defences have leaked goals at the back - Chelsea, United, Liverpool to some extent, Arselol. Newcastle and City haven't, on the other hand, subscribed completely to the attacking fullback strategy.

?! That is a no brainer for me. Chelsea are at home to an average arsenal side that have already lost 3 and drawn the other away from home. It is quite rare that everton do not give united a tough game at goodison. I cannot think of 1 reason to pick Jones here.

Fair point, average was harsh. I meant average in comparison to usual arsenal sides that I always fancied to score. You have scraped by in most of those wins against lesser sides. Correct me if I misremember but hasn't VDV risen 0.3 this GW? Counting Sat night to Fri night. Pretty sure several players have managed 0.3 rises in a GW this season. Still it is a mystery how VDV didn't rise tonight, he was well over. I have seen anomalous behaviour like this on Fri nights especially though.

I just thought of this--the whole Everton 1st X! played 120 mins on Wednesday..with a noon time kick off at Goodison--surely we can expect Manchester Utd to ravish them..Roonpig(c) for differential over VDVaart????

    Thoughts plz..

Rooney is owned by 44% of players, VDV - 12%
Would not be a differential 😆

I mean the captain differential..probably 5% of those 44 are making him captain..and 10% of the 12 are gonna make DVD captn..

I highly doubt it, at least 20% will capain Rooney, and maximum 8% will captain VDV.
just because people on here are captaining VDV and not Rooney, hardly means that the rest arent..

chances he may not feature... goodison is rooney's acid test... the crowd are always behind his back.. so every possibility that rooney might not get a start... with that being said, i think after the mauling by city SAF has to start rooney.. if he wants to win the game i.e... but too risky for the armband...i'd play safe with VDV

Doubtful. You'd need a Kompany clean sheet and nothing at all from Bos to make it worthwhile this week.

Continuing the philosophical vibe... now the subject of taking 4 point hits

I did Bosingwa ➡ Shawcross for 4 pts before he rose

There are many forum knee-jerkers who only think one week ahead when the subject of hits comes up.

E.g. "This means that Shawcross has to outscore Bosingwa with 4 points this GW. Since both play at home, this is unlikely."

Well, as most of you know, there is more to it. For me Shawcross has until the end of the season, until I play a wild card, or until I transfer him out, to make up the deficit and justify those 4 points. So, the more seasoned FPL player might have the following reaction:

"Bosingwa and Shawcross might get similar amount of points until then. Who knows? Since its a risky hit, could you just not have waited until over the weekend?"

First of all, in this case I did it to get Shawcross before he rose in price. But as many will agree - this game is about points, not budget, so that is not a reason good enough on its own.

But then we move to the seldom mentioned benefit of taking a hit. Taking a hit and getting Shawcross, I do not only get the player I want, and dodge the price rise, but I practically get one extra free transfer for the rest of the season, or until I play my wild card*.

Thinking about it, this makes a lot of sense, and is really worth it. Next week, I will already have Shawcross, and can focus my free transfer on other stuff. Like on shuffling some of the big hitters according to form and injuries.

Thinking through all this, I have a feeling that, if used right and with good timing, the hit can become a very powerful tool. But then again, there are blokes who have just done 5 transfers all season, and are in the overall top 10.

(* the closer we get to the mid-season wild card, the more difficult it will be to have a hit pay itself off)

Similar thinking to you on point hits. Ive taken a few this season already, with the thinking that since ill have them long term, I can justify the hit

Also been pondering the mechanics of transfers - which when you think about it are the single most fundamental activity in FPL so we better understand the theory. Interesting point about a hit being a free transfer later.

Basically a hit converts points into a transfer. But if you otherwise would delay the transfer, yes this saves you one transfer for later. Potentially, this could wipe out a hit and thus the transfer has been converted back into points - and you've lost nothing, but maybe gained value and player points!

You need to make enough transfers to be in danger of hits for this free transfer to pay you back, though. If you don't, and never use up all your transfers in a week, or worse let your free transfers reach two and stay there, you will never have avoided a later hit and will never be paid back.

This is getting dangerously close to advocating nonsensical behaviour so I'll stop there for now 😀

I think this is an important element. And worth keeping in mind.

However, should you win back those 4 points anyway, this "clause" will not "come into play" to use a term.

I like the way you're thinking. My second year managing and this year am really getting into playing the general manager as well as the manager of the weekly team. Have built a really solidly valued squad and have some $ in the bank get in a bigger hitter when I want. Have focused on getting players I want before they rise and as close to the best time to get them in as I can. It's fun playing the value game(as in your example of getting in a player before he rises). A hit then can then be ascribed a value relative to your judgement of the upcoming weeks. I agree it can be a powerful too.

Yeah, it can be fun. And you are touching on a subject that I touched on briefly a couple of pages back.

That is: How important can value become. Because it is certainly possible, that for example doing many hits early on, will set you up with a really good squad later on in the season. But of course, then you might also have put yourself out of range.

Also worth to notice that all these considerations will change if you are not playing the overall rank, but rather focusing on a mini-league, h2h's or other "minor" games within the FPL.

That's a good post. I felt this when I didn't do Nani -> VDV for a hit last week. Not only would it have paid off (though this isn't the point here) but long term it seems to make sense (hopefully!), and I just had to do it this week anyway.

      But, yeah, good post.
